How I See It - Capturing Stillness: Street Photography in a French Coastal Village
Join me as I explore the serene beauty of a quiet French seaside village through the lens of street photography. In this episode of How I See It, I take on the unique challenge of capturing stories in stillness, where the rhythm of life is slower, and every detail tells its own tale.
From sunlit narrow streets to the weathered charm of stone cottages, I’ll show you how to find inspiration in tranquil surroundings. Watch as I navigate the challenges of fewer subjects, blending in as an outsider, and creating compelling compositions in a peaceful, almost timeless setting.

How I See it: Street Photography in Colour 2023
This is the second video from you I watch. And you are so good at presenting and discussing vital elements in street photography, well, not only street photography, your views goes beyond that. And the way you analyse printed versions of your photos is not only uncommon, but also fantastic from a didactic point of view. Your videos, so far I have watched them, are courses in themselves. And that goes either I agree with you or disagree, either you bring up something new, or repeat what I already know. Thanks for sharing, and please keep up your good work.
Very good, I enjoyed this, however, as we watch these images it would be helpful to know which camera/ lens they were taken with.
Thanks Hugh, an great inspirational video 👍🏻 Yes layering and separation is very important ❗️
Happy New Year, Hugh🎉! Great to have you back!! I really like the bicyclist riding into his shadow at 9:21.
Happy New Year! Glad to be back - time is always going to be an issue with the job in the real world, but I'll do what I can. Very grateful for your kind words and support. Thanks so much.
Love your pictures! I always love the "simplicity" which you showed beautifully thank you
Thank you so much! That's so lovely to read.
Nice video 👍 Leica M11?
Correct! Well spotted. And thank you Anders. Are you a Leica shooter?
@ not yet, M11 or Q3.. not decided yet
You have a good eye for this type of work.Appreciated that you breakdown your favourite exposures and it's nice to here some laid back jazz running throughout the video. Makes a nice change from the asian massage parlour music that most photographers (espercially landscape) use in their videos.
Ah that'll be the failed trumpeter in me - glad you enjoyed it. I've learned to tone it down from my overly loud starting position!
Some nice work here Hugh. You even captured some Geoengineering in some of your shots. There's something about French villages. Where is this one btw.
Thanks a million Stevie. Unintentional geoengineering - I can assure you! This was Cherrueix in Brittany.
20 mins in Piccadilly Circus nowadays, I’d want to be a week in a quiet French coastal village with a market. PS. You are correct on French photo law but there is also French photo reality i.e some/most don’t care. Only challenge I’ve had in years was a cheeky joke challenge when I posted a striking shot of a woman with tattoos on the local FB Group and she replied saying “how do I get paid”. I printed the photo, mounted and framed it and met her by arrangement at a local bar to hand it over. She offered to pay me (said no).
That's a great story and a lovely resolution (no pun intended). Central London and a week by the sea - I'd take them both, to be honest! Thanks for confirming the legal aspects. It's ironic when so much of the history of street photography seems to have French roots. Thanks Mark.
@ I’m 21 years here in a small village on the edge of the Massif Central and may get a bit of leeway locally but the same holds true wider in my experience. U.K. people read laws, most other nations read “guidelines” for some things. Just don’t do anything that would p@ss you yourself off and mostly you’ll be fine. You are however completely correct about the law in theory requiring active opt in from any identifiable individual (just to be clear).
Breton boule is played with larger balls. You roll them like skittles rather than throw them ...
My wife always says "going for a walk with you is fine but it does start to get boring when you keep stopping to take a picture of a leaf". (My fav is just street photography full stop, you can just wander about slowly and soak up what's occurring,,,,,)
That sounds so, so familiar! I totally agree - wandering around and just embracing the moment is very valid. Thanks very much David.
Photography is anything you want it to be, Hugh - A law that prohibits images of people probably has a bearing on your description of a beach as 'Street Photography' - imagine bringing out that law in New York!
Thanks H. Good point - for me, street photography is anything that is both candid and has evidence of human presence/interaction. A broad definition, I know, and open to being amended! Hence, the beach.
@hughrawson We're all different, Hugh - it's probably not exactly Coastal Photography either!
Thanks for sharing, Hugh. Interesting to see your thought process. I do enjoy a spot of quiet town photography. Works a different muscle. It gets you focused on the frame and composition, more so than subject, I find.
