Hillbilly Orchids
Добавлен 29 ноя 2012
I am an orchid grower in Fairmont West Virginia. I grow in a controlled environment with artificial grow lights. I use all organic media. I grow many different species and genius types of orchids. I grow some mounted and some potted. Been growing orchids almost a decade. I also have small African violet collection.

Tribute to my dear sweet friend Justin Hicks. Justin's orchids and more!
Thanks for this video. So many people don’t realize how long orchids take to bloom!
@tracystrombotne2855 Hey hon, yea i didn't at first either. So it's nice to have a comparison. I am going to do a comparison video with my Cattleya why nots. It was a viewer request. I'll probably air it Friday. It may interest you as well. Thanks for watching! Have a wonderful week 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
Looks like a great repot!! Happy New Year!!😊
@lucythecat529 Hey hon, thanks! ☺️ appreciate your support! Have a wonderful week 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
Well explained Paula. I have a request. Can you pull out and display a few of your mini/compact Catts to show size of blooming size plants? I would like to see the size of your Why Not types. Please put a can of coke/veggies next to them for comparison. Thanks
Hey Tess 👋 I can definitely do that! 😊 Thanks for the suggestion! My Red Why not is in bloom too so she is extra beautiful!😊 Have a wonderful week 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
That was explained very well Miss Paula. My goodness we are buried in about 10 inches of snow. It finally stopped. Now it’s going to be really cold with night temperatures 9 degrees. Take care sis, hugs 🫂💕🥰🎀
@shirleyholt898 Hey sweetie Miss Shirley 👋 Thanks for your support always my dear friend! Yes it's still snowing here at 7pm! We got about 7-8 inches 🤪 I'm so ready for spring! 🤣 Have a wonderful week dear friend! Be safe stay warm! 🤗🌹🩷💚
Paula, thanks for this informative video ❤ Love your channel ❤❤❤ Your advice on roots is true, because currently one of my summer blooming is spiking with crazy roots 😂 ❤❤
@SitiJackson Your welcome hon, thanks for your support! I appreciate that! Have a wonderful week 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
Wow I'm experiencing an exact version of this video.. where I have a really poor looking recovering Phal that was gifted to me to help. And the leaves are so tiny and it has really had a hard time of it. Yet it is spiking. And I'm like... Do I let it bloom because I want to know what the blooms look like and then cut it? Or do I just snip it. It's a hard thing to do even though I know I need to cut it.
Hey hon you can allow it to bloom so you can see it. It is hard decision. It may make the decision for you. Don't cut the whole spike just knock off the buds. After letting one open so you can see the blooms and take a picture. They can use the nutrients from the spike. Good luck with your phal. Keep me posted. Have a wonderful week 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
how are these plants doing now?
@@pealseypix Hey hon, all but 1 are doing good. I maybe can do an update on them. 😊 Have a wonderful week 🤗🌹🩷💚
our Lowe's never has any orchids! 😂
Ours usually don't! It was 10 years ago they had some and I got these so maybe 10 years from now I'll still have these cattleya 😆
I've had some very small plants bloom and let them and it didn't harm them. I think evaluating the health of the plant is more important when considering allowing it to bloom, rather than the size of the plant.
@michaelmccarthy4077 Hey Michael 👋 that is true. I would have thought a large pseudobulb cattleya like an appleblossom wouldn't have went down like it did. But I think that plant has other issues. But have a wonderful week ahead 🤗🌹🩷💚
I agree with this whole heartedly. I've had small plants bloom and beautifully but that's because they were healthy seedlings blooming for the first time. Completely different than a previously bloomed plant, or Phal that is in recovery, by obvious degree and trying to flower.. especially with little to no roots.
