Sad that this great instrument is incarcerated in a museum! John Challis was a personal friend and always considered this instrument his masterpiece!

My dad had a large collection of E Power Biggs vinyl LPs. This was one of my faves. Thought Chopin's Polonaise would make a fabulous wedding processional and Weber's Country Dance an equally charming recessional.

Excellent playing, E. Power Biggs. Perhaps a little bit too metallic of a sound for me...Even though not as sonorous as this one, a true wooden instrument is more enjoyable to me.
This one had a soundboard of anodized aluminium and channel brass bridges. The later instruments of John Challis were incredibly stable, but they sound, well, metallic! And given the sheer inconvenience of tuning this kind of pedal harpsichord (the upper instrument needed to be lifted off in order to access the tuning pins for the pedal, one can sympathise with wanting maximum stability!

How much does a pedal harpsichord cost? Do you have to build the pedal part yourself?
quite expensive i imagine, you can try to build one yourself but you need blueprints first, or a very good imagination, good luck!

It's a beautiful instrument and it is a disgrace that it is languishing in a museum. If I had the money i'd ask the Met if I could examine it and make a replica. I love the old instruments and their copies but this thing has guts. It's far nicer than the Pleyel that Landowska played.
A shame this wonderful instrument languishes silent now :(
This is the instrument I remember at Challis's studio on lower 5th Ave in NYC. I was privileged to play this before Mr. Biggs made his final pronouncement and it was shipped to Harvard University. Mr. Biggs had it toned down considerably for the original sound which was gutsy and pronounced. Mr Challis built a smaller version sans pedals for me years ago and I still have the instrument. I found a younger person who could bring back the aggressive sound that Challis really liked.
The picture is not the instrument that Challis built for Mr. Biggs . I played the final instrument and this picture is of a much smaller instrument. The instrument was nearly 9 feet long.

When these personal events are mentioned and we read them, some of the culture you and others like you experienced is passed on to us readers. We are all enriched by this.
it's a Challis harpsichord! I LOVE it! John Challis built a two manual harpsichord for me and, after 30 years, it is still excites me.

I was 14 when I discovered E. Power Biggs. He spoiled me for everybody else. (Certainly he destroyed my ability to enjoy Virgil Fox, the Liberace of the organ!)

Fábio Marchioro É um instrumento incrível! De onde é, no Brasil? Aqui em MG, não se vê apreciadores no dia a dia, mas, se procurar, acha muita gente!
Eu sou do Rio grande do Sul, mas o público de música clássica aqui é muito seleto, e geralmente os que apreciam o fazem somente por fazer, mas não por terem um exacerbado gosto, e pouquíssimos conhecem algo sobre música barroca. Eu adoraria a aprender a tocar cravo, atualmente só sei tocar flauta transversal e flauta soprano.
Legal, tenho muita vontade de conhecer o RS! :-) Não entendo por que o sul não preservou muito da música clássica em geral. Sei do balé Bolshoi em SC, mas não ouço falar muito mais do que isso... =/ O que quer dizer exatamente com "somente por fazer"? Aqui em Minas, muitas dessas tradições estão nas cidades históricas. Dos séculos XVII ao XIX, Ouro Preto, São João d'el Rey, Tiradentes, Mariana, Diamantina, Serro, Congonhas e várias outras cidades foram sede do barroco mineiro e, dessas cidades, há inúmeros compositores do período barroco, que infelizmente foram quase esquecidos e somente alguns, recentemente resgatados. Alguns muito bons! Todas essas cidades têm grupos de música clássica e música barroca. Juiz de Fora possui um dos maiores festivais de música barroca e música antiga de MG, mas infelizmente acho que andou parado por falta de investimentos, não tenho certeza... Belo Horizonte (onde moro) tem duas grandes orquestras: a Sinfônica e a Filarmônica de MG, que já está bem internacional. Além de algumas pequenas orquestras de escolas, da UFMG e grupos de música antiga/barroca (conheço três, mas sei que tem mais). Infelizmente é um pouco difícil encontrar "na rua" uma pessoa que aprecie música clássica aqui, mas sempre que vou a concertos (toda semana tem alguns), estão sempre lotados! E vejo alguns entusiastas fervorosos. =D Dá uma olhada no meu canal aqui, tem uns vídeos de música barroca que gravei há uns anos... Eu toco um pouco de piano, mas acho que estou mais para a composição do que para a execução. Em qual cidade mora no RS? Toca em algum grupo musical? Abraço!
Eu moro em Porto Alegre, já toquei em grupos musicais na Igreja de São Vicente, mas por pouco tempo, o grupo acabou por falta de quórum. Minas Gerais REALMENTE é um espetáculo, é daí que emana toda a música barroca no Brasil, em outros estados isso não é tão forte. Sempre quis visitar o sul de MG além de querer conhecer as ferrovias históricas que aí existem. Os gaúchos (entre os quais me incluo) são um povo muito bom, e somos milionários em cultura, mas o problema é que a maioria dos gaúchos são extremamente bairristas, e a nova geração é xenófila, a cultura gaúcha ainda é muito forte entre os mais velhos (bairristas) e entre os mais jovens não, a cultura gaúcha está com os dias contados. Infelizmente nem mesmo o público seleto de apreciadores da música clássica gostam do barroco, e temos a OSPA- Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, contudo, raramente já os vi interpretar alguma composição do período barroco, o que convenhamos é uma tristeza tremenda subestimar o mais belo gênero de música.
Good to have this reminder: what a good musician Biggs was, and what fine sounding harpsichords Challis was building--both at an early date in understanding Baroque music.
I knew this man and his philosophy about harpsichord evolution was about bringing this grand sound into the 20th century. In my estimation, he did what he said he would do.
Wonderful! I, respectfully, played this instrument at Mr. Challis' residence at 5th Ave. and 23rd St. in NYC loo these many years ago before Mr. Biggs played it.. It was, and still is, an exciting instrument...Mr. Biggs did have Mr. Challis "tone it down" a bit but...the intensity is still there. I understand that this fabulous instrument is now incarcerated in a museum at Harvard! Would that they would let it speak again in the real world..but "such is the kingdom of heaven".....as it were.
And his Scott Joplin is just as good!
I do not know who added this photo to this site but.....I played this marvelous instrument before Bigg's received it....and...the instrument in question was at least almost 8 feet in length! Mr. Challis was a dear and valued friend.
I don't know who added this photo to the Bigg's recording but THIS is not the instrument as illustrated. That instrument is at least 7 feet 5 inches..instrument!

Why does the instrument sound so different to part one? the first one sounded like a clavichord, this actually sounds like a harpsichord
