🖍 The Parent's Guide to Elementary School
Hi, I'm Natalie, former elementary school teacher and founder of the RUclips Channel Primary Focus. Primary Focus teaches parents everything teachers wish they knew, from how to thrive in the classroom to how to keep learning at home.
Part of my reason for leaving teaching was the disconnect between parents and teachers, so I created Primary Focus to educate and prepare parents to work with their children's teachers at all stages of learning, not just when there is an issue. Parents and teachers working together is key to any child's success, and Primary Focus gives parents all the tools they need to make that happen.

Free speech is NOT a free for all.
Generally speaking the way freedom in the United States is interpreted is that you are free so long as your actions don’t impede on other people’s freedom. These books aren’t encroaching on other people’s freedom by existing and being stocked in libraries…but removing them does
@@PrimaryFocus yes that is partially right. It also means that the government cannot through you in prision for speech. However, freedom of speech does not extend to the speech limits an employer can impose. So as your video implies, this is not an example of the freedom of speech rights as much as a differing of opinions on what is appropriate in the schools. That’s all it is. It is not trying to suppress anyone’s freedom of speech.
@@rebeccachambers419 this isn’t an employer running a private business, it’s the government (local school districts/boards) putting policies on the record that specific books are banned from public schools. As far as I see it, the government is banning books
@@PrimaryFocus Right. But in this case, the community is also the employer of a public school. It is a partnership. And the community has a free speech right to express their opinions too. This is not an example of a constitutional war of rights. This is a differing of opinions only. Now, I see nothing wrong with these books either, especially Charlotte’s Web. However the poor school district is tasked with the burden of balancing what differing opinions are in a community. Nobody is wrong here. Some books should be banned from schools depending on the developmental level of the child. But to limit what kind of material is in a school is not an assault on anybody’s constitutional rights. We cannot limit the communities voice either. They have a constitutional right to make their opinions known. All this is is a battle of opinions. Not a constitutional war.
teachers would love that stuff
Great! Now I know WHAT to get my teacher!
Lol I love the coupon code
😅 idk about this one
They are removing pornographic books from school libraries. Good to hear.
If kids get to know the titles of banned books, they could be courious enough to wanna know what's in them. We can not, under no circumstances, allow them to get to know the world we soo desperatly try to keep from them.
😂 I like how there's a list of books that are "banned" but really its just a list of books a bunch of moms compiled together because the subject matter hurts their feelings.
how can people using fascist tactics have anything relating to "freedom" and "liberty" in their name
Ban em all. No more books.
Moms against liberty
“This book challenges our authority” Babe have your heard about a country called America
You can't have your cake and eat it too
It’s obvious why such a book would be banned. The real reason books are banned in these places is because they expose kids to information or ideas that are inconvenient to the people who benefit from keeping kids ignorant. Exposing kids to the concept of “banning books” is inconvenient to the people who benefit from keeping kids ignorant.
that’s why i plan on ordering and keeping all of my favorite books, that will probably be banned. 1984 being one of them.
Weirdly, the people who ban books tend to love 1984. The cognitive dissonance is wild.
@@neilemminger8628They must really love big brother, so much so that they started to act like „him“
Banning a book and restricting access to it are not the same thing. I'm not agreeing that the restrictions are appropriate. I'm simply pointing out that the hyperbole here doesn't help the case with a lot of the public.
If it is banned from school and public libraries- it is banned. That is not “restricted access” - that is banned. And you wanting to play a game of semantics about it doesn’t play well.
@@jasmadams I think you're splitting hairs.
@@CaGirl93003no, just school libraries. There has been no government action taken towards public libraries, just ngos and individuals saying some books should be removed. Those people have a right to say what they want, even if they’re saying something stupid. The Florida bill allowed parents to object to books in school libraries if they found them inappropriate. There is a major difference that you’re correlating.
@@chillchinna4164 that is absolutely false. For starters, public school libraries ARE public libraries in that they are tax payer funded. Further, community public libraries have also had books banned in FL and Alabama. If YOU don’t want YOUR child to read something, that is your prerogative, however making a broad rule to remove or restrict books for all children, MY children, is not your prerogative. And claiming a book can be purchased is not an argument, for starters creating a pay wall for access to books in public spaces is not okay. Lastly, the issue is allowing a single parent or even a small group of parents be the arbiters of “morality” and given the right to infringe on the 1st amendment rights of everyone they don’t agree with is the actual argument. So I’m not going to play a semantics game with you. If my kid wants to read an age appropriate book about a gay kid, or the perspective a of black kid, or that some families have 2 moms or 2 dads - the ironically named “moms for liberty” assholes don’t get to decide they can’t, just like I don’t get to decide what their kids read.
@@CaGirl93003 That's not what being banned is though. There are tons of books that kids shouldn't be allowed to access in school.
idk about y'all but i was always reading banned books as a kid
"moms for liberty" as long as that liberty does not include the liberty to read the books you want!
They had their liberty stolen by their husbands and community (read Christian cult) so now they want the same for everyone else
More like "B's" for Tyranny.😂
There is no book banning in ba sing se
I hate to tell you Christian Dolphin lovers, but Dolphin males form male/male relationships even when there are plenty of females around.
Banning books is one the first steps that every government does before stepping into dictatorship.
"The theme of the book challenges our authority". So they banned it. Sounds like some unfunny parody of an authoritarian dictatorship.
Or abusive parents.
Warm! Or at least, blue skies! I need that vitamin D! ❤
No books are being banned.
They're being removed and banning books from schools

