    Man, I only make this comment to help someone, and not to knock your effort in any way. I would not recommend doing this. If the rust has not been neutralized completely, it will keep rusting. Any rust particles that get stuck in any of the 3 valve blocks (each has 3 valves) will cause you headaches that will be very tricky to diagnose, and will end up costing more than just replacing that tank in the first place. Buy once, cry once. This is a potential nightmare for the next owner because those problems won't show up right away.

    Don't use the silcon - just get your window rebonded about £60 in the UK. Chances are if it is leaking at the bottom / sides it is also leaking at the top (very common in these)

    • @EverydayWorkshop
      @EverydayWorkshop 24 дня назад

      Hi Conrad, thanks for commenting. If you watch the video you will see it is leaking at the top. It’s a well known Volvo fault on these XC60s. The video is showing how cleaning out the blocked drainage channel can stop the leak (water will take the easiest route) as it did in this case. Ultimately like you say the windscreen will need rebonding. You will also notice I only applied silicon on the sides not the top. Although this wasn’t really necessary. Oh and a year and half later it was still not leaking, so I was pleased with the result and it made a good video. 👍🙂

    • @EverydayWorkshop
      @EverydayWorkshop 24 дня назад

      Hi Lloyd, thanks for your comment. Not really sure what you mean. Why would it be the wrong hole. The aim is to fill the oil filter as full of oil as you can to remove the air from the system, shortening the time it takes to build up oil pressure. As mentioned in the video it is a bit more difficult to do this with a side mounted oil filter. Hope this helps 👍🙂.

  • @markcondrey2297
    @markcondrey2297 29 дней назад

    Pre filling can introduce unfiltered contamination into the engine. The oil film left on the critical engine bearings is sufficient to lubricate the engine until oil prime is re established. My 1977 GMC with a 350 4 bolt main has 1,272,000 miles, doesn’t use or burn oil and I have never pre filled the oil filter. There are 424 oil changes on that engine. I think I would have noticed by now if not pre filling is bad!

    • @EverydayWorkshop
      @EverydayWorkshop 28 дней назад

      Hi Mark, thanks for commenting. I have to disagree though, there are more likely ways to introduce contamination into an oil filter than using brand new oil out of a brand new sealed container. Your GMC with 424 oil changes is the main reason you’ve never had an issue. But if you’d like it to cover another 1.2 million miles I know this would be beneficial. I’ve done literally thousands of oil changes over the years and have heard that brief but excruciating sound of big end contact just before the oil pressure builds many times, especially in older engines. If you own your car and can shorten this period in my opinion it’s a no brainer, it will definitely be kinder to the engine increasing its longevity. Not trying to be argumentative just enjoying the discussion. 🙂👍 There is a very good video I found on RUclips a while ago with proper test proving the value of filling your oil filter if it’s possible. I’ll try and find it and post a link if you’re interested.

      I don’t claim to be a expert, I am however speaking from experience. My dad was a professional mechanic who owned his own shop. He taught me to change my oil every 3,000 religiously. He explained that when you refill a paper filter made on mass production equipment, there is a better than average chance that dust from the cutting machine will be in the pleats of that filter. He said there was even a chance of metal contamination from the outer shell stamping machine. Now as to if any of that is true and to what extent… I can’t honestly say. But I can say that my GMC has over a million miles and the engine compression is still 178 lbs. and I never pre filled as per dad’s advice. And yes I am open to suggestions and your opinions. Maybe I won the engine lottery with this particular small block, but I like to think that dad was right.

      @@EverydayWorkshop yeah well we can wish all we want but the days when parts were made here and had quality built right in are long gone, replaced by the whole “parts are cheap enough to buy over and over” mentality. that’s fine for kidneys and hip joints, but i don’t want some crappy betters that still cost $145 to pick the worst time to crap out. and it did, does, will. some things should just be superior quality because of their uses. families use them. people who make crap quality parts can’t stand behind the products they make, or do but those parts are designed to fail regularly on schedule. but anyway just went to home depot and bought the exide 51R to put in a miata. let’s hope.

      Let’s hope it doesn’t let you down, time will tell. I agree though car manufacturers definitely design failure into the vehicles, not soon enough to get a really bad name but at a point where they make a fortune on parts replacement sales. I remember back in the eighties to early nineties as a small independent garage we were replacing more than 5 Ford doors lock barrels per week. Now if you do some basic maths, our town say with 10 garages times say 100 towns. All very conservative numbers. The locks back then cost around £20 each from Ford, it works out around £5,200,000 in sales per year for them. Probably way way more, but not bad. 👍🙂

    It’s not necessary to pre-fill your filter. You can for like but not needed and as for reducing engine damage that we will say 2-3 starts a year after an oil change will NOT make a difference on how long the engine lasts… Bigger factors would be a filter without an anti-drain back valve or vehicles that have top mounted cartridge style filters. Good advice but again not needed!

    • @EverydayWorkshop

      You are absolutely correct, for most people it wouldn’t make any difference while they have their vehicle. Hi Steve, thanks I’m please enjoyed it, and hopefully found it useful. If you haven’t seen it I have a video showing the ramps build. Link: ruclips.net/video/-_SDamRqlsA/видео.html You notice I used my arm torque wrench 😉. I’m happy knowing I’ve tightened enough without over tightening. I did put the torque of I think 35 Nm in the description, which is probably about 28 lbft. 🙂👍

      Thanks I’m glad you’ve found it useful. I know they use the same engine but can’t be certain they use the same ancillary’s such as filter housings. 🙂👍

    if the manufacture does not explicitly state to do this then do not do it.

      Just because the manufacturers don’t state it, doesn’t mean it’s not kinder to your engine. 🙂👍

      @@EverydayWorkshop is there anyway you can make a video of lean codes on a v8 both banks. No air leaks, no change in performance just codes won’t clear
