4000 Years of Community in this Corner of the Peak District

The Peak District is one of the best places to live and explore in the UK, but where within the Peak District National park is the best place to live? Not far from Buxton, for more than 4000 Years people have chosen to settle in and around, what is now, the village of Chelmorton. From early Neolithic settlers to the Romans, Medieval farmers straight to modern day residents, the corner of the Pe...

The Dam UNLIKE ANYTHING else in the PEAK DISTRICT

One of the benefits of being a relatively wet place, the Peak District is home to many reservoirs and dams. These are both great places to walk and help form the landscape of the Peak District National Park. In the Cheshire Peak District you will find a unique reservoir and dam (very different to the famous Ladybower and Howden Dam). A walk around this will show the hidden gem and engineering m...

The Sun Rises on a NEW Year

Starting the day (and Year) right with perhaps one of the most beautiful sunrises to be seen in the Peak District National Park, UK. As the frost glistened on the floor, I took to the air to see the sun come top on the horizon. Parkhouse hill made the perfect foreground this amazing landscape. (the smaller neighbour of Chrome Hill, part of the famous 'Dragons Back') 2024 feels like the start to...

Fernilee Reservoir - Goyt Valley (3 Mile circular Peak District Walk)

For a short period of time each year the trees of the Peak District treat us to a brilliant show of Autumn colours. One place to view these leaves in all their glory is Fertile Reservoir in the Goyt Valley. This 3 Mile walk is one of the most gentle and accessible of its kind in the Peak (and worth doing at any time of the year). I was recently inspired to do this walk thanks to seeing some gre...

In my opinion, there are few spots in the Peak District as special as Axe Edge. Although far less popular (and maybe less featured) than many popular Peak District spots, the solitude and calm that can be found on Axe Edge on a good evening is hard to beat. Close to Buxton and with views that's stretch across the entire national park on a clear day, Axe edge delivers on so many levels. On one o...
BAREFOOT Hiking // PROS, CONS + TIPS

Barefoot Hiking in the Peak District may not be the most 'normal' way of enjoying the National Park, but give it a go and you might be surprised of the benefits it can give to you. I headed up on to the moors for one of my regular walks near Buxton, Burbage Edge to Goyt Valley via Berry Clough. This time spending a mile or of the walk without my hiking boots. I explored the Pros and Cons of thi...

