The REAL Problem with Overlanding: How Luxury is Ruining the Outdoors
Getting outside has really become a trending topic in the last few years, but are we keeping the traditional spirit of the outdoors alive, or are promoting a lifestyle filled with over the top gear and out of this world photos for Instagram? Let's talk about this and how I fell into the same trap.

You got my sub! I am about to go nomad because I yearn for the woods and sounds of nature!
Your not wrong you dont need a rooftop tent, and it has its drawbacks just like anything else. But for me I slept on the ground enough as a young man, so that in itself was enough for me. But do I think its worth all that money to go twice a year? No, no I don't. But I do think they should do whatever it takes to get out and live, and if that means buy thing that isn't really necessary but makes them happy, and will get them out, then so be it. That the goal, right? to get out and unwind and live as free as you can, even if its only a few weekend a year. I like the transitions you did with the tire man, good content, you got another sub Semper Fi
I agree with you, it is important to get out there, but you don't need a lot to get out there. If it makes sense, I think car camping is a great alternative to Rooftop tents, and it doesn't nearly cost as much. I just think people could be saving their money while still getting out there. At the end of the day though, it is truly up to them.
Hi, I hope you are well. I always follow you. To make your brand known on the RUclips platform, I think the RUclips video SEO & video promotion service is very necessary for you. If you accept this service, it can bring a good result for your business. thank you
If i get the ADF 2 inch lift, will the camber bolts work, or will i need new top hats and adjustable control arms?
I haven't done just 2" for a lift but it might be possible. The lift kit itself is cambers so there isn't a need for new top hats.
@TheCreateOutdoors sweet thank you! I just got a 2007 outback, and I've been enjoying watching your Forester videos!
Hello... Thank you for your video it's been long time... I am adding just 1" and 1 3/8 to my 2008 Forrest.. other than the rubber lift do you remember what else u needed to add or change??.. I do appreciate
You will most likely need rear camber bolts and new end links if you plan to use your sway bars. If you are doing a sway bar delete, then just get camber bolts.
WRONG!!! Dude you need to fix this video or take it down. The second number is a percentage of tread width, NOT millimeters of side wall. WTH!
And if you actually read the comments you would know I corrected that error.
Overlanding is becoming nothing but "influencers" with money wanting to brag about their status. Real overlanding can be so much simpler. while everyone meets a different gear requirement, most people take it too far.
It's hard not to agree with this!
By myself, I'll take my dog, canoe, fishing gear, small tent, a backpack. And I'll have a great time. With my wife and kids... all the gear comes out. Overland fit my 4runner, huge tent with air mattresses, heater, battery bank, coffee pot, tables, chairs, cooler, tablets, drones, and more. The gear and comfort items help to keep them happy and help them enjoy the trip that they otherwise would not. If they're happy, I can be happy. I agree that it is too much. However, it's what it takes to enjoy the outdoors with my family.
Looks good, good video!
Love the content. I am an eagle scout double silver stars. Between rent prices and living in nature I have moved into a 2019 travatao GL (lithium and solar). I work as a cybersecurity IT analyst remotely and full time live out of it. I think for everyone based on their needs, their goals and their comfort level having more tools to make appreciating nature easier and falling closer to their comfort level helps to bring them closer to the wildlife we love so much.
This wasn't very informative and made you sound like a gatekeeper. The core rules of outdoors are to go outdoors, have fun, and don't make a mess. That's it. If you want to spend a bunch of money on unnecessary crap, go for it. You're obviously enjoying your simplistic outdoor lifestyle, let everyone else enjoy it their own way too.
Not really sure what sounded like I was gatekeeping in the video. Not once did I say you shouldn’t go outside. What I see time in time again is people buying gear they don’t need just to go outside for a couple weekends a year. You and I are on the same wavelength. Just get outside and enjoy it.
That's not gatekeeping. Gatekeeping is probably the most misused word outdoors. Blocking a trailhead by parking in front of it? That's gatekeeping. What isn't gatekeeping? It isn't him telling people in a video (that no one is forcing you to watch) that he thinks it's bad "overlanding" has become a marketing / PR term to sell people more expensive stuff.
