Just a Welsh Gardener with a big smile! My growing area is mainly based on the no dig method. It consists of raised beds, a chicken coop, solar energy to light it ALL up. Water pumps to water the plot & a nature pond.

I buy the cheap plastic butterflies from the $2 shops to dissuade brassica butterflies. The reason is, they are territorial and won't lay eggs if there is a bigger butterfly amoungst that brassicas. Thanks for the information.
Wow! I've never heard that! Thats an interesting concept! Thank you!
I want to see you get to 100,000 I’ve told all my plot neighbours about you ❤️
Just stumbled across your channel. Blinking brilliant! Sub'd will follow your videos all the advice anyone could need on home growing.😊
Good tips there Danny. Labelling is my downfall, I will be better this year and I need to plan better. 👍
It's a bad habit for many, don't worry mark..change that for this year 😊
I’m a Dutch and love watching your videos! I lived in Wales for a few years and miss it dearly.
Aww why thanks! I'm really lucky to love here. I mean that ♡ beautiful country. The Netherlands is lovely too!
@@TheGrowUpChannelI’ll just use your videos as a “visit” to your beautiful 🏴 Wales❤
@toadette2045 well I shall keep that in mind when I film the scenery! There is a video from last year where I put the drone up and film the surrounding scenery.
OMG the "we listen and we don't judge" killed me, hahaha. Fab video as always! - Maria
😂😂😂 I'm never normal! 😂
Great video as always Danny ♥️
Why thanks Angie! 😊🫶🌱
Wonderful video again! I love adding to my garden inventory too with Xmas and bday pressies! The collection soon builds and can be used year on year! Have a brilliant week! 😊🪴💚
Thanks Sarah! Absolutely! It's soin adds up doesn't it ! Haha
@ yes! I am starting my sowings this week and so excited to get growing! 🎉😊🌱
Great video Danny i haven't done that much really we have had a few family emergency things to do, i did manage my Onions and Garlic and they are growing nicely so far. My spuds i got from Grow Local last year are now on their way so that'll be something else to do inbetween sitting down for five minutes every fourteen minutes due to spinal problems, i'm hoping to start some Peppers soon ready for when it warms up a bit and the greenhouse is ready along with the Chilli Grow from Grown Local, we will see how things are with myself first and this family thing TC. Barry (the Wirral)
Hello stranger! Cheers Barry! Sorry to hear you've had some troubles. Goodluck with your growalong. Danny 🌱
Danny are your 90cm wide metal poles from first tunnels ?
Hey susie..do you mean the hoops over the raised beds ?
@TheGrowUpChannel Yes Danny .I can't find any that are high enough but fit a 90 cm bed .
They are 91cm wide susie. Go onto my latest video and I've linked them in the description. I talk about them in my latest video, funnily enough haha
@@TheGrowUpChannel Thanks Danny ,your a star ☺️
Watched your video. Not so alarmed after all! Good tips, thanks!
Oh good haha! No pressure is needed. Just enjoy the process 😊
Hey a fellow 8b gardener here! I had no doubt that you were a Jeffersonian at heart (Southern Oregonian) and in the garden. Got a few local treats heading yours and Linda's way this week. Bronchitis derailed me for a minute.
Haha i'll take that ! Thank you very much! I'm sure me ans linda will love the treats. Danny 😊🫶🌱
I loved following you for all your gardening advice. Now I love following you for this and the fact that you made me feel 'seasoned' instead of old! 🤣 Thanks for a first rate video, as always. Have a great week ahead xx
Haha thanks Jean! You're a wonderful supporter of my channel. Much love 🫶
Excellent video. I like the way you explain so clearly without over complicating.👍
Why thanks! I like to keep it simple as it's not as difficult as some make out haha
Forgot to comment last week to say that oca looked brilliant! No damage?
No damage at all. You've still got time to comment kerry. 🙄😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@TheGrowUpChannel I just did, didn't I 🤣🤣 That's great - quite a few of mine had small insect holes, which was a bit annoying.
My Welsh onions are a God send sometimes
Aren't they just! I grow them at home as a staple
Hi Danny great video full of information and tips 👍🌱🥔
Thanks robert! Glad you enjoyed it. Danny 🌱
Great advice Danny thanks. I’m netting nearly everything this year!! 😂Where do you get your netting from?
Haha i don't blame you! All links are in the description Jenny 😊🫶🌱
Great video and such an important one as well for anyone coming in to gardening! It's more simple than I think it's made out to be!
