I WON THE GOLDEN SPURTLE at The World Porridge Making Championship 2024!!
I entered the World Porridge Making Championship for the third time and was lucky enough to win the coveted Golden Spurtle for the best traditional porridge.
The World Porridge Making Championship is an annual event held in Carrbridge, in the Highlands of Scotland, which has been running for 31 years.
There are two competitions held at the same time, Traditional & Speciality. The traditional competition allows only oats, water & salt and the speciality is a freeform oat-based dish. Both must be cooked in 30 minutes on a gas camping stove.
There are 5 heats, featuring 30 competitors from 14 countries and then a grand final featuring the top 6 porridge makers in the world.

What is the best fuel for a Trangia stove? Gas, Meths or Bioethanol?
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 месяца назад
Trangia camping stoves can burn many different types of fuel so I decided to run an experiment to work out which fuel was the most efficient, quickest and cheapest. I boiled 500ml of water using gas, meths, bioethanol liquid and bioethanol gel to see what differences there are between the fuels. I measured and weighed the fuel at the start and the end and timed how long it took for the water to...

Mordekai XD regular show
that bridge is beautiful, nice vids chris!
It is, the Old Packhorse Bridge has been there since 1717. Last year, when I visited in heavy rain, the river was almost flowing over the top of it!
belter chris, this aged well!!
I use a different recipe for the competition. I've been trying to film it up the top of Bennachie but I'm struggling with weather and getting there due to logging activity!
what a cute bluetit !
this looks excellent
yum!
Awesome Chris, I enjoyed that!
Absolutely awesome. Congratulations chief
Thank you. It's a fun day out in a lovely place.
Where the hell are you buying Gas at £19.19 per can? - Same Brand & Size of Gas is £6.00 in Halfords which makes the usage cost £0.12 and therefore by far the cheapest of the 4
I got the current prices from Amazon. They were £26.99 in my local camping shop! The £6 one in Halfords isn't quite the same, it's not the Performance version, which, I believe, is better in cold weather. Price doesn't really matter much, you can bulk buy all the fuels anyway.
@@CampCookExplore The £6.00 one in Halfords is the performance gas identical to what you used - I purchased 2 Last month - (it's ust that Halfords are still using an old photo on their website) and that price is for individual cans. It's been the same price for the last 12 months, hense my comments that this makes it far cheaper than the altenatives. Suggest you get yourself down to Halfords & stock up as it's obviously far cheaper than what you have been paying.
@@waveydavey5541 Cool, that's a good tip. I prefer the quietness of the spirit burner but the gas option is handy for some things.
Good job Chris. Please come to Alaska to be our celebrity judge for the Midnight Sun Spurtle contest. Last weekend in June.
What a legend
Winning porridge championships, camping under the stars, lots of birds in the backyard, you sir are living the dream!
I wild camped around loch ness for 2 years living in a hot tent using a stove to keep warm and cook my catch. Was amazing. I'm thinking about doing it full time if standards of living keep dropping. I'm tired of dancing to the tune of the hierarchy. Great video. Just subscribed 👍🏻
I love hot tenting. 2 years non-stop is tough going but I guess you must adapt. 11 nights is my longest spell camping. Ideally I'd love a little plot of woodland so I can build a small cabin using the Scottish Hutting Regulations. You can't live there full-time but it would be nice.
@@CampCookExplore I just kept moving around the loch so I wasn't in the same spot. Absolutely beautiful area as you know.. My biggest challenge was adapting to having no technology and keeping busy so boredom never broke me.
I tend to find camping to be pretty busy anyway, simple things like making a coffee on a Trangia stove can take 20 minutes. I'd maybe start whittling sticks or fishing to fill the time. I do a lot of photography when I'm out too, so that fills a few hours.
Why everything is so expensive? Eg. in Poland everything is 5x cheaper.
It's just higher taxation and general cost of living. It's got much more expensive here in the last few years.
My favourite place in the world. Can’t bloody beat it.
Mine too. I used to live nearby and never get bored of visiting.
Great test for us trangia users !!! I get my bio ethanol from B&Q , £8 for 2 litres , hope this helps . atb
Great video. What fuel produced the least and most soot?
Couldn't work out how to test this but it did cross my mind. I do add a little bit of water to my meths to avoid this but it's not something I tend to worry about.
What a great comparison and calculation!
Thanks! Just filling an afternoon. It was interesting to do though.
Is there a reason why I get a bold purple colour around the outside that bleeds into the craters when making a mineral moon? Was told it was abberation but you don't have the same issue even though we're using the exact same lenses
That sounds like Chromatic Aberration. I use Lightroom to edit photos and there's an option in there to remove this. It's sometimes called colour fringing too. Typically green or purple interference where a dark colour meets a light colour. Are you using a single photo or did you stack frames from a video?
@@CampCookExplore It actually seems a lot worse when I edit a stacked photo . I tried edititng a single frame and it's no where near as prominent .
@@Callum71969 What software are you using to edit the photo? You might need to go through every image in the stack, it could just be one of them throwing it or they might all need edited individually. Bit of a pain in the neck, unfortunately.
@@CampCookExplore I actually just completed a stack using photoshop rather than registax or autostakkert and the results are miles better when I add color . I stacked my raw CR2 files rather than having to convert to tifs first to be made compatible with PIPP. I corrected all of my images first through Lightrom Classic which helped
@@Callum71969 Cool. I'll have to look into stacking with Photoshop.
Щегол - красавчик ❤

