    Many thanks for your story. I believe the key for anyone here is to do your homework on all the common scams before you even board a plane. I foolishly got sucked in by the gem scam in Bangkok back in 2013. They are very good at what they do as I see myself as a pretty savvy traveller. However I was thrown off guard when I was initially approached by a policeman before I suddenly found myself in a tuk tuk and being taken to nondescript temples and told stories along the way of a special King's initiated public holiday with free tuk tuks and cheap gems for tourists etc. I fell for it hook, line and sinker and wound up spending $2K on a blue sapphire worth about $200 and what's worse is I didn't even want it. But along the journey, in the gem store, I told the store attendant that I was buying the gem for my fiancée for a ring. I didn't have a fiancée and this was to give myself an out. Then when I got out of the store I asked the tuk tuk driver to take me to my hotel. He wasn't interested anymore and just drove off. I then had a sinking gut feeling that something wasn't right. I found my way back to the hotel and then went to an internet cafe to get online and search for what had just happened. And there it was 'The Bangkok Gem Scam' outlining almost exactly what I had experienced earlier. What a fool! The next day I went back to the gem store and said that I had spoken to my fiancée and she wants a diamond and choose it herself, and that she is back home in Australia so I need a refund. They processed the refund back to my card which ended up costing me about $180 for the banks in exchange rate variations. Better than $2K but still a valuable lesson to learn. The initial policeman was just someone that is part of the scam, wearing a t-shirt with police written on it, to put some validity to it. I was completely duped but at least the only winners were the banks, bless their cotton socks.

    Wow, this video is packed with lots of good info. It sounds like the tea houses and EBC villages operate on a cash only (Nepali currency) basis? Are there no ATMs beyond Kathmandu or maybe Lukla?

    • @LostKnox
      @LostKnox 3 месяца назад

      Yes cash is king up there. You can find cash machines past Lukla in bigger towns like Lukla, Namche and Deboche but they do not always work. They often run out of money or lose Internet signal if it is cloudy. The machines past Lukla also let you withdraw less cash, so you end up paying ATM fees more often which can become quite expensive I believe some tea houses accept USD also but I would stick with Rupees to be safe 😊

    My first visit to Thailand was 24 years ago. They tried the tuk tuk scam on me. I knew it is dodgy when the guy said 20 Baht for the tour. So I went with him to 2-3 shops and got bored I told him I have enough, I did catch a taxi and left him. I was not rude or aggressive (not recommended in Thailand anyway) but firm. Of course I could not or can not dodge things like double pricing but I try my best. At least I steal something from Thailand, my caring, beautiful wife (married for 20 years).

    90 % of Tuk Tuk drivers are scammers...10% of them assistant scammers.

      We went back to Bangkok 1 month ago and they tried the same scam on again. We actually had tuktuks refuse to take us on a trip because they were waiting for people coming out of the temples.

      The reason the Tuk Tuk drivers bring tourists to shops,boutiques,etc,even though they,the tourists never intent to is because they will get fuel coupons from those places....

    My son and I have done the Golden Triangle, so this year we’re hitting Takayama! My question is, how credit card (Suica/Master Card) friendly is Takayama compared to the Golden Triangle? We obviously will carry Yen, but want to use it wisely and save it for street vendors and the like! Good job on your vlog avoiding “cheekyness”!

      Alot of places still only accepted cash. I think a fair few of the bigger establishments accepted card though. We hope you have an amazing time in Takayama. It is a beautiful little old town 😁

    한국 음식 = 맵고 짜고 달다 특히 설탕을 안넣는 음식이 없어서 음식이 달고 건강에도 매우 안좋다 . 한국문화= 사실상 문화가 없다 그냥 전쟁 후 급격히 발전한 나라일뿐 볼거도 없고 놀거도 없는 나라 . 외국인들 드라마나 영화 kpop때문에 환상가지고 오지만 대부분 실망하고 떠남
