Halfmoon Fly Fishing
США
Добавлен 12 июн 2020
Halfmoon Fly Fishing was born deep in a mountain ravine in the Midwest one afternoon. The channel is about everything fly fishing, from the Midwest to the Deep South. Practically every species of fish is a target on the fly rod, as well as a few species you may not have thought about targeting before.

Halfmoon Fly Fishing | Channel Trailer
Welcome to the channel. This should give you an idea of what to expect here at Halfmoon. Trout in the high alpine lakes and rivers, gar and bowfin in the South, Snook and Redfish in the Glades, and some new species to come later you may not have fished for before.
Also, as an update for the channel, I am currently in the process of finishing the in class portion of my degree and will start clinical rotations which last about a year. Hopefully, this means I will have some more free time to spend on new projects as well as giving me the opportunity to fish some new waters.

Teeth | Fly Fishing for Longnose Gar
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.11 месяцев назад
With a week off from school, I decided to take some time to showcase fly fishing for Longnose Gar, one of the most underappreciated rough fish to target. These are some incredibly ancient fish, dating back all the way to Pleistocene era. With a lifespan of around twenty years, they can grow to over five feet long and weigh around 40lbs. A primitive lung allows them to thrive in areas with low o...

While visiting extended family in Florida, I decided to spend a day exploring the Everglades area on my kayak. I wasn't able to spend nearly enough time here before a cold front blew in and the temps plummeted, but the fishing wasn't half bad considering this was my first time in the Glades. I ended up with three different species in the boat on my TFO Mangrove 10wt fly rod and Lamson Liquid Re...

I left out a TON of details that would really have stretched this video out, so if you have ...
Fly Fishing For The Future | A Conversation About Conservation

Fall Streamer Fishing | Montana

Last week I managed to slip off for a little to target big pre-spawn browns moving upstream. The weather turned nasty the night before, resulting in rising water and a lot of overhead cloud cover with the occasional rain. I didn't find the 22 that I've been hunting, but the fishing did not disappoint. The hunt will continue for the big one over the next few weeks until the spawn is in full swing.

It also happens to be a terrific fighter on a fly rod; interestingly enough, no one fishes specificall...

Bring back the videos man! I can only watch the same video so many times 😂😂 great videos my friend. Caught my first gar on a fly two days ago and I'm fully hooked!
I'm glad you're enjoying them my dude. I actually tried to shoot two videos recently but neither really turned out what I was expecting. Now school has geared up again so I'm holding out for another trip. Thanks for following along, I'm working on an update for the channel that I'll release over the next few weeks.
What's your fly rod combo
I think at the time it was an Orvis 8wt Clearwater with a Lamson Liquid. The Lamson is still running strong, but I have a TFO Mangrove now.
@halfmoonflyfishing what do you think of the mangrove? Im trying to find a rod for bigger carp and bass. Also love my liquids. Have them on my signature 2 and lk legacy.
@@gregjr63 Admittedly, I don’t have much experience with enough brands to compare them to. That being said, I do think they are a better quality rod, and are significantly easier to have replaced. I’ve landed everything from sharks to bass on my 8wt and it has held up fine. I do recall a guide I was with once saying how much he enjoyed the mangroves when he first started thanks to its durability and reliability (if that helps you at all). And of course, you can’t beat a Lamson.
Nice fish.
Thanks man! There was definitely some bigger ones around and I lost a huge one in the end of the video.
Amazing content! Nice setup all around
That's sick! I saw some big gar in the river today - want to try to catch them on the Tenkara rod. Will have to create some of these rope fly things.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but you won’t be catching 10-20lb Gar on a Tenkara rod. Maybe the smaller ones. But happy hunting!
@@halfmoonflyfishing Challenge accepted! Maybe not soon, but I’ll get it done. Enjoyed your videos - keep it up 👍
@@dtffishingmi good luck brother! And thank you!
super helpful video man, thank you!!

Awesome video. What river is this?
It’s in middle Georgia, can’t remember the name of it. Quint (boat owner) just dropped us off there
@@halfmoonflyfishing gotcha brother! I live pretty close to middle Georgia so I was curious me and my buddies are going on a similar trip pretty soon on the Flint river. Looking forward to more videos from you.
@@banksy4948 Thanks Banksy! I’m you’ll find some there for sure.
What rivers do you typically fish in Georgia for gar?
Honesty, just about every river and lake in Georgia has them. Typically behind dams or around big bends in rivers where the Eddie’s form up at. If you fish for them with a fly rod then you’ll need the water to be somewhat clear so you can sight fish them.
Professional quality!
Dope trailer. More gar content!!
Biggest one I ever caught was 7 and some change its the Juliette lake record awesome catches tho man
Congrats on the record! They are pretty cool fish, we have a lot of them in the state
We really do theyre overlooked a lot just like shoalies are overlooked by quite a few people too (but im ok with that)
Awesome video. Casually slamming gar on the fly...I'm inspired!
It’s a great fishery that’s seldom taped into. Fished with a guy last year who typically fished trout and was amazed at how large they can grow
What fly line do u use? And weight
This was mostly on a 10wt TFO with 8wt line. I didn’t have a 10wt reel at the time so I was just making it work. The 8wt rod broke the previous day
Great video. Best gar on fly video on RUclips💯
Big thanks! Hopefully some better ones to come this summer!

