Bodhi Tree Surfboards was established in 2009 in Perth, Western Australia. We teach people how to build their own hollow wooden surfboards. The boards are built to surf, we use locally grown paulownia timber, we cut, mill and machine all of the timber we use and use laser cut frames that we design and cut in house. We believe that building a hollow wooden surfboards should be easy and that you don't need any special skills to achieve a great outcome. Over time we'll share how we do what we do to make it easy for you to build your own board at home. It doesn't matter where you get your frame from we hope to give you hints and tips to help you build any board. The construction phase of any build is clunky and step by step, the art of building any board is the shaping and understanding the dynamics of how a board works, we will help you with the build and the art. Please feel free to ask questions and give suggestions for what you want to see and know to get you building your own board.

In this episode we trim the excess off the rails of Jono's 9ft mal and get the board ready for rail shaping. In this step we use a jigsaw and trimmer and a couple of different router bits, make sure you have your protective gear ready as it is potentially a very dangerous stage. If you don't have a trimmer you can use a belt sander or just start rasping once you've jigsawed the excess off.

Attaching the rails. So Jono has squared up the frame ready for the rails and in this episode he plugs them on. Make sure you get yourself a roll of builders film for your table as it will ensure your surfboard doesn't have a table attachment. Maybe you could build a tool holder for the belt sander so that you can maintain the perpendicular relationship to the table…

I found a spot in southern California that looks like they sell it sheets... Columbia Forest Products ... I'm sure there more places out there... I just googled "bendy plywood sheets" and it was one of the first to pop up...
Bravo! I’ve been making hollow wooden boards for over 10 years and I think you really nailed it when you talked about the meditative state one is in while making a board. I also like the idea that there are no mistakes just changes because that’s the mindset you have to have when you do encompass something that you weren’t planning on. I also really like the idea of bringing this craft to those who need that peace it brings. I’ve been wanting to teach my middle schoolers this craft as well. Please keep posting your progress even if it’s in a less polished form I think we would all like to see how you are putting this together and be able to play it in our room where we are at.
