DIY failures, what not to do and how to avoid costly mistakes
This car came in with several electrical gremlins after some diy repairs, they appear to have been done correctly minus diagnostics to confirm what was wrong. After checking it out I found that the new parts were faulty and causing all the new problems that developed after replacement of the alternator.

2001 Ford F-Series AC compressor front seal replacement
Просмотров 112День назад
This new purchase by a customer and family member came with some issues, one of which the AC didn’t work when it got hot this spring, very quickly I realized it was more than just being low because the high side pressure was too high, I assumed it had air in the system and saw oil collected around the clutch so we went ahead with a seal replacement. (note, when I refer to oil in this video I’m ...

Customer interviews can cut a lot of unnecessary diagnostic time

This vehicle had us going down the wrong path as we were following what we believed was an engine issue, however a more in depth interview with the customer had us checking a different system with a different method that led us right to a rare and unusual but simple problem.

This van came in for ball joints and as it was a direct customer request and he already had the parts I figured I’d better look it over to confirm the problem…and WOW was I shocked at what I found. I came from a shade tree background where we did all our work ourselves and I don’t look down on anyone who does, but you have to know what you’re doing and make sure it’s safe to be on the road.

The problem is that savings is more then just 20 bucks for example I just put a new alternator in my truck the alternator only cost me 228 dollars if I had a mechanic do it it would of cost between 500 to 600 dollars after labor and god only knows what other feeds. I will agree though that you really need to make sure you know what you’re doing before taking on your own jobs do a lot of research.

My mother's 2014 Chev Impala LS (2.4) is spitting out multiple codes (P0011, P0033, P0106, P0131, P0171 and now P0297). Mechanic gave up on it and said he got them all except the fuel trim (said the long term idle is at 19% and he can't lower it). No idea what to do next - most likely car dealer.

Its not the 20 bucks im looking to save. Its the 80 to 120 an hour on a job thats always quoted for 2 hours longer than it actually takes because there might be "eventualities" like something stuck or corroded. Imagine the customer charging you 2 bucks a minute for them to tell you what the problem is in the first place.

Just looked at my moms car, a Nissan versa, it had a weird scraping noise coming from the front drivers side wheel. The bottom nut on the sway bar link was missing. The threads were completely intact, it didn’t break. It’s just kind of hard to get good leverage on the nut with your wrench when your arm is in the wheel well. So whoever put that sway bar link on just said fuck it and barely tightened the lower nut, causing it to come off eventually.

Yes, too many people do not know what they are doing, but do it anyway. When I got started working on cars (Fords), I purchased the Ford shop manual and the Chilton’s manual, and studied both before I started work, and while I was working. Back then, Chilton provided Chilton Tips that saved a bit of time, or explained a bit better what was going on, and was a worthwhile investment. Even today it pays to review both the Ford manual and a Chilton book, even if the Chilton books are not as good as they once were. Joe

you are right about some points, but the reason he obtained the parts is shops jack them way up, and the reason he found "a guy" is because "you guys" are empires that charge more than a vegas hooker and brain surgeon per hour combined. And all this fortune goes to greedy owners and managers who sit behind a desk or arent there while the tech gets scraps from the table and is ALSO pressured to get it done in less time than quoted, so theres EVEN more scammery.
