    All I have to say is...Merle Hazard's Gimme Some of That Ol' Atonal Music is really the best thing that ever came from atonality. I would argue that evolution in music is essentially destructive. They abandoned counterpoint almost entirely because it boxed you into a corner where you have to compete with Bach. They abandoned the structures of classical to get away from Mozart, etc etc. Creativity requires space, and getting restricted to the same rules your predecessors followed means you'll be making their music all over again. With the rise of expressionism in art, some world wars, and trying to get away from the most insanely high level execution in music, I could see how we got to 12 tone rows. As for people who like it? Masochists. I can pretend I like Free Jazz for about 3 minutes and that's my limit. That said, I was reading CPE Bach's book the other day, and he was casually introducing 3/4 chords. We would never be able to deal with that today. Maybe all harmony is a big lie. Actually pretty cool piece at the end! And Van Halen for the jump!

    Ok, adding the pulse width modulator was fantastic. No idea what I would use it on, but that's got some drama. Really interesting the difference between 1 and 7hz, and there are kind of fascinating relationships between the speed of the pulse, the width of the pulse, and the tone produced. Gives me something to think about. Thanks for showing!

      @arryaxx263 25 дней назад

      @@amberelmmusic I've done a little thinking about what's going on here. This is all conjecture, but does your oscillator run at C4 by default? I slowed the video down to hear what's going on, and it's playing the equivalent of swung eighth notes at quarter note=480bpm(ish). That would mean that the 'quarter note' is hitting 8 times a second, and the VCO is 'beating against' the LFO 16 times a second, but at a seemingly swung beat...I feel like this should be regular, so maybe it's the mathematical difference between pitch of the VCO and the LFO that causes that? Maybe it's just an encoding thing from RUclips? I've got nothing. haha It might also make a really cool instrument also to move the VCO and the pulse width LFO against each other as you rise in pitch, almost like turning off keyboard tracking on a filter. Anyways, sorry for the essay. It's really interesting!

    after the 3 min mark, you have a synth pad sound, what are you using to create that, and how is it looping?

    • @amberelmmusic
      @amberelmmusic 27 дней назад

      It’s just the VCO in VCV rack outputting a sine wave. Im playing it polyphonically. The way to do that is to right click the Midi to CV module and change the number of polyphony to however many voices you want to use (in this case 4). It’s not looping, I’m playing it on my midi controller (off screen). Hope that cleared it up. Thanks for watching!

  • @arryaxx263
    @arryaxx263 28 дней назад

    That was pretty informative. While I know the basics just from knowing synths, this had a lot of stuff about modular I didn't know. Thanks! One question this brought up, but...if I set an LFO to something like 1hz and modulate it with an audible wave, then it becomes that note with some weird beating, but I'm wondering what happens if we do that with an LFO that is a square wave? FM enthusiasts want to know!

    • @amberelmmusic
      @amberelmmusic 27 дней назад

      Hey there, good question! I would take it from like a pulsating beating like you said, to more of a harsher, clipping sound. I was trying to figure out how to explain it, and it sound like a helicopter a little. It gets interesting when you take the LFO frequency up about 7 HZ. It makes a really cool tone. Let me know if you want me to make like a youtube short demonstrating in VCV rack. Thanks for watching and asking the question!

    Thanks for the the informative video...I need all the Taiga tips I can get at this time. I've resisted the temptation of any form of modular (until now), due to my fear that I would be sidelined from my compositional 'workflow' with too much 'noodling'. I finally caved in to buying a Taiga a few days ago thinking that it would be a fun & compact thing to do on the side with my old sampler. Oh well, that didn't last long...it's now a fully integrated piece of my setup. Guess I will be doing a bit more 'noodling' after all. The good thing is that there's a surprising amount of stuff that can be done on this little box alone. Just running it through the Eventide Space is quite an experience. ...There goes my 'workflow' lol.

      Right on, the interface doesn’t actually need a midi in and out but just audio outs. You can change the outputs in Logic to send it to the pedal then the out of the pedal into audio inputs and record the synth. It’s best to do it on a bus track so that you can keep the midi recording, and have the audio from the pedal. Does that make sense?

    Firstly thanks for posting your videos. The one about Arvo Part was great as he is an influence, as well as Britten. Of course there are many others that you have posted as well. I have been trying to get my head around Modular Synthesis and, for me at least, a real struggle to get to grips with it as a rank beginner due to the technical language it embraces. As you know there are many tutorials “for beginners” but in nearly all of them that I’ve seen there is the assumption that the viewer has a grasp of even the most basic fundamentals which would defeat the idea of a beginner video. For example I teach drums and If I stated talking about subdividing the eighth notes on the hi-hat into sixteenths and suddenly introduce an alternative way to play it by splitting that subdivision between the HH and snare whilst ghosting the notes and bringing your hand over to play the snare on the 2 and 4 It would just confuse the hell out of the student even though this is a basic and common approach to playing drums. If you could nail that “real 101 beginner” approach to learning VCV rack then that would be just pure gold to literally thousands of interested people. With all due respect to those who really know their stuff, and there are several, in the modular synthesis area they sadly still miss the basic gift of imparting their wisdom to the uninitiated embryonic student. Just my pennies worth. 🙏

    Alright, but who is Amber Elm ? Nice ambiances and atmospheres in what I have heard so far. I, too, am a big fan of Moog’s Subharmonicon. I started a small YT channel with a similar scope myself, nearly two years ago, when I first dipped my toes in Modular synthesis (I used to be more of a stage musician). This came as a self-assigned personal project that I focused on in order to fill up a year-long bed-ridden recovery process I had to go through after a serious medical accident in 2020. As this was about electronic music and given that, as a dad, I am contractually obliged to reach a yearly quota of dad jokes, I named the whole project “my electro-therapy”. 🤡 But my YT channel is just pretty pictures with synth music, with none of the interesting insight you provide here from a “back-stage” perspective. I will be happy to hear some more as you post. See ya !

There’s definitely a place for things like the microcosm but I like that it’s simple. Thanks for your feedback.

    I'm a little sad we didn't get a 'jump around' cut to the song, but you've got to do what you've got to do. What I want to know is how you've managed to get that same nice bright color scheme on so much equipment! It looks fun, though. Are you working on anything specific with it?

      I’m pretty bummed I didn’t add it too. Haha. It makes me happy that you like it. Im working on an album right now so it will be nice to give it some color with this thing. Thanks for watching!

    A nice run through thanks. I particularly like the diffusion settings on piano....I may add it to the list of potential gear for the future 😁

      Thanks! And your welcome! I was surprised how much I liked some of the settings that I thought I would blow right over (like phaser, or howl) almost EVERY SETTING is usable In some way.

    I have two m32's since their release, then I grabbed the dfam, then the sub, the sub without a doubt was the weirdest out of the set, i just didn't get alot of really cool stuff from it, especially the poly rhythm area, it would often seem like an unstable clock source was driving the sequence, i even contacted moog to double check it wasn't broken. I kept it and it's in the rack, but I just dont know how to get it to sound very appealing musically. I just got spectravox too, which is another kind of different type of device, but even spectravox is useful and easier to put to use. The sub's subhamonics are handy, but the poly rhythm can get really messy quick, especially if you use more than 2 rhythm dials. Now, i feel like playing with it but in my opinion the subharmonicon is definitely a strange instrument.

    If you dig this, go watch the "what even is Ambient Music" video THEN watch/listen to this again. Totally changes it. Top notch.
