    Hi, I am going to shoot in a theatre for the first time and I am stressed out a bit 😅 Technicalities...I own canon 6D mark II but I will borrow lens, so I wanna ask, what will be better, prime lens (something like 35 and 85 which will be a bit costly but I would have high apareture) or 24-70 f2.8? Or something different (theatre hall is pretty big), for example 70-200 and I have my own 50mm. Another thing, I am not sure with that high ISO 😅 I am aware that on the podium will be enough light (hopefully), but on my DSLR going up to 3200 or 6400 ISO will be not as good and quality of photo will drop. Do you use flash? (probably not but still...I wanna be sure) What about white balance? You mentioned it in video, but I am not sure if you mentioned those settings (not in postpr.). Is it okay to use auto or it will be better to use other modes? If other modes, which one is the best?

    Great images and informative video! One thing that was not address was a problem I constantly have when there is any kind of projection behind the performers. From one picture to the next, the colors shift and I have a very hard time getting a shot where the projected image is the actual color that people in the theatre see. What is the secret to that?

    Dear Keith, thank ou for sharing your experiences and knowledge! That really helps a lot! 😀What would you do if you would have to shoot a promotion photo of the theatre group on stage? Something like a group shot, more or less. So no actual performance, no audience, just a crisp clean photo for advertising. - Would you still use the stage's existing lighting setup, to keep the theatre look? Or would you add some lights? And would you change anything else? I am thinking about adding some additional light from a lower angle to fill; and then making it darker in post. Am not sure though... 😀 Edit: The biggest problem that I have is, that I have a black curtain as a background. 😞🙂

Im going to try your set up with the 15-35 clipped and the 28-70 on the strap to see how it does! Do you have any tips for preventing your camera body and lens on the strap from swinging around while you are using the camera on the clip? Thanks again and I subscribed! best, Rick

    It is amazing what you can learn from RUclips. I often watch videos on concert and event photography (which I also do) but never came across one on theater photography. So this is great. I did learn today about using flash white balance, which is a great tip. I am on my second season with a local theater company and still learning. I find spot metering a little too sensitive because often you have a mixture of subjects (fully light and partially light) in the frame. So I use center weighted. Helps a lot. I usually shoot an early rehearsal, which gives the theater some early background shots and then the final dress rehearsal, where I shoot the production shots. So, without an audience, I have free movement, and I know the plot and the must-have scenes beforehand. I have partially switched equipment this year. Now, I use a FF DSLR with a wide angle lens for wide shots using matrix metering. And I use two Olympus bodies with a (FFE) 112mm fast prime and a (FFE) 70-200mm zoom (I love the f/1.4 prime but need a zoom for flexibility). No banding seen so far on the Olympus bodies despite 100% LED stage lighting. But I have yet to find a face recognition system the lets you quickly and easily switch subjects. It's amazing how often the camera chooses the wrong face!

    • @KeithMasonPhotography
      @KeithMasonPhotography 3 месяца назад

      Sounds like you’re quickly getting to grips with the issues of theatre photography and the sort of solutions that work for you. Working with the company to watch rehearsals and learning the show really helps so you know when there is likely to be a gods shot coming up. Nice one!

    Standing joke with my wife is this same "little walk" she suggested we did on a hot summers day a couple of years back. No supplies or water which was dumb. Knackered by the end and sank 2 pints of lime and soda in the Tinner's Arms in a couple of minutes before I could turn to thoughts of beer and food! Turns out it is a "somewhat challenging" walk - though with spectacular scenery.

    I shoot with a Canon 80D, and when I do theater/dance photography I shoot in Shutter Priority so I can set the shutter speed, especially in dance, and will then dial in some exposure compensation. I've tried shooting in full manual mode, but unless the stage lights are bright and don't change, rarely does that happen, then there's no way I can shoot in manual and get a good picture.

    • @KeithMasonPhotography
      @KeithMasonPhotography 7 месяцев назад

      Hi Operatigger. Sorry for taking a minute to get back to you. Setting an acceptable shutter and letting the camera do the rest is a great way to get decent, sharp shots when the lights are changing. And imo, sharp is far better than noisy (plus you can fix noise, you can't easily fix unsharp images). I've just bought a camera with IBIS so I look forward to seeing whether than changes my theatre shooting strategies.

    Hi Keith. Your video inspired me to be a photo tourist in my hometown, Vancouver, Canada. I just returned from Alaska taking photos with one camera, one lens & one film sim (X-T20, Kamlan 21mm, Vivid). Hi there - I don't know the 21mm lens, but the set up for Alaska sounds awesome. Love to see those images. Vancouver is a wonderful city (I've visited three times), and I've certainly done the tourist thing there in Stanley Park and Granville Island and took evening bbqs on Kitsalano Beach (I visited UBC for a couple of weeks in 2007). I also went over to Vancouver Island to Ucluelet which was wonderful. I love to come back again some time.

    • @KeithMasonPhotography
      @KeithMasonPhotography 8 месяцев назад

      I generally shoot in single shot, except when I know there is going to be a jump coming up and I maybe shoot in continuous for that. Regarding WB, I generally set a Kelvin value that suits the set, but I always shoot in TAW so I can adjust the balance in post. As colours can change so much during a show, I will set an appropriate WB for each lighting set up in post and apply that to all the images with that set up so that the set looks consistent overall.

      It would, of course, depend on the size of the body and lenses, but yes, the dividers are all removable and can be repositioned. Best, Keith

      Thanks, Ray. I did consider making them all mono, but that was against the idea for what I was doing. As it was, this shot shouted "MONO!" so I did! Hope you and the family are well.
