Spraying DTM on the Interior - GTO RestoMod (Ep 67)
We finally get to spray something on the GTO Project! All the bare metal prep is done so it is time to spray Ruby's interior with DTM primer. I will attempt to spray every nook and cranny inside the fender wells, behind the dash and anywhere I can fit my hand to get the inside as sealed as possible to prevent future rust.

Well we finally finish up all the bare steel prep so we can move onto applying Epoxy and DTM sealer to the GTO. It feels like I have been doing this for months so it is nice to finally clear this hurdle. I will be using a Surface Conditioning Tool for the bare metal prep as well as a DA and Dura Gold pads. Getting the bare sheet metal properly prepared is very important so taking my time and ge...

      Hi James. Here is a link to a video I did explaining some of your questions: ruclips.net/video/ZSeMjtuS2fw/видео.htmlsi=1vgO2JMYopl7xbVb DTM stand for direct to metal but it seems it has turned into a marketing gimmick. Yes it can be sprayed over bare steel but there are way better products out there and those are epoxy based. Epoxy is impervious to moisture where as some of these so called DTM products are not as good at moisture resistance and can absorb moisture. In this case since I had the product, it was the interior being sprayed and I intend on sealing it all up with a solid topcoat I went ahead and used it. DTM's are good for sand throughs and small bare steel areas when you are doing repairs usually so that is why they say DTM. Watch my video on it and let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @FoothillPaintandFabrication
      @FoothillPaintandFabrication 6 дней назад

      Thanks. I am blessed living in a dry climate but most of it comes from when the car was stripped. Once it was dipped to remove the paint it was then dipped to remove any rust and also treat the bare steel. They dip it in phosphoric acid which inhibits the flash rusting somehow. You can buy phosphoric wipes which I have had a lot of luck with as well. Same process, though I believe your attention to detail exceeded mine! I’ll be forced to seam seal later because of the dampness up here. I think it’ll work out fine. Preventing surface rust took priority. Ruby will look so good. Thanks again for the videos. I always learn a ton.

      Thanks Robert. That conditioning tool works great doesn't it? The DA was just to make me feel better and did help get some spots nothing else would. I will be applying seam sealer after the epoxy and DTM even though many say you can apply them to bare steel. I will be using 3M Urethane seam sealer on most of the car. If I were you I would use urethane as well. The old school solvent based sealers just don't compare to the urethane ones. The urethane sealers cure in the presence of moisture so you are covered there 😁

      Vinegar does work but it also eats the base material where this solution stops when the rust is gone.

    Hey Mark, might not be as interesting as other videos, but it is what it is and it is appreciated. Found the methodology for getting ready for paint helpful- will have to pick up a couple of those cup style wire wheels. I have one small one, but when I get to the point of doing the nooks and crannies of my Camaro’s interior, the bigger version you used will come in handy. Is that a screw on mount for the rotary grinder/polisher? Just curious as to how many hours (days😊) you spent in prep work on the inside.

      Thanks Charlie, yes it is a 5/8"-11 thread standard arbor size for a sander/polisher. Google high speed wire wheels and you should find what you need. Make sure they are high speed or they will just end up spitting wires all over the place. Boy I am not sure hour many hours since I kept stopping to make another repair then back at it. If I had to guess I would say 10 hours on the inside total as there was stuff to deal with along the way. Straighten this, smooth out that or add this. I cleaned as I went as well trying to vacuum up as I went so when I rotated the car all that junk wouldn't slide down into some crack and not come out.

    Great video. I just ordered the ProFlo 4 for my ‘70 Chevelle SS 396 project. I already have a Tanks Inc. gas tank with an in tank fuel pump. Hopefully that will help me avoid some of the issues you ran into. Also, I’m replacing the factory 1/4” return line with a 3/8” line to match the feed line. I was wondering can you run the fuel lines to the back of the intake for a cleaner look.

      Hi Ryan and thanks. Yes you can easily swap the cross over line from the back to the front and put your pressure in and regulator out in the back. The Edelbrock regulator works well but may pose a space problem at the back of the fuel rail. A remote regulator would work just as well too. The larger return line is a good idea. I had a problem with a 67 Chevelle I installed this system on because the vibration dampener had shifted over all those years so the timing mark was way off so when I set the ignition timing to 12 degrees before top dead center it was very retarded badly. So bad that the exhaust manifolds ran cherry red at idle. Ended up cooking a brand new set of plug wires before I figured out what the problem was. If you are running your original dampener confirm the timing mark has not moved. Good luck on your build and let me know if you have any questions.

      @@FoothillPaintandFabrication thanks for the advice. The install doesn’t seem as daunting after your video. I still have a ways to go to get started on the install though. Got to get the frame painted and the body back on first

    I found the key to the rotisserie is to get the body centre of gravity aligned with the rotational axis of the rotisserie. Once it's balanced, rolls like a dream!!

    I built a rotisserie for my 73 Firebird last winter. Been using it this year. What a bonus it is. I've rolled my body over about a zillion times already and I'm not half finished my body work. A terrific plan, to use a rotisserie.

      @@roym.9875 I agree completely. I am getting a ton of use out of mine on the GTO build. It definitely is a great investment in quality on any build.

    The manufacturers of commercial similar mixtures had to choose a chelating agent. They want to be able to advertise safety of their product (and don't want payouts and litigation down the time line), so they didn't choose EDTA. I can see how EDTA might sound harmless. But i've used it to break DNA into tiny bits. Just something to consider when you choose whether to put gloves over your DNA based hands when working with this solution.

    So if you already had 60% of the parts, and you spent $500 on the rest, how can you say it only cost $500. Not everyone has all that stuff laying around.

      @@kevinrenville4030 Hi Kevin, at the end of the video I figured the cost including everything I had except the casters and it came in at about 700 bucks. Interesting enough that was about the cost to ship one to me so even at 700 we still came out pretty well.
