Rem Thompson's Maker Shed
США
Добавлен 10 май 2014
My name is Rem Thompson and I love to make things. Since I was a kid, my grandpa taught be the spirit of DIY and how to build, break, and make all around the house. As I grew up I developed my own passion for technology. Naturally my love of technology, and the maker spirit I learned from my grandpa were on a collision course, and I fell MADLY in love wit the world of 3D printing, laser cutting, cnc machines, as well as other traditional manufacturing practices. My mission is to share the love of making things on your own with the world!
What Is Bambu Up To?!
Bambu Lab just dropped a HUGE firmware update and it's causing a stir! This January release is all about security, with Bambu Lab removing 3rd party access to their machines. This has big implications for users of Orca Slicer and other open-source software. 🤔
But that's not all! Bambu Lab also introduced a new software called Bambu Connect. Is this their answer to the community's concerns about open-source compatibility?
In this video, we break down the changes, discuss the reasons behind Bambu Lab's decision, and explore what options are available to you, including using Bambu Connect. We'll also take a look at some popular Bambu Lab alternatives, like the Anycubic Kobra S1 and the Prusa C...

5 Must Buy Tools for 3D Printing Lowes Edition
Are they just trying to monitor what we're making?
How long have you been writing G-code? From start to finish.
This question is for Rem.
Zero. I have never done that. That’s what slicers are for lol
Part of me misses the tinkering, so I might build my own printer to suit my specific needs. But what Bambu is doing is making it more as an appliance by putting such a closed eco system. For that it’s good, but I’m with you that it does irks the likes of us. So maybe for some of us, Bambu close system might not be for us, but in a way it makes 3D printing safer and more approachable to have a 3D printer sitting next to a paper printer.
I create and design. I use stock as much as possible so the people using my design because I have to make sure it meets baseline quality. Same prior printers as painful as it was in the past using stock.
At the moment I am taking a wait and see approach for a couple of reasons: 1. I have not yet purchased my first 3D printer. I was going to get a Bambu Lab A1 Combo and I’m still considering it 2. It is very early days yet, and I want to see how things work out with OrcaSlicer et al by the time these changes go GA. 3. The A1 series is likely to be the last to get the firmware updates by which time a lot of the bumps will be worked out. Also, since the A! and P1 series of printers have much less powerful main boards, it may take longer to prepare the Security Update for those systems
It's a communist country they are up to no good. Especially now that we have President Trump who is not on their payroll as the clown we had prior.
I wonder if it will turn into the way Glowforge lasers operate. If you are not connected to the internet and their servers you can't print. They are slow depending on the traffic on their servers since that is where the instructions come from. They might even run the file through an analyzer to determine if it is flagged for further review. Print something that looks like a weapon it gets reported.
I also preordered the Kobra S1. It should be here on Thursday! It’s my first one 😊
Awesome! I hope you have a great time with it!
Can someone mention one company that closed their ecosystem that the latter doesn't cost more for consumers?
Dont know what they did but they did something and now my system is slow AF
Ownership: noun ̶ ̶th̶e̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶o̶r̶ ̶f̶a̶c̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶b̶e̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶o̶w̶n̶e̶r̶.̶ ̶ ̶ ̶ ̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶a̶l̶ ̶r̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶p̶o̶s̶s̶e̶s̶s̶i̶o̶n̶;̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶p̶r̶i̶e̶t̶o̶r̶s̶h̶i̶p̶. Syke we changed the terms of service (Kind of shitty bambu!)
Your whole statement about using a memory card that “is like the stone ages” it’s just pathetic and lazy.
