I remember those gms how pissed Gretzky was and he did have every right to be he wasn't with the dirty cheap shots the Canadian players were getting without any penalties being called against the other teams si I was wondering if the refs were going to call the gold medal gm properly and they basically did and then r Canadian boys showed just exactly to the world that Canada was and is still the best country in the world for hockey 🏒 😂!!

My favorite moment was obviously the coffin ceiling goal by Sakic near the end of the gold medal game, but after to terrible games by Canada to open the tournament, I’ll never forget injured captain Mario Lemieux, after being benched for the 2nd game, waking Canada up by scoring the first 2 goals against the Czechs in game 3.

5:55 Gretzky likes to whine a lot, eh. When Canada is losing they always play dirty, slashing, croschecking, poking, cheapshots you name it. But that's okay, that's hockey, eh. European teams suffered this treatment from Canadians for decades, but they learned the game. So by the late ninetees they started to give back. And then is the "poor canadians" being the victims, being "hated". No they just got back what they planted along those years with their superiority complex.

The trap was created to counter the sudden burst of growing talent in the league. We will never see another pool of talent like the 90s EVER again. In order to counter all that talent, they had to increase the defense and toughness. The players were getting bigger, faster, and more talented, so they countered it with more toughness. It's that simple. Make a 2020s All-Stars team and put it against a late 90s All-Stars team in a real game. The 2020s team (and their weak 2024 style defense) would get shut down and destroyed, it's not even funny. The 2020s would have 0% chance to win with the 90s rules, EVERYBODY knows that! Whereas the odds for the late 90s team with modern rules is fairly 50-50. In a one game format, the advantage would go to the 2020s team with modern rules, so 25-75 or 20-80 perhaps. However, in a playoff format, the late 90s team would have the advantage the longer the series are. MOREOVER, remove the referees from the ice, now tell me what are the odds? 🤣 These kids are clueless.

Yeah, interesting. I can see why folks would like this era, it was pretty tight as hell and often brutal. Not 50's to 80's level brutal, but still pretty darn ugly and I think in many ways, far more cynical. This was despite the NHL beginning to clamp down on enforcers and brawlers midway through this cultural moment. Unfortunately, with the demise of the enforcers, the policing of grievous fouls committed on offensive players on and off the puck went to shit. Moreover, without the tough guys around, you actually saw a lot more persistant dirty shit going on. Pulling, sticking, hooking, cheap elbow shots... some of them are truly hideous to behold. Thus, a lot of excellent players had to become nasty guys out there. That for me is one of the sadder aspects of the DPE.

I grew up with the yotes, they are the reason I play an watch Hockey. My first ever game live was their mascots birthday against the Stars. I got to go to one of their Playoffs games when they played against Nashville. This team has done so much for me and I am sad they are gone. I think they should just put them in the suns stadium, Utah has shown that the awkward stadium layout can work, and I honestly think the section that hangs off looks cool. I just want Hockey back in my home. Fuck UTAH!!!

So The Allen Cup was as prestigious as The Stanley Cup. Calgary Stampeders were our adult team. One could argue that the teams that played in The Corral as Home Ice could be considered for the Battle of Alberta. This was good except you need to run your audio through a processor to get rid of the mic blows. Do a test and adjust your mic position next time and it won't even happen. Cheers

Era sucked

I was lucky enough to grow up as a teenager in Alberta in the 80s. It was the greatest hockey in the history of the NHL. Calgary had a great team the entire time but the Oilers were always just a little better. The Flames finally got over the hump because of Steve Smith's own-goal. To those that never witnessed this stuff, I can't really describe how wild it all was.

So they should make a huge crease around the goalie. Goalie stays there etc. Anytime a player enters that crease for whatever reason, play should be whistled down.

Wow. This was an amazing insightful summary of a great rivalry in the NHL. While I am an Oilers fan and I do reside in Calgary, I have nothing but respect for the Flames. As long as the Flames can build around Wolf, they have a great future. Also, I was wondering if you are somehow related to another Flames fan with a great RUclips channel, Jonathan Hawkey.
