The Kawasaki Versys X300 is a great bike to be customized to transform it into what you want to ride. My 2021 was the ABS model with no factory accessories. Well - that got me motivated to make some changes. The first thing was to install a center stand, crash bars and the auxiliary lights that are all genuine Kawasaki additions. But that was just the start. Next the gearing on the Versys X300 is considered low. First gear rev's so quick that I didn't use it and I would just start in second gear. So, the challenge was to go from factory 14 Tooth to a 15 Tooth with the rubber cushion but finding one to fit led to some help from J.T. Sprockets. From there you should watch videos on my channel. It is a journey - installing the best skid plate out there, Barkbusters, many modifications to T-Rex Heavy Duty Skip Plate to allow the whole bike to be lifted up in the air on a traditional motorcycle jack and more. Enjoy from Dave's Garage to the world of Versys X300 customization.
Motorcycle Chain slack adjustment procedure covering assemblies, bolts, torque wrench, chain guide
Motorcycle chain slack adjustment is critical to longevity of the components, safety for the rider and all other vehicles, and is demonstrated in this video. The assemblies, chain inspection, torque wrench, and using a chain guide by Motion Pro. I find the relationship between the slack measurement with the bike on the ground with riders weight and the slack measurement with the bike on the center stand for much easier quick slack checks.

Unfortunatly, this wouldn't work on my bike. Wish it would have. A simple and easy way to strengthen those bars.
It sounds like you may have a different skid plate.
@@trekOCLVone The sides on the T-Rex heavy duty plate I have extend higher than yours. Also the brackets were too short to reach the crash bar clamp.
Thanks for posting this video. I have a vac with the same filter issue. I ordereded the filter and o'ring that you referenced in the video. I was not able to make your option 2 work without cutting a 1/4 in thick round disk to take up the space. Thei spacer disk with the filter and o'ring work perfect.
With the Oring and filter only is a "barely" works option, but I was searching for a simple solution. I recently am using the Oring option 2 and does seem to be ok but I think some dust is getting by the Oring. The price of the filters really went up as the original supplier seems to disappear. That is the internet. Things seem to come and go overnight. Enjoy your vintage Sears Craftsman Shop Vac.

Would like to add the USB outlet but with a std. USB & one USB-C.
So you want to add one USB-A (many flavors of this) and one USB-C (again there are generations of this also). I actually have this mix on my X300. The dash has the two USB-A type where one is I think 3 amp and the other is simple 1.5 amp. I have the USB-C that is on the wireless phone mount. Even though a lot of devices have the most up to date USB-C I've not needed it yet, but it is there when I will need it. On a typical ride the devices I have are 1) GoPro which is power by one of the USB-A ports on the dash, 2) phone has its wireless mount hardwired into the Aux connector inside the left cowl, 3) Garmin GPS again hardwired into the Aux connector inside the left cowl. I have the Cardo on the helmet which has its own internal battery. I use some tricks to use the Aux (2 green barrel) connectors and the Aux (white 2 pin) connector with both utilizing a "Y" connections so all four items (OEM Aux lights, phone, GPS, GoPro) are powered. I do not cut into any bike wiring. All the add on devices can be removed and the bike reverts back to 100% stock. I also have the Delani Sound Bomb Air Horn on a separate relay that I added as it is a power hog.
@@trekOCLVone Yes, w/ volt mtr. Did not find any that came with bullet connectors on the harness but that should be an easy change. Did you install an inline fuse betw. the bike harness conn. & the outlet?
i had the same issue, and I put anti-thermal silicone on the oil filter door locations
Thanks for the content. When I finally found this it was as if we had experienced the same nightmare. Garmin is not much help and I sensed their support techs know this is an issue in the design. I had success charging directly off my HP laptop power cord. The one with the big on-line AC adapter. I am so frustrated with the continued need to travel with 3 or more power cords because we could figure out how to standardize things sooner.
I hear you. USB (several generations, USB-C, USB mini, USB micro. Then there are the round power cords and the lightening cord for the phone.
@ I found another work around by running the USBC cord off a portable power bank. Both would charge while plugged into AC. This is my best option.

