Actually, you have Northern Ireland backwards. All of the island of Ireland of Ireland was part of the UK (sore subject for many). The Republic of Ireland became independent.

As a child i remember seeing Vulcans high in the English summer sky's always on alert for the call they we're an amazing sight.

During WW2 and the "peaceful" invasion of Iceland, there was a British plan to do the same to Norway and Sweden but the Germans invaded Norway first so the troops were diverted to help defend instead. If Iceland had fallen to Germany, that would have been an ideal location to support their U-boat fleet instead of having to risk returning to ports held by the Germans in Europe. A considerable number of U-boats were lost trying to make that run back to base. When you consider there was a period of time German soldiers on the eastern front during winter had higher life expectancy than U-boat crew as average life expectancy for U-boat crew was as low as 60 days, if Germany had invaded and secured Iceland for u-boats, things could have been far worse for the merchantmen who were already being terrorised.

Vulcan pilots and copilot had upward firing ejection seats. The three rear crew were expected to make 'manual' escapes out of the entry door using their back parachutes.

There is another video by thIs same guy about how it was very nearly the RAF given the job to drop the nuclear bombs on Japan rather than the USAF. Which is something I'd already read about but am surprised more people don't know.

Vulcan ejector seats went upward & took the canopy with it.Pilot & copilot were ejected,the remaining crew went out via entry hatches.

I love that senior US military officers refused to accept they had been "done" by the Vulcans until photos proved otherwise.The 2nd time the RAF landed one Vulcan in New York...... proof didn't come any clearer than that. RAF 2.....USAF O. 😁

Just a snippet of info.. Roy Chadwick didn't lead the design team for the Vulcan as he was dead before it ever got off the drawing board. Chadwick's successor was Stuart Davies along with Roy Youens actually take the credit.
