Packing my library. Part 1
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 месяца назад
Hi! I know I haven't posted recently. Partially because it took me some time to edit this video, along with unpacking the last boxes (notoriously the most difficult ones), discussing every single interior decision with my partner, building new furniture, and trying to stay in contact with our friends. But the time has come! Here is a one-hour video of me talking through almost all of my books. ...

    Religious apologia. Nothing more, nothing less. Just like Solzhenitsyn... propaganda to keep either their Orthodox church, or the West's Capitalist dystopia trundling along. Never believe in the myth makers - if you do, you will forever be their child.

The book that I am currently reading is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I will continue to read and I hope I will find more joy in reading it soon! Wishing everyone who enters the giveaway all the best of luck <3

    This is very interesting. Especially the detail about the possible origin of the use of the word „Master“ for the title character. The Master and Margarita has been one of my favourite novels since I first read it when it came out in an Icelandic translation when I was a teenager. I have reread it several times, in Icelandic and English (not in Russian, sadly). I also love, and reread regularly Black Snow, Bulgakov's roman à clef about his relationship with the Moscow Art Theatre and Stanislavsky. Thank you very much for this video!

    Peak of magic realism. But I still like A Dog's Heart more. The only thing I dont like about Bulgakov's writing is the chaos of the names. He can use one of 2 or 3 combinations of a name for the same character. And plus 1 a nickname.

    It's great to see you and glad you're well but do not feel bad - moving is the worst. I read Lolita when I was a teenager too and LOVED it. I thought it was beautifully written, sensual, and naughty. But then I tried to re-read it last year (as a 38/39 year old) and couldn't stomach it. I DNFed it like a third of the way in. LOL I'm also on a similar reading journey as you (focused on non-fiction and classics) and it has been great. I do sprinkle in contemporary and historical fiction to mix it up. disco elysium is basically a book so this is on brand

  • @purpletrauma
    @purpletrauma 9 месяцев назад

    Nice to see this topic talked about; found it by recommendations, but.. short version: there's lots of games I consider art.. I wanted to recommend some, but then realized you basically just really liked the narrative; Disco Elysium does what it does well, but it doesn't do too much that's especially new or special in gaming. In fact, it's more like an attempt to employ a more narrative-heavy style RPG into a game than the usual D&D dungeon crawl fare that just try to trick people into thinking their product is more robust by giving lots of isolated choices and measure your good/bad on a score at the end. Anyway; games meant to ask you about your interactions with the world: it's a genre called "choices matter". I mean, they're not all like that, but if you check that genre, it wont take you long to find games that are all about such things. Though most often, they're more focused on it. Like how Frostpunk; surviving in the post-apocalypse, and choices to prioritize survival or morals are opposite each other often. There's also games that are variations on the WW2 train game; a psychology game where you are a conductor for a train taking Jews to concentration camps, and the goal of the study was to see people react as they connect the dots throughout the game, and even watch as some people start trying to sabotage successfully getting to their destination. Plenty of games like that too, where you're given a goal and asked to question the morals and what you're actually doing. Also unique experiences where you're supposed to just explore all possibilities like Stanley Parable. Then of course, there's dating sims and picking who to pursue occasionally involving them each having their different plots you choose to follow. And here I was just going to originally rattle off recommendation. I still want to throw these out there: Proteus which gives me chills, Everything which is trying to express a philosophy through gameplay, Gone Home which started a trend of light narrative with deeply complex game maps that tell more story through items laying around than the narrator gives you, Kentucky Route Zero which I'm too weak of heart to get through the narrative about debt in rural America, and Soda Drinker Pro which I'm too weak of bladder before I feel overwhelmed by it.

    • @WelcometotheMuseum
      @WelcometotheMuseum 8 месяцев назад

      omg thanks for your thoughtful recommendations! I hope I will play Everything some day. I heard about this game first during the lecture on the philosophy and aesthetic in video games. It was during the exhibition that was organized in my home town in Siberia about art games and my friends also created some of the short games for that exhibition. It was a lot of fun! The professor who held the lecture also introduced Journey, which is an exceptional game in my humble opinion. And of course Stanley Parable! This is my all time favorite, but I don't dare to make a video about it. It is always a game I recommend to people without saying much. I just insist they should play it haha. Masterpiece! So for me it is not just "choices matter" but also the way these games redefine the notion of video games itself, they flirt with the standards and our interaction. It's like we're living in the postmodernism of gaming :) Never heard of Proteus, will check it out. Gone Home reminded me of Unpacking. I love when they do environmental storytelling! Kentucky Route Zero and Soda Drinker Pro also sound interesting. I hope one day I will have time to try all of them 😭 By any chance, do you recall the name of the WW2 train game? It was probably the game that was referred to in the recent bestseller book Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I agree with you, Disco Elysium doesn't invent genres and new interactions. That is why it was easy to play for somebody who is familiar with basic gaming mechanisms only. So yes there is strong emphasis on a story and character development, but I do appreciate how they married other art forms: British modernist painters, expressionists, classical literature, hard core philosophy, psychoanalysis, sci-fi-like world building and subcultures' aesthetics. By picking things from our reality and recycling it this way, I think this is what makes this game so special. And that is what some artists are trying to do: take everything from the world and make a new idea out of it.