I'm trying to figure out how to add drawers all the way down and turn it into a six or seven shelf work bench. Any ideas ? Or have you seen this done ?
I was at a dyno having my bike tuned. After a run, the operator gets off the bike, with it still spinning , and sprayed the chain wth lube. The next pull was 8 more horsepower.
Fantastic!
I have a soliom pro bf08. Have the same problems. Have used similar ideas. They sent me a new one because the old one stopped working. The new one has a bigger solar panel. I've noticed that the solar panel isn't good enough to keep the battery charged.
This time of year (Nov. Dec.) the solar panel on the Bird Buddy is not able to keep the camera alive. So, I just engineered a remote power source detailed in my video. It's been up and running for over a year and a half. No issues to report. Camera battery remains around 89 to 96% year around.
BTW You dont need to take out everything out like in this video, its much easier to do u just need to remove the top plastic case above the optics and you can install the usb port
This video covers several items all being installed. (USB dash mount, two-piece air horn, phone cradle, Aux lights, frame mounted relay, power/ground wires back to the battery. The best way to get it all done and be able to video record everything the plastic had to come off.
@@trekOCLVone yea thats why i said you can install the usb port

If you simply do NOTHING and ride your bike.....the chain will last many miles. Its all hype cleaning it!
Can you give me some details?
@@trekOCLVone DONT bother cleaning your chain. It aint worth it. Use it till it needs replacing its not expensive. Why be pedantic?
@@jimw7916 What about the rust that will go unimpeded and will certainly destroy the O / X rings in no time?
@@trekOCLVone thats what o-rings are for .......to stop stuff getting inside and to stop original lube getting out!
@@jimw7916 If that is the case with chain and sprocket longevity - wouldn't all X300 owners get the same amount of miles out of the chain/sprockets? But that doesn't seem to be the case. I've read X300 getting 4 to 6 thousand miles before the parts are a problem. Just asking.
thx, it looks great. I do mine every time I wash (1-2 times weekly) my bike :) to kill two birds in one shot ;) I use the 360 brush, very quick clean and easy. And the maxima kit (cleanup-MPPL-chain wax) for about $35. But we both do it our way with the same idea, do it often so the chain and sproke last longer. Good day and thx again
I think it's ok to just go by the manufacturer's recommendation, in particular does the bike need to be on its side stand or center stand, or do they say take the measurement with the wheel on a paddock stand. Knowing this, whatever measurement they specify will be correct and won't matter if the bike is sat on or not. If not specified I would just go with the side stand and take the measurement from there.
Near the end of the video I talk about how the chain was too tight after adjustment with the bike on the side stand and me leaning on the bike over the seat. The X300 seems to have more discrepancy between chain slack being on the center stand or side stand or side stand with my full weight. I've read another X300 owner saying the same thing. If the chain is too tight that is bad for the front sprocket/counter shaft strain. One time I did the owners manual specific method, and the chain ended up being tight to the point it was making a noticeable whining noise I could hear while at lower speeds (high speeds all other noise masked the tight chain whine. The adjustment bolts with just a half turn makes a big difference. So, the takeaway from this video is with the chain tightness spot on I can have the X300 up on the center stand and measure the (new looser but corresponding) slack and that can be also spot on. My chain at the start was a bit loose and there is no harm in that. Too much slack can be really bad. I've seen RUclips videos with bike having a noticeable droop in the chain and I just cringe thinking about what might happen.
@@trekOCLVone I just did a quick check on the x300 service manual and it calls for adjusting the slack on the side stand with 25mm - 35mm- as the specification. I would go with what Kawasaki's service manual calls for. I think they know what they're doing. :)
i wish i had a garage just like you! sadly my parking space is wet gravel and sand that gets everywhere under my bike! i'll try your technique tomorrow for storage season!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing. That will help me quite a bit, I think
Awesome
This video is a "Revision 2".
Have you tried a rigid branded filter? Seems like it’ll take the rigid filters sold today. In the 90, rigid and craftsman I believe were owned by the same company and basically made the same vacs for a while.
I looked up Rigid filters and they were shorter than the filter that I am working with in the video. If you find any filter that is 9.5 inches tall please let me know. Thank you.
@ Im unsure of the dimensions, but they do have a smaller one and a lager one. I’ll send links
Is the bike faster on top end? Does it still have torque pulling through the gears? Thanks...
The 15-tooth reduces the RPM on most gears by 10% (ish). This would stretch out each gear and would have an adverse effect on the torque however, with the X300 with somewhere around 17 lbs/ft. of torque the change would be barely noticeable. If you could do a side by side test with two X300 geared with a 14-tooth and the other 15-tooth front sprocket you might detect the difference. As far as top end - the X300 with the 14-tooth front sprocket will barely get above 100 mph at or near red line on the tach. With the 15-tooth front sprocket the X300 does not have the horse power to get 10% higher to reach red line in 6th gear. The bike just can't get to 110 mph. The X300 will get to the mid 90's mph and that is still fast enough. Legally here we have 70 mph as the fastest allowed. What the 15-tooth front buys you is a X300 that is not so short in the lower gears and allows to stretch out the gears. So - from a stop sign with the 14-tooth front 3rd gear might be needed just to get through the intersection but with the 15-tooth you may only need to be in 2nd gear at the far end of a large intersection. For me just easy riding away from any population center (big city), the X300 isn't at higher RPMs. So, under 60 mph the X300 just seems calmer.
Thanks man, just got mine done and connected on FB in the x300 group.
Fantastic! Another great X300 group is on the Versys Forum. LINK to the X300 forum: www.kawasakiversys.com/forums/#kawasaki-versys-x-300-forum.82