1-10. The elitism.
Honestly I can deal with that because every form of hunting or fishing has elitism in some way or another. It is annoying, comrade
Great fish, great film
Thanks Tim!
The kayak you’re using looks to be quite stable. Can you tell us about it? Brand, length, weight, pros & cons. I’m searching out a good one to use here in some of our Northern CAL waters. Thanks!
It’s actually an old Perception Striker 11.5, not sure about the width but it is a “tri hull,” which is why it looks so stable. Great to fly fish from but doesn’t paddle quite as well as a typical kayak. Stand up paddle boards are a great option too, if I could do it again I probably would have bought one of those instead.
I remember that brand and model now that you mention it. Thank you!@@halfmoonflyfishing
Gar are one of my favorite freshwater fish to target on fly here in Texas. Great video, thanks for sharing.
One day I'll make the trip there to find some alligator gar. Thanks for watching!
What are you using can you tell me where i can buy
I actually tie them myself, but I don’t sell any. There’s a video I linked if you want to tie them, otherwise you can look on Etsy or I think Blue Line Co also sells them. Hope that helps!
Fellow Georgian! Great content you’ve earned a subscriber!
I appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
Fun stuff! I really want to catch a gar without a hook ... hopefully next time I'm in Dallas I can get into some. Fun video!
Good luck, and make sure to bring some pliers! 🤘🏼
This is quality 🔥 nice fish. We need to get together to fish sometime. Maybe do a float!
If I can find some time from school, this was about only the fourth time I’ve been on the water this year
@@halfmoonflyfishing our schedules are pretty packed right now anyways. If you have a weekend a couple of weeks ahead just let us know.
This is really well done. Really like the film work on this!
Thanks man! Always appreciate some feedback
I know that exact section. Such a unique part of Georgia. Sick vid
Very unique indeed. I hate that I don’t get to fish this area of Georgia more often
Cool spot and awesome fish! I recommend trying a strip-set on bigger fish like these ones instead of using the rod to set the hook. Orvis rods are strong, but using the line to set the hook will result in a better hook set and will be safer on your rod.
Thank you for the tip Johnathon. I have yet to break a rod trout-setting a bowfin or any fish for that matter, but strip sets do indeed give a better hook set with these fish because of their boney mouths. Probably didn’t help I was excited either. Thanks for watching and enjoying the content!

@@halfmoonflyfishing Right on. If it works, it works-and sometimes if the fish is real close in tight quarters it’s the only option-just wanted to make sure you had all options available. ;)
What do you suggest for a complete beginner going for snakehead bass and peacock bass in Florida. Would it be an 8 weight or what I’m a little lost with all of this.
Yeah man, start with an eight weight. Good all around rod for fresh/saltwater species. As far as specific brands, I like lamson’s reels for freshwater and TFO rods. However, I would highly suggest using Facebook marketplace if you can’t drop a ton of money on a set up, there’s a lot of good pre-used rod/reel combos that guys don’t use anymore or upgraded to something else. I imagine poppers and streamers would work well for all three of those species. Make sure to do some research as well, there’s a lot of guys in Florida going after freshwater stuff on fly rods. Fly shops down there are a good resource. Hope that helps!
I use a 6wt for the species you listed but an 8wt will allow you to go after some bigger species as well and you can find an affordable rod and reel outfit at bass pro
I would also advise against getting a plastic reel. Some of the combo 'kits' you find at Cabela or Bass Pro have plastic reels that are absolute trash, like the Reddington Crosswater or Orvis Encounter kits. Look for one that has a metal reel.
@@plankisdead8356 5wt for snakeheads, peas and ditch tarpon/snook be plenty…8wt fly rod is overkill you can catch everything he’s catching in this video on a 5wt
Leadering them counts.
Sweet video, looks like a blast!
Hard to beat poor mans GT. Thanks for watching!
@@halfmoonflyfishing Never caught one of those but they look pretty similar to GT which are awesome!
@@joabloganfishing Never caught one either, but I’m more than happy to settle for Jacks
There's no absolutes, but when you find the small to medium tarpon in those creeks, you don't need to cast to the mangroves. You can put the fly right down the middle, which allows you to cover a bit more water. Enjoyable vid!
Yeah, I figured that out about halfway into the trip. It definitely saved some time. Thanks for watching!
Love it man. Can I ask where you mean by 'Southwest' please? I hope to travel to Florida for the first time and have to give this a go.. Thanks
Everglades is in the Southwest part of Florida. There’s a lot of online resources that can point you in the right direction, but any body of water in the area seems like it holds a lot of diversity in fish species. Try checking out Ole Florida Fly Shop, they have some good information on there. Hope this helps!
@@halfmoonflyfishing Thanks man. Apologies, yes, I am aware that the everglades are in the south and southwest of Florida but I was actually probing for a more precise info on exactly what body of water(s) on where to focus some attention on tbh; even the body of waters where you were fishing exactly, or where it might be close to? Hope you don't mind me asking, no problem if you don't wish to be more specific.. Its just that I'd be coming a long way (UK) and really need some precise locations and advice on what waters are particularly good to fish.. thanks again
@@chuckarooful if you are coming from the UK I am the last person to ask for advice unfortunately. I have very limited experience fly fishing in saltwater. Your best best is to hire a guide to show you around and put you on fish. Just my opinion, you can do it yourself but chances are you won’t find what your looking for.
@@halfmoonflyfishing No problem buddy. No worries. We will hire guides for sure but we can't afford to hire guides every day of our trip, they are way too expensive for us unfortunately, that's why we are looking for some DIY options like kayaking the way you are doing this video..We just need some ideas of where to try, we have no idea where, the place in the video looks perfect.. 👍
@@chuckarooful Completely understandable. I won't give specifics, but definitely look for larger canal systems with a lot of current. Google Earth is how I found mine. The more water moving from the tides usually means better fishing (saltwater at least).
You know what’s funny is I used to run the exact same setup as you! TFO Clouser 10wt and Lamson liquid 9-10.
Ironically the TFO 10wt Mangrove was my backup rod, glad I had it with me though. I'll probably end up getting a 8wt version of it at some point this year. Thanks for subscribing!
@@halfmoonflyfishing No problem! We have good taste lol. I was looking at a mangrove coast 8 weight as well for medium size application but I’m liking Scott Wave too.

