I used to buy books I wanted my son to read, but I noticed he gets more excited reading when he picks what book he wants to read. He even gets excited asking me if we can get the next books in his book series and loves to read for fun. Definitely better when my son chooses the types of book he likes instead of me choosing books for him.

Totally agree that making the home a "reading" home is so important to naturally grow a "reading" kids. One way i did is to wrap my ebook with a real book while my 1 year old son was flipping his pages next to me. He was not that smart to realize what's happening but I believe he feels comfortable for the family members to do reading with him beside.

Maybe your kid hates reading cuz he knows he is going to have to read god awful books like scarlet letter when he gets to high school.
