DO THIS If You Don't Have A Music Director
6. Tacit. Stop playing occasionally and let the music breathe.
@@EdwardJWhiting that’s a good one! Thanks for the comment!
Additionally, worship guitarists also used microtonal bends especially in the mid-2000s. I also noticed that playing lead lines in worship is plainly simple, I practice sweep picking, legato, alternate picking but I only use 20% during worship service 😂 because most of the time during our practice they are all looking at me, telling me to keep it simple and play the lead lines on the song because what I play for them is too polished 😂 and I improvise all the time. They keep telling me to buy effects for ambience, I'm not really into effects but for the sake of worship music I had to. Great video btw.
@@grantspencermusic yeah man, that’s tough. I definitely feel that more as a drummer than a guitarist. I’ve been playing drums for longer and feel more free to improvise and express myself and maybe even show off. 🤫 I’m just not at that level on guitar. But I will say is that can be room even in worship music to fully use your gifts. When I’m playing drums, I want to play things that serve so song and every once in a while, a little flash can serve the song. It just has to be done with extra intentionality. And it also helps if you play 90% of the song straight, nail the parts and take joy in nailing those written parts. And then when you do add something above and beyond the written parts it will feel like a welcome treat. You’re probably already doing all of this but I just wanted to share my approach. Nailing the tones and effects also givens you some “brownie points” (if you wanna call them that) with whoever leads you band. Props to you for sticking in there and making it work even though it’s not necessarily your wheelhouse. We have a player on our team that has been on a similar journey and now we egg him on to play sweeps every band play out at the end of the service, when it fits. Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your thoughts/experiences. 😊
Why does every worship guitarist want to sound like the Edge from U2?????
@@KevinMaillet-z6l funny enough, I don’t really listen to U2. I just think there is an over simplification in the guitar community that if you used big delay and reverb sounds, you want to be the Edge. Honestly, just find the ambient guitar sounds more inspiring. Different strokes for different folks.
Because the tone is beautiful and works perfectly in most modern worship situations. Who would you like them to sound like? 🙂
Thank you for this video. Everything was really well explained. Greetings from Brazil.
@@silviomp thank you so much for the kind words! Greetings for the United States! It’s winter here, is it summer in Brazil?
@GettinBetterWithDave Yeah, it's Summer down here, but not as hot as it used to be, thank God.
@silviomp That’s nice! I’m in Arizona which gets pretty hot during the summer, so hopefully our next summer will be more like yours. 😊
1st step: spend money for a pedal setup.
@@Hicky33 haha hopefully that’s not step one! But even if that’s the route you take, there are more options for players just starting out now than there ever has been. Fortunately you don’t have to break the bank to test the waters with effects. Anywho, thanks for watching!
who wouldnt use the cheat sheet????
@Tennessee_Angling lol noted! I should have that video and sheet hopefully very soon
Video and pdf sounds great.
@@jerrypiatt1105 thank you for letting me know! Should have things put together very soon!
For #2, and if you own a strat. Swap out the bridge pickup to a semour Duncan hot rails pickup and your problem will be solved. It's a humbucker that fits in a single coil slot and only costs $100 for a new one
That’s a great call! Thanks for sharing
Tip #1 .......get a Big Sky pedal
@@n2havnfun2 haha nah, lots of pedals can get there. Thanks for watching 😊
How is this any different from non “worship” techniques? Why separate it?
@@JohnMickevich-im6wj great question! These moves can and are used in other types of music but are especially seen in worship music because of the larger ensemble and the emphasis on dynamics. Also, it’s what I play every week so I feel more comfortable speaking into. Thanks for the comment!
Useful ❤ thanks!
@@vladimirivanov6353 you’re very welcome! Thanks for the comment!
I totally do 5 except I use notes within the pentatonic scale for the key of the song and bounce around on different notes, then I use the sustain feature on my reverb to make the notes go as long as I want and I can have the control of the trail. It really helps when there is a section of time with prayer at the end or where the pastor starts cooking.
@@crappy60 love that! That’s a great move!
I play lead guitar for this church and trust me..Dave is the man!! He is my Yoda
haha thank you, Joshua! You're the man!
So throwing the guitar around my neck and playing with my teeth. Don't make the list!!!
Perhaps if I had made it a top ten! lol
Yes I would use the PDF with all the chords and shapes. Really all of this only helps what I hear. Because I play in a church where the sound guy admitred yesterday that electric guitars are muted. Makes me so mad.
@@tombrackettjr.9308 bummer! If I were you, I’d try to have an open handed conversation about what needs to change for the electrics to be part of the mix. Try not to be upset or offended, I’m sure he’s just trying to do what’s best for your church. Take his input and do what’s you can to improve things, even working together with other electric players to set up your audio engineers for a win. I’ll pray that things go well with your team and that you all get to use your gifts to glorify God! Thanks for the comment! I should have that pdf here in the next few weeks.
Thank you very much for making this video! It is very helpful. God bless.