Are you already snowed in? You made me check my Laelia anceps which I bought FS in November. It came with 4 bulbs and in spike but dropped out of its pot immediately, only dead roots, so evidently stress flowerspike. I potted it in loose moss in a plastic bottle (according to YT videos) with little hope. My appartement has no AC for summer but underfloorheating for winter in parts of it (was already there when I moved in). The disadvantage of it is very dry air. Used this as a heat mat. I couldn't 'overcome' myself to cut the spike. It had already a bud forming. Of course it dried off and got absorbed. Quite frankly I didn't have the guts to check the bottle but did it today and found 3 fat new roots (already half pinky finger long, don't know inches)😊 Many regards ❣
@@annareiter952 Hey hon, good morning! Yep we are snowed in! Not as bad as they thought. About 4 inches but it's still flurrying. I'll take pictures when I get dressed and go out to feed the birds. Yes see the plant even dried up the bloom because it didn't have the roots to back it up. Moss must be good for you especially with dry heat. You don't have a humidifier? I am super happy you got some new roots! If you build those now it can possibly bloom this year. Usually once the roots come it can take 2 years to recover. But never know. It could do a small bloom. Good luck. Have a wonderful week 🤗🌹🩷💚
Thanks!
Aww Thanks so much! I appreciate that more than you know! Have a wonderful week dear friend 🤗🌹🩷💚
Thank you ❤ if I can have a follow up question: is there any other reason that you would prevent cattleya or any other orchid to bloom? Other than it’s lacking roots.
Hey hon thanks so much for super thanks! 😊 The top reason for a Cattleya not to bloom is light. Some need extremely high light to bloom. I have some Cattleya hanging directly under my strong grow lights. Because they actually hang on limestone cliffs in the wild so that's an extreme amount of full sun. Although I have one Cattleya Ruby Hawaiian paradise that I have had over 10 years and it will not bloom! It's a huge plant. I have put in all kinds of light and even divided it but it will not bloom! It's a frustrating plant for me! 😂 Hope that helps. 😊 Have a wonderful week dear friend 🤗🌹🩷💚
Very helpful. Thank you!
Hey hon, you're welcome! I hope it helps! Have a wonderful week! 🤗🌹🩷💚
So many pretty blooms that I cannot pick a favorite.

Let us know how much snow you get! I am on the northern edge of the storm, but it looks like you are right in the middle!
@tracystrombotne2855 Hey hon, I know! I'm a little afraid of what we will get! My Dr called and Changed my appointment to Tuesday already! Not sure it has to do with the snow. But it's definitely coming! Hope you have a wonderful weekend 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
Can't wait to see all the Phals in bloom! Yay for the spike on Phal stuartiana. My supposed stuartiana,I purchased, opened it's buds and it looks nothing like it should. I'm sure it was mislabeled.😮💨
@annavoeggia816 Hey hon, oh no! Really? You get time send me a picture. Maybe I can tell. Have a wonderful weekend dear friend 🤗🌹🩷💚
@hillbillyorchids I'm going to upload a blooms video in a bit. Let me know what you think of the mislabeled stuartiana.I would appreciate your thoughts. 😊
Hey hon I did! I wrote a comment. 😊
did you ever start using the mosquito dips in with your water to deal with the fungus gnats?
