I've always loved his use of the walking bass!
Used to go see them at Andy’s all the time with my dad in the late 90’s early 2000’s. So good. They even took requests! Miss this a lot. I have a couple of their CD’s, and that marimba dude was fire!
J.C’s cymbal beat is absolutely beautiful. Wish I had met the man.
20:48
Thank you for this. I only saw him once, it was at a jazz dinner club in Metuchen, NJ. It was called the Cornerstone. When I saw him there it must have been around 1985-90. It was an experience I'll never forget. He made Concord Jazz a great record label. Saloon pianist indeed. Dancing in the Dark was a great CD, but so was his vol. 2 Live at Maybeck Hall. He was especially fond of his medleys like his Knowledge medley. I miss him greatly he also had a left hand like a hammer when it was required.
Wow....respect Mr Mckenna and may you rest in peace
Rest in Peace, Ernie and Butch. Two unique and gifted souls.
Like fine wine; he just gets better with age. I played the sax when I was younger. Never played it straight. I wonder why?! What's not to love 'bout this sax man? I played an e-flat alto and loved to create my own renditions too. (Drove my mother nuts. And she was a singer from the days of Goodman and Crosby) Go figure -
What is the tune he starts at 6:55? So beautiful and poignant.
When day is done
@@koosjaapvanzwieten5832 Thank you!!!
Only some of the greatest players of the last or any century. Davison/Hedges/Saunders/McKenna/Hinton/Grosz/Wayne AND RustyJones and company!!!
Tony Torrentino I believe. So talented. He could play anything!
Such marvelous memories of Honolulu, Hi. and listening to Mr. John Norris at a once popular hot spot, Trappers. Some people you’re better for knowing.
Now I want some Shakey's pizza!
Thank you for posting. Both guitarists sound great! Jack Petersen has an unending supply of beautiful musical phrases, all having substance. Some great technique on display as well. The old saying, "No chafe, all wheat" fits here.
Un grande non capito dagli li appassionati😅 del j😂azz❤❤
ottima band, notevole tecnica strumentale, formidabile ensemble e piacevolissimo dixieland. Grandissimo musicista Eddie Daniels
Wow, incredible video! Amazing what he played at the end. If you haven’t listened to the Radiolab podcast story about Bob’s brain, check it out.
I was lucky enough to get a private guitar lesson with Jack in 1984. He was a great instructor and, in just one lesson, gave me enough to study for the rest of my life.
He looked like he was enjoying a nice dinner, not playing complex musical masterpieces!
41:40 Slick! ...I can't believe those ppl are leaving, this is the coolest part of the song! Listen to that clarinet.
First Class Everything. Top Shelf. Thanks for posting this been trying to be like Boots since 1975. Don't think it's gonna happen.
kein Schwein hört zu, hat eine Ahnung...nicht nur in U.S. bars
Can you tell me the piano players name on John Norris jazz band ? Is it Ricky Tolentino ?
It's Papa...can you not tell by the playing???
@@joanjokela421 yes I wanted to verify for sure .
Thanks for this one. He grew up with my Dad. My Father's nickname was Red. Everytime he and my Mom wandered into the Copley shows, Dave would break into Red Sails at Sunset...
Nice tribute Dad!
What a great band! Never received the credit for their great performances. This recording does not do justice to the talent in this band. I have heard them live and have their album, which is better than great. I have actually worked with all members at one time or the other in various groups except Norm. The name of this band is "The Mason Dixie Line"
Dave McKenna is not "a pianist". It's a band leader in his own full right, conducting a complete ten pieces combo (more, if you count the feet too) in a Unique Superb Way.
Amazing, thank you so much! It seems that they know how to use the avaible space of the place to the maximum, Good Dave got lucky that the Grand was not traded for a Rhodes 😅
Un mito!
WBD. survived the bass solo at 1,39
Thank you for publishing the video. It brings back lots of great memories.
super "punk" rock, by that i mean the tempo. the energy, the connection! tight.
Una joya de documento, gracias por hacerlo visible, sin duda John un indiscutible maestro del piano en la historia.

I wonder how many years the Cullem JB played the GoldenRod Showboat. could they have been there as well in 86 or 87>?
My Dad and I really enjoyed following the Jazz Festival's. Long time ago...
Thanks for sharing this footage. I enjoyed Igor & his great band every time they played the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee. (wife loves 'em too. We continued going to MLJJ for some years, after we were married, as we lived in Tonopah, Nevada) It was always worth the trip.
