Thank you! Great information!
Great video
I'm glad you enjoyed it 😎
That’s a beautiful forest you’re in
That is “The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park” California. Its the closest forest to my house. Its great! Lots of trails for hiking and mountain biking.
I put it on my Rottweiler and she was fine with it picking her up and being carried. But I found the straps really dig in to you're shoulder's and weight doesn't sit right, I found walking round in it really uncomfortable and hard to do to the point that I tried just picking her up in my arm's to compare. I found it lighter, faster, easier and more comfortable with her in my arm's. So unless I can find out what I'm doing wrong I'm going to return it. Also this video was unhelpful as he just got it out the bag already to go witch is not how you get it. Then he stick's his dog in it and say's maybe tighten this strap that you can barely see and that's it.
Thanks for watching 🫡

Where are the Alaska Videos about the National Parks etc?!
Long overdue 😢 after I made this I was busy with more parks in AK then drive home, then drive to Wisconsin and hit Grand Teton+Yellowstone+Wind River Range on the way home. Then several trips to Yosemite. And then more Yosemite trips. I have a few ideas for vids in the near future and AK parks is right near the top of that list. Hang in there. 🙏🙏🙏🏞️💙🫡 thx for watching
I love this tent so hard! I've had a Portal 2 for four years and it's endured 50 mph winds, snow loads and abuse from me. I had to replace a few pole segments when one snapped in high winds (my fault, I didn't pitch it right for high winds) but that was super easy and cheap to do with the instructions and accessories page on the SlingFin website. It's like new. These guys know how to build a tent!
That's awesome! Glad you're happy with yours and I agree, they really do know how to build a tent!
Great vid. Question: Does the insurance you have cover the crazy low and out of touch with reality blue book value or the Agreed Value (replacement cost)? Thanks!
They cover Agreed Value. I did not need to get an appraisal. Only had to produce a list of items which I modified/added to the van and then I also estimated my own time investment as additional cost which they cover.
@@MountainsCallingMe That's fantastic! Thanks for the reply. I will reach out to them.
Good mods. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! 😎
Yup, love my Portal 2! (Backpacking tent for my wife and I)
Awesome! thx for watching 🫡
Thanks alot for a great video. I learn alot from some of your tips. Have you ever done the kings canyon rae lakes loop
Cool. glad to help! I rewatched a few of these videos today and it puts the fire in me to make more. I wish I could just be a full time RUclipsr and devote more time to it. I have gobs of footage collected from this year but not enough time....Im either working or actually out in the field backpacking. 99.9% chance I am out on the Rae Lakes loop as soon as the road to Cedar Grove opens in 2025! :)
Great video. Haven't seen any thing new latley. do you ever do the rae lakes loop
Thx! I been slackin on posting new videos lately. On a 3 month road trip took all my focus for a while. Hoping to get some new vids up soon. Rae Lakes Loop is in my "top list" of places to backpack... it was actually my first time doing it that I learned of the JMT and did it the following year. Have backpacked the loop a bunch of times. Usually twice to three times per year but with the road closure since winter 22-23 I have not been since 22.... I know they reopened it this summer but I was in Alaska. I actually drove to go do it a few weeks ago and only after getting close to the park did I notice signs saying wildfire road closure, so I went up into the Tablelands in Sequoia NP instead. I actually did check NPS website but I misinterpreted that the "Road to Cedar Grove is open" but actually closed part way! doh. I assume you have done the loop? I kinda prefer counter clock wise, but either way is great!
