Great review I have the RX1R OG version. Lots of character compared to other cameras. Makes you slow down and enjoy shooting.

The rp is impressive compared to Sonys camera in the same price range. Which is the a7ii. The comparison to a7iv is the r6ii. It actually didn’t crop in 4k. Or maybe try the r8. Same features with only one card slot and same small battery. But trying the rp is the cheapest way to see if you vibe with canon for sure. I noticed I edit colors less on canon but miss the megapixels of the 7iv.

Low light dynamic range and way more flexibility in post. I'd go Full frame.

the eos RP is just the cheapest modern full frame camera... not more...

The major difference is when you print your pictures out on a printer, the Sony is far superior. I have both these units and prefer the RX for taking photos.

These two cameras are designed to do different things well. In my mind the RX1R is a great, small, photography camera. The RX100 vii is more of an all around athlete capable of performing well (not great) in a number of different areas. There are situations where a smaller sensor camera can produce results on par with a full frame, which I think is the point of this short, but there are some pretty sizable differences between these two cameras that have been grossly over simplified that play into producing differing results. Naming just a few: -RX1R mii: 42 MP full frame sensor vs Rx100 vii: 20MP 1 in. sensor -RX1R mii: 35mm f2 fixed lens vs RX100 vii: 24-200mm f2.8-f4.5 zoom lens -RX1R mii: 1/4000s max shutter speed vs RX100 vii:1/2000s Those are quantitative measures. In terms of qualitative the fixed Zeiss 35mm f2.0 full frame lens fit to the RX1Rmii is regarded as one of the sharpest configurations out there. It is head and shoulders better than the RX100 vii in dynamic range, low light, high ISO, editing raw files in post, and cropping into the 42MP images. It is a small camera, so controls and handling are not fantastic but still much better than the RX100 Vii. One of the biggest minus’ is its cost. The cost for even a used model now 10 years after it’s release rivals many contemporary cameras that have more advanced technology and sheer performance. The RX100 Vii will do way better in terms of auto focus speed, color science, minimum focal distance, getting you range from 24-200 mm, 20 fps burst shooting ,video (hand held stabilization, 4K video, slow motion 960 frames/s, & sound quality from microphone input), better battery life, touch screen focus and shooting, and it is smaller and lighter. If you care for the best photo image quality at 35mm and have the money for it you may appreciate the RX1R over the RX100 vii. For a better overall shooting experience with an all in one type device the RX100 vii is a better selection.

AD200PRO key and V1 for fill for me. AD300 is bit overkill for me personally. even V1 by itself could get the job done but then you may have to work with longer recycling times.

As a canon rp user with a rf 24-70L it's not a bad entry level camera it held me down lve shot some great photos with it. Now looking to level up but stuck between staying canon (r6ii) or going full out Sony a7iv or the a7rv at a good deal...

If you look closer on the iPhone, the bokeh is fake and processed. Just doesnt look natural imo

picked a used one up today. For a 10-year old camera it sure holds up well. I'd say the autofocus beats some current brands that released cameras in 2024, Looking forward to using the camera

The whole battle smartphone vs camera falls apart when you watch all those photos on a computer screen. I've deleted all my smartphone photos. The only time phone is usefull is when I'm in a store and don't know which toothpaste and tampons to buy for my wife so I take a pic to ask her via WhatsApp.

Not even close. The rx1 (or rx1r or rx1rmk2) are the still the best image quality you can get in that size and it has an insanely amazing lens on it which is the main appeal, a 35mm zeiss sonnar. The fullframe sensor obviously adds to it but the main appeal is the lens.

I am definitely Dumber for watching this.

Is it easier to shoot in dark surroundings this way? I'm just getting into fotography and know that this sony got quiete some problems there.

Nowadays some phones beat clearly the sony with their principal sensor, like the Oppo Find x7 ultra or the xiaomi 14 ultra. But they still cannot compete when zooming. There the difference is huge.

Sony just did a re-release of this camera on its Canadian Sony website. And I was able to buy it brand new! What a sweet camera. I've been doing photography since the 1970s! Having a camera like this is just the best thing to have with you. If you're interested in getting one of these, at least in Canada, you can put your name in to be alerted when Sony does a release.

What’s the size of the filter for the RX100 VII? I think it’s 52 mm, but I’m not sure…

i am really disappointed by apples inability to beat even my old rx100 mk3. pro max 13, 14, 15, now i’m on 16 and colors are still garbage on iphone. portraits come out with weird colorshifts, ofter to the yellow. camera often makes picture super warm in a cold lit room and photos are always inconsistent. sometimes color is correct, move the phone a bit and it’s suddenly totally off. computational photography my ass.

I appreciate your take, I was trying to decide whether to buy a portable camera such as the Sony or maybe purchases some assessories for my iPhone 15 Pro Max to up the capabilities. I still don't know the answers but I am definitely walking away with more knowledge than I had.

Then it comes to the satisfaction of shooting a photo and process of doing it.

that kit lens is holding you up. i got the ef 24-70, rf 50 1.8, rf 100-400 and rf 100 and the result is amazing.

Sorry in advance for this post getting a little long...... I have an RX100 vii & an iPhone 12 Pro. Taking video inside my house after sunset using only whatever lights are part of the house, ie - not using any additional video lights, the Sony is much much better than my iPhone 12 Pro. The Sony's low light video performance is really good compared to my iPhone. This next thought is purely personal opinion - I feel like the Sony can be configured to deliver a more natural look whether taking photos or making video. I agree that a smartphone is super convenient when it comes to quick snaps, tweaking photos/videos and sharing those. Despite this, the extra time & effort to use the Sony is no big deal to me. I've been shooting with DSLR's for a long time and enjoy the experience of handling a camera. One thing that has been bugging me about the Sony is that when using the 10 second self timer to take a selfie, the Sony locks its autofocus when pressing the shutter button to initiate the timer (when I'm not yet in frame) rather than like the iPhone does - the iPhone locks autofocus at the expiration of the self timer & when taking the actual photo (and I've had time to get in frame).

I appreciate this video! It worked like a charm. I just had my windshield replaced last night and had no backup camera after they drove off. I think the hammering of the technician on the wiper arms to remove the cowl hood may have triggered the aftermarket camera module to glitch. This saved me the trip back to their shop. Great information!!