Orca Slicer is a fork of Bambu Studio, which is a fork of PrusaSlicer, which is a fork of Slic3r!, So bambu studio is fine for what I need. I think security is welcome, specially for printing farms where lots of things can go wrong if is hacked by bad people.
gave you the benifit of the doubt, waited and waited as the vid went on. HOPING you would "get" why people are pissed. Bro, no one gives a shit about this fake security nonsense. You can count on 1 finger how many times someone remotelly hacked into some random dudes printer. Bambu got caught selling people a product with a specific agreement, specific term of service, and product offering. Then RETROACTIVELLY attempted to alter the terms of the agreement like lord fking vader. But heres the kicker, we have archives and wayback proof of it. This on its own wouldnt have been that bad of a thing, but then bambu had the BALLS to write a communist gaslighting BS hitpiece saying all the community members are spreading "misinformation" and their concerns were unfounded, and get this OUTRIGHT LIED saying they never altered the archives they got caught deleting. You wanna know what this ACTUALLY is? its about control. 2 reasons. They want a monopoly, apple style, on all their proprietary BS for money obviously. But the other, is so they can monitor, record, tattle tale to gov agencies, and even INTERVENE with your prints to prevent certain objects from being printed.... cough cough luiggi cough. So not only is bambu taking an item I already bought, and then stripping away its ability to do the things I BOUGHT IT FOR, they are then telling me im stupid and paranoid for having noticed that they lied, are blaming the community for it and are telling us all to stop believing our lying eyes while we literally look at the archived data. I then voiced my concern on the bambu forum and the CCP little pinks IMMEDIATELLY banned me for being "too combative" even though before the ban, I could see that 99% of replies to my comment were in agreeance from the community. They are cooked. This kind of behavior is not exclusive to this community, it occurs in gaming as well. When a woke studio makes a garbage DEI infested trashpile, then it inevitably fails, the studio then lashes out at the gaming community blaming its customers and being aggressive or gaslighting. Which in turn makes the situation 10x worse. Bambu is now going to be at the mercy of a streisand effect "of sorts" as their attempts to censor people like me, attempts to lie too and gaslight their own community, will now make the issue exponentially bigger than it would have been otherwise.
REM encourage everyone to use Bamboo's company contact email and write up their thoughts. Fastest way to stop this is to get as many people as possible to complain publicly and to their contact email.
nice vid
I never thought I'd be considering Creality printers again...
My understanding is that Orca has been told “no”, they will not be getting access, that they will need to wash it through BambuConnect. And I do not believe that Bambu is not harvesting models via gcode of models not in their repository. If you are doing NDA work you would be violating your agreement if you submit the print job via the Bambu cloud.
Yet another 'Bambu Lab' is protecting us believer. You have to ask, if the security issue is this bad why isn't there countless examples of hacks? It is because getting into the 'LOCAL' network is not worth the effort, there is no money to be made. Bambu Studio provides Bambu Lab the access it needs to completely control the printer, check it out, firmware and macro updates without your knowing about it. Because there are so many users that do not understand TCP/IP Bambu Lab is 'Gas Lighting' security to gain complete control and you are supporting this farce. The future of 3D printing doesn't have to look like the printer market, all manufactures going to subscription models of ownership, filament costs way more than ink/toner or paper.
Bambo just lost $4500 sale. Any vendor that restricts usage of 3rd party tools or try to force subscription services, will quickly died off as 3D and Lasers are founded on open source. It ok to charge for app, even yearly updates, but restricting use etc users will find other vendors to replace Bambo. I was ready to buy, now I will not touch them.
Bamboo is the bad actor, the phone call is coming from inside the house.
Don't need high-grade security for a device that does not "require" a internet connection, and NO a 3D printer does absolutely NOT need an internet connection... As long as its LAN only there is nothing more needed for security than a simple device password... The problem is that when its not needed to be "connected" its opening the door for someone to walk into my secure network, the fact that BL's printers are NOT secure but they require an always-online connection to BL's servers makes it so that if I wanted my printer to be connected it will require its own firewalled VLAN to do to so because at this moment the printer is like a giant trojan horse and would even make my secure IOT network unsecure because a hacker will just remotely access my printer via BL's servers, it's a complete joke.. That's why my printer has been offline (LAN only) from day 1 in a firewalled VLAN. I don't get it, why does everything these day's need to be cloud-based these days even though the hardware is fully LAN capable.. You're printer should not even be running at all if you are not at home (semi-close proximity to the device) and if you require remote monitoring because your printer is in a remote location (like a shed or garage on your property) local-LAN will do just fine, there is absolutely NO need for internet (if you have WAN in your shed/garage you also have LAN). And EVEN IFFFFF you realllllllyyyyyyy wanted to access everything remotely you should up-your-game and create VPN tunnels with a remote site and access your hardware that way, still no need to connect to some cloud-based-services ran on servers that you do not control and have no say in what is allowed and what not..