I haven't done the rai lakes loop. Going to try to do it next mid August. Just trying to get back into it. I saw some of your reviews on the slingfin tent. I went ahead and bought the portal 3. Little more weight than the 2 but a little more room as I sometimes go with my brother in-law. They seem like a really great tent. I learned alot by your reviews on them. Especially your extensive guy out video. I spent alot of time in yosemite and sequoia as a kid with family we tent camped every summer in wawona. Did all the hikes but no backpacking. Yosemite falls vernal the mist trail. Half dome etc. Saw some videos recently on the rae lakes loop. Looks really nice. My goal is to do the jmt start happy isles finish mt whitney. 200 plus miles Hard to get the permit though. Have you ever done mt whitney. Love your videos
I am happy you get use out of my videos! I am OCD about guy lines, because WIND is my nemesis lol. 2016 was my first Rae Lakes loop... it was on that hike I saw a John Muir Trail sign and that led me to want to do that. 2017 I did the JMT northbound from Horseshoe Meadows (20mi south of whiteney)... summited whiteney on that trip, and logged about 240 miles total. 2018 I did the Sierra High Route southbound which is mostly off trail but uses some of the JMT/PCT and finished that at Mt Whitney and exited at Whitney Portal. My dream is to some day hike the PCT, but with my job I cannot get that much time off. 1month max, but more than that I would have to take a leave of absence (unpaid). Some day I am sure it will happen. Next year Im gonna be doing a lot of backpacking in Yosemite and Kings Canyon. I dont really know you but maybe you could tag along if you want. I already started getting permits for next year and my default for next year is to just get 2 and try to find people to go with. I got connected with some other hikers in the bay area but havent been able to sync up with any of them yet. for instance I already have 2 permits for April 25, May 2, May 9 in Yosemite Valley...
@MountainsCallingMe yes. I would love to do that in or at the end of April beginning of May. Is there still alot of snow that early. Let me know. I'm a self employed carpenter so I am pretty flexible can take off whenever. I gearing up right now for everything. Sounds fun. I saw your videos on the slingfin portal 2. I purchased the portal 3 And really like it. I also saw your review of the z pack arc 62 pack I'm thinking of getting one. Sounds like it was a good purchase for you. I live in St George ut. So I've done some camping in zion. Love it there. Beautiful. Have you backpacker in zion. Mine has been tent camping in tge park then going on various bikes in the day. Angels landing the narrows etc. Any way let me know. It Would be nice to hook up in yosemite
Thanks for the review. I was in between the cross bow and Windsaber. Didn’t see much online for reviews of the Windsaber and your review helped seal the deal. Can’t wait to use it this winter in Wyoming!
Thanks for watching! Winter backpacking in WY sounds fun! I finally "checked off" The Wind River Range this fall... :)
This doesn't work...
It has worked for me numerous times, before I posted this and after. Honestly 100% of the time I actually needed it to come through, it did. It depends on people actually canceling and you then needing to jump on and snag it quick. If no one is canceling, it may seem like it's "not working"...but the site does work, and they are constantly watching for your desired park+dates. Give it a try in the future. Nothing to lose - its free.
Great mods! I followed all of them. Thanks a lot
Awesome! Thanks for watching 🙏
That's a sick setup but your network costs more than most van builds. You're pretty much a mobile ISP.
Lol. Yeah pretty much a mobile! 😝 Thanks for watching. 🙏
Great review and awesome tent! I think I have a good suggestion to address the through-vent/door-vent direction issue. Couldn’t Slingfin add a second through-vent on the foot end? Then you could pick, choose and fine tune to conditions….. just a thought.
Thanks for watching! SlingFin Tim has watched all my reviews and we chatted over email. He left a comment about 10 months ago where he explains why they placed the thru-vent on that wall. I never specifically called out wanting 2 thru-vents. That is a good idea!
@@MountainsCallingMe 10 months!! Lol. As usual, I’m late to the party.
Going in Feb 1st 2025...first time even seen snow for us...I have already a hotel close to south entrance.... questions for you: chains are for sure mandatory and very likely needed early in Feb? seen some videos and looks not so easy to install, any recommendations? also, I do have gaiters just in case but don't have snow shoes, maybe worth getting some cheap ones in amazon?... planning something light honestly as this: first day getting around 1pm from San Francisco... just planning to do Mariposa Grove trail (again our hotel is very close to entrance)...the short version meaning from parking lot up to California Tunnel Tree then back... maybe not the best use of the entrance money if doing only that? second day would be to go to the actual park and see around.. have really some insecurities, how cold can it be since we are from Costa Rica...very different climate to say the least...