Beautiful video
Number 7 is also called “sucking cork”
Possibly my favorite comment so far.
I call them invasive brown trout, cause that's what they are. Same as a common carp. No difference. Even worse honestly because they are put there by the people we are supposed to trust the health of our waters too.
They’ve been around for about 150 years at this point, so while they aren’t native they are here to stay. Unless you’re talking specifically about stocked brown trout, which is something entirely different
5:07 Texas hole baby!
Which river is that one on? 😂
Hey kid.... spend a little more time fishing and less time bitching. Also looks and sounds like you've had enough to drink. Thumbs down kid
Dont ever come to new zealand, half the crap ive heard from you makes me believe its all about you, fishing huge back country rainbows and browns is a sport here, you walk for hours, camp out, walk more hours, we let our friends know where we are fishing, what to use, the fish in this part of the world are sports fish, trophy fish and over 95% are returned to be caught again, you seem to be a selfish young man so stick to fishing your home waters, we have hundreds of Americans coming here for trophy trout and they have a fantastic attitude, there's always one plonker and that one is you, just my opinion.
Very true about rock cairns. However, this applies only to the river. If you're the trail in high altitude locations, they are likely trail markers
I usually don’t touch the ones up high in the mountains unless they’re far from a river or stream, but most people that are fly fishing don’t make it that high into the mountains. Good point though
I will give a bit of history on why some people call them german brown trout, and some random additional info. The original brown trout that were stocked in North America were river trout (Salmo trutta fario), and lake trout (Salmo trutta lacusris) from inland Germany. These two strains of trout were bred together to create the bulk of the genetics for the standard "American brown trout". Several years later, additional trout were brought in from Britain, these were a combination of river trout and sea trout (Salmo trutta trutta) and they were crossed with the "American brown trout" but for whatever reason, the sea run characteristic was lost probably due to dilution. Later still, there was a massive effort to establish a sea run fishery by importing sea trout from Finland. This strain of Finnish sea trout was kept pure, but they failed to become established in any reasonable number. Lastly, some lakes were stocked with Ohrid trout, which is a different species of brown. They never become established.
Awesome info- good job!
Thanks Will!
Good job man!
Liked the video. How to hold a fish?? try not to.
I feel sorry for you guy’s. First the brown trout is NOT native to North America they we’re brought to America in the 1800’s from, you guessed it Germany 🇩🇪 thus German Brown trout. You see your NOT old enough to even know what Fly Fishing is /was before the early 1990’s when suddenly it was the coolest thing on earth to fly fish. The sport (lack of a better term) was then taken OVER by pompous ass Texas oil billionaire’s. BOOM: and it was ruined. This is when one of these assholes would see you catch a fish and he would move in on your spot. Well made fly rods went from maybe 300.00$ to 1000.00$ overnight. This is the crap that forced my fishing buddy to COMPLETELY give it up, unfortunately. But your video is pretty much dead on. Tight lines son. It was so much better, fun and relaxing before the billionaire boom.