Our security, protecting our systems is just a cover story, the real goal is route all the print jobs through China (CCP) so they have unfettered access to all the design and intellectual property. Whatever you design is being forced to get deposited on servers located in China, are you comfortable with that?
Who needs the "Apple for 3D printing"? I stay with the "Debian Linux for 3D printing" and keep using my PRUSA
no security updates works be needed at all if Bambu doesn't need you to connect the device to the Internet! lan only is all anyone should need! Bambu is the cause
this is an attempt of putting us on a subscription model. no way I'm updating my firmware !!
Panda touch is a third party exploit or aka hack in their mind they want your data.
Why do they need to see your print jobs?😅
To gather data to train their upcoming AI...
Remember, all this bs is for turning bambu printers in subscription printing. No any reasons.
Bambu us great Im a designer I got not time pissing about I cad then print I make make make It piss about doodling like a tool making silly toys and modding Go elsewhere
I think you missed the point. This update requires you to use Bambu Connect to connect to their server. If you use Bambu Studio, it is built in. If you use a 3rd party slicer, you have to use Bambu Connect, which is Bambu Studio without the slicer. Octoprint will not work once you have done the firmware update.
If normal printers can send files directly over Bluetooth or wifi hotspot, wht cant bambu sell a kit for it or better yet a lan connection so we could just connect it to a switch and isolate. Hoping there isnt something too bad happening about the ecosystem in the nearest future
Just to pipe up here as a software engineer. It is absolutely possible to "secure" your 3d printer from bad actors while still allowing the user to explicitly select which software can access it. Bamboos assumption is all non bamboo software is a bad actor.
You've missed quite a lot in this video. Bambu's new security "keys" have been cracked in a couple of hours after release, so secure right? Beyond that, Bambu SAID they were working with Soft Fever. Soft Fever updated and said they absolutely are not working with Bambu as bambu told them they will absolutely not give them access to the new system and put the burden 100% on Soft Fever to get Orca working. Bambu also may not allow you to keep your old firmware, they changed their terms of service to say that they can force security updates and that they can block all print jobs to your machine if you choose not to update (being offline). You also didn't address that peoples air gapped machines will now be REQUIRED to go online, and for a lot of print farm businesses this may actually be illegal (ITAR manufacturing, International Traffic in Arms Regulations). There is NO part of this update that is beneficial to the end user. None. Forcing people into a cloud connection is the OPPOSITE of secure. People seem to be forgetting that time that Bambu's "Secure" servers caused peoples printers to activate in the middle of the night and smash themselves into pieces, heat the beds and hotends etc.
If the machines are already "air gapped", they won't update. These machines will continue to run as they do now, until a mainboard is required. The rest, I agree.
Security ? from what? Some hacker prints me something on my printer by the morning?
exactly hahaha. wait until they start a subscription based software lol
I'm going to hack your printer and print you a nice kitty cat when you wake up.
There are a few really big concerns with this update: First... we are going to relay on Bambu, hoping they will not go to a subscription model, hoping they maintain their servers good enough for us to print every time we want to, and, hoping that they are not going to be the victim of a data breach. In LAN mode, I, the owner of the printer, am the one who is the boss, and selects what my printer does. In the future, even in LAN mode, Bambu is the boss, and can decide not to accept my print job. Second... How about politics? Bambu is a Chinese company and if Europe, or America, are going to put sanctions on China, it can well be that political rules can brick my printers. This is not something I can relay on, using my printers for my shop, so they force me to quit working with the Bambu machines, and change my workflow to start working with other brands.
This is what matters most to me - I am a big believer in the principles of right to repair/right to improve. This new policy is counter to that. My month-old Bamboozle printer is for sale for $100 less than I paid for it. I don't need another paywall/gate keeper in my world.
