Frazetta Fridays w/Frazetta Girls | Frank Frazetta & The Mark of Kane
In this episode of Frazetta Fridays with Frazetta Girls, Sara Frazetta, granddaughter of Frank Frazetta and owner of Frazetta Girls, explores the synergy between Frank Frazetta’s art and Karl Edward Wagner’s legendary antihero, Kane. Frazetta’s paintings brought Wagner’s dark fantasy world to life, capturing the essence of Kane-immortal and absolutely ruthless.
Sara discusses the impact of Frazetta’s work on the Kane book covers, discussing how his cover art elevated Wagner’s storytelling and solidified the character’s place in history. She also takes time to spotlight Wagner himself-a master of dark horror with a “litt...

    As a teen in the late 70s, I got into comics, buying various titles including the Marvel Conan comic. I quickly realized Conan was based on written stories and found a couple of the newer Conan books including the The Road of Kings. But then I found the Acer republished versions of the Conan Lancer books from the 60s with those Frazetta covers, and that's the rather roundabout way I discovered Robert E. Howard. The Boris covers that Acer used on some of the Conan books were nice, but Frazetta better captured the raw power and savagery of Conan. I can't say I ever became a fan of Karl Edward Wagner, but I did eventually read The Road of Kings and enjoyed it.

    Thanks for sharing this story. It always brings a smile to my face when you mention your grandfather didn't go out of his way to meet the authors or attend conventions as well as his overall outlook in regard to his art. I've been watching some convention videos recently and I can see its an uncomfortable experience for most artists but its "necessary evil" to tap into that revenue stream. It's weird dynamic where you can see an artist light up when people ask really good questions about the art and the creative process and then shutdown when the conversation gets less about the art and more about the character or content the art was based on. These little insights into your Grandfather's world help me reinforce the notion to myself that art is only one facet in a multifaceted life. I may draw upon inspiration from all aspects of my life to create art but its not the end all be all. It's rare to get to see or hear about these other private life "facets" from artists who I greatly admire and gain inspiration from.

The Kane books being one that the owner recommended to me, and got me all the books.

    Thanks Sara for this: excellent background on Wagner, whose early death was indeed a great tragedy. Kane is not a nice person at all but there's that subtle element of pity that Wagner managed to add to the character which leaves me unable to outright hate him - the mark of an excellent writer. Of your grandfather's Kane paintings, the one for "Darkness Weaves" has long been my favourite (I recall reading that it's often referred to as "Kane On The Golden Sea"). Is he gazing at some distant horizon? Or is he gazing inwardly,self-reflectively? In either case it won't lead to anything pleasant. Thanks again Sara.

    • @FrazettaGirls
      @FrazettaGirls 2 дня назад

      I love that question about Darkness Weaves. I guess that's what made Frazetta such an incredible artist like Karl as a writer. He leaves that open to the viewer. We get to wonder and feel, which I believe is the very purpose of art. Thank you so much for watching.

    THANK YOU for clearing that up. It's been annoying that people continued to label the Darkness Weaves roughs of Kane (obvious if anyone noted the red hair and beard and read the book) as Conan for the Buccaneer (again, any reader of the book can see that). So, thank you finally, officially clearing that up. Frank Frazetta's legacy is only enriched by the truth. Frank's Kane covers are among his best, most evocative paintings. Unlike collectors who just bought the books, I and many others READ them. Because of Frank's work the term "don't judge a book..." is pretty much ded to me. Yeah, his art was thrown on some stinkers but most were at the very least entertaining and some were quite good, like Wagner's Kane tales.

    • @FrazettaGirls
      @FrazettaGirls 2 дня назад

      It's incredible when the writing can match the cover art. I've heard mostly positive reviews about the books on which his art appeared. I've read many Conan stories but yet to read ERB, Wagner or Moorcock. Looking forward to finally exploring more creative greatness. I was so glad to finally clear this up. We were posting the wrong information on our socials for a long time and a friend of mine Daren Bader brought it to my attention when he brought one of the rough works to the museum in FL last year. I then finally had it STAMPED in me when my dear friend Arnie Fenner told me this WAS Kane and NOT Conan! The truth will set everything free!

    "Death Angel's Shadow" was the first Kane book I bought when I was a teen. Frank's stunning cover art is what drew me to it as I had been a fan of his contributions to the Conan saga. Many thanks for posting this Sara! Keep up your amazing work -- it's truly appreciated!

    I have always been a fan of Frank Frazetta's art. I especially like the ink drawings.

    The consistent theme throughout all of these videos is when you compromise your vision for short-term gain, you sacrifice your long-term legacy. Frazetta's legacy is still thriving because his uncompromising attitude led to the creation of works that others are still drawn to and have them endlessly talking about. It's a shame to hear about alcohol burning out so many other great talents, though. I've seen it first-hand, many times and it gives me a profound sadness to think about. Thanks for another great video, well researched and splendidly presented.

      @@FrazettaGirls I won't and I appreciate you saying that. I think about you often, as I work, looking forward to the day that I reach out and present to you the culmination of everything I've been endlessly pushing forward on for the bast (almost) three years, now. It's going to be worth it and I hope it excites you.
