In today’s video, I’m diving into the important topic of pre-fader metering vs. post-fader metering. While I’m demonstrating this in LUNA, the concepts apply to any DAW you’re using!
Understanding what your DAW's meters are showing you is crucial for maintaining proper levels throughout your mix. It helps you avoid common pitfalls like accidental clipping, which can occur when you’re using the wrong type of metering without realizing it.
In this video, I’ll break down:

Are you using an apollo interface or are you subscribed natively for the ampex plugin?
I don’t currently use an Apollo interface. And the Ampex plug-in came with the Luna Pro Bundle which runs on my system natively.
Span isn't free. It's "free" for 30 days, then you have to buy the license!

Can you do one with a rap session for vocals using slate digital plug ins
Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I don't use any Slate plugins at the moment, but if I start using them, I'll be sure to make a vid.
i just use it with a reverb effect and i use it in the mastering the sounds sound so good clean and realistic
I think you have one of the best tutorial videos for LUNA, it is simple and to the point...Bravo.
Thank you very much!
Hi Alex, that was a really good insight about the tempo changing that I didn't know about, thanks for that. I'm not sure if you may remember but a few weeks ago I asked you about placing an incidental effect on a track on a certain part rather than all the way through and I would like to request that to be shown as I think a lot of Luna users may not aware of a way to do this. I'm doing fine with Luna by the way, ( on Windows ) my only gripe at this stage is Luna does not recognise and show some of my plugin's even though they are vst3 mainly Soundtoys and Kontackt to mention a couple. Have you experienced the like yourself? many thanks Phil.
Hi Phil, yes I remember. I'm glad to hear that Luna is working out well for you. I haven't experienced any issues with plugins not being recognized myself. It might be worth contacting their support to see if this is a known issue. And thanks for the suggestion, I'll make a vid on this in the coming weeks. Many thanks!
Thank you. That's very helpful and very clear. I was hoping you were going to explain how to make the click change to two per beat or perhaps three per beat. This would be useful if the music slowed down and a subdivided click was required. I don't even know if this is possible, and it looks to me like it isn't. A possible feature request for Luna? There have been a few very useful videos about adding a click track to a prerecorded bit of music with varying tempo, then making other tracks conform to it using "time" and "tempo" setting. Beat-mapping, I think it's called. You're very good at explaining, so it would always be helpful to have that all talked-through again, maybe even better than the previous tutorials.
Hey, thank you for your comment. I haven't noticed a way to do this with the click, but I will have a look into it and see if I can figure it out. I'll also definitely do a vid on beat/tempo mapping in the coming weeks. Thanks for your suggestions. 😊
@@mixinglessons Thanks. That would be great, another walk through of beat-mapping and everything related to that. I have another one for you, though.. Pre-fader or Post-fader? What's the difference? My Luna seems to be setup with Post-fader metering and I don't know why it would be that way around. Which is best and in what circumstances? If you can make that concept easier to understand it would be a great help. Thank you!
Hey, thanks once again. I'll definitely make a vid on pre/post-fader soon!
@@mixinglessons It would also be great if you could do a tutorial on different mastering methods. In particular I'd like to know why so many people make a mix of everything into stereo and then import that into a new session to master it. Are there disadvantages to doing everything all at once, given that computers are now so powerful that they can do this quite easily? Thanks!
Hey, thanks so much for the suggestion 😊 Mastering should definitely be done in a separate session from mixing, as it's more than just stereo bus processing. The goals in a mastering session are quite different from those in mixing. For instance, mastering can achieve balance and consistency across all the tracks on an album, in terms of levels, dynamics, frequency response, etc. To accomplish this, all the songs from an album need to be imported into a dedicated mastering session. I’ll definitely look into making a video on this topic in the coming weeks.
Hey alex .. some tpoics if you have done so already .. mastering in LUNA ,, with or without LUNA plugins , also how to get the best of the Reverb true plate plugin and the the galaxy tape echo inside of LUNA... just got into LUNA ..thanks in advance
Hey, I'll definitely do vids on both the Pure Plate Reverb and the Galaxy Tape Echo in the coming weeks. I'll look into putting something together on mastering as well. Thank you for your suggestions!
i would love to see a video on how track freez works.thank you. i’m a subscriber to your channel.
yeah that would be nice ..
Hey, thanks for subscribing. 😊 Great suggestion, I'll definitely do a vid on this soon.

