  • Early May 2023 felt like straight up winter! Temps below 20F and and strong steady wind, combined with off and on rain, snow and hail. I was glad I had my Slingfin Crossbow 4-season tent, but wished I had brought a warmer quilt. My 20F Enlightened Equipment quilt was beyond its limits. All that said, I still had an amazing time. This was my 25th visit to Yosemite and my 1st time hiking to the top of Yosemite Falls! It is stunning! Highly recommended!

Have you ever hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls? What is your favorite trail in Yosemite?

Thx! I been slackin on posting new videos lately. On a 3 month road trip took all my focus for a while. Hoping to get some new vids up soon.
Rae Lakes Loop is in my "top list" of places to backpack... it was actually my first time doing it that I learned of the JMT and did it the following year. Have backpacked the loop a bunch of times. Usually twice to three times per year but with the road closure since winter 22-23 I have not been since 22.... I know they reopened it this summer but I was in Alaska. I actually drove to go do it a few weeks ago and only after getting close to the park did I notice signs saying wildfire road closure, so I went up into the Tablelands in Sequoia NP instead. I actually did check NPS website but I misinterpreted that the "Road to Cedar Grove is open" but actually closed part way! doh.
I assume you have done the loop? I kinda prefer counter clock wise, but either way is great!

      I haven't done the rai
lakes loop. Going to try to do it next mid August. Just trying to get back into it. I saw some of your reviews on the slingfin tent. I went ahead and bought the portal 3. Little more weight than the 2 but a little more room as I sometimes go with my brother in-law. They seem like a really great tent. I learned alot by your reviews on them. Especially your extensive
guy out video. I spent alot of time in yosemite and sequoia as a kid with family we tent camped every summer in wawona. Did all the hikes but no backpacking. Yosemite falls vernal the mist trail. Half dome etc. Saw some videos recently on the rae lakes loop. Looks really nice. My goal is to do the jmt start happy isles finish mt whitney. 200 plus miles Hard to get the permit though. Have you ever done mt whitney. Love your videos

I am happy you get use out of my videos! I am OCD about guy lines, because WIND is my nemesis lol.
2016 was my first Rae Lakes loop... it was on that hike I saw a John Muir Trail sign and that led me to want to do that.
2017 I did the JMT northbound from Horseshoe Meadows (20mi south of whiteney)... summited whiteney on that trip, and logged about 240 miles total.
2018 I did the Sierra High Route southbound which is mostly off trail but uses some of the JMT/PCT and finished that at Mt Whitney and exited at Whitney Portal.
My dream is to some day hike the PCT, but with my job I cannot get that much time off. 1month max, but more than that I would have to take a leave of absence (unpaid). Some day I am sure it will happen.
Next year Im gonna be doing a lot of backpacking in Yosemite and Kings Canyon. I dont really know you but maybe you could tag along if you want. I already started getting permits for next year and my default for next year is to just get 2 and try to find people to go with. I got connected with some other hikers in the bay area but havent been able to sync up with any of them yet. for instance I already have 2 permits for April 25, May 2, May 9 in Yosemite Valley...

@MountainsCallingMe yes. I would love to do that in or at the end of April beginning of May.
Is there still alot of snow that early. Let me know. I'm a self employed carpenter so I am pretty flexible can take off whenever. I gearing up right now for everything. Sounds fun. I saw your videos on the slingfin portal 2. I purchased the portal 3
And really like it. I also saw your review of the z pack arc 62 pack
I'm thinking of getting one. Sounds like it was a good purchase for you. I live in St George ut. So I've done some camping in zion. Love it there. Beautiful. Have you backpacker in zion. Mine has been tent camping in tge park then going on various bikes in the day. Angels landing the narrows etc. Any way let me know. It Would be nice to hook up in yosemite