Absolutely Roisin!! Sometimes it's made more complicated than it needs to be haha
Hi Danny, the toilet roll tube is very good for beginners also. Even cut in half and placed in a used supermarket meat tray. Great video as always.
Absolutely! I mentioned those last week I think. Very handy to grow into :)
Loads of great info there Danny. 😊👍
Thanks Mags! Here's altogether a great growing season 🌱
Thanks for all the advice Danny xx
You are so welcome Penny 😊🫶🌱
Wish I was closer as I have soooooo many pots saved from gallon size on down. I've been trying to be more strategic and save the same type so they stack together better. I'm also lucky that I can get free wood chips right in my village. Just have to fill a few buckets at a time.....easier on the back🤣
I wish you was closer too! I'd never need a seed! Haha
I know you can get that paint pen most places, but as long as it's an oil based one, any brand should work. Some good tips there.
Oh absolutely.. but here in the UK, you can't get them as easily as you'd think haha
No I used a garden market which is waterproof and uv resistant so much better than sharpies . They are amazing.
Ah, nice !! Sharpies are uv resistant, too.
When I first scrolled through my subscriptions, I suddenly stopped at your thumbnail and thought, "Wow! How did Danny grow his hair so long and so quickly?!?" Hoodliner, duh. 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’ve started reusing plastic veg containers from my supermarket shopping to sow seeds in, then using another as a lid if they’re see through.
Brilliant jayne! They make great seed trays. With a lid.. even better
My most useful tools are a fork, a hoe, secateurs then as you say a hammer, nails and cable ties. I don’t use my spade very often.
I try and use the spade as little as possible too jayne haha
I agree Danny, I’ve got nets on all of my beds. I’ve even found that the netting gives some protection from frost. I use the scaffolding net. Keeps out butterflies and pigeons. You can even sew 2 widths together to make taller wider beds for brassicas or fruit bushes.
That's fab! I gave a roll to a friend a few weeks ago. She said its fab!!
Today was finishing the window in the She Shed and next will be tidying 🤦♀️ and organizing the poly. I’m hopeful the vegepods will keep things safe from beasties. Looks bloody cold there it’s minus 5c to 5c sunny here but snow is forecast 😮. Great tips as always Benny stay warm and have a great week, Ali 🥶🥶🌞🇨🇦
Haha a sealed shed! Like janes..... 😂 yes it's been cold here as of late. Have a great week Jackie xx
Great tips there Danny on spring preparation ❤ You really thought it through 👏👏👏 Great video as always 👍 ❤ x
Thank you Linda. Hopefully it helps a few :)
@TheGrowUpChannel I'm sure it will Danny 👍😀 x
Hi Danny great tips. I’ve been watching a lot of videos over the past few years And you’re the first gardener to explain about wood chip in raised beds .looking forward to a great growing year . Keep up the tips🥬🥬🥬🥬
Oh fantastic! Glad you picked up on the bark tip. Yes never do it! Haha
In Canada, apparently colored pallets can be returned for $$ so most places don't want us taking them but there is an abundant supply of heat treated pallets around for free. I use strips of waste cotton fabric (cotton shirt sideseams from my quilting hobby) instead of plastic ties in the garden. It can come from old cotton shirts, sheets, t-shirts etc. and can be in various colors! They won't last forever but will last a few years. I get my bark chips for free from a local tree trimmer if/when they are in the neighbourhood. Paper pots can be made out of any recyclable paper and be planted with the starter plant. Plant markers can be made from plastic pots or pot lids that would otherwise go to recycling. I mostly don't even have sides on my beds but have them constructed as Charles Dowding does. I do find most RUclips gardeners do spend a lot of money on gardening and it does give the impression that it is expensive to do. My spring is still a few months away. 🤣Great video! Sorry I'm longwinded today.
Yeah similar situation here with the blue pallets. Great you have a free source of bark too! I spend on my garden as I always feel guilty when I get a youtube paycheck. As little as it is.. I like to spend it back on the garden. Haha
@@TheGrowUpChannel Don't feel guilty!!! I subscribe and add a comment exactly to aid that goal.
@Sylvie_M thank you Sylvie xxx
Danny, I am looking forward to the season ahead with your enthusiasm and top tips. Also your new shed build and cooking on your stove
Oh me too Mark! I cannot wait to build it! Danny 🌱
Love that! You are sooooo right👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve just ordered a perennial cauliflower! Four year life span apparently 🤞🏻🤞🏻
@ritahobbs5256 no way! What's it called ? I'll look it up :)
@ victoriana nursery … sometimes called nine star they call it cut & come again cauliflower… looks a bit broccoli but tastes more cauliflower
@ritahobbs5256 oh yes we have this! It's in my seed box for this year too! Woo!
