Navigating Healthcare in Mexico as an Expat
In this video, I share my personal experience navigating healthcare and health insurance as an expat living in Mexico. From exploring public options like Seguro Popular and IMSS to choosing private insurance, I cover what we've learned since moving here. I'll talk about the costs of doctor visits, how we handle prescriptions, and what it's like to pay cash upfront for care. Plus, I'll share insights from fellow expats on Medicare, the ACA, and emergency evacuation plans. Whether you're thinking about moving abroad or just curious, I hope this helps you understand the healthcare system in Mexico better. Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more expat insights every Wednesday!

    I've been living in San Antonio Tlayacapan (near Ajijic) for nearly 7 years. I bought a home here and paid US$380,000 for it. With all of my monthly costs, I spend ~US$ 3200 and that includes food and wine, which I have delivered every other day, and everything else. I do not cook. And you get used to it, just like anything, or you feel paranoid.. Another feeling, I don't believe its an ego trip, as much as its a survival instinct.. I can't give you your 9 minutes back. Hopefully you got *some* entertainment? All that aside, the comments on this video there's a wide range of folks with different experiences on pricing in Mexico that hopefully helps. For where I live, groceries tend to be on the more expensive side, sometimes more than we paid in the states. I think it's for a couple reasons - our location on the peninsula and also b/c there's an expat community here that, unfortunately, drives the prices up. Our cell service, we didn't change at all. Still using Verizon so that cost hasn't changed.

It takes time to adapt, and worst case find out, that this was the wrong city, or country, or maybe a part-year overseas schedule would be better. A conservative approach is don't burn bridges, rent first, try different places, figure out language and shopping, meet and learn from other expats. Hi there. Am I? I just defaulted to saying expat. Looking it up, an expat is "an individual living and/or working in a country other than their country of citizenship." An immigrant is "a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country." Huh. So maybe I'm both?

      When my parents moved to the US from Mexico, they were called immigrants. I don't see any difference. You are an immigrant to Mexico.

    • @blennie83
      @blennie83 20 дней назад

      In my experience, the distinction between expat and immigrant is about class and privilege. It's often related to the power relationship between the country of origin and the destination. An American moving to any another country, whether to retire, teach English, or work a high-powered job, calls themselves an expat. But someone from, say, Pakistan moving to the US or Britain, whether to teach, work in a restaurant, or join a high-tech firm, gets called an immigrant whether they like it or not. Regardless of the dictionary definitions of ex-pat and immigrant, "immigrant" carries some negative connotations that come from citizens of wealthy countries fearing immigration and "immigrants." If you search on immigrant vs expat, there are a lot of interesting articles about this issue. It's been the subject of ongoing research, confusion, and hostility.