Yeah man no books are being banned, especially if you ignore all the books that have been banned
Someones been out of school for too long and doesn’t know what’s happening to school books!?!
I really liked this video I hope your message gets more views
The irony of a group called “Moms for LIBERTY” banning media because it “challenges their authority” is both hilarious and terrifying

☀️ Definitely team winter. You can put on more clothes if you get cold, but what can you do if you're hot? Peel your skin? I don't think so
I used to be team 🥵 but lately I’m missing the 🥶
Great video! It’s scary to think that parents would rather pull books off the shelf for everyone, instead of sitting down with their kids and discussing what they would like them to pick out and bring home. Teachable moments are part of raising kids and on those rare occasions they might bring home a book with differing views it seems parents are ill equipped to talk with their kids! I want a library for kids that looks like the world all around them, not just a narrow segment of their community.
Male penguins always raise the young that’s just nature. The female lays the egg, transfers it to the male’s feet under the brood patch and then heads out to sea to hunt for food. Dad doesn’t get to eat during the incubation period, which is about 68 days. Once the chick has hatched, mom comes back and takes the chick while dad finally gets to go hunting for food. At this stage, they share parenting duties until the chick is big enough to be taught how to hunt for it’s own food. If two bachelor penguins found an egg, they would probably do the same thing as a male/female pair. Personally, I don’t have a problem with kids learning that sometimes, doing the right thing can be controversial but the point is that the chick who had no parents, was adopted and had a good life. Where’s the controversy? Somebody point it out to me because I’m just not seeing it. 🙄
Just a quick note that the number of people working to ban books is small. It's a few people looking for opportunities for little to no resistance.
No book is safe from such nitpicking - there might be a future where very few books are left on the library shelves. I can't believe people put so much energy in removing perfectly innocent and cute books so that children OTHER THAN THEIR OWN can't read them. So much energy that could be useful somewhere else.
Parents have the right to say what books their kids can read.
Yes, but they don't have the right to say what other's allow their children to read
@@rebeccarogers15 That's what you're doing if you put it in the school.
What was the justification for banning this?
How about a band no David that books my childhood
I enjoy learning what books I would like to read and/or introduce to my children. Luckily, we’ve read several of these! 😮
I used to read this Lal the time in my old school, I specifically remember the part with the baseball bat and the part where he wouldn't take a bath
You could’ve just told us here