@michaelmccarthy4077 Hey Michael 👋 yep I sure did! I can't say I notice a difference yet. The sticky traps seemed to do better! The spider Mites have slowed down. Not sure if that's the mosquito dunks or the cooler temps. I am still using them. Have been since like November. Thanks for watching! Have a wonderful weekend 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚

I sure wish I could see your collection! You could teach me so much! the main thing I wish you could teach me is how NOT to kill Phals! I am an expert on that! 🤯
@@katherinenoblet6567 Hey hon, how are you killing phals? I absolutely love phalaenopsis! That's why I own 80 or so! 🤣 Have a wonderful weekend 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
@ I don't know what I do wrong! no matter what media I have them in, I end up with shriveled floppy leaves! I have to assume I overwater them or repot them at the wrong time. I really don't know why I kill them! My first orchid (Phal) I had for years and it rebloomed every year. It was just in natural lighting in a bright window. Now that I supposedly know so much about growing orchids, I kill every phal I get that is in a pot. I rescued a tiny white one that was completely dried out in a tiny pot and the roots were of course in a tiny original plug....but the leaves looked great and it had two flower spikes. I took it home, soaked it and took it out of the pot and carefully removed it from the plug. I repotted it in a slightly larger clear pot in orchiata, charcoal and chunky perlite....carefully soaked the pot for a couple hours, put it in another outer pot and put it under my filtered windowsill lighting and about 20 inches below my LED lights....soooo has proceeded to get shriveled, floppy leaves and doing what they do for me.🤯 I cut the flower spikes off bc they wilted of course and I figured they were a drain on the little plant....anyway, that is what they do for me. I have two small ones mounted on wood chunks with a bit of moss around the roots and I mist them every day in the morning.....this is my windowsill house environment with about 45-50% house humidity. They HATE me!
let's IM with this. 😁
Do the mounts do same thing?
@ No, I took one that was getting wimpy leaves and put it on a mount. I don't really understand why I cannot figure this out. It is screwy!
"where is that spike" see, I was right, too many plants, not enough space
@@michaelmccarthy4077 Hey Michael 👋 yep my phal wall and Hoya wall will make such a difference! I need to get busy! Now with my lower back hurting I'm just making it through watering. Hey Miss Paula!!! What a treat from Frances 😍🔥 great start to the New Year! I’m so pumped. I’ll see ya tomorrow 😁 Enjoy your weekend 🌺
@OrchidboyTroy Hey sweetie, I KNOW! Frances is just out doing herself! I think i saw another possible spike yesterday when watering! 🤞 she makes 7 spikes! Wow! She is just a happy girl! But sadly this spring she is gonna have to get chopped! She has way over grown her pot and it's an 8 inch pot! I do have a 10 inch pot but we shall see once I get her out! I think it will be good to take her back bulbs off and see what happens. But that will be late spring early summer! So maybe I won't affect next year's blooms! Maybe 🤞 Have a wonderful weekend dear friend! Hope your enjoying the 2 part WEWA's! 😆 🤗🌹🩷💚

@@OrchidboyTroy Oh don't I know it! Plus my back issues will have to be better! That Middleburg Maj about took my back out! 😱 so Frances may kill me! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@OrchidboyTroy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That yellow stuartiana is really hard to find, at least here in EU. I did order it ones from Schwerter, but they send the package during Easter and it got stuck in the warehouse. It had melted and wasn’t able to save it. Catts luckily survived
@tropicalplantsfinland Hey hon, oh gosh! That's crazy! Sorry that happened to ya! I hope you find it again. It's crazy how some stuff is so hard for you all to find yet we have them and somethings you have that we can't find! 🤣 you would think this day in age it wouldn't be so complicated! 🤣 hope you have a wonderful weekend hon, 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
@ same to you ❤️
Happy blooming New Year, Paula 😂
Hey sweetie thanks! You too! May we have many many blooms! 😊 Have a wonderful weekend 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
Great dividing of your beautiful orchid. One day I noticed some of that nasty mold in one of our Oncydium. I also treated it with physan 20. Then, I was wonder if too much mycorrhizal fungi may cause this as well? I purchased a small bag, and I sprinkled some in my new pot, I just wonder/ Hum? Hope you get to sleep Paula; I don't want you to feel like that. Be blessed!
Hey hon, yea I'm not sure what's happened in that pot! 😂it was definitely an over load of something! It sure didn't hurt the roots or the plant. So it seemed to be ok with what was going on in the pot, for now. 😂 Thanks hon, I think my body will settle down eventually. When there is a flare up it's really miserable 😢 I can't wait to get through it! 😂Hope you have a wonderful weekend 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
I guess it is nice living here because I can just take that outside and blast it with the jet nozzle on the hose, rather than cutting through roots. Now I see why you threw your back out.