You're very welcome! Thanks for the encouragement! God bless you!
Great channel! Thank you. Been playing electric guitar for a while in our church. I have a real problem to focus myself on worhiping God. Instead, I am focused on music and what the electric guitar is doing. I mean the time, when I don‘t play myself. Sometime I prefer, there is not electric guitar on stage at all, so I can completely focus on worship
That's awesome that you're playing at your church! Keep working at it, the more prepared and comfortable you are with the music, the more you can move your focus away from playing everything perfect and focus on God and the meaning of the songs you're playing/singing. It takes a while but you'll get there! Thanks for the comment!
I gave up my huge pedalboard with a Strymon Trifecta for an amp with a wah pedal in front. Best thing you can do is learn how to improvise.
That's cool man! what kind of music do you play?
@GettinBetterWithDave I grew up playing metal. I got saved and started playing worship.
No.i will never use a modeler.
haha I don't think anyone saying you had to. What amp do you play?
Because you play acoustic guitar......much better to use electrical guitar with FX pedal - good pedal.....So I have to jump to el. Guitar.
Please make the sheet.
Working on that very soon! Thanks for the comment!
How about we get back to worshiping God in spirit, and in truth. Stop the show, stop the drama music, and make it about God and not a theatrical presentation. How do these five techniques point us closer to Jesus? Isn’t he the goal?
@@jesussavesrick “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.” Psalms 33:3 NIV . Yes I want to worship in spirt and in truth. But I would not be honoring the God that has given me everything I have if I don’t practice and prepare and bring my very best to him, it’s not about performance or perfection, it’s a sacrifice of praise and I want to given him my best. I want to help musicians have tools to be more effective in their roles on teams and bring their best to the feet of Jesus. David also said he would not offer a sacrifice that cost him nothing. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”” John 13:35 NIV Let’s get back to loving each other even if we worship in different ways. But thank you for watching my video.
make the pdf
Will do!
Hi I have the same sansamp pedal I’m trying to get a good fuzz sound preset have you managed to get one on you’re one ? Or do you only use it for clean and get another pedal for that ? Just seams a waste to have three switches and only use one
Hey there! I don't like the way the sans amp breaks up on high settings. I originally bought it for the same reason as you but I much prefer dirt and fuzz pedals INTO the sans. which is kind of sad but I really like the clean to edge of break up sounds. When I was still touring, I used it to dial in two different basses. For now, only need one channel but I've had this pedal for so long, I don't want to swap it for the single channel. Thanks for the question and for watching!
Bro this video is excellent! I ALWAYS have a capo on my electric (I play a Les Paul) and playing in open-position C and G shapes is pretty much where I live. I would add just a few comments as to other little bits that tighten up our worship guitar playing. For one thing- arpeggios are perfect but less is more. Ever listen to Andy Summers of the Police? Three note triad arpeggios- brilliant voicings- tons of space. Yeah, everybody wants to sound like The Edge in U2 but go back to Andy and listen to his chord voicings and his glorious use of space. Secondly- don't forget to use the TONE KNOBS on your guitar. Strats are versatile and I played one for 30yrs but didn't understand what a truly versatile guitar sounded like until I started playing a 'Paul. Two pickups, two volume knobs, two tone knobs and endless possibilities and sounds that mimic everything from rumbly, organ-like dark tones to muted flute sounds. And every electric guitarist should have a compressor for those clear tones. A compressor focuses and broadens our modulation effects and is pretty much essential for producing those ambient tones that are so popular in worship music these days . . . Anyway . . . Dave . . . great video and solid instruction . . . Blessings 2U and yours . . . 😎
Aw, thanks so much! Thank you for the kind words. and great additions! Blessings!
Let’s go Dave!
Hey Bro! It's been too long!
Im so happy. I go to a spanish/english church. I get to play about 5 different styles of mexican music. And when i play in English i choose to play country, jazz, or bossa. The best two parts are 1) i get to solo in just about EVERY song (mexicans love guitar solos, or "requintos" (not to be confused with the 3/4 scale classical guitar known as a "requinto")) 2) we filter out all the lame english contemporary music....if i happen to play any of it, i just jazz it up or just try to make it any genre possible besides "christian worship rock" We dont all worship U2

I'm getting more of a Joel Osteen vibe from this, where i was hoping for the George Beverly Shea of guitar
@@guitarjoe7394 I’m gonna be honest, I’m not sure what meant by that lol. I just play guitar here. 😂
Watch the video for the guitar is the best way to make us watch something 😅😂
😁 I wonder how many times I can use that one! haha Probably just once right? Thanks for watching!
i play a strats, and always make sure the bridge pickup is that little bit hotter.
You are a legend for that! Way to use all five positions. I need to get a 3 P/U guitar again and when I do, I'll make the bridge hot as well.
I’d be a little careful copying the melody if there are only a small number of musicians.
