Deciding on a Student Loan? Come & Ask Us Anything!
I love your content but it is very hard to listen to because you say “um” so many times
I am wondering if "No Financial Need" meaning student will NOT get any form of aid including unsubsidized loan, work-study program, student employment opportunities, etc. Parents have to pay full price for college?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent! Do you have % class acceptance for Emory ED1 vs ED2?
Emory doesn't break this information out in their Common Data Set, but I found 2 school announcements that share that information. One is from Dec. 2023 and the other from Feb. 2024. Here they are - news.emory.edu/stories/2023/12/er_ed_class_2028_14-12-2023/story.html; www.emorywheel.com/article/2024/02/emory-oxford-admit-345-early-decision-ii-students-to-class-of-2028#:~:text=Emory%20University%20accepted%20345%20Early,ED2%20class%20is%20more%20balanced.

Very helpful, thank you Debbie!
You're welcome! Hope it was helpful.
50:07 it said “dependent education expenses PRIOR YEAR for X” yet css also said “tell us about the expenses paid by X parents for 2024-25”. Isn’t 2024-25 current year ? What should I write here? 2024-25 current year or previous academic year?
Hi, how can I see my application status once I've logged into my account? I have no dashboard in the right corner(or elsewhere).
can I also get presentation and links from there to my email?
What if the student's parents are still married yet one is in another country and doesnt take care of the student due to illness and also cant fill the css form. The actual css profile doesnt give an option for this
Hi. In the Current Education Information section I select 12th grade as my child's current grade then I search and select their HS. My child goes to a private HS so I'm asked if they received any scholarships and how much of the tuition I paid. How does this information impact the CSS Profile? Thanks
hello if my siblings just finished high school and have not gone to the university yet do i click "none" or "other"
Which question are you referring to?
Thanks - how can I get the embedded links?
Here it is - collegeaid.org/?
Can you only fill out the FAFSA if you do not want to request aid from the college itself? i.e. not fill out the CSS Profile? My college states they need the CSS & FAFSA if applying for financial aid, but wondering why they would need to know if I filled out the FAFSA. It might help in the admission process for need-aware schools if presenting myself as a full paying candidate?
For many schools, if you are a "full pay" student, this may give you an advantage in the admissions process. If you don't need aid, there's no need to fill out either the CSS Profile or FAFSA. But if you'd like to use federal student or parent loans, you can fill out FAFSA later, after you are accepted and still get access to these loans.
If the parents are married do they need to open an account? or it can be on the student account? the webpage has this information: "To complete a CSS Profile application as a parent, it is recommended that you use your student’s College Board account."
Priority filling date is different from deadline. ? Thanks
Yes - it's different. Priority deadlines typically come before the regular decision deadlines. If you apply by the priority deadline, your application might be reviewed earlier, and you might receive the decision ahead of those who apply by the Regular Decision deadline.
@ I see a priority filling date in my css profile dashboard . What happens if o miss that date
@ I apply early action and priority filling date is Nov 15
Hello, regarding the net income from business question on the css, I am wondering whether I should put the wage of my mother as that is the only money she receives from the business (the dilemma is due to there already being a question about wage and I dont want them to think that she makes double what she actually does) or whether I should just leave it as 0
Just put it in one place. Does she own her a business? If you shared her income and if's there's no net income from the business then leave it as 0.
for the Market Value Home question, is the number you report the current market value minus the remaining mortgage? basically, the equity you have in the home?
The CSS Profile asks for your home purchase price, purchase year, current value, and current debt. Their software calculates the equity in your home by subtracting your current debt from the current value.
@@Road2College not sure I understand. Do I report the current market value on that line or just the equity portion which is considered "what I own"?
@@jeffswierkas far as I understand you don’t input the equity yourself. The css form will calculate that automatically

This is the question where I am stumped - "How much did XXXX earn from work in 2023? (required)" What number do I include here? Is this gross pay or is this W2 box 1 (which is quite different from gross)? or is it something different?
similarly for the question "XXXX income from work (required)" Is this the estimated gross or W2 box 1 or something else?
@@lorrienitti9071same question, should I put gross or net salary (i am international)
25/26. Your student will be entering college in the fall of 2025 for the 25/26 academic year.
Thank you ❤❤
Should we fill out 25/26 or 24/25 this year?
Section of student, should i have to put SSN number? Or just leave it bank.?
Thank you so much, you so helpful 🎉