As you said Danny planning takes a lot of the stress away at the start of the season when you look at a full box of various seeds panic sets in no need just have yourself a sowing plan with backups and everything will work out
Absolutely haha it will all work out in the end.... he says haha
Brilliant video. I learnt so much
Glad it was helpful! Thanks Pauline! Danny 🌱
Woodchip is a fantastic material for the plot seen another u tuber myfamilygarden i think grow potatoes in woodchip seed on top of soil then pile on the chip with great results
Oh wow that's interesting.
Such a good video Danny . great info and advice. I’m gonna give that compost and pen a go. Can’t wait to get started . Thanks for cheering me up on this grey gloomy Sunday afternoon. 💜 21:42
So nice of you! Thank you & yes good look with the compost and pen! Glad it cheered you up 😊
Absolutely love your videos Danny- they're so informative for someone like me whose fairly new to this. With protecting the brassicas (or other veg) from caterpillars, would it be OK to leave a couple of plants outside of the netting for the purpose of giving the caterpillars sonething to munch on and increase Butterfly numbers. Thanks so much x
Hey pippa! That's a lovely idea! However if you want to help butterflies. Plant a buddleia in a corner..it can grow as high at 20ft!! But boy do the butterflies love them! I've got one for the plot to be planted in spring. They overwinter and last forever. Cut down every year and they will come back over and over again . They are also beautiful.
Great advice 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks Lisa 😊
Just for reference mate the blue and red pallets are now safe, they use food dye now, it used to be bromide and this was banned in 2010. However there are some still in circulation and it would be stammed to say bromide on the pallet. if it doesn't have that its heat treated and dyed there is no bad chemicals in them anymore as a rule. Brill video and great to see you have started to select what the video is about. Your onto the next phase of your growth now pal. Well deserved . Outdone yourself. Get yourself over to me I have a room full of pots you can have
Cheers Tony! I think the blue ones are actually returned too so the companies don't want you taking them haha! But good to know. Cheers Tony. Means a lot ! 🙌
Great update once again Danny plenty of useful info to take in and use to improve things for me I'm quite pleased how many things I'm actually doing lol keep up the good work mate 👍
Good to hear Jim! We all have a list of jobs for sure haha
So addictive Danny! Good advice, as always 👍
Glad you think so! Yes 😂 very addictive 😂🤦♂️
You should check the stamps on pallets you use. Don't use ones with MB (Methyl Bromide) or SF (Sulphuryl Fluoride) on them, but instead look for ones stamped with HT (heat treated). Other codes that should be safe and might be combined with other codes are: DB (debarked), KD (kiln dried), DH (dielectric heated - microwaved I think?). Producing MB pallets is no longer allowed in EU/UK, but I almost picked up one last week that had come from India and had the MB treatment stamp as well as HT stamps. I also won't use unstamped or dirty pallets.
Thanks so much for this! I meant to show the diffefent type of stamps! This is very helpful!
There's so much I'm taking away from this video. I'm in Ireland and not a chance I can get bark mulch for free, it's going to cost me about €400 for mine 😭
If you're going to spend that much, it might be better to get a small chipper of your own. That's expensive for chips.
Oh wow!! We are so so lucky it's free for us. So many have to pay though
I can't locate decent trays here for starting seedlings, so I use those aluminum baking tins, the ones that are square or rectangle. Yes it means I need to add drainage, but they're available almost anywhere. Repotting I was using yoghurt containers, the smaller and larger. I considered it as recycling until they're too ratty looking then they go in the city recycling. It doesn't have to be expensive. Perennial plants, if you have neighbours who are willing to split plants like rhubarb, ask and they just might be happy to help.
Wow really! Where are you exactly? We've only recently had them so easily available here too!
It would be nice to have mild winters. We have -5/-25C and even lower windchill as this polar vortex settles over us till Wednesday 🥶. We had a freak warmup Thursday and up Thursday 11C and spread some ashes and bundled up plants with straw. Hoops-I need more large clamps to hold covers in place. We have beds made from various materials and I tripped over the ballast boards for the last time and so glad I don’t have spikes sticking up to hold hoops in place 🙄. Perusing seed catalogs and armchair traveling-it’s dangerous 😂.
Wow, that's a cold spell indeed! I've been sending too much time looking at seed catalogues too haha
Hi Danny xx looks crisp and cold XX have a good week xx🐛🐛🐛🧑🍳🧑🍳🥇🥇🥇🕵️🕵️🧑🌾🧑🌾🧑🌾🧑🌾