Great video
Thank you very much. Have a great weekend 👍
Spent a decade or more visiting friends at Chelmorton and staying there. I think the Swindles own the lowe, and have no problems visiting the summit or five wells or the chambered cairn - ask at the pub, they're nice.
Thank you, that is very useful to know. I know that the chambered tomb is signposted with its permissive footpath but didn’t want to promote anyone going to the summit of low without gaining permission first. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Have a great weekend
Wow, never knew this.
Always very happy to be able to share something new to people 👍 have a great week
Great video! love the tales. would be awesome to come on a walk with you.
Thank you ☺️ you know you are always welcome at anytime. We will come and see you soon also 👍
Loved that H. Beautiful footage and editing. That’s a cracking part of the Peak for many reasons.
Thank you 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hope you are keeping well?
@ All good here thanks - although no longer in Buxton. Hope you are too. Must have a catch up at some point. Maybe a trip into Ashford Black Marble Mine?
@ yes that would be good 👍 a long overdue catch up is needed
Great video Harrison and as always - so much knowledge! Loved the tales of the spooky creatures living in the Peaks.
Thanks Rose, I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊 I hope you are up to something suitably spooky this evening 👻
08:50 I always feel nervous sitting with my back to a cave haha. Great video Thom, enjoyed this one a lot
Thank you 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did think about editing something creeping about in the cave behind me to make it even more spooky haha.
03:30 I had a spooky experience at Swallet Waterfall earlier this year, someone told me it could have been a Boggart
Boggarts ae not something I knew much about (other than the ones in Harry Potter) until my wife told me about them and I did my research ahead of this video
Love this video 🧡🍂🤎 It's great hearing about all the history and spooky stuff on these walks. Outstanding and well put together Harrison.🧡 Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing more in the future! By the way, you're looking rather dapper in this one! 😍😄 Keep up the good work 🔥🤎🔥🧡
Thank you very much. I thought it would be worth dressing for the occasion with this one being a little different. Glad you enjoyed the video 😊 have a great week.
Loved it 🎃 100% need to get out to these places
Thank you mate, glad you enjoyed. These locations are really not far away, let me know when you fancy it and we can take the dogs out.
Cracking video and one we were very much looking forward to watching 👻 Thank you for showing us some new places we've never even heard of and thank you for the shout out at the end 😊✌️
Always a pleasure to be able to shout you guys out. Thank you for the watch and I’m glad I could show you somewhere new
Really enjoyed this episode, was a great mix of Thom Topics and creepy vibes all rolled into one 👻👻 Great stuff 👌
Thank you very much 😊 I’m glad I got the balance right
Wishing everyone a Happy Halloween 🎃 If you are watching this at the end of October or in the future, I hope you enjoy some local Derbyshire and Peak District folklore. Be sure to like the video and if you have any ideas of places for me to visit in 2025 be sure to let me know in the comments.
That was different and very enjoyable indeed. Some super footage of some remarkable landscape too. Thanks for sharing it.
I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍 I was bit worried when making it that it would be too far away from my usual kind of content but I think the blend of usual content and 'spooky' stuff worked for this one. Hope you have had a great weekend.
@@ThomTopics It worked really well! Maybe some Magpie mine or Cromford area in the future?
@@morturn they could well be on the list of possible videos for next year 🤔 thank you for the tips 👍
Brilliant video. Best one yet!
Thank you very much Lee, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hope you have had a look weekend.
I enjoyed that. Have you been to Fin Cop? I did it once (on a very dodgy path) no evidence anyone goes there and definitely an atmosphere. I didn’t feel comfortable there. Lots and lots of flies as well when I went.
Yes it's a great spot up there and one that is far quieter like you said. I would like to return to make some content up there for sure. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment
Very interesting video you put together, lots of history about the places. Very well explained too, 👍 i can say I've been to magpie mine, lots to look at there.
Thank you very much., I'm glad you enjoyed it. Magpie mine is a very cool spot. I only just managed to get my bits there filmed a few weeks ago before the storms rolled in. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you have had a great weekend
First!
Hope you enjoyed 👍
When i was younger i used to walk round Combs Moss off the Glossop to Buxton bus. Walked it about 10 times never saw another soul. Used to also visit the very small plane wreck site. Great blog
Thank you for taking the time to watch and share your story with me. I have loved some of the responses I have had on this video with people like yourself sharing these kind of memories. It is clearly a special place to a lot of people. Have a great week.
Thanks for this, I know the Hope Valley and Kinder area quite well from the train so it's great to find a "new" area equally as accessible.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you for taking the time to watch. It's a great place to explore up there, especially if it's new to you. A full circular of the plateau is well worth doing also as the walk along Combs edge is beautiful. Have a great week.
@@ThomTopics Thanks - I found the circular edges walk on Walking Britain after seeing your video so will be scheduling that one in soon.
@@ricoblade1 I hope you enjoy it 👍 be warned that it can get boggy/slippy on the combs edge side of the plateau after heavy rain. Not to put you off as it’s a great walk in any weather
Hi great walk any cows en route . Do you have a gpx file ? Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment 😊 no cows anywhere on the route. I don’t have a gpx file for the route but I will plot it in AllTrails this evening and put into the video description 👍 hope you have a great weekend
@@ThomTopics thank you much appreciated
@@trevor4382 sorry for the delay, busy weekend. I have now created the map on allTrails and added a link to the video description. I hope you enjoy the walk when you go to do it. Take Care
Some grade A Thom Topics content, cracking video that was worth the wait. Some really lovely shots in this, especially the drone work which no doubt had a bit of fun staying up there in those winds 😅 Makes us want to come out and explore this little corner of the Peak District! 💚
Thank you very much 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Luckily most of the drone footage was filmed a week before I did the rest of the filming. The drone bit by the crater was on the day and it was not happy about flying in those winds 😂 I think we should have a little adventure over to those shooting cabins together as I know how much you love a Peak District cabin.