Hello, I have been to Costa Rica twice along the pacific side. Went to Manuel Antonio and Corcavado NP's. Loved it! California law requires all vehicles in the mountains to HAVE tires chains with them. Yosemite rangers will create checkpoints during snowfall where they will not allow you to pass unless they physically see the tire chains on your tires. You will need tire chains that are sized for your vehicle's tires. And if you are coming from out of state you may not be able to buy these in advance. Once you have your rental car you could buy some on your way to the park. I have also seen a person selling tire chains right at the ranger checkpoint. I am uncertain if that person is there all the time so I would not risk it and show up there expecting to buy chains on the spot. The kind I have I bought on Amazon. Konig THULE XG-12 PRO 245 Snow chains. I practice putting them on where the pavement is dry, so when I get up to the mountains and its snowy, wet and cold I am not struggling trying to figure it out then. It can also be helpful to have a small groundsheet (plastic tarp) to put on the ground to kneel on. Your hands will be wet and colder the longer it takes you. The Mariposa Grove busses will not be running in Feb. You can walk up the road from the main parking area or take a trail. If the conditions are nice I'd suggest doing the trail on the way up and walking back down on the road. Your National Park entrance fee is good for multiple days so its no big deal if you only come into the park for 1 thing then leave. I would not bother with snow shoes. They are bulky and heavy. Odds of there being enough fresh powder are maybe 50%. I'd suggest having some Micro-Spikes instead and waterproof gaiters that come up to the knee. Even if there ends up being fresh powder you should still be OK trekking thru it with that setup. More than likely there will be packed snow or icy spots the spikes will keep you upright. I often see people in Yosemite in winter wearing shorts and it shocks me. I assume they are from LA and dont know how to look up the weather. Please please dont be that person! lol. Have several layers of bottoms and tops. More thinner layers is better than 1 really thick bulky layer. My ears always get cold first so I have a thermal headband that I wear when I am active. I'd also suggest at least 2 pairs of gloves. Something thin and light. And something that could layer over that like a mitten. If you forget something, the Yosemite Valley main store does have some items like this to buy onsite but best to have everything before because that isnt guaranteed. I hope you have fun in Yosemite in winter! I love it there that time of year. It can be magical with the snow on the pine trees and white blanket everywhere.
@@MountainsCallingMe thanks a lot and pura vida for all the extra tips mae! glad you had the chance to visit our small land and you enjoy it! highly recomend to consider Bajos del Toro area or San Gerardo de Dota area next time! bet you would enjoy that too...or even Chirripo hiking. close to the dates I will check if this winter will be as extreme as in your video..hope not! my family went to Yosemite this past January late and were nice conditions and did not snow at, guess is true is truly unpredictable...you were there late February? thansk for the tips about the chains and I have put a note to myself to remember bringing gloves if I need to install them + something for the knees too!
You should've told the inspector you had a ubiquity access point. You would've instantly passed. A video on your Network setup would be cool.
LOL. I dont think that dude knows who Ubiquiti is let alone what an "access point" is! 😆 Here is a video I made last year w/ my network setup. ruclips.net/video/HNKKpZDUtnk/видео.html Since then I have changed some things. Reconfigured my access point, dropped the mast cuz I found it was too much trouble and not worth the hassle. Also flat mounted that starlink last summer for full-time always-on setup... and then earlier this year before my big 2 month alaska road trip I added a 2nd flat mount starlink! :) I also covered a little bit of that in my van tour video I did while in Alaska. ruclips.net/video/u_ZM5_jOhVY/видео.html - I will try to post an updated network setup video soon. Its near the top of the list of videos I plan to put out soon.
Have you ever seen the stars from on top of Half Dome? What is your favorite - sunset or sunrise? I like sunrises.
Amazing video, thank you!

referring to the political ad? >>>>>>> this will create socialism MUCH quicker due to the way it will limit and remove ownership.. WHICH IS THE GOAL! Freedom of real estate ownership is the goal of communist creeps like Newsome. Also removing morality puts more and more people on the street who who cannot afford a rental either! Now one thought this was possible? REALLY? we knew you could and would do it..
Thanks for watching my video. I do not have control over what ads are shown during my videos.

I was mainly curious about the number of pole sets and the distance between them, which appears to vary. For the technique coming down, I too feel a bit odd about going backwards. I wonder if a better controlled slide might be done sideways (one foot up the other foot down), gripping with both hands on the same cable. That way you see where you're going, you don't use both cables, and it's less stress on the knees. This technique also could be done outside the cable channel where the granite hasn't been as polished as inside the channel. Question: Why did you ditch the grippier gloves for the leather ones?
