1935 Austin 7 save: Engine SD 480p
Просмотров 266Месяц назад
Marathon session shot over an entire weekend. I deal with a uncooperative engine that was lying dormant and in a junk pile for years. Making one operable distributor from three pieces of junk. Trying to make one operable starter from two clogged and completely seized units. A lot...lot...of hard work. So far I am about 17 hours invested in getting this $100 engine working. Is it really worth it?
1936 Austin 7: Lapping the valves SD 480p

This is an older video that I did not post when I made it. At the tail end of 2023 I continued work on the block of the junker 1936 Austin 7. Here I am lapping the valves in the engine block.

This section has me unsuccessfully trying to sort out the coil and distributor. Geez these other guys make it looks so easy. It's really not. So far I've spent eight hours on this, and still I'm not very close to getting it started even now.
1935 Austin 7 Save part 1 June 2024 SD 480p

I picked up an old Austin 7 engine and gearbox; so happened the entire chassis and drive shaft along with both axels and four wheels were also included at the grand total price of $100. I had to spend an entire day getting it from Connecticut;. But it's such a treasure trove of spares. I have the crazy idea that since Derek of Vice Grip Garage and Jennings from his channel can both start lost e...
Part 4 Austin 7 New Cylinder head gasket installed
Просмотров 5402 месяца назад
I blew my cylinder head gasket; now I am finding other problems... Hey that Pulley that I show wobbling, is on the end of the Camshaft....Duhhh! The starting handle is on the end of the crankshaft...methinks... Anyway I tightened it up. I looked at the old engine that I'm trying to rebuild and its on a taper on the end of the camshaft. I don't see any woodruff key or anything. So I just tighten...

Have you ever seen a spark plug this fouled up?

Did I really blow the cylinder head gasket? There were other problems for sure. I wish I could figure it out.

I blew my cylinder head gasket. Did I replace it correctly? Was that ever the problem in the first place. My Dad thinks I have cracked the block. OMG!!!