Thanks very much, Ian. Yes, that's a really good point. I definitely prefer the hustle of a city break for street photography, but I guess one helps you appreciate the other.
Nice to have back again, Hugh. HNY to you and I look forward to viewing your efforts in 2025.
@@daviddaw999 Thanks David - I’ll try to be more present in 25. Happy New Year.
Off-putting muzak.
Thanks - noted.
I’m enjoying this sooo much!! Worth a million and one prizes, Hugh!! Hope you’ll make many more. I live for this, being inspired by creative eyes.
Cooool - thanks so much Mish. So good to have you on board.
I took a screen grab of your “Oedipus Opens Tonight” shot and cropped it to include “Oedipus Opens” and the window of the nearest car. (It must take me 3x the time to watch your videos with all the rewinds and pauses.) I love the way it highlights the two silhouettes facing each other. What a great shot!
Thank you - that’s a really good call on that crop! Thanks for the tip. Obviously, I’m delighted you’re enjoying the videos - thanks so much.
You nailed that crop! The two men’s silhouettes is what totally did it for me!
I love the Fish and Chips shot! Another great video, Hugh! I really appreciate you! When you were waiting for people to go home at 5:39, do you not consider removing them in post? I love your patience, love your pace. I also love the thought of looking for “new” in all the old places.
So glad you like that one. I always grab a shot of that van. I never remove anything in post - only by cropping. It’s a code I have with myself - just feels wrong and against what street photography is about. Plus I’d make a complete mess of it in photoshop!
Thank You. Needed this. Christmas is also coming up, which changes the scenery in the city = new inspiration
@@kne321video Ah yes - all those magical lights. I feel I should be the first to say Merry Christmas. Thanks very much,
@hughrawson Merry Christmas 🙏🏻
Great video, Hugh. I like how the street sweeper turned out in print. I've just picked up a Sigma 90mm to go with a Sony A7C II for a compact setup - looking forward to testing it out on the streets.
Thank you. I’m particularly glad you liked the street sweeper. I did too. Good luck with the new lens - it’ll be interesting to see what you get with that long focal length - more suited to going slow and framing carefully
Thanks, again, Hugh. I don’t lose photographic motivation but I have recently become super motivated to document scenes of Americana - things from my childhood, non-chain standalone shops, hand-painted signs, etc. I look at them as architectural portraits. This focus has helped me channel my energy toward an unintended collection of sorts based on gratitude, nostalgia, and an appreciation for craftsmanship. Thanks for this and all your videos, Hugh. Your friend in Texas, Eric.
Great to hear Eric. Sounds like Edward Weston would be proud of you. Thanks as always.
2:03 Love the choice of blur with the sign and again with the “Slow Down” sign at 2:30. Really beautiful.
Thanks a million Eric
Though I did notice the 'camera police' and got pulled up quite a few times.
Hope you got some pleasing images anyway.
@hughrawson I did thanks, and I'll be back soon.......enjoy
Love that photo of the women on the escalator. Nice one! I am a keen photographer like yourself and like all sorts of photography. I left London 30 odd years ago but go back once a year. I was there a week ago and love shooting around the same area. What strikes me is the incredible amount of photographic opportunity in the city. I had a good couple of days and came away with some winners. The weather was also incredibly good so I could take advantage of shadows/highlights and the blue sky for colour shots. Good stuff!
You were lucky with the weather. Yes, you’re right, it is a fabulously rich place for photos - and it’s ever changing.
the bnw shots look great!
Glad you like them! Thanks so much.
Really appreciate your scene critiques. The discussion about the “5” photos was extremely helpful. And of course, the photo critiques are always great. I really like your border choice in these prints. My favorite print is the matte version of the girl in the tube. I thought you’d say more about all the other characters in the scene, though. Thanks for all you do, Hugh!
Glad you enjoyed it! I could talk for hours about the various characters in any given image - it’s not always a good idea! Thanks so much.
South Bank is always worth a wander, I'm more patient than you! ;)
Hahaha most people are! Thanks so much.
Another great video, subbed. Your channel deserves more views! really good to hear your thought process and post photo review.
Thanks for the sub! And the kind words. Both are really appreciated.
For me its why. Why do I want to make images?
Thanks Tony - do you always find an answer to that?
Thanks for this intelligent analysis of creative block, Hugh. I can see myself in at least four of your reasons.
My pleasure! Very glad it resonated David. Have you find some good routes round it?