Thanks for breaking it down! 🙏🫶 I have done the sideways slide as you describe. It is less stress on the knees and probly safer! Going down facing ‘out’ feels more natural to me. Im sure people who rock climb repel would disagree. Each person should do what makes them most comfortable. I carry the leather gloves on backpacking trips and thats what I was doing. For a day hike I would bring grippy gloves. Better grip and more breathable.
Great mods. I really like the zipper line to pull the mesh inward a bit. I replaced the fabric toggle and loop with Zpacks magnet toggle and it’s so much easier to close especially when your hands are cold. That is a 4g increase per toggle. I replaced the 2mm line with 1.3mm line and saved about 1.2 ounces also.
The magnet setup is definitely better than the classic toggle. I wish all of my toggles were magnet-based. The 1.3mm line should be fine. I do end up having to replace 1 or 2 of my guy lines per year due to the lines getting cut up from attaching to sharp rocks in the Sierra. Ive never had one actually fail in the field, but a few have been visually looking pretty close to failure. I'd imagine that the 1.3mm line is just not going to last as long before needing replacement. But if you rarely attach to sharp rocks then its not really a concern. Or if you carry 1.3mm line for a clothes-line like me, then you could just swap a line in the field if that ever happened. :) Happy trails. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for a great video. I thought the build had to be done by a licensed van converter? If it was a self build what did you put down for labor cost per hour?? Thanks!!
I created a spreadsheet where I captured all the parts cost and then took an hourly rate and multiolied it by how many hours I spent. I sent that file to them as my evidence. You can also get your DIY build appraised. The first option was much easier to get done quickly and get covered for my investment cost.

What is the piece of fabric you are using to kneel and put your pack on. This may seems like a odd questions, but I am looking for a waterproof ultralight small blanket/piece of fabric to put my stuff without it getting dirty or wet! Thanks!
That is a Zpacks Rain Kilt. Its a great multifunction piece of gear. I do not carry rain pants because they are a hassle and make me sweat/wet out from inside. The kilt is much easier to take on and off quickly without even removint my pack! It also doubles as a ground sheet for standing or sitting on as well as a pack cover, small tarp, etc. Highly recommended! When i bought it they offered 2 sizes. I got the bigger option because it is geometrically rectangular which is more useful.
I don't know. I've had ticks on me so many times I couldn't possibly count. A couple months ago, went backpacking/camping, when I got home after a couple days found 12 ticks on me. My wife was a little grossed out, but it all worked out. No illness, none of that. And I live and camp in the Rocky Mountains.
12 ticks is A LOT! Yikes! I have been using permethryn spray on all my clothes since this and havent seen any ticks. I would have serious anxiety if I had 12 on me! Wow! Thx for watching
I've had mine for almost 3yrs now, I still love it. I also have the Portal 1 which is just as great.
Awesome! Thx for watching 🫡🙂
you may have mentioned this.. but is there a benefit to having the big zip external pocket on the back vs a mesh pocket? Or vice versa? Which do you prefer?
I have always preferred the zip pocket vs mesh to keep the contents of that back pocket protected. Also nothing can fall out. The zip pocket is not perfectly waterproof but does give protection from elements.
Great review. Was wondering if you think two people and a 50lb dog could comfortably fit in this tent? Thanks
Thx for watching! I think it would be a tight fit with the addition of the dog. Id want a Portal 3 for that.
I came across this video last year in 2023, shared the video link with my friends, and we were able to camp together on a long weekend. Weve been using this site ever since!! TYSM for all the tips!!
That is awesome! I continue to use this as well. Most recently I camped 3 nights at Brooks Camp in Katmai in July during peak bear watching season using reservations obtained via this method. :)
Thank you for the tip but much more information is needed. I subscribed to notifications from Campflare. Even if I click on a notification as soon as it pops up, I feel I have no chance of being able to register. Before clicking on the notification I have to take a second or two to memorize which campsite is available. Once I click on it, it goes to the recreation.gov site, then I have to choose the correct campground and search for the campsite. By the time I find it, someone else has reserved it. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a faster way to snap up the reservation? I realize that there are probably hundreds of others trying to get it at the same time.