Years ago I saw someone make a complete thru hiking setup that was a reasonable weight for $100. While you are on the computer making spreadsheets trying figure out what gear is optimum someone else is just out in nature enjoying themselves.
Personally, I got a 2011 toyota tacoma expressly for camping, I splurged on a bed cap and got a tent that attaches to the bed (4 person tent, i think) the fiance had a old futon that is now permanently in the bed of my tuck, we also use it a lot for the drive in movies, it's still a good daily driver.
I totally get the roof top tent thing, even though I have one aha! Looking forward to seeing what you do with your Forester
"Opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one"
There's a difference between a man alone with a hatchet vs a clown with a mansion sized inflatable tent. I'm tired of them hitching on the popularity of survival videos with their thousand dollar equipments and fake bullshit.
no skottle? are you really overlanding? lol I camp off a 250cc motorcycle, so simplicity is #1
I think you should still make the camper trailer lol
You go right ahead and make it, I'll ship it to your house.
People like me that hate camping get to see places we would not normally get to because we can take some comforts with us, it's not all in vain.
Like I said later in the video: If the gear benefits your lifestyle that's one thing. For those who don't travel a lot and might go camping a few weekends a year locally, I don't think it's all that necessary.
I liked that tire spank edit at 1:17. That was clean lmao
I have been camping for 30 years and have watched how the "need" for more and more stuff is killing peoples desire to camp. Sites are filled with 6 figure RVs and Travel Trailers.
It’s certainly exhausting for one thing.
"Overlanding" is bullshit. It's car camping with shit strapped to your car so you can show off when you drive up a fire road or pull into a campground. Typical modern consumerisim fueled by social media and RUclips shills.
if you want to take the wife who dont want to go and do the out door stuff you have to get some stuff of comfort so she will let you go and go with you, but i agree on what your saying.
Of course. Best thing to do in that case is introduce her to the more simplistic style of camping overtime, rather than putting on too much at one time.
Sounds like you married the WRONG woman.
I agree with this. Much like how the Jeep is a lifestyle brand more than an actual car company. They make people think they need a capable off roader to go explore nature.
Jeep isn't a lifestyle nor is Toyota or any of the rest of them, they are TOOLS. I chose a jeep because it was most suitable for my needs on the type of exploration I like to do. They have a time and place. You are right a lot of the time you don't need a jeep or yota on 37's to see amazing places. But sometimes you do.. Sometimes those features, like lockers, lifts, and big tires help you get to that remote place that few have gotten to see. Now not everyone looks at it that way, you do have those that want all that just so they can say they have it.
@@TheCrayonBrotherhood this is how I feel about my 09 Prius. I don't care about the stigma, I get 46 mpg with unmatched reliability. I've drove to 40 plus states now in this car!
Good stuff, keep those videos coming! Also, don't forget to subscribe.
I will! Thanks for the support!
Great content!
I have a 2003 Baja, and I want to lift it using the 2004 Baja’s struts (they’re an inch taller). Should I have to worry about camber, sway bars, etc. since it’s only a 1 inch lift? I need new struts anyway, my current ones are almost blown out and creak whenever the car moves. 💀
Camber yes, but in reality you will probably just need cmaber bolts in the rear. I don't have too much experience with Bajas though
@@TheCreateOutdoors thanks for the insight. We’ll see how it goes when I get around to doing it lmao
I just subbed too you got some cool content too man ^^^^
It's a bad idea to lift anything with cv joints.
Most CV axles can handle up to 2" of lift without any issues. Will they wear out a little sooner than at stock height? Maybe. When you start pushing 3" or higher then you need extensive modifications to make sure your axles articulate properly.
did you take an impact to the camber bolts? doesnt that scew up the subframe?
It shouldn’t have an effect as far as I know. I still had to torque them afterwards, so the impact didn’t apply enough torque to the bolts to do that.
Hello, I have the same subaru. I also raised it and how can I adjust the camber at the rear?
How high did you lift it.
@TheCreateOutdoors 2"
2 zoll
At 2 inches, rear adjustable control arms and camber bolts will most likely be required in the rear like what I had done.