If the retirement accounts question is not required, why answer it? If you leave it blank, the following question on the retirement account balance does not come up. So, why volunteer information that it not required?
I am a widow and have created a living trust to put my house and all 401k etc in so when I die it doesn’t have to go through probate. Since it’s a living trust it is revocable. So on the css profile do I list this trust (as no one gets anything until I die which I hope will be many years away)
This book is the best book I’ve read on college admissions. Highly recommend it to students applying to college and parents. Thank you Becky!
We completely agree. It's a great book on admissions and a pleasure to read. Becky really focuses on what's important.
My class size is 500 plus students and teachers have so much LORs to send. I feel like I am burdening them with asking for optional essays.
Excellent insight as we begin our journey. Thank you both!
Kids have been "given" the wrong expectation. Most freshmen hate their first year which is why the industry tracks first year retention rates. Which can be as high as 4 out of 10 freshmen don't come back for sophomore year. Whether it is loneliness or weed out classes, they should be told up front what it is really like. 😮 If your kid isn't ready, send them to community college.
Great overview!

Does electing not to provide a Social Security Number effectively communicate to the colleges that the family is prepared to pay out of pocket?
Under the PROFILE/CITIZENSHIP section (Common App Tab), the app asks you to enter your social security number. It is not a required question but if you are going to apply for financial aid you have to enter this information. By default if you choose not to fill out this question you are signaling that you won't be applying for financial aid. If you don't apply for financial aid, the college will assume you are prepared to pay the sticker price. Depending on the college, they may still offer merit scholarships, but they are not expecting that you will apply for financial aid.
This is a really strong conversation. I wasn't a great engineering student but having a relatively strong set of quant skills combined with a strong liberal arts degree has been a really strong career base.
We agree - quant skills, soft skills, and learnings from a liberal arts education create a very strong educational base.
Hi Ms. Schwartz. Great video. Thx so much for posting it. We’re a family that won’t get any need-based aid from Pell grants or the like. When our child applies, should we indicate on the application that we won’t be seeking need-based aid? We will be applying for loans (both student and parent plus). What’s the best strategy here? Thx!
Just because you won't get need based aid from Pell doesn't mean you won't get need based aid from the college. A Pell grant is need based aid from the federal government, institutional aid is need based aid from the college. Estimate your SAI by using the government SAi estimator (studentaid.gov/aid-estimator/). If your SAI is lower the the school's COA, you have financial need. It depends whether the college will "meet" your need. If your SAI is lower than the COA and you need to borrow to pay for college, then I would indicate that you need aid. If you can pay the sticker price of a college, then you can indicate that you don't need aid. Otherwise, let the college know that you do.
@@Road2College Thank you for this quick answer!

The most informative college admissions webinar I’ve attended!
Thank you for this comment. We think Terry is an amazing resource. We're so glad you got value from the session.
thank you for this
We've visited 9 schools so far. All sound the same, all just as expensive regardless of school ranking or location. It's hard to understand which schools are merit generous, and noting that if it's need based, not likely to get any merit. They all sound the same and it's overwhelming!! Class of 2025.
Create a free account at Insights.Road2College.com. Then use Power Search and filter colleges by where your students ACT/SAT scores are at or above the 75th percentile. Sort the results by Avg. Merit Aid - this will show you a list of schools where your student is most likely to get merit scholarships.
Hi! Is there a way to get the pdf that the speaker spoke about?
Can we borrow less than what the school is suggesting? And for the private loans if you take the whole year are the payments split up by semester then interest starts per semester or is one payment made in August/September and then interest starts there? Specifically this is for College Ave since they hosted this event.
Yes - you can borrow less then what the school suggests. If you borrow an amount that covers the full year, you only start accruing interest when money is dispersed. The school will request what they need for each semester. So interest will only start accruing on the amount that is dispersed, not the full amount of the loan, until all the money is dispersed.
It's better to apply for a loan to cover the full year so you know you have funds for both semester. The interest will only start on the amount that is dispersed.
So helpful! Thank you!
1:27:49 Did we get a definite answer for this question?
Yes - Any parent can take out a parent plus loan, even if they aren't the parent who filled out FAFSA. In this case, the parent just needs to create an FSA Id and they can apply for the Plus loan. If you have more questions, email us at support@road2college.com.