Another great video. 👌🏻
Appreciate that!
Sweet set up Bro
Thank you! :D
This looks crazy
Heck yea! It is an incredible experience! 🤩🏞️
Considering crossbow or windsaber for artic summer backpacking and alpine climbing use. See you reviewed both, thx. How much more bomber did you find windsaber? Windsaber has 7" less length, which is crucial for my long bag, but that vertical wall from extra pole probably negates a lot of difference?
For me the loss of length isnt an issue. The Windsaber is definitely more bomber with the addition of the extra cross pole, smaller vestibules and slightly more aerodynamic shape. That extra cross pole really gives you more interior space which you can sit up in and not be touching the ceiling. For me that added "usable" interior space more than makes up for any loss of length. The doors on the Windsaber you have the option of opening for full mesh. For times when you want airflow, the windsaber has more mesh for better airflow. There are only a few situations where I would reach for the Crossbow instead of the Windsaber. If I didnt already own the Crossbow when the Windsaber came out I woulda just went straight with the Windsaber. A key selling point of the Crossbow is the flexibility to swap out the full wall body with a mess inner body. If you want to have a single system for all weather / all seasons then the Crossbow plus the mesh inner could be that. I just did 8 days backpacking in the arctic circle this summer and these tents would be overkill for what I experienced in Gates of the Arctic. The Crossbow with the mesh inner body would be the best fit for arctic summer. Otherwise you run the risk of overheating regularly. Especially if there is low wind and your tent is not in a shaded area. You will want the added airflow. If you have your heart set on a single tent setup then the Windsaber would be a better choice due to better airflow. It also will fit in more places easier with a slightly smaller pitch footprint with the vestibules staked out. Hope this helps! thanks for watching
I have the olive drab DCF 57L arc zip. It's 10-12 years old and still my number one choice for high sierra backpacking. I switched from a comfortable Osprey Atmos 58L just to try a DCF pack and never went back. Also switched to a DCF tent with similar results. I live about ten miles from Nisene Marks State Park and hike there regularly. Maybe I'll see you there sometime. Thank you for a brief and informative review.
Thanks for watching! Maybe I will see you around Nisene! 👋

Of my opinion, i would suggest, to you people, i need statistics, height, weight and ability, bich bich and moan
Good video ..and the topic was right on point for me ..I have a 2000 GMC Savana cutaway that is killing me on California insurance requirements ..I’ll install a bed structure ..and outfit a microwave and fridge (I had planned on doing that anyway ..) hoping to get this reregistered before the end of the year ..the dmv reclassification seems like it will be pretty straightforward ..this whole thing aggravates me though ..damn this state ..always looking for ways to screw their citizens ..
Dealing with the DMV is somehow always a pain! Thanks for watching 🫡
Halfway your video I got a notif for an opening at Glacier Basin at RMNP from campflare - AMAZING hack! thanks so much!
Awesome! It works!! ✅️✅️✅️ thx for watching 🫡
Thank you for sharing this video. What camera mount did you use?
For this video I was using an Oben CTT-1000 tripod in the side pocket of my backpack. The insta360 selfie stick was extended off of that through some lines which crisscross along the side of the pack and a carabiner attacked to the pole as well. This works pretty well. The tripod is light, but heavy enough to provide enough weight to keep it firmly held to the pack. Thanks for watching!
Way to hard to pick just one!!!!! Each holds something so unique and special!!!!!
There are a lot of great ones. There are also a few not great ones. For me it is an easy choice. My #1 is Yosemite!
Finishing up most of these mods right now. I hit the JMT next week beginning the 24th. These tent mods will be particularly helpful. Thanks again!!!!
Awesome! Have fun on the JMT! I used this tent on my 2017 NOBO
@@MountainsCallingMe I'm SOBO from Lyell Canyon. I take my Duplex on every trip and these mods are a welcome upgrade. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you so much! You’ve saved my life 😊😅
Awesome! It saves my life too! I am at Brooks Camp in Katmai and snagged 3 nts at the campground using this!