Hoping to see it running in a few weeks! Good luck i'm in the same situation at the moment :D
Thanks. I’m in Scotland right now. My Dad ( 90 years old!). Just dug out a starter and distributer. Maybe that might help! What are you working on?
working on my Austin seven special that has to be ready for the coupe florio ( st brieuc ) the 7th September. Tonight is fitting pistons to Conrods 😊
@@Gu1hen Wow. Fantastic. Good luck. I’m sure you’ll have a ball. I am a bit nervous with long distances in my Opal at the moment. I have to be more courageous like you!
Very boring video 👎
I agree with you; I’m thinking that I need to edit these some more and maybe if there are some interesting bits and pieces just edit out the boring stuff and end up with one less boring video with a shorter compilation of maybe more interesting stuff. Any advice is welcome.
That engine is so small it can to go in a garden tractor
Your right! Even back in the 30’s someone put it in a motorcycle. My Dad once won a competition with a mate: they had to drive the car 15 feet, jump out unbolt the engine, then lift it out with their bare hands, run around the car while carrying the engine, then bolt it back in, start the car then drive 15 feet to the finish line…my Dad and his mate did it in 15 minutes… so it’s a small simple engine. You’d think I’d be able to start it more easily 🥹
Thanks Peter. I can use any help I can get!😂
Hi Peter, I’m really struggling with this to be truthful. I finally got a spark at the plug but very weak! If you’re interested I can give you chapter and verse on how I got there; but I suspect you could have done it in a couple of minutes compared to my several hours. I feel hopeless with this stuff sometimes… it’s sheer stubbornness that keeps me going. 😊
I only suggested it because I've come across it before on an a series classic mini. Good luck. I know nothing about Austin sevens could be different.
Is it the earth wire earthing the baseplate?
I gave it a thumbs up, but not much content in this video. Just a couple of dudes looking an frame and engine.
Thanks for the thumbs up. I get what your saying. I'm gonna try and develop a little bit more content related to this engine in particular. I don't know if I can even get it started. It's seized! But I'm gonna try.
And no electronics! Probably no brakes either!
Not even a wire...well one battery cable. Everything else is not there...and only half the distributor. Someone...in their wisdom cut off all the brake cables (yes brake cables; like a bike); so you're right. No brakes!
Congratulations on your purchase! I had no idea that the Austin Seven had that type of rear suspension, by the way. I had assumed it had conventional leaf springs. I don't think I dare hazard a guess as to what to call this setup!
Wow! Good eyes. I had to lope down into the garage to have a look to see if the rear suspension was even there! I skipped right over that part! So they are there and its called a quarter elliptic spring set up (I think...someone will tell me if I'm wrong). There were friction disk dampers front and back (semi elliptic spring on the front mounted transversely). Well all that sounds good, but I may be talking complete gibberish! Anyway on my running Austin 7 (1937 two seater tourer) the suspension is terrible; always has been for the 47 years I've owned it!
@@ChristopherLawfubb1234 Any man who's owned a car for 47 years and can still lope deserves respect. I'm familiar with transverse leaf springs but this is my introduction to quarter ellipticals.
Well maybe “ lope” was a bit of an exaggeration!;)
@@ChristopherLawfubb1234 Ha ha : )
Good luck. It will be a project of love
It already is a labor of love, Bill; I'm sweating my pitootie off trying to get that engine started. One thing it makes me very aware of...how little I know about these simple little machines. It's a steep learning curve that is for sure.
cant put a price on history but you sir certainly stole it for $100 !
It was a long drive on one of the hottest days of the year so far; but I'm having fun with it already!
id buy it for 100
I think I struck lucky on this one for sure.
Me for a few seconds thinking "I didn't know they made a 7-cylinder"
So funny; I do things like that all the time.
I apologize if this sounds shrill and silly but I’ve watched half a dozen of the how to’s on mounting the MGB hood and all of them miss the point of how to. Can’t see anything.
Yeah I feel your pain. It's difficult to film every detail of what is going on. Most of the time I am making decisions on the spur of the moment and its difficult to film every change of tactic. If I can help with specific questions I will try and do that. I eventually sold the MGB and although the hood was not perfect; at least it passed muster enough for the new buyer not to have a problem with it. I felt the same as you do; but I just ordered a reasonably priced version of the new hood, and jumped in. Let me know if I can help.
What guy's video are you referring to? I just bought my hood and it looks like a pain to install it.
Sorry but this was a while ago. There were a few RUclips videos of folks doing this. I’m sure you’ll find the other guys video with a simple search… probly much better than mine lol😊. I always figure it’s best to just give it a go … maybe even video putting yours on. Between us all maybe someone can learn from our mistakes! Thanks
Great video!
Thank you.
Use contact cement, it will stay if you follow the directions. DON'T use self tapping screws through the aluminum strip, use rivets as is originally done, otherwise it is hard to get the sealing rubber in correctly.
Thanks. Your sage advice will help others not make the mistakes I made for sure.
Would be helpful if the camera actually showed what he's doing at the rear of the car!
Your right. It's difficult to film every detail of what is going on. I eventually sold the MGB and although the hood was not perfect; at least it passed muster enough for the new buyer not to have a problem with it. None of the videos I looked at helped me with the details either; sorry mine's fell into this category too. Let me know if I can help with any advice.
That's no way to shoot a video, rotate the camera, you're not do a video call!
Thanks Tomasina. I’m a rookie at this.
Can’t believe you got that thing moving again! Awesome progress!
Thanks Jake, I’ll do a lil’ bit as time allows. It’ll be a miracle if this old thing runs; over 80 years old! Good grief!
❤😊 hi 👋
Aha...I just clicked on your link and subscribed...you might have told me it was you Kirsty! Great job with the RUclips...between you and James you guys have a real cottage industry going on. Good luck!
❤😊
Thanks for commenting.
❤sweet
Thanks; I like to show the videos of dismal failure too! I really thought I could use one of those temporary core plugs...but wrong again. Sorry for the late reply.
❤ love the music too
Dunno if I'm allowed music to be truthful; but I figured if I kept the volume really low; RUclips would not notice! LOL!
❤ love the MG
Thank you
Jeepers: James; I just realized that this was you. I hope your video's are still coming thick and fast. I love your stuff.
❤love it
Hi again James. I am terrible at keeping up with this stuff. To be truthful; I forgot that folks could comment on these videos. I'll learn it all eventually... well maybe not all...;)
Looks ace! Much better than white in my opinion
Thank you so much. Yes I love the look and it kinda matches the newer looking Rangey's now. But bad news 12 months later is; its starting to peel off in places. We have had some really extreme weather here in NJ over the past 12 months; so that's my excuse. I think it might be easy enough to patch it. I also constructed my own roof rack rails; so if I can get a basket to mount on the rails; then maybe I'll just do that; it'll disguise it a lil bit! LOL !
I suggest you install that roof in the sun !!!! I just bought a top for my 70. It is like the Mercedes cloth with no 1/4 windows cost me $ 1200 bucks !!! Had it shipped from England. So with shipping it was $ 1500. I say all this because I'm not taking any chance with it. It is going to a qualified upholsterer . Yours looks good !!
Wow. Yes I think you’re wise!
Where do you live I can help
Thanks very much for the offer; I know this is way too late for responding but I do appreciate your offer of help. I since sold the MGB. All good.
Do you want to sell ?
I appreciate your offer for this too. I did eventually sell the MGB; got a little bit more than I paid for it... but considering how much sweat equity I poured into the lil car; I did not really make any profit. But it was really a labor of love.
Thanks for posting this up, I'm pondering the same job but not sure whether I'll try or not ....
You should definitely try it. If I can do it then you can. I know mines is not perfect, but hey it’s much better than the old torn one that was on there. And it doesn’t look too bad!
Awesome! Great music in the background as well!