I'm running an M1 Pro chip, not sure what the GPU is but it's surely good enough NOT to be getting graphics lagging, especially but not exclusively on all my third party plugins. Can anyone weigh in? Anyone experienced the same issue? It's borderline unbearable 😂
I've not experienced any issues like this. I'm running Luna on one of the previous generation of Macs that used Intel processors, and I haven't had any problems. Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions.
@@mixinglessons Thanks. I've reinstalled which helped - it's not happening as much / as bad but still there. I've put a support request through.
Straight, clear and to the point. Thank you for that. Trying to decide if I'd actually need these after purchasing UAD's Distressor?
Thank you very much. 🙂 Good question. The Distressor can do a great job of emulating an 1176. I have both, but the 1176 still tends to be my first choice for fast compression. This is largely down to its simplicity and how easy it is to dial in. I opt for the Distressor if I need greater control. So for me, perhaps it's more to do with workflow and familiarity with the 1176, because in terms of sound, the Distressor can absolutely get a similar result. Certainly, if I could only have access to one compressor, it would be the Distressor for its versatility.
Very well done, man, you deserve more views 🙂👍
Thank you ☺️
Great advice, thank you bro.
Thank you so much.
Easy to understand. Thanks.
Can you summing before you start the actual mix processing or is summing something you do after you’re done with the mix for final polishing?
You could do it either way, but I generally add the extensions early on and mix into them.
For mastering, certainly an EQ before the compressor has more benefits or you can add a sidechain HPF to this compressor . For mixing individual signals the analysis will depend as the author comments here : an acoustic guitar with bumps at 220-320 will certainly sound better in a busy mix if you EQ first, making the compressor work more relaxed as the next processing block.

Testing on Windows (in Core audio mode, I dont have Apollo etc). For me its great for analog color, nothing more. Did single bus for vox and put chorus and it already made bus with noticible latency). Have no clue how to fix it
Can you use other companies plug ins in Luna? Or just UA?…..I already have tons of UA plug ins anyways….just wondering.
Yes, you can use other plugins, you’re not just limited to UA 🙂
MUCHAS GRACIAS!!
That was a smart tip. Appreciate it!
I own them im not gonna pay more for an extension.. that's robbery
Thanks
Very well made video. I see a lot of similarities to Sonar.
Thank you very much!
Is that the MXL990?
Sure is
@@mixinglessons i will always love that mic, that was my first mic they dont make em how they use to
@@keeppushin yeah, I agree. I always recommend it to anyone looking for their first condenser 🙂
Finally an explanation I can actually understand, in less than 3 mins. Great video mate, I really appreciate it!
Thank you, glad it helped ☺️
Nice videos
I like you brother. Im a long time Luna user from the UK. You're clear, to the point, the right speed and very humble and personable. I've subscribed. Easy buddy!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it 🙂
Good stuff indeed, very clear and concise. Well done, I'm subscribing ✌🏻
Thank you very much!
Nice video I’m thinking of switching to Luna from Reason but switching seems really daunting
Yeah it’s daunting to switch DAWs, but I found Luna easy to get used to. You could start with the free trial to see if it’s for you. 🙂
The best LUNA video i've seen cheers
Thank you!
Can you do a video like this about this saturation?
I'll keep this in mind for a future vid 😊
Thank you 🎉
You are so good at explaining this stuff!!!! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thumbs up! Do you do 1 on 1 couching for vocal recording or mixing in Pro Tools?
Hey, thanks for your comment! I'm afraid I don't do one-on-one coaching at the moment, but I'll be making more videos about Pro Tools for the channel soon, and I'll aim to make something on vocal production too.
All songs need to be mastered by a professional to be properly release ready.
Great video, but Im having issues that I cant figure out. How do you configure it to record?? Ive watched tonnes of videos and I just cant seem to work it out. No doubt its some simple setting I havent set but its driving me crazy. One more thing, do you need a midi controler/edrums etc? can i record by clicking the mouse or keyboard?
Hey, thanks for your comment! You record just as you would when recording any other instrument in your DAW. So you record from the DAW, rather than from within the plugin itself. And yes, you can input your parts using your mouse rather than a MIDI controller or electric kit. I hope this helps!