      @@WelcometotheMuseum Took a moment of searching, but found it. It's just called Train, a 2009 board game. Surprised it was so recent; when I read about it in a book about game theory and design I thought it was a more historical thing. And yeah, so many good games out there; Proteus is highly recommended because it's a short experience. Each session is timed, and while you don't often find new things, there are various hidden interactions and.. well.. it's just a very meditative experience. Something worth going back to just to experience it. And yeah, I have plenty I can recommend. Honestly, I do plan on trying to do my own RUclips show about it, more about showcasing my niche interest in games with more artistic merit; I just want to highlight some stuff that's a niche I don't see talked about often.. well, more specifically, I found I had a type for games, and that type was smaller indie games with more novel and cute interactions. Found that out while trying to play a major action game, and found I was so interested in props and background details that the actual gameplay felt like a chore. Then I saw the loading screen hint saying safe zones can still be attacked and abandoned it. Control looks neat, but.. well.. the central game loop feeling like a chore made the decision quite easy to make. I also was more interested in digging lore and details than I was in participating in the plot in any way. Then I checked my library and found SO many that fit this niche that I wanted to highlight for people.AER, an interesting game with some spiritual themes. Sable; a coming-of-age story about a fictional world that got a stranded human population on it and its pilgrimage rituals for finding your purpose. Alba: A Wiuldlife Adventure is just some cutesy fun with a narrative around photographing wildlife and the big mean corporation wanting to just plow over the local environment to set up a major tourist hub on the island. Beyond Eyes; one of several games about being blind, a theme I find interesting and the games with that theme draw me in. Broken Age; a misunderstood point-and-click where the central draw was the handpainted graphics, but got trashed by a notable reviewer because they had personal expectations that the plot would be about a coming-of-age story, and were disappointed when it was more sci-fi meets fantasy. Broken Reality; explore a 3D world that feels like 2000s internet. Calico; unapologetically cute and LGBT positive themes in this game about running a cat cafe. Call Of The Sea; I can't say much without spoiling why it's amazing, sooo.. it's an H.P.Lovecraft inspired story, but it's not completely horror and takes an interesting twist. Matt Newell; not a game, but a person that made a bunch of short games that are just really realistic simulations of scenic locations in the world to simulate being there, and I believe is working on making one big one with all the various locations and more polish and additions to the systems. Cloud Gardens; a game about plants growing over abandoned structures.. that one is hard to describe properly, but is a very meditative experience. Anyway. I regularly donate to Humble Indie Bundle, so the many bundles of games gathered over the years meant I found over 200 titles I felt were worth considering for making episodes about. I think I decided I wanted to 3D animate it because I don't think of myself as interesting enough on my own, and thought it would help make things more entertaining and worth producing at all.. then I needed the art skills to work through the modeling tasks.. and I basically just wound up practicing hobbies rather than progressing anything for the past half year because I'm not comfortable with the quality I can produce. Currently I'm drawing lots of cubes and spheres on paper to try to make them more even because I'm too anxious and lack confidence to try to start doing still lifes yet. Thus, I've perpetually been on the verge of making a video about Here Comes Niko; a game that is just a bunch of adorable lighthearted fun, with some unobtrusive trans themes (doesn't make it a huge dramatic plot, but being trans is a thing implied about the protagonist) and just haven't yet. I'll get there eventually, probably.

    My favourite is Mona Lisait bookshop. They have a good selection with low prices. And of course Boulinier. I got a hardcover impressionism book for just 2 euros from there. Sadly Shakespeare&Co doesn't look like a bookshop to me anymore :( More like a Disney world attraction with long lines, an instagram hotspot. And the cafe they opened is too modern compared to the warm interior of bookshop. Anyway thanks for the video.

      Wow, thanks for sharing your recommendations, I will check them next time! Yes, I know what you mean about Shakespeare&Co, but it is for sure the place to find books in English 😅 But I also liked how they curated the selection of books. When I was there it was the Ulysses centenary and they offered books of the lost generation at the entrance, which was a nice touch. Don't know how often they change it though 🤷🏻‍♀️
