    Credit the naturalism of the acting to director Malcolm St. Clair. Miss Brooks disgraced herself when she described St. Clair as an incompetent and drunk. A pity.

    Took me 8 hours a day for three hours and I was using a Hakko de-soldering tool. (NC-173) You’re fast. Mine was a wreck though. I had to re-wire tons of stuff along the way. I plan on adding that product detector mod you speak of. Right now I’m adding a crystal calibrator which required adding the second octal jack on back. Mine is an early -173 and didn’t have one. I’m using push/pull on/off pits on the volume and tone to control the calibrator. It’s a National XCU-27. I’m not sure about your carbon resistors, but some of mine were double the marked resistance. Love how you used those very nice Vishay resistors.

    • @thevintageaudiolife
      @thevintageaudiolife 3 месяца назад

      All 80% of the carbons were double like you said. Funny that your bring up product detector, yesterday i just finished building one using a 6j6 tube that plugs into the accessory socket. Looks clean, i used some old metal relay enclosure, actually looks as if it came from the factory. I'll make a video soon, I have a National HRO-50 that i need to bring up to working condition, considering painting it since its rusty, besides i hate that gray color National uses. So look out for that video i should post soon! and thanks for your interest and comments!

    Wow. Nicely done. Are those new brown Vishay precision resistors? Also, the mod you were describing as a product detector appeared to have two relays on top? Were they, or something else?

    • @thevintageaudiolife
      @thevintageaudiolife 3 месяца назад

      Hello, yes they are Vishay resisters. The relays are something else, i think it this receiver was used with a transmitter, looks like high voltage was cut off the receiver when transmitter kicked on. At the end i removed the product, i found a neat schematic for a modern product detector, but was too lazy to wire it on, thanks for watching!

    So i found one of these in my garage today... plugged in a headset, and the antenna amplification seemed to have some effect on the sound output but it wasn't picking up anything; where to start...?

    • @thevintageaudiolife
      @thevintageaudiolife 4 месяца назад

      Hello, the receiver dates back to the 1940's, so with time they will develop corrosion on the switches and contacts. Before you plug it in, i recommend you use some contact cleaner and spray all switches and contacts. Also, most likely you will have a few faulty resistors or capacitors, thus the receiver might not work. Most importantly you will have the original wax yellow capacitors, those defiantly need to be replaced. they leak current and will degrade the receiver and sometimes will tend to short out and become resistors rather than capacitors. I would not use it until you replace all those yellow waxy capacitors, or you might damage the power supply. The one you see in this video, i replaced all components.

    I build amps too and I find that 12AU7 does give you lower volume and less gain but it loses something tone wise. Also, a deluxe has two channels so you have a volume for each and a shared tone. The two channels are interactive so you use the two channels in conjunction because the volumes affect the volume tone and gain of one channel even though you are plugged in the other. You can even jumper the channels to get more crunch. It is a unique design that you basically tweak all three knobs and get a nice rhythm tone, to clean up you turn the guitar volume knob down, to get lead tone use an overdrive.

    Mystery word written on chassis (10:20) is "Relay". The lead from the antenna terminal to the grid cap of the 6K8 might have been installed to bypass a defective antenna coil. Given the condition of this chassis it would be useful to check the integrity of the IF transformers, and the antenna and RF coils so you'll know what components you'll need to locate if the set is ever going to work. I'm looking forward to watching you work on this chassis!

      Thanks for the input, after closer inspection i think one of the antenna coils might be damaged. Looks like it was poked with a sharp object and might have nicked the enamel wire, but not 100% sure yet, need to test things. Thanks!