Control
I think they should focus on 4 use cases. Hobbyist - No cloud functionality at all, all LAN based connectivity, just plug in IP address of printer and use QR code/authentication code, to import security into BL Studio, etc ... this would be default mode. Hobbyist - Cloud, for those who really need (as a hobbyist) to check a video stream of the print or start a print whilst 5000 miles away from home. Business - Cloud, full SaaS solution covering printer activity, health, pro-active maintenance and automated parts ordering if needed/wanted, and logging, view of print farms, etc. Business - Self hosted for those businesses who's policy does not allow for business IP leaving the corporate network (which, really, should be all businesses but.. that's a choice). The last two can be monetised by Bambu Labs. First two Bambu's revenue should be more based on consumables, i.e. filament and convenience of using BL filament within their AMS system. One thing though is none of the models should really rely on servers in China to send print jobs, there are intellectual property considerations, geo-politics (for example, either the US/EU or China may not even exist in 5 years time, things have the potential to get catastrophically bad as things stand right now, sure this is a worst case scenario and hopefully unlikely ... hopefully, and if it did end up going down that way who would care about 3d printing ..... ). There should be options for servers run in European/US regions by local BL subsidiaries that are firewalled from their Chinese parent company. Note this would work the other way around, would a Chinese firm working on Chinese Govt contracts really want their prototypes sent over to a European or US server before it goes to their printer?
They changed what we bought after we bought it. There is certainly another way to make it secure, this is an excuse. This is absolutely a slippery slope.
so far nothing yet...still printing cloud base. blame on us govt for all their bs. bambu want to make sure this is not another tik tok .
BAMBOO = SUBSCRIPTION eventually
@BambuLab They will not get anymore money from me
I would like a true LAN Only mode (which will no longer be possible). My LANs security is my responsibility, NOT Bambu Labs responsibility. Losing control of my own devices is not a comfortable or wanted workflow. It's fine for Bambu to add functionality but to when they remove it without options then I start to question my purchases.
Uh, I believe I have that option with Prusa (send gcode from slider to a printer over LAN). At least I believe I saw their assurance to that note. Too lazy to look now. Perhaps I will - do not really need Prusa connect, only have to delete the old transfers when storage quota is reached, anyway.
If only there was a way to connect a cable from your computer to your printer to directly and safely transfer slicer files into your printer without having to compromise its security by connecting it to a network. Some sort of Serial Bus that would be Universal...
The problem is that when you bought a Bamboo for all this years you could use orca or panda touch or whatever you wanted. That was the default for the start. The close eco system whas not closed as everyone says. You can use other filament you can use other nozzle or any other upgrades you wanted. Now they changing the terms and closing down the eco system even more and this is onlythe start. They're not Apple. When you buying an Apple you already know for the start that is a close eco and there software is theirs from start to finish. Is not based on an open source software that you took and changed it to make it yours. If from the start you knew that you will only be able to use your printer with only there parts and software fine but this is not the case and this is wrong
Is bambu connect a cloud-base software?
I believe so
Our security, protecting our systems is just a cover story, the real goal is route all the print jobs through China (CCP) so they have unfettered access to all the design and intellectual property. Whatever you design is being forced to get deposited on servers located in China, are you comfortable with that?
Honestly, I think the whole situation here is a little sucky. I understand the need for better security - but it feels like Bambu Lab realized it had an exploit, and wants to cover its ass. We should all encourage end users to get informed and make the best decision for them. No two people have the same setup or ideas or wants for 3D printing. Push a firmware that makes people go "yeah, I understand the implications of having network access... " - and lean in to default to LAN only mode. Personally? I'm looking at X1Plus. My machine has been opted in for the rootable firmware, and I've got network security enough to thwart all but the most determined of hackers. At the end of the day, everything that's connected has the potential to be hacked, and it's up to the individual to decide if they should air gap it, or take increased risk for added convenience.
Unfortunately If we the end user do nothing then this will be the norm with all other companies. “Either we own the hardware or the hardware owns us”..
Because sending information out through the internet to their cloud and back is more secure than a wire across my office. "Security"
Don't forget their new "security keys" were cracked in a couple hours.
Especially if said cloud is located in China ( or US for that mattet)
The absurdity of their claims and even their "backtrack" statement today, you'd have to be a complete fool to fall for it.