@michaelmccarthy4077 Hey Michael 👋 yea that would be so easy! 😆 yea it definitely didn't help my back any! 🥺 but she is done now! 🤣 Have a great weekend 🤗🌹🩷💚
Nice repot. Very pretty orchid. We are bracing for a nasty winter storm due this coming Sunday into Monday. Then super cold. 🥶. Been doing some repots myself. I’ll get mold too. Could never figure out why. I always sprayed roots with hydrogen peroxide . I’ll have to try the Physan. Hugs and hope your back gets better. 🥰💕👏💞
@shirleyholt898 Hey sweetie Miss Shirley 👋 we are getting alot of snow today! Its crazy! I guess this will make up for no snow this winter so far! Stay warm sis! Its been difficult watering and resting my back. So doing a little then resting. That's all I can do! Have a wonderful weekend sweetie 🤗🌹🩷💚
If say, you potted a “bag baby” in what might be too big of a pot. Could that have an affect on blooming, and would you consider potting it back down?
@franricks1608 Hey hon, not too likely unless being over potted it stayed too wet and rotted the roots. If it's a vigorous plant it maybe alright if it has a lot of roots. Generally if all is well with the plant, it shouldn't affect blooms. Hope that helps. Have a wonderful weekend 🤗🌹🩷💚
@@hillbillyorchids I just thought that might keep them from blooming. I use pebbles and lava rock like Rick. I don’t think I have a problem overwatering. I probably just need to practice patience. Thank you.
Hey hon, oh if you use lava rock then there is no way over potting is a factor. It's necessary to over pot because of lava rock. Plus it won't allow it to be too soggy or what not. I did do a video for Monday on Size matters 😂 it's a guide to non blooming plants vs seedlings. Also it's about when to allow blooms or not. It was viewers request. Patience can be tricky. But it will fly by before you know it. Hope you have time to watch it Monday. 😊
Hi Paula! 😊 Would it be possible to ask for a video of when would you let orchids to bloom and when not? I just realized that I have been buying mostly seedlings or young orchids, so blooming sized are new to me and mine are getting there. Thank you for this video and wow: those roots!
@tropicalplantsfinland Hey hon, I could make a video for Monday. That gives me a general idea of what to talk about. 😊 Have a wonderful weekend sweetie 🤗🌹🩷💚

Very good info.👍✨💖

Nice repot. She did nicely for you this past year with 5 blooms. I only have one Phrag. I need to also repot it deeper. I think it might bloom next year. I'm hopefully.🤞
@annavoeggia816 Hey hon, yea i ordered Oyster grit so I'll have to add it later. But I have another phrag Fred Wright. It's never attempted to bloom for me. But maybe I can add Oyster grit to it. Happy New Years eve! 🥳🪅🎊🎉🥂
I'm loving all the reds and oranges in your blooms. That Richard Mueller cross is gorgeous!🤩 Fantastic colors... Hope your back is feeling better. I'm having issues too. It’s so strange that here in Finland no one actually was talking about extra calmag. It seem to be ok having just the fertilizer with that seaweed in it. Additionally, one which I really find odd is the use of urea based nitrogen in it. I feel like I’m back in time with these here 😅
@tropicalplantsfinland Hey hon, 👋 yea some really are behind on what Orchids really want. They believe the myths like watering with ice cubes on a tropical plant! Geesh! They need to get with the times. 😂 the older generations were just stuck in their ways I guess. Today it's all about making your Orchid thrive not just survive. 🤣 but i know it's harder for you guys to find what we use here in the states. I 100% recommend the Jack's 2 part fertilizer system. Hands down it's the best absorbed calcium of any fertilizer. The dolomite lime is important. It has to be dolomite lime. Other lime are too hot to use. And calmag is super important imbetween. Glad your looking into it. If you have any questions please ask. Have a wonderful weekend 🤗 🌹 🩷 💚
