Beginning Artists-Don't Think About Style

If you're a beginning artist, don't think about a particular "style" to paint in. Learn the design fundamentals and begin to implement them in paintings - many paintings. Painting Light and Shadow Shapes

Painting in only two values - in this case the value of light and the value of shadow - gives you lots of practice in making good shapes for your paintings. Shapes are one of the main building blocks of painting design, and it takes lots of practice to get good at making them. I usually paint buildings for this type of exercise because I find good shapes in them. I go in depth on this topic in ...

@@kristih2825 Kristi- happy it was helpful - thanks for watching!
I really appreciate your shade. Having to justify your value as an artist beyond a viewers experience always feels like BS.
@@CaptainPainJr yep.
The paintings I bought are on a canvas that’s like half an inch thick, so this wouldn’t work
@@johnnyroc no it will not - this is for paintings on paper.
You mentioned that you could also just gesso the back of your painting? Can that be done to a finished acrylic painting? Would really appreciate your help with this question.. I have a finished commissioned piece that needs an opaque coating on the back and I don't want to damage it. Thank you
@@thomaustin4270 sure you can gesso the back - it won’t damage anything
This was helpful David. Thank you!
@@MelissaJohnson-c3p you’re welcome, thanks for watching.
I know it’s not good I wish I saw this video before. I love drawing but every time someone in social media just out does me which made me to strive and get better. I guess that’s why I got a lot better and social media did actually help with choosing an art style but I loved this video. ❤️🩹
Have you experienced the gel medium drying completely on the paper or board before affixing them together? I was adhering a large painting to a wood panel and by the time I got done putting the gel medium on, the first half of the application was dry to the touch. I have an even bigger painting that I want to adhere to a panel and now I'm nervous about that happening again. I would love any suggestions you might have for this.
@@kimknollart I have not experienced that, but I live in a humid climate. My guess is your studio has dry air and it makes the medium dry too fast. It could also be the you are applying it too thinly on the surface. You may be able to add a retarder of some sort to lengthen the drying time.
thank you. I really needed this.
@@catincj5162 you’re welcome! Thanks for watching.

Smooth yes, for me it didn’t have enough or frankly any tooth.

I have a passion for painting red rock scenes, but I'm having trouble with color blending. It would be really helpful if you could show me (and others) the colors you are using to achieve the look. I've tried all kinds of combinations of colors but I just can't seem to do it right. I paint now with acrylic paint -- I'm totally new to acrylic painting, as I've been doing pastel painting for 5 years now. Thank you for sharing this video with us all.

How long do you allow the thick textured gesso to dry be for painting over it?
@@raefield4583 usually over night
Wow, great lesson, I had no idea about this.
Nice. Thanks as always David.
Thank you for your generosity I have heard of some of these classic compositions but without seeing examples. Your work is really great.
We're strange us humans, we think everything must have a practical purpose..........there is literally no 'use' for painting, none! When I'm painting however, often times I find myself wondering if my work is going to be any good for someone to hang up. I like videos like this to remind me not to think about the result but enjoy the process. Overthinking is my nemesis, thanks for this video 👌🏼👌🏼
Dean, you’re welcome and thanks for watching.
Thank you
Very helpful. Thanks
I've just watched a video by one Dianne Mize (I may have got the name a bit wrong) which insists that Ultramarine is cooler than Prussian Blue; she takes yellow, ANY yellow, as being warm, using a version of the colour wheel which she's taking literally; but it isn't laid out in any logical way.... what effect this has on actual painting I'm not sure.... but when I suggest students take a look at RUclips for guidance, I do need to be a lot clearer about those to whom they should pay attention. Dianne is saying the exact opposite of what you're saying, and in my opinion - she's totally wrong. I wonder what effect these opinions have on actual paintings - do you think it would make a real difference, one way or the other?
Robert, I’m not sure what effects it would ultimately have on paintings. What I have presented here are generally accepted as universal principals about color that I have gleaned from others over the last 30 plus years - these are not opinions I have made up. Some others will have different opinions, as they always do. Thanks for watching.
Use or recycle large, used plastic jars or buckets stuffed w tightly rolled up newspaper, junk mail, rags, etc. coming out the top like a funnel. Pour the dirty water down the top of the roll which will capture both the dye colors and solids, and helps wick and evaporate the water. Replace crumbling paper (or whole container) as needed, throw discards into landfill trash as normal. This will keep the more toxic or deep staining pigments like the Thalos out of your sinks and water treatment plants.
The painting behind you is GORGEOUS. Thank you for all the tips!
Great video. Very helpful and informative. You provide the broader perspective right up to the professional grade filtering system.
Thank you sir.
William, you’re welcome.
I had been using it for art for about a month or two ish b4 i found out it was toxic! I even put it on my skin! I wish they put it on the bottle. I dont know what i should do.
I have it on my skin all the time - I just don’t leave it on for too long. Don’t worry - its not toxic like uranium or anything. Using it for painting is what its for, just use common sense.
Thank you !
Thanks very much for your video and pdf! ❤
Wendy, you’re welcome.
Damn it, the fingers are the best
You’re telling me! I use mine all the time when painting and I don’t like to wear gloves. I just try not to leave the paint on my hands for long periods of time.

Hello question!! Can one use acrylic gesso for oil paint
I assume you mean can you cover a canvas with acrylic gesso then paint over it with oil paint. Of course -you just can’t do the opposite.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 thank you yes sir that I what I meant. Another question can I use the Utrecht gesso and mix it with a color gesso (Michael Harding non absorbing primer) will the Utrecht gesso turn the color of the the MH primer?
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 I know nothing I am ignorant to painting. But I know I want a color gesso that is thick

@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 thank you! Also you work is beautiful thank you for all of the information you provided!
David, a question for you. The painting behind you seems to have violet, but there is no yellow. Or maybe it’s blue, but there is no orange. Definitely has warm and cool though. Complementary colours are not mandatory then?
Sharla, that painting is an analogous color combo of violet, blue-violet and blue (analogous colors combos are 3-5 colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel-and probably my favorite to use).
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717ah yes, I learned about that at some point, but haven’t put it into practice yet. I appreciate you answering thank u ☺️

First wipe the extra paint off your brush. Then rinse the brush in a cup of water. Then put the dirty water into an empty milk/ pain container. Let the water evaporate. Dispose of the milk container.
