Proto “LOS ANGELES” Ratchet TEARDOWN And Overview, Vintage 1/2” & 1/4” Drive
Did you know the 1/2 will fit into the 3/8 ratchets BUT they are thicker and there isn't enough room left over to fit the snap ring back in. These also have a smaller head than other round head ratchets and are my go-to for tight spots when you need a 1/2.
I have this set. They are OK for the price. I also have a Husky 3/8 drive that's ten times nicer. You pay for what you get.
Yeah that’s how it is most times👍
That sucks about the snapring.... i have allways wondered about these... i know there cheaper ratchet but iv wanted one for a few years,, i think i might try out the 1/4 drive... there on ebay brand new for like 15 or 20 bucks... and i betthe 1/4 inch would be pretty strong if the snap ring has no problems........ another great video man...LOL,,
Yeah the 1/4 inch drive might be a good way to go. I have to check those out 👍
Thanks for this video, I just tore down, cleaned and lubricated my old 3/8" drive KAL ratchet using your instructions. Country of origin on mine is Japan. Have been using it since high school when I started wrenching on my first truck. It was given to me by a mechanic for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) so I do believe this company supplied tools for US Government contracts. If I remember correctly the tools in the shop would be replaced every X number of years with new regardless of wear. He had a garage full of things he had saved from being junked during the normal replacement cycle (I'm sure he wasn't supposed to do that). He got me started with a basic tool kit from these leftovers when I was in high school. I'm still using the same old tools 20+ years later. Anyway, the ratchet was having trouble selecting forward or reverse. Disassembled, cleaned in kerosene, lubricated with light oil, reassembled and the ratchet is back to working great. The 3/8" drive was a single pawl compared to your 1/2" drive dual pawl otherwise the same. Thanks for the video if I hadn't run across it that ratchet would probably be in the trash can.
Thanks for sharing that. Glad you got that ratchet back in working order!👍
I have a new one! Does anyone know how much it cost?
Best bet for prices is to check EBay
This ratchet is the only ratchet design that Craftsman currently offers through Sears...All 3 sizes are available except the classic 3/4 drive.....This design is obviously very different from the current Craftsman lineup that you can get at Lowes....These look like they are sourced from the mighty Apex as the date code looks like a Apex code....The Z-AG stands for: Z=some Apex sourced Chinese plant.....AG=2017....So theoretically if these are still being made today in 2025 by the same Apex Chinese manufacturer, the current code would be Z-AO.....But I'm sure you know all of this.😂...It's very sad how the old classic Sears Roebuck &Co Craftsman brand has fallen isn't it as they used to have everything under the sun.?...Good vid.👍
Yeah thanks for all that good info. It’s crazy how much they’ve changed!
I say shitty engineering and shitty design from a brand name who supposedly cares. So simple to check that fit in quality control or route a little deeper so snap ring fits. When that fails under load you'll smash your knuckles and not get your job done. Shame on Craftsmen
Yeah that’s pretty rough, I don’t know how they missed it.
I believe it to be a rare defect. Sears had a lot of problems in this century. Glad Stanley has done such a good job with the brand.
That's a quality control issue, I've seen it a few times on various makes, once on a Craftsman, a Dremel with a cutoff wheel works wonders, just carefully deepen the groove, takes about 60 seconds
Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind 👍
I can't imagine they were all that way. I think that one is just defective and slipped by quality control.
Yeah that’s probably right. But I imagine that the cut out were not as deep as the old Craftsman’s were.🤔
WOW nice find Too bad the Craftsman Ratchet has a fatal flaw that looks like a QC problem hopefully only a few slip by or do they all have the same problem not sure what to say about that I know one thing don't use that Ratchet as a hammer LOL .. Great Video Mr Ratchet man Take care enjoy and your Sunday with a few Beers 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Thanks! I'll try to be more careful using that ratchet as a hammer in the future. 😂
My guess is you got a lemon but on the other hand I haven't seen many ratchet models like that so maybe it wasn't a lemon really a shame if it is because I think it was a good start to a revision thanks for sharing my friend
Thanks for watching, I appreciate your feedback! 👍
@snapringchronicles3020 you're welcome my friend
I have the 1/4" drive version (99967), and it has an adequate groove for the snap ring (not generous, but adequate).
Hey thanks for that info👍
😃👍
Hey man👋
Wow, that lack of a decent groove to retain the snap ring is pretty terrible. I wonder if they're all that bad or if you got a lemon?
I think this was a lemon but I don’t think they had a very deep cut in general to hold those rings🤔
You save me mines got stuck n no i can have a bit of faith to fix it
Nice 👍
Just fixed it 🙌 working perfectly now 🎉🎉
I think the "S" is for "short"... I have these in the flex-head / bent handle and they seem to be labeled "S" or "L", but the length is very similar.
Hey thanks for that info 👍
Does the craftsman batwing mechanism fit in the benchtop ratchet?
No i dont think they are interchangeable
Capri clone
Thanks for that info 👍
"Lost a lot of sleep over it"! LOL! 👍
That’s the spirit! 😂
No lube?!
Very light lube
I have the 44833 long handle 3/8 ratchet. It’s still my go to ratchet to this day.
That’s the long one. I gotta keep an eye out for that one 👍
Litton was a big name in a 1980s high tech product....microwave ovens.
Seems like they did some dabbling with the tools also🤔
the old ones lasted, all the best for the new year.
Thanks and Happy New Year to you 👍
Happy New Year! Thanks for sharing 👍
Happy New Year to you as well! 👍
Nice clean up. I was happy to see it was an easy fix.
