@2:07 ...I don't mind that recapitulation in F# - having first heard it played in C!
No... Emin has the same vibe as Ebmin if a band just tune half step back for a live show.. relates to the steps of the movement between notes, not a single note itself, even more because tuning was not always standard...
Wow! Excellent analysis,,,
I have a color AND shape for each note based on how I hear the texture or the notes (and chords). I'll give you my list of majors. Also, a good way to look at it it general is that all of the black keys sound harder, and less removed from the physical. I called these the Complex Keys. The white keys, on the other hand are more grounded and generally of more personal (and less cosmic). // But, anyway, here goes. C = warmth. weighty. best for love songs. // RED C# = same warmth, but active. imparts movement. key of vigor. // BLOOD-ORANGE D = a more internalized warmth. digestion. happy & joyous, but also melancholy. compassion. // ORANGE Eb = bright and piercing. key of discovery. // GOLDEN-YELLOW (yellow-orange) E = pure luminosity. light of Christ. key of awareness & consciousness // YELLOW F = smooth and open. but also woody. nature, plants, and growth. // LIME GREEN F# = the first cool key (as opposed to warm) and it sounds wobbly, twangy. when the V note is added the "vigor" of F# as a chord sounds like a choo-choo train. G = fluid, smooth, flowing. key of release. letting the tears fall. key of communication (we generally speak to each other in G, as a casual exchange of ideas.) Throat chakra. // AQUAMARINE/TURQUOISE Ab = cold, distant, like a twinkling star. Key of death, estrangement, isolation, self-reliance // BLUE A = metallic, grounding, somewhat flat and hard. but also expansive, as if that horizon is opening up. Can be very gracious or "epic" in sound. // BLUE-VIOLET/INDIGO Bb = piercing, but far-removed. as if watching someone ELSE being pierced, not yourself. Like Ab Bb is distant and far-removed, but it exists it's own space. Instead of the "twinkling star" effect of Ab/blue Bb/purple is the universe. But university OUTSIDE of yourself. Bb is the key of dreams & wonder. The repeating octave motif in Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination" is a B-flat note repeating. B = transparent softness. membranes, but also spirits and ghosts. The Ghostbusters Theme was written in B-major. B, magenta in color, ends the spectrum starting from middle-C/red. Magenta is the end of the rainbow. The end of the line. Ab/blue is like physical death, whereas B/magenta is more like a passage into the netherworld. My work on this is here at: - _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
Absolutely makes a difference what key. This guy's a idiot
I've been to concerts where I've heard a song, and thought it just sounds off for some reason (even though there was nothing technically wrong with their playing) ? Then, I RUclips the same show and realized they played it in a different key than the original. Even though it really shouldn't make a difference, it does seem like some songs just sound better in a specific key.
Nice example about the open strings of the violin. The same is true for wind instruments: although I don't have perfect pitch, I definately can recognize some notes on recorder or oboe (f, bes for example), just because they are unique in it's sound.
Before watching, here are my thoughts: in the modern era of 12EDO it doesn't really matter that much. Back when instruments were tuned differently, it would have mattered a lot more as different keys would have slightly different intervals. But I think it still does matter somewhat, more in the texture and feel of the instruments and singers involved. But it really depends on the instruments and singers and C minor on a clarinet doesn't have anything to do with C minor on a guitar
@@The_SOB_II let me know what you think after!
@jakethurston-doublebass I think you covered this incredibly well. My grandmother taught me that f sharp was a more dissonant key when I was young, and I always doubted it. I eventually learned why I was basically right, but if I'd had access to this video I would have learned a lot quicker heh
Excellent and concise explanation. I play with guitarists and yes, they want E or A or D etc. Throw a Bb or Ab at them and the ain’t happy
A FLAT MAJOR IS THE PRETTIEST FIGHT ME ON THAT
I don’t know why, but the key does matter, I’ll bet it has something to do how the melody relates to the key
And electronic music is constrained by the range of sound systems (i.e. subwoofers) and of human hearing itself. Many cannot accurately reproduce below 40 or 30 Hz (or cut below that entirely!), and sounds have almost no timbre that low.
I get it now.
😊
What a smashing little video - so much, explained in such a short time, and so clearly and simply.
Caff, I think he's wrong. You may want to see my work here concerning note coloring (and even shape). _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
c major - gay and warlike
There is one other thing to consider for people making music on the radio which is that if you make songs in a key nobody else ever uses like Eb minor, it will sound a little jarring after people just heard other songs in a common key (like A minor), which could maybe get their attention
Sympathetic resonance of open strings is so important, if you play an acoustic guitar in Eb or F, it sounds completely dead because none of the open strings resonate sympathetically, thanks for bringing this up.
Mine is tuned to D standard so F is great for me lol
is war gay?
NGL this is just a good video.