Good point! It differently depends on your band size. Our normal line up is drums, bass, keys, 2 electric and an acoustic. So there's a lot of coverage. but even in a smaller band doubling a melody if just for a moment can be a cool move, I'd just use it sparingly. What does your band look like? Thanks for the comment!
So I figure, about about 35 years ago that the western Protestant "hierarchy" decided that they needed to dumb down modern worship and praise music. Especially when very talented and creative musicians/guitarist started to fill worship "ministries". In the mid 90s people/Pastors where telling us we were taking glory away from God and making the focus about us. Thank God for Vineyard at the time. Young Christian musician just play what sounds good to you and from your heart to God. there are NO RULES!
Good reminders! I believe it actually goes back further than that. A lot of the hymns were written to the melodies of drinking songs of the time. Crazy! But the goal is the same, help people focus on God even if they aren't musically inclined. Thanks for your incite!
Killer content! I’ll be sticking around. I think a lot of people find themselves in a position where they are fully committed to worshipping, but our balancing full-time jobs, families, and life. Honestly, honestly, we just don’t have the time to devote all of our attention to becoming professional musicians But I think everyone has an opportunity to invest enough to become a proficient musician I like how you talk about this too, we add tools to our skills so that we can play where the Spirit leads us
Absolutely man! We all have stuff going on, it can be hard to find the time. But how we use our music time, and how we practice can make a huge difference. taking an extra 10 minutes a week to try and add something to your vocabulary can put you in a place were you feel more free and expressive on stage and you can take those cues from the Spirit. Thanks for the comment! I'm stoked that you're part of this community!
@@WesIncredible that's the main problem with church worship, in my opinion. You have very few whom have actually grown up playing music and want to play for the Lord. The majority are just people with little to no experience that decide they'd like to be part of music worship. Do they have talent or any actual musical skill? Usually not. Do they or will they ever practice? Probably not. Do we let just anyone with little to no preaching/theological experience go up on stage and deliver the word? Absolutely not. ...so why do we conform to do the minimum when it comes to worship? 🤷🏽♂️ is it because as Christians we want to be nice and involve the congregation? Again, 🤷🏽♂️
Just found this channel, great video! I’ll definitely be back to watch more!
@@BlakeCraft thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! I’m stoked that you got value out of it.
As a sound guy, I love when guitar players use the available pickup positions to mix themselves. If you are playing single note "leads" while the vocalist is singing, it's a great time to do it on the neck pickup as the rolled off high end places it behind the vocal where it belongs. Great video Dave.
For sure! That's a great way to not get turned down by your audio engineer. 😁 It's great if you have am A1 that you can talk about what you can do from stage to make the mix stronger. I'm lucky to be able to do that every week with our production director.
@GettinBetterWithDave or worse, turned down and not turned back up later. 😉
Only just come across this channel... Can't wait for that video!
Very soon! Thanks for watching!
Aside from worship, I primarily play, or at least try to play, prog/djent/death metal/etc. I’ll say worship songs are simple but not easy to play well. Also, I believe context is needed as well. Are we talking pro type environment with an MD? Or is it your typical setting where having a music stand is no big deal and being pretty okay is good enough. The range between those two is pretty vast, I’d say. In either situation, no beginner, as someone erroneously stated in a previous comment, would be able to do those well. That’s why they are called beginners.
That's so well put "simple but not easy to play well" I love that. It's awesome that you play heavy music as well. We have a few guys that are in a metal band but play with us on Sundays. For context, our church sits in the middle of those extremes, funny enough. We have 2 staff worship leaders and 1 staff MD (myself). On a weekend we normally have between 1 and 3 of us staffers on stage and everyone else is volunteer. And those volunteers range from folks that have only been playing a couple years to people that have been playing their whole life and could be contracting at any other church. All of them our loved and supported by our team and are very bought in to this community. In reference to this video, over the years, I've seen it go both ways. newer players that don't put the time in to getting it right and instead get bored playing their own stuff and seasoned players that play other types music outside the church and look down at the simplistic approach. For me, the sweet spot is finding joy and nailing simple parts and adding your own flavor but in a way that serves the song and doesn't come off flashy.
I have been looking for your videos (how to: worship guitar, and everything else) for YEARS! I'm so glad to have found your vids! However a slight bit of a critical suggestion for you to consider.... Change the name of your Chanel to something containing (worship guitar). I believe I would have found you much sooner.

What a terrible guitarist relying on effects 😂😂😂
Let’s be honest, nobody cares about your opinion.
@@rockychieng88 easy fellas. There’s a lot of different kinds of players out there. I’m definitely a fan of ambient guitar sounds that you just don’t get plugging straight into an amp. Room for all kinds of players, the important thing is that we keep growing and making music.
But for what it’s worth.. Hendrix David Gilmour and the Edge all used effects, I’m cool being on that side of the fence 😂
#6 You can move this shape anywhere and it will fit any song, lol. E-x, A-5, D-5, G-2, B-D, E-x. It's a Dsus4, but you just let your middle finger on the B-string take you to wherever you want to go. It's way overused.