Sometimes you get lucky and it’s pretty straight forward 👍
@@snapringchronicles3020 🤓👍
Happy New Year. I have one of those that I got in 1973. By the late 1980s, the ratchet mechanism stuck. Thanks for showing how to fix the problem. Good Luck, Rick
That's awesome! I hope you were able to get it working again.
New ones are dual pawl 72 tooth
Yeah I gotta check those out
Hell yeah....Oil that baby up....Oil is all I use as I have mentioned before...Easy to clean out.....Easy to re-apply.....Nothing sounds better than the clicks of a ratchet with thin oil inside of it instead of thick heavy grease....Happy New Year!
I agree! I like using oil as well. Happy New Year!
I guess if the mechanisms actually break, the ratchets get thrown away, but the ones at garage sales and like venues, usually don’t work because of dried or too much lubrication, or improper reassembly. Makes me wonder if the non-serviceable ratchets will be the survivors long-term. I like being able to take stuff apart, just to see if nothing else, hence my enjoyment of your channel!! Happy Holidays. Great find of a nice condition batwing!!
I agree. It's always fun to see how things are made. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! Great Video on this Snap On. I did the same thing on a Wright 3/8 Ratchet that was NOS that I got on the cheap on ebay. It was Mint but had no movement. I took it apart and lubed it with Super Lube oil. It now works like new.
Happy New Year! Sounds like you got a great deal on that ratchet! 👍
Happy and Healthy 2025! That ratchet is built like a tank. Glad to see a few drops of WD-40 brought it back to life.
Happy New Year! You're right, they sure were well built! 👌
I've never seen a ratchet like that before. It's cool to see you rescue it with a few cents worth of WD-40.
Sometimes that’s all they need👍
Happy new year my man! Hope this is your best year ever...🍻
Thanks and you too!
You need some tighter gloves dude.... haha
Yeah they were a little loose! 😂
Holly Ratchet Batman where have you been hiding Nice to see you back ... Merry Christmas & Happy New Year if you want to hit 3000 subscribers keep putting out more great videos ... Take care and enjoy your Sunday
Thanks, I hope you're having a good Sunday too and Happy New Year!🥳 👍
Great video as always. You always have great content and I enjoy your channel. Hope you have a happy New Year and much growth and success with your channel.
Thank you. I have learned a lot from you since watching!😃
I'm glad to hear that!👍
Nice. You can use brake clean and compressed air (cover it with a rag to keep it contained) to get rid of all the old grease. Then lube it up.
Thanks for the tip!👍
Happy holidays & new year bud. Thanks for another great video. I know the channel growth is slow, but hang in there. You've got a great delivery style and possess an expertise that will get recognized in due time. Truly one of my favorite channels.
Thank you for the kind words and support, it means a lot! 👍
One man's trash really was another man's treasure
That’s very true!👍
WD-40 To The Rescue !!
It’s always within arms length lol!
Always good to see your latest stuff. Keep up the good work!
Appreciate that 👍. Thanks for watching
Excellent demonstration. I have a Vulcan S-52, and after a little research found your other tear-down video & then this one. I figured I must be looking at a locking ring exactly as you showed. It's currently sitting in diesel fuel & I'll try to get it all apart & cleaned up. I got a collection of tools from a junked barn. including a 3/8 Snap-on ratchet from 1948 if I'm not mistaken - I gave it to our local Snap-on guy. Figured the Vulcan had to be good quality - it just looks that way.
Thank you very much! That’s a really neat collection of tools. 👍
What if you add more grease to the teeth?
I wouldn’t add a lot. A smaller amount goes a long way.
Thanks for your video. I have one of these that I acquired from my father. I don't use it very often because I only have the ratchet and not a set but I have often been curious about it so your video was perfect for me. I actually like the switch mechanism, but I can see it being a negative because it's easy to accidentally hit the switch up against something when using in tight areas. I did subscribe and I hope you have a great 2025.
That's awesome to hear! I'm glad the video was helpful. Thanks for the subscription 👍
Get to it
Ok 👌
I‘m looking for one. Does it hold an edge?
Mine came with an edge which isn’t normal on a original M1905 bayonet. I haven’t tested the edge so unfortunately I can’t speak on its edge retention
I got a Sparta basically the same as the Champion. Mine is in mint condition. Tight flex-head. Just wanted to update you on a hack to make it better. I ordered Vintage PENNCRAFT 3/8” Drive Ratchet Thumb Wheel Quick Release 3679 USA You can also get a Husky version (all made by New Britain) Now i have less back drag, a quick release and a thumbwheel!
Cool find. I haven’t seen one of the Sparta flex heads yet👍
Nice rebuild video. Love these Craftsman round head fine tooth ratchets. Recently found a 3/8" RHFT flex head version! ruclips.net/video/sa7Wxu_8od4/видео.html
Nice find!👍 I don’t think I have this one yet. I got the Easco and K-D versions of this flex.
I got one of these 20 years ago in a set and it’s served me well for occasional DIY mechanicking. Until last week when I was tightening down on a battery lug and there were some sparks and some glowing and now somehow it no longer turns 😂🙈. I got the screws out and the plate off but nothing else would move so I went looking for a video to tell me how to take it apart, and here you are! I will go see if I can just hammer it apart with a punch now. There were a few shavings inside and there’s one spot where the teeth are worn down but overall it’s in decent shape I think.
Sound like you might have welded some of the parts together possibly🤔Hopefully just a weak weld that you can break and smooth out easily
I have earlier version of that series of ratchet from 1/4"- 3/4" and think they are great.
Yeah they’re one of my favorites 👍