Title of this series ... "Dave ... doing Dave Things" 😉 👍🏻 😃
Hay - JT, thanks for suggesting a great title. Warning - don't buy a underpriced bare bones work bench and then risk of tripling your investment by over improving bench! Fun project though.
Nice. Your videos tend to make me want to head to the garage and tinker with something. Interesting stuff. In what episode will you be installing the led accent lighting and kickin' sound system?
The LED light that came with the bench is up and running. Extra lighting is needed - I'll think of something. In the next video "Part 3" is where all the fun happens. Over the top accessorizing. I've thought about a sound system and started searching for some options. Part 3 won't have any sound system but there are several interesting add on which are aesthetic jewelry especially for a work bench/ tool cart. A peek at what is coming is a quick disconnect full size bench vise. A killer sound system might be a start for the Part 4 video. lol Somebody stop me. I need to get back on the motorcycle content.
After much consideration, I will be including a kick butt sound system in episode Part 3. Why not ? Rhetorical question, as I've already thrown in everything else but the kitchen sink. Filming is starting now.

Made the change following Dave's instructions! Probably couldn't have done it without an air impact. Friend stood on the rear brake. I put the rear tire on the ground a few times while loosening and tightening the front sprocket nut. Sort of equivalent to leaving your car off the jack while loosening and tightening lug nuts. @@DTBB515 Fantastic! At only 200 miles on my X300 I changed out the front to the 15-tooth rubber bumpered front sprocket and never looked back. There are X300 owners that go in the other direction with a 14/47 for extra low-end torque. The X300 engine is from the 300 Ninja that has 14/43 I believe. So, the 15--tooth was the first modification I did on my X300. Glad is all worked out for you and enjoy your little Versys.

Do you think you could cut the 9 1/2 metal frame and reattach with say hose clamp so it would be adjustable then lock it down???
Another RUclips video that I watched did exactly what you mentioned. cut the metal vertical frame and use hose clamps to essentially shorten the frame by about an inch or so and then use the shorter filters that are available. It seemed to work. With my approaches to finding a solution I chose to not cut up the frame. By some very very small chance that someday some company will make a drop-in replacement I leave the frame stock and found the filter shown in my video that with just a hole being drilled and an O-ring used the alternate filter is working great. I am still using this method today.
Thank you! I'm about to install my trex BB today!