Would you recommend upgrading tires before a lift? If so, what would you recommend for off roading that will fit the stock Subaru? Will I need to then change to a different tire if I add the lift later? Thanks in advance.
You pretty much nailed it. If you plan on getting bigger tires anyway, I recommend the lift first. If you just want to get tires in the same or similar size to stock, then get tires first.
17mm socket wouldn’t work?
No, I tried. The largest socket that fits between the rails of super strut is 14mm
I got two foresters myself. One off road other 550hp "race car".
Good video man!
you look/sound like a subaru guy
Perfect I'll fit right in
thx bro.
What is your total ground clearance
With tires it's about 11"
Great video! I don't think of the Forester Wilderness as a "mom" car at all. I actually really like the styling and almost bought one ... until I decided on an Outback Wilderness! :) I'm not trolling at all. I ended up deciding I wanted that 2.4 turbo. If they offered that turbo in the Forester I would buy that thing hands-down. Anyway, thanks for sharing! Hope to see more.
Awesome music and photography.
Working on lifting my 06 impreza osw. My 1st subaru. What size wheel and tire are you running?
215/70R/16s. Any tire larger than stock will rub no matter the lift.
@TheCreateOutdoors unfortunately the impreza size of 205/55/16 has pretty much nothing for an all terrain replacement. Thinking of going to a 15" with a 38 offset so I can do a 205/65 or 205/70 in 15 that way it will be close to the same diameter, just more rubber :-)
@@umustbbornagainActs2-38 Yeah my comment wasn't so much that you can't do it just that if you plan on a bigger size expect to do some clearancing in t your wheel wells. that's all.
Hey, do you have any preference when it comes to tires, i see that youre running grabbers, which are also on my radar but ive been looking at wildpeak trails, i dont want something as agressive as k02s but im open to anything?
Nope, no preference. I'll probably be switching to Toyo Open Country for my next set.
What size is that long knuckle bolt? I just got my 1st subaru and am wanting to replace it with a stainless version when I start tearing out all the old and installing all the new :-)
Like the length and thread size? That I have no idea on. I would suggest waiting on getting the new bolts after you take the old ones out if you can and bring them to the hardware store with you.
@ yea I could do that too. Thanks :-)
Do you have spacers? Or are those +35 offset?
Like I mentioned in the video, they are +35mm
@ Thank you! I love the figment on your Forester and want to achieve that on my 98 Fozy
The Outback is a station wagon. Forester looks to me like a crossover.
From vidq❤
Excellent video and excellent advice. Have you noticed a gas mileage change after lifting under normal/street driving conditions?
Oh yes very. It gets about 20 mpg now with all of it's mods
@TheCreateOutdoors city? freeway? or combined?
@@RideShootDrink I'll say combined because it's too old to measure all of those.
Nice video, might have missed it but what engine/tyres are on the orange Crosstrek ? I'm on my 4th Subaru (2022 Outback) and really love it, and like all the cladding, as it gives far more confidence off-road, plus much easier to keep clean.
I believe it’s a 2.0 Manual
Getting my 1st subaru an 06 impreza outback sport. Installing the Anderson 2" lift. Will a 215/75/16 fit this setup? What other quality providers provide other suspension pieces I can look into for my impreza? Any other recommendation?
That's the tire size I run on mine, however being a Forester I already have more ground clearance from factory than your OBS. I have rubbing at full lock and the tire did make contact with the pinch weld for the wheel well, but that was easy enough to heat up and hammer down. You may need some of the other parts I listed in this video to get your alignment back to normal but depending on the shop you get your alignment at they may be able to get it in a good spot. I am running almost 3" of lift, so you may not encounter as much positive camber as I did.
@TheCreateOutdoors thank you! I am getting adjustable control arms for the rear. Wont i need entended sway bar links? Besides Amazon what are some good suppliers for mods?
@@umustbbornagainActs2-38 Like I said in the video, I use the Rallitek adjustable links in the front, then just regular endlinks in the rear. Or you can just run no swaybars at all, your choice.
Picking up my new to me 06 impreza outback sport. Wanting to upgrade wheel and tire package with an Anderson 2" lift. Can I get away with 215/75/16 with the 2" Anderson lift should I keep the factory offset and backspacing?