Some nice shots fella, I live near Cambridge and seem to struggle getting close to people, I’ve got a Fuji x100v so getting near is a must. Guessing you’re shooting from the hip. I love that you printed them out too.
What a lovely camera. Yes you would need to get in close - but that’s often half the fun. You’re right, I do shoot from the hip a fair bit. I’m trying to do it less often but it’s very instinctive.
Subscribed. Hope to see many more videos on your channel in 2024 and beyond.
Thank you so much- plenty more to come
Good video again. I really like the format. And more importantly I really love your photos. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad you like them! Thanks for taking the time to say so. It means a lot.
Really well done! I really love how you edit in black and white (are the edited right? 😊)
Yes - they are edited. I usually go for deep blacks, crushing the shadows. Thanks so much.
The City affords lots of opportunities, Hugh, and you visited many of the locations that I tend to haunt when in town. For me, the running man outside Lloyd's was the pick of the crop, although all the other images were strong. The Breakfast Spuds picture was another I really liked. You certainly had a productive day.
@@daviddaw999 Thanks David - yeah, I think that was my pick too.
Are your annual books for sale?
I’ve never done that, no. So far, I’ve just made one copy for myself. Thanks for asking Eric.
Some folks may think 90mm is kinda long-ish... but that's the point: very tight framing. With wide angle lenses, sometimes you'll easily put more unwanted stuffs your frame. Of course, documentary-style street photography generally favors wide angle lens, and there's Saul Leiter/Ralph Gibson etc who make abstract-ish shots. Kinda different approach.
Yes - you’re absolutely right. I love the more abstract effect when there is time to frame up and use the 90mm properly.
You’ve been missed! My pick is the ladies at the coffee shop. Love the composition. Love the colors. I really like what you did with the colors in the subway station - especially with my favorite at 1:15. Welcome back and thanks as always for a wonderful tutorial.
Thank you so much! I think that’s my favourite too. Glad to be back. Stay tuned.
Good video 👍🏻🤩 Enjoyed it much
Thank you 🤗that’s great to know
Welcome back! I missed your videos and kept checking whether you released a new one.
Yay, thank you so much Joel - that’s great to know. Lots more in the pipeline!
On your way to 1K subscribers, well done Hugh !
Fingers crossed! Thanks Steve - hope all’s well.
Everyone looked downright miserable on the subway.
Haha yep! Hadn’t realised quite how thrown about you get until I watched it back.
I am surprised that the dog walker going past the red doors of the fire station failed to make the cut. Same with the skirted man - both are quirky images, and I like them a lot.
The dog walker was a close call. Maybe I should do a video of B Sides for the end of the year. The skirted guy was only caught properly on GoPro - I managed to miss most of his head with the camera! Schoolboy error! Thanks for the comment.
Great video but it really, really does not need the constant background music. Just irritating. Videos do not need constant noise.
Noted! Yeah. It’s one of the earlier ones and the sound went up to eleven. Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for the feedback (pun intended).
Nice video. In particular, I enjoyed your explanations of your prints. Thanks
Thanks for watching! And for reaching out - very glad you enjoyed it.
I'm not a person who posts any comments in general... But this video and channel totaly deserves it! I'm shocked that you haven't a big count of subrscribers. And... your photos are just wonderful. They are about my preferred style of "street photography" with architecture beeing the greater structure that paves the lead to humans or their traces. Just subscribed and I'll be keeping an eye around here!
Thank you so very much - what a great comment to receive. It’s early days for me so any feedback really counts but please do spread the word if you’re enjoying it. So glad you like the photos - they are what it’s all about. Thanks again.
Excellent work, love your photography. Now subscribed!
Thank you very much - for the sub and your very kind words. Really appreciate it Jon.
Hope you don't mind if I nit-pick Hugh, does it not bug you that the football fan has a pole growing out of his head?
Haha it does now! It looks slightly like a crucifixion! I honestly hadn’t noticed it in the rush of the moment.
Watching this video completes the task of scrutinising your whole channel for me, so thanks for creating a really inspiring body of work. I eagerly await new videos.
Very glad to read that David - thanks so much for your kind words and hugely appreciated support.
Colour was absolutely necessary in Time Stands Still and A Shade After Twelve. You seem to take shots about something, rather than of something; they do a superb, narrative job.
Good to know! I talk a lot too! I think storytelling is a huge part of me. Thanks David.