Do you have any recommendations on a tire emergency kit for dealing with flats on the road?
Several X300 owners with a rear tire flat have driven their bike home or to a shop. The rear is so stiff it will not come off the bead. The front will need to be fixed on the road. You will need a tube or patch kit and tire irons also a way to air back in. I have a self contained air pump with internal battery.
@@trekOCLVone in other words, a can of slime and portable air compressor may be the best bet instead of trying to carry around all those tools. As the nearest shop could be miles and miles away.

@@trekOCLVone i do not know who else to ask lol. But my versys 300 the tires have been getting awful hot to where the tire pressure increased by 10 the other day. I cannot find anywhere that states the MAX hot psi. Just the cold psi. I was running at 28/32 cold. The back tire was over 40 and the front was almost at 38 when hot. I stopped to let air out cause I literally was able to tell the tires had more pressure. I was concerned the tubes couldn't handle that extra pressure. Has this happened to you?
@@wolfshield2638 I do see an increase in tire pressure and hence an increase in PSI. The TPMS gives me both PSI and temperature at the valve / rim. The front and rear tires cold I have currently at 33 PSI. There is a rule of 10% for tires to change PSI by 10% and that means starting with my front tire it stays pretty cool and close to ambient temperature. So, the front with the ambient temp being 72 may rise only 3 degrees and the PSI will rise only 1 to 2 PSI. This is below the 10% rule, so it is good to go. The rear has much more mass and much less air flow being that is in the back sheltered by the bike. So, the rear will for a 72-degree day the rear will rise to around 86 to 92 degrees resulting in the PSI to go from 33 PSI cold to 36 to 37 hot. That is close to the 10% change rule and is normal behavior. My TPMS is something that gives real time data and I like that and knowing both PSI and temperature of each tire is a great early warning system if something starts to go wrong. It is not mentioned but do you have the Trailmax Mission tires on your X300? If so, going from 32 PSI cold to 40 PSI tells me you must have a TPMS system also and with a gain of 8 PSI that is way above the 10% rule. Is your bike loaded with a lot of weight? Temperature rise is going to be affected with the amount of load added to the bike. I think the Trailmax Mission tires have written on them a max temperature of 40 PSI and that would be cold PSI. If I change my cold PSI on the rear to 36 the temperature rise should be less with the tire flexing less. Also, what type of tubes are you running in the front and rear. If you have replaced the stock IRC tubes with heavy duty tubes that will hold / build more heat and that will show up as a higher PSI gain and therefore temperature rise. I would stay with stock/ regular tubes for that reason.
Dang. I just put a perfectly good set of bedrails in the recycling, literally yesterday. I'm sure I could have found a better use for them. Thanks for sharing the video though. I'm sure at some point I'll end up copying this, just like I've copied many of your x300 mods.
Thank you. Angle iron is something I keep around as I find uses for it every so often. I'll get back to X300 stuff. We are in a heat wave right now and tearing the bike apart isn't going to happen just yet.
@@trekOCLVone haha. I'm in West Palm Beach Florida. I know how the heat can back burner many an outdoor project. Been putting off my bikes oil change for a month now. It's a good thing it's been too hot to ride much. You're an interesting guy though, so I'll tend to give whatever you put out there a chance, bike related or not.
@@papertiger795 Thank you for your compliments. I'm educated in electrical/electronic engineering. But I've been having fun with projects that are mostly mechanical. It has been said that mechanics that you can see is easier to understand, rather than electronics that you see but can't experience firsthand what it is capable of.
@@trekOCLVone I certainly agree with that last statement... I'm educated at RUclips university, and have done some trial and error tinkering here and there. With some success. Anything electrical still has me biting my fingernails with anxiety though.
Thanks for sharing that install Dave. Clean bike and garage!
Great vid. How do I know which is the right relay flasher unit to buy? Thanks to your video I will be upgrading.
Below the video there is all the detail on each of the bulbs and the blinker flasher unit. I chose the flasher with the short cable pigtail to make it much easier to install under the seat. The OEM flasher must be replaced for the blinkers to function properly. Here is the link to the flasher that I suggest and I used on my X300. Blinkers will need new relay(under the seat on the left): www.amazon.com/dp/B08CRD71FD?...