Enjoyed that , new sub here 👍🏕
Thanks. I've done likewise, your videos look great!
@@CampCookExplore much appreciated 👍🏕
were the stars filmed with the dwarf 2?
Not the aurora, the Dwarf 2 can't do that. I photographed Andromeda with it, as best I could as the aurora was interfering with the tracking.
Great video !! What camera are you using here ?? Is it the Dwarf 2 ?
I was using a Canon 90D with a Sigma 150-600mm lens for the one, I went back a couple of days later with the Dwarf 2 and filmed this ruclips.net/video/8iHEXg3ukXc/видео.html. The Dwarf doesn't quite have the reach of the Sigma but it's more stable footage.
What is the music/ sound, its mega!
It's just one of the RUclips backing tracks, called Meeting Again by Emily A. Sprague. It works well with the sound of the water.
Thank you i haven't been to Scotland this year and i so want to go ❤
You are welcome. We'll still be here when you get a chance!
you eat better meals camping than i eat at home 🤣
Haha. This one felt like cheating, by using ready-made ingredients.
Ohhh wow! 😮 This looks beautiful 😍 I was in Scotland only last week. Its my favourite place in the world ❤ i must visit this campsite! Thank you for your wonderful videos 😊 L xxxxx
Glencoe is a fantastic place, even more so when it's not raining.
Ohhh 😮❤fantastic ❤😊👍🖐
Your video just picked me up from a dark place. This just makes me smile from ear to ear. You’re a brave man! Live your best life, cheers!
Thanks for watching. Dark places are only temporary, I've been there. I entered again last year and made the final 6, I'm going again next month too and I'll film it. It's a very enjoyable event.
Hope you are doing okay, pal. Not only did I return to the World Championship in 2024, I WON IT! ! ruclips.net/video/6kgKNDegtBw/видео.html
I am in love in my Beautiful Bennachie ❤️❤️❤️ great run Training for any ultra runs
Hi Natalya, I am a visitor of Bennachie a couple of times a week but I never see you there. In fact haven't seen you around for years now. What you up to these days? I go there to help with stamina for taekwondo training. To Camp, Cook, Explore. Superb video with camera angles I haven't seen before. I have subscribed. Keep the videos coming
Love the way you put this together! They look like rockhopper penguins I the middle stages! 😂
They do! Little grumpy faces with mad hair!
Nice! Like sparrows ❤❤
I was having the same problems setting this up. Thank you for your video! Once I did it correctly, the cot was comfortable, as you said.
Glad to have helped. I'd seen a video from One Tigris affiliate and copied the setup they did, which was the wrong way. I nearly sent mine back after a night sagging on the ground.
Damn i should not watch these. Getting hungry. Great video. Subbed.
Oh man, that view is seriously awesome! And hey, have you tried the auto-capture feature? It's great for catching all the bird action.
I tried it in the garden last week and it works well. I made most of this video (ruclips.net/video/xyVHaGq3d8o/видео.html) with the Dwarf 2 and I tried auto-capture there, it didn't know who to track and just got lots of blurry sea!
They look like serios hunters. A beautiful video and a fabulous view.
They like to fish. They hit the water at over 70 miles per hour and then swim around until they catch something.
Great!!
Thank you!!! Hero!!!
Thanks, this is a good idea!
It is! Quick, easy and tastes great!
Ψυχουλες❤
This is excellent. I love planets. Have you ever imaged Saturn?
I've not imaged it but I have looked at it. I'll try to photograph it this autumn. I've now got a Celestron Nexstar 6SE telescope and it's brilliant for looking at planets.
@@CampCookExplore Looking forward to it. Thank you.
Great video
It was fun to make. They have much more character than most birds. 5 hours flew by!
🇲🇽🙃
Imagine finding this house. Talk about landing on your feet!
Beautiful
I believe in magic.
What is it doing at 6:04? Checking if the nest is sturdy?
They tap the walls with their beaks to check if it's sturdy and measure it out by flapping around. They need the space to flap to make the nest the right shape. It looks really weird!
Didn't know the bit about using their wings to measure. That is so awesome.
It is called 'scraping' and seems to be done inside tree hollows as well, seen Kestrels and Barn Owls do it as well. Not sure of the purpose but is usually a sign that they do want to nest in that location. Someone out there probably knows if ya can't find out through google.
You selling it?
I thought the spurtle had to go clockwise and stirring anticlockwise summoned the devil? It looks absolutely amazing there.
I've read either direction summons him, I probably got it wrong in the video. I'm not entirely convinced it matters. Oldshoremore Beach is a stunning place, I love it there.
