KLN-89B Approach programming

Chennault Flying Service (CFS) offers accelerated training in ATPs, Multi-Engine add-ons, and Executive Complex and Instrument training. The following video is instruction on how to program our TravelAir's KLN89B for instrument approaches.
Thanks for the memory jog. I couldn’t for the life of me remember how to activate a flight plan. I loaded one and hit the menu and just missed it. I activated the approach since my flight plan had me going direct to the IAF. This was practice only not done during an actual ifr flight
Thank you so much. Very clear and easy to follow
Thanks for the video! I know this was uploaded a long time ago, but would you happen to know how to add a hold to an approach?
Thanks. Simple, Easy to remember
Out of focus can’t understand what’s happening
I've got my PPL checkride Tuesday and my checkride plane uses a 530. I'm not as good with the 530 as I am with the newer touchscreen GTN 650s Thanks for this video!
Thanks.. I am doing my IFR training with a Garmin 430. These explanations really help.
thanks this video allowed me to pass my atp at kvgt way back when.
Thnx dude , this means a lot.
Taking off and landing the same airport?
I made this video so long ago for just a few students, I honestly don't remember. But I suspect yes. It was made just to prep students for an ATP checkride doing approaches at the same airport many many many years ago.
I suggest you dont cover the knobs you are turning with your hand. Important to see which knobs you are turning.
Great point! I made this video many many years ago....no real thought given. It was made for a few ATP students back when we operated a Travel Air. I would like to say I have learned a lot about video making since then, but nope, ha ha.
You hands is in the way man
Like Ricky Bobby, I don't know what to do with my hands
Me, with 260 hours in planes all with 430’s… thank you
Great tips on the 430!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Good information, however, you went too fast. It would be helpful as some of us are trying to take notes. You clearly are very familiar with this procedure - we are trying to learn the concept. Thank you for taking the time for this video.
Excellent! Thank you.
OK well that was a waste
Started out great just build the flight plan as your title says, maybe do another video for waypoints
Nice job… Did my initial flight training at VGT (1993)
Learned to fly at VGT back in 1979. Lone mountain was way out of the city and used as a landmark to tell tower when coming from training area. Fun times!
Simple and clear, thank you! Just what I needed:)
Some excellent information presented here, thank you for making and posting this video! For those learning the 430 I suggest downloading the simulator so you can follow along and practice as needed. You can do a Google search for garmin 430 simulator download or as of this writing I found it here: www8.garmin.com/include/SimulatorPopup.html Peace.
Hand often obscures what is happening with knob twisting / button pushing and without a describing narrative (40% of time) it’s not very helpful.
This is a very helpful video for understanding how to build a flight plan. It would be even more helpful if at about 2:10 minutes you highlighted the fact that you have to twist the large knob COUNTERCLOCKWISE to bring the cursor back to life. You show moving the cursor after you got it back, but you never told us how you got the cursor to reappear on the Create page. It would also be helpful if you also showed how to create a waypoint using a radial and dme, carefully explaining each move of the large and small knobs. It would also be helpful to do the same with an intersection of 2 radials, or an intersection.
I am getting ready for my IFR check ride and have the KLN 89B in my Cessna 150. Thank you for explaining the procedure so well. I need to update the data card and Bendix King states that I need two interface cables and then you can upload it to your GPS however, there is no visible port to plug the cables into the GPS There is an example on RUclips of how to upload the data card out of the plane but do you have any idea how to do it while it is in the plane? My database expired in 2014. Thank you for your help
The plug to update is a weird round plug that looks like a large headset jack. In most installations they are located somewhere else on the panel. It isn't plugged directly into the KLN head-unit. That being said, the King program to interface only works with windows. The other way to update it if you don't want to go to all that trouble (or you don't have the update plug), is take it to an avionics shop. They can usually do it on a bench. I would make a video on the update process, but I installed a 430W to replace this KLN89b a while back. Good luck
Chennault Flying Service Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. Is it difficult to remove the GPS from the panel?
@@tonyzwet nope just a simple allen wrench
Hi daddy
Hey kiddo.
Hello, Thank nyou for the Video. Does the KNS--80 do RNAV Approaches ?
forrester shephard, the kns80 does not. The kln89b can do any RNAV (LNAV) approach. Just no vertical guidance.
Our flight school is switching from warriors to garmin 430s to Cessna with kln 89, very helpful video to help with the transition
very comprehensive! Thanks very much... I started renting out an airplane with the 89... and when you're busy flying... is hard to figure out all the subtle nuances to this GPS .... looking forward to trying this out when I'm up there next! Thanks again