@@trekOCLVone Thanks for the detailed reply. Much appreciated. How did we live before RUclips? Happy and safe riding. From Brisbane Australia.🌞
@@lawrieyoutube4375 One of my favorite RUclips channels is "Dodger Moore" from down under. In my opinion he is a great X300 channel.
@@trekOCLVone Yup. Did you know he is a postman, or a 'postie' as we call them here. He rides a bike all day delivering mail all round the burbs. Look up 'Australian Postie Bike'. They are an Aussie icon.
I removed my skid plate, my bike runs a tad too hot in mountains when tractoring or riding in town on hot days. My bike now runs 2 bars cooler again after taking it back off.
With my T-Rex HD Skid Plate on the bike I don't see a temperature rise on the dashboard. Probably due to where I'm riding which is out in the country mostly. Getting to all those corn fields I do have about 4 miles of traffic that I have to get past. I try to avoid the truly in town traffic light to traffic light kind of riding so, I also don't overheat. With all my riding gear I'm starting to sweat at about 80 degrees. Above that even my mesh gear isn't keeping me from melting. lol
@@trekOCLVone right on, and now Ive decided to put the bash plate back on, and going up a tooth. I will just keep the fan toggled on as needed. I ride kinda hard at times, then down the country paved/cooler air and she cools right down. Such a fun bike to blast around on. Have a good one!
Do you have a video on the custom mount you made for your gps electronics on the front windshield?
I do. I went through an evolution of designs with the windshield that you see in this video. Starting with a store bought bracket with a GPS mount that started to fail I then machined the large aluminum bracket this is visible here that everything (GoPro, Garmin and phone) attaches too. The video details the custom windshield designs I went through to get what you see in this video. The billet aluminum bracket started out a 1/2 inch thick by 5-inch wide by 8-inches tall. Here is the link to the short version windshield video - you can fast forward to about the 5:30 point. LINK ruclips.net/video/0l7nexJPLDk/видео.html&ab_channel=trekOCLVone
Another milestone - 8,000 miles on 15-tooth rubber bumpered front sprocket and I continue to check out the sprockets and chain and it all looks and functions as new. Along with my Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires with over 6,500 miles on them also looking great with 10.3/32nd of an inch tread depth will be going to at least 12,000 miles before I consider a tire change. (new the Trailmax Mission rear had 14.3/32nd of an inch.
Thanks for posting this. I watched it and went ahead and switched mine out. The washers as spacers worked great! The impact gun is a must. The one issue I had was retorquing the sprocket. I ended up having my wife stand on the rear brake while I used my torque wrench LOL. It is a noticeable improvement in rideability. Thanks again.
Fantastic !
Great video
I wasn't clear on how you held the back wheel for the removal of the sprocket nut... just the 2x4, or was it to release the back wheel so you can remove the chain from the front sprocket?🤔
Also, thanks so much for the effort to make the video.... old go pros work great too.
I had the 2x4 just under the wheel for the removal of the front sprocket nut. It wasn't really needed as I used a pneumatic high torque Ingersol Rand impact gun for the nut removal. With the use of the Ingersol Rand the nut came off very fast - less than one second. The rear wheel didn't even move. There are X300 owners that have had a tough time removing that front sprocket nut because they didn't have the pneumatic/electric/battery impact gun. It can be tough to block the wheel and even with a breaker bar the nut doesn't move. The factory spec is 93.7 lbs. ft. That is a lot just and water/dirt/crud and let it rust for a year or more and you will be trying everything. The 2x4 does hold the rear wheel though - it is a good fit. Just get your hands on an good impact gun with a 27mm socket and the sprocket will zip right off.
@@davidwegs1 That old GoPro is a model: 3 + silver and is at least 10 years old by now. I use it for all my videos on my channel. The microphone on that old 3 + silver is excellent and the video is 1920x1080 (1080p) and is also good enough for RUclips. Thank you and If you have any more questions just ask.

Thank you for the compliment. In my case when I go to sell my Versys X300 the new owner will need to decide what to take off of the bike. Every accessory or mod I've done can be reversed or taken off leaving no trace. I've not modified the bike or any wiring in any way. The X300 is such a nice light do-all bike.