This is fascinating how different people react to different keys. A minor is my least favorite key. I like very few songs/pieces in it. It strikes me as from cloying to abrasive. You put a clever trick at the very start when you lowered the pitch of Mozart's music to F major. It is originally in G, although tuning standards varied quite a lot when he composed it, so they still could've played it in G though it sounded like F does to us today.
Bravo brother 💪🤘👏
I still don't understand the concept of key! Music theory really is rocket science... It is all Greek to me!!
C is gay
Maybe it doesn't matter if you're in the same key through the entire song, but what if there is a key change within the song? or multiple changes. Try doing something that sounds like modulation inside of one key.
I have perfect pitch, and I will comment that different keys have PROFOUNDLY different emotional characteristics to me. This video highlighted for me that for most people, key is often a writers consideration for more fluid performance, which is useful information as a writer myself. Good video.
Does a recording tuned to 432 Hz have profoundly different emotional characteristics than one tuned to 440 Hz? What about the same song played in different keys? If I played you a song in A half sharp, would it be more emotionally similar to a song in A or B flat? Not trying to be facetious just genuinely curious. 🙏
Well, since all of the composers describe each key differently, I think it's ultimately a personal preference. I, for one, can tell when a recording is not played in the RIGHT key, but I don't know what that key is. I don't know what that "talent" is even called.
Interesting and enjoyable video. But Dm is definitely the saddest key though.
Does the Key of Music Even Matter? Not for rap/hiphop artists
2:35 - Remember also that there were _many different_ well-temperament systems, each with slightly different flavors for each key. Bach probably used one of the Werckmeister or Kirnberger temperaments (a lot of historical debate about that). As a general matter though, most of those well-temperament schemes don’t sound _wildly_ different from equal-temperament. If you’re used to equal-temperament, and you to hear a familiar piece in a well-temperament, it won’t be anything like somebody bashed you in the head or anything! Your reaction is not likely to be “I’m confused; what the hell is going on here?!” Most people would barely notice or not notice at all, and well-tuned and knowledgeable ears will wrinkle their foreheads and say, “what’s going on with the tuning here?”
all the musical conventions should be redesigned because this system is unnecessarily complex and terrible.
What about piano they do not have advantage in any key right in term of mood like violin does in d major or cello etc. but i see a lot of pianist talking about key. And how it differs in mood.
At least there is still a difference in feeling when writing music in major vs minor keys. But my favorite music always has out of key accidentals that somehow work with the piece and those songs always have a very distinct difference in feeling to a song that is composed always staying in key. I think this is a way we can still create different feelings with equal temp. It's more about how and where you are reaching into other keys and how it works with the primary key of the music than it is about the key itself. At least with the music I've worked with it seems to be like this.
Different key centers do genuinely have different feelings for me. C major, D major and Eb major are totally different in terms of mood.
I really doubt advanced violinists use the open strings that much.
Did you transpose your 18th century examples ? Since in eg. Bach's era, the key referred to as a C would nowadays be known as Bb (according to modern standard of tuning)
Totally matters to me. Vocal range, familiarity, and ease of reading. I have the ability to tell what note is being played on a saxophone by its timbre.
I really appreciate all the hard work you put into this, this is incredibly helpful for me as I go through this book. Thanks!
Those are great points, but I think it's missing the most obvious difference between keys, namely that our ears percieve frequency. Even if you don't have perfect pitch, the same song will sound different in a than in d simply because it's higher. If you were to transpose Metallica up by a fourth or something, it would sound weak or shrill or weird, not because a guitar can't do A minor as well as E minor (it can), but because our ears "want" a certain balance of frequencies.
There is one thing in digital music that makes a difference and that's revolving around our own hearing range. Having a bass down at C0, you likely won't hear it but moreso feel it with a decent subwoofer. Bring that up a few notes to say E0, and it makes a bit difference because now you can hear it much better. If it went down further, the song may sound empty or lacking bass which can give it a different feel. However, raising that C0 up an octave can give a different feeling.
Ty
Dammit. I already knew the conclusion and hoped I was wrong. But still learned some new things in the process. Damn you.
As someone with perfect pitch, this matters
I'd love to see a string quartet using flawless microtonal beauty. A new composition .
Keys are good for learning an instrument. As opposed to subjective bluffers who hope something sticks to the wall with habitual guesswork
Yes, the key absolutely matters because the color of a melody is affected if it’s too high or too low for that particular melody and/or harmony/counterpoint. Not to mention the vocal ranges of any singers.
So why is it that when I listen to music in a different key I feel less pleasure? And it has tones that fit better with the music
So why is it that when I listen to music in a different key I feel less pleasure? And it has tones that fit better with the music
I actually used this video for vocal warm up... Nice job though 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think you're all a bunch of liars. If this were true my farts wouldn't stink. The reality is my existence is worthless and I've decided to die. So now you know and I don't care which key it's in because I'm going to play everything in the key of fart.
