A quick blast out for an overnighter. I missed the mega aurora as I was at work so headed out with hopes of seeing something or some stars. Only managed a lovely sunset before the clouds came in though.

CIC hut trip day two We set off early doors and made great time up the ridge. More people throwing rocks off the Ben Nevis summit today!! We walked over the summit and down towards the CMD and descended Coire Leis. A bit of a knee rattler, soon we were safely through the cloud and back to the hut

The Cioch - Scramble link up adventure day
Просмотров 1267 месяцев назад
An exciting day linking up scrambles to the Cioch and Sgurr Sgumain. My head and body weren’t really feeling it but I persevered and had a wonderful mountain adventure. It was nice to relive old memories of Sgurr Sgumain cave in winter with Adrian. When I had breakfast in the campsite cafe the next morning I was surprised to see my picture on the postcards peering out of the cave! Lochan traver...

Up the side of an stac scree slope to the bealach. An airy and thrilling scramble up An Stac as a warm up for the In Pinn. What a cracker of a day!! I did however get lost descending Coire Banachdaich. Not such easy route finding from above! Lower my rucksack before I down climbed a little chimney I watched helplessly as it teetered then rolled further down! Stripping the bite valve from my bla...

Paddling out to Loch Maree on the canoe I built with my Dad and the paddles I’ve made. What an adventure! I felt like id realised the dreams of my youth. This is something I’d been looking forward to for a long time. I finished work early and headed off as the forecast looked great. I made it back just in time to tuck the chickens in

Summit Gully - Stob Coire nam Beith

The last of the winter forays up an incomplete Summit Gully. Managed to bypass the cave pitch higher up and skirt around the lower breaks on rock and grassy scrambles. Thanks to Tim for securing me up one particularly chossy, muddy, loose, grot slot. A trip around the coire to Bidean nam Bian, a first for me, before making our way down to beat the weather.

It’s been on my wish list for a long time and the forecast looked good for an inversion so I went for it. First day out this winter season so legs a little more tired than we would have liked. It was one of those days where crampons weren’t really needed for getting about. I put them on for most of the technical bits, as I’m out of practice they removed any fear of slips!

    • @UmbertoJessop
      @UmbertoJessop 3 месяца назад

      Just pull one end and it comes through. I think there’s normally a sling with a maillon at the top. So you put the rope through there to the middle and chuck both the ends down. It’s not tied to anything 👍😁

    Looks like a grand day out. I soloed this many years ago now, scariest day out in the Cuillin I ever had. Didn't like the look of the guide book's recommendation to go right on one of the tops (was green and weeping) so went up a sketchy open corner on the left... at one point I found myself hanging by my fingertips over a huuge drop, unable to get back to the chockstone I'd just stepped up from... thank God for adrenaline!

    hi, what do you mean by deathroping?

    • @UmbertoJessop
      @UmbertoJessop 8 месяцев назад

      It’s when a climbing team trails a rope between them without placing any protection. If one falls it’s likely the other will get pulled off and cheesewire anyone caught below them. It’s an amalgamation of short roping and moving together but without the benefits of either

    • @jonny1903
      @jonny1903 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Is the idea though to rope up and if someone falls , the others arrest? @@UmbertoJessop

    • @UmbertoJessop
      @UmbertoJessop 8 месяцев назад

      I think people feel safer because there is a rope. Unless there’s terrain or gear between you and your partner then the rope isn’t doing much. Short roping would be the technique where an experienced person has the less experienced person on a short leash to quickly stop a slip becoming a fall. If both are inexperienced then it’s probably safer to pitch the route and place gear. If both are comfortable and can self arrest then they may as well solo it. If someone did slip and start to fall it’s unlikely if you were at the top and you got yanked back unexpectedly that you’d be able to arrest, and if the person above slipped and fell past you before arresting then they’ll probably have too much momentum for you to be able to brace. In both instances you’re just putting your partner at risk by being tied together. That’s my two cents anyway!

    Hey! I’m looking to do this hike independeltly. I dont have a ton of experience. How hard is it and which app did you use to navigate the trail?

    • @UmbertoJessop
      @UmbertoJessop Год назад

      I used Mapy.cz to navigate. The gpx can be found online by searching “heights of Alay”. I can’t say how hard it would be for you. What else have you done that’s similar? To be self supported and solo it is quite a large undertaking as there are few places to resupply. I would say this is quite a hard trek, one of the hardest I’ve undertaken. The altitude makes it very challenging as you go up to 4,100m and there isn’t always an obvious trail to follow.

    Looks fantastic! Its been on my list for some time. Do you think I could take my Labrador dogs with me to traverse the main ridge. It says that the technical climbing/scrambling sections are avoidable but still not sure.. Thanks for sharing.

    • @UmbertoJessop
      @UmbertoJessop Год назад

      If you’re going from Kinloch towards Dibdil I think the hardest bit is the north ridge to Askival. The easier route skirts left of the ridge. It is grade one scrambling over steep grass and rocky steps, there is a faint path but it comes and goes and looks like several routes are possible. If your dog has done other scrambles before and is sure footed you should manage. Everything else can just be a walk. Just realised I’ve watched your Bidean nam Bian video before! Great story telling and a fun watch 👍😁

    Good stuff!.It's on my "wish list". Looks quite gnarly. What type of boots are you wearing...the route obviously needs something ok for walking but also climbing up to Diff/V Diff.

    • @UmbertoJessop
      @UmbertoJessop Год назад

      The only climbing is a friendly dif chimney at the end and a small section of mod down climbing off the imposter. You can pick your difficulty on the main traverse but it’s all scrambling and there are several exits other than the diff chimney, the mod ramp left after the 5m wall or dogleg gully at grade 1 or 2 down right from the putting green. I think I wore La sportiva tx4 approach shoes that day but I also like the TX5s for scrambling. Alistair was wearing the TX guide. It’s one of my favourite days out you should definitely bump it up the list!