@@ThomTopics I don't know whatever gave you that idea 👀👀
@@HayandKyle 😂😂😂
I love the Goyt, unreal amounts of history, there's a blown up gunpowder factory under Fernilee reservoir. I'd like to see Chelmorton with it's in tact field system and the beautiful Deep Dale with it's very old cave (secret rough camping spot), also the chambered cairn on Chelmorton Lowe, but honestly I struggle to find parts of the peak district that I don't want to see. You can throw a dart at a map and you'll end up somewhere astonishingly beautiful. Another killer video - I loved it especially the drone footage.
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I didn't know about the gunpowder factory, I will have to do some background reading on that. I couldn't agree more with you about how beautiful everywhere is in the Peak, I feel very lucky that we have these places to explore. You are in luck about the sites around Chelmorton as I made a video about these sites earlier in the year (the thumbnail has '4000+ year old tomb' on it. Hope you enjoy 👍
Love hill forts, this one is similar to Fin Cop. There's some beautiful climbs at Castle Naze (zig zag is a fantastic HVS). That walk looks brilliant - I'm gonna do it, wonderful video.
It’s a fantastic walk, well worth heading up there 👍🥾 I havnt actually climbed at Castle Naze for a couple of years now but it’s such a great crag. I did scoop face last time which was an awesome route, some proper gritstone friction. Thank you for watching and commenting 😊
I'm about 10 seconds in and absolutely love this already.
Another fantastic video and love that you're showing a walk that can be accessed by public transport - I can see this in side series of walks in the peaks without a car ☺️ definitely adding this to the list 🌲
I hope the rest of the video held up to the first 10 seconds 😂😂 thank you for watching Rose 😊
There's a bus from Buxton to Macclesfield it's the 58 and only £2, it's a nice walk in to Errwood from the Cat and Fiddle.
Thank you for letting me know, I hadn't considered that bus route as a way to access the goyt 👍 I really do need to make more use of the public transport up here rather than just relying on a car.
Great little piece there mate, makes me want to take a trip home - thank you for sharing!
Thank you mate. I thought this one might trigger some memories when I saw you had subscribed. You will have to let me know when you next come up this direction to see the family.
The Combs Moss is a fantastic place to explore. If you are able, I would highly recommend a visit. Be sure to Like comment and subscribe and if you have any ideas of where I should visit next, let me know in the comments.
I suggest Chrome Hill setting off from the Quiet Woman pub (if it's still there)
@@wayout6092 I do love it over there. And so have a plan to include it in to a video project that I had hoped to do/film this summer as I need maximum amount of daylight to film the day. When I drove past the quiet woman a few days ago it looked like they were renovating the building, both sure if it will reopen as a pub or they are turning it into a residential property 🤷♂️
That wind was something else. This is the second week on the bounce the weather has prevented me from going out 😒
It was properly windy that day, I'm surprised the audi came out as well as it did 😂 It is a pain when the weather stop play. I have gotten soaked twice today already just walking the dog
Interesting balance of pros and cons. Barefoot in winter next?
Barefoot in the snow could make for an interesting walk
Stunning landscape to explore in the Peak
And very easy to get to from the nearby cities and surrounding Peak District towns
Another amazing video Harrison. 💚 Loved everything about it especially the historical and nature aspects! You're so lucky to have all that on your doorstep! Looking forward to the next one already. We can always depend on you to produce something brilliant! Take care and thank you for sharing your adventure ❤️😍🥰💚
Thank you so much, you are too kind as always. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It is a great area to explore and a really good option when looking for a quieter place to explore. Hope you have had a great weekend.
Thanks Thom, another amazing and informative video. I really like how you have included both stories of distant past and not so distant past uses of the landscape. Well worth waiting for.
Thank you so much. It all came together nicely I think. I had planned to make a whole video just about lightwood at one point but it wasn't really working out so I am glad I could include it as an aspect of this video/walk. Hope you have had a great weekend.
Thanks Thom another great video for walking in the Peak District national park. Looks beautiful and rugged. Never completed this walk - is it challenging in terms of steepness / uneven surfaces or just like path from Pyms Chair to Shining Tor? Thanks again - looking forward to the next video. 😀
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The pathways are all pretty good and not tough going. It doesn't have the flagstones that you have near pyms chair but as long as it hasn't been raining to heavily the paths are good. In terms of steepness it is not too bad also. It's a little bit of a climb on to the platau at either end (but no scrambling needed) once up there the pathways are fairly flat.
You made a great job of putting that all together, beautiful scenery and all the information about it. Good drone work , bet that was a bit windy for it. Well worth waiting for, keep them coming 👍
Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed and thank you as always for taking the time to watch. Trying to fly the drone above the crater was certainly a bit tricky in the wind haha.
Really enjoyed that! Great video
Thank you mate, we will ahve to do that walk together some time soon.
Brilliant video as usual Mr Topics.❤️ Really enjoyed 'walking' the Goyt river with you and hearing about all the historical aspects along the way. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us and I'm looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work 😃🔥🔥❤️
Thank you as always 🙏 glad you enjoyed coming on the journey 😊 it won’t be long to wait until the next video this time 🤞 Have a great weekend
Great video, useful tips for barefooting
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed. Thanks for taking the time to watch and hope you have a good week.
Lovely video, thank you 😊 Do you have a map of the walk as well?
Thank you for taking the time to watch, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I havn't gotten round to plotting this route on allTrails yet unfortunately but if you look for Derbyshire Bridge car park (what3words - exotic.bells.hinders or Map Grid ref: SK01857155) that will mark the start of the walk on the video. The route never strays more than 50m or so from the river/reservoirs following them downstream in a northward direction so there is never much risk of going far off route. I hope this is helpful and I will try and get the route plotted on a map soon also. Thanks and have great week.
Another wonderful video 😊
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It shouldn't be nearly a long of wait until the next new one this time. Have a great week
