Breakfast With The X-Men! Uncanny X-Men #337, Joe Madureira & Scott Lobdell, Marvel Comics, 1996
I had a flashback when I first saw this. I was excited to see it on the comic book shop shelf. I don't get that a lot these days. Greg Capullo has always been great. Fabian Nicieza could really bring it too, unlike the most recent "cable" 2024 issues. I have to downsize my comic collection soon, and parting with some of these Greg Capullo X- Force issues will be hard to do.
It was revealed in issue 73 that Stryfe was behind the Camp Verde situation
This was probably my most anticipated comic. I recall that it was delayed several weeks; which made it even more enjoyable once it arrived.
Great video, this issue really foreshadows Dark Knight and Sin City both thematically and visually. The sparse scenes in the hospital and the final panel in particular are very Sin City. I've enjoyed your coverage of this first Miller run on DD, thanks!!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
The best X-Men comic that John Romita Jr. has ever drawn! Love the hologram that Marvel did way back in the 90s!
Great work by JRJR indeed!
Classic cover!!
@@dannytarver4533 It’s an excellent cover. I think Jim Lee tried to one-up with his cover to X-Men #5.
Silvestri is tha MAN! Man the FEeoing! Dan Green! The Colors! 9:40 I see Kubert in this one.... Joe Kubert. From Joe...To Dan and Marc.... and Back to Adam Kubert. Evolution!
@@dariostabletopminatures Interesting Kubert call!
Obe of my first Hulk Comics! Dale Keown delivers 11/10!!! Glynis!
The title had a great creative team with Keown and then Gary Frank.
@comicsbazaar4508 yeah Gary Frank! Man!
I used to Hate Alan Davis... his Art didn't do it for me. But know it ages somehow like fine Wine.
Nice, Dario.
I always thought I was the only one that didn't like Alan Davis' pencils. This is an awesome cover though a classic. Some of his more serious work is good though
@dannytarver4533 when he came Back to the X Men... I missed Madureira and thr Kuberts. Alan Davis Apocalypse The 12 and every ISSUE Building up to that, made me quit collecting X-Men. The Art was Lackluster, the Story too. On Wolverine Leilil Yu ruined it for me with his lifeless drawings. Writing, drawing and producing Comics is hard work.... BUT a bit of Love and Life would have gonna a Long way to Enliven it again.
best uncanny xmen, all goes downhill in the 2000s
Some weird stuff happened in the 2000s.
The giant next to the Fred Flintstone is based off of Ed Brimly. Wow that brought back memories as that was a Saturday morning cartoon of the period staring a pointy-haired eccentric character who raves about his love of paprika.
Oh cool! I thought that character looked very specific and must have been a reference too, but I didn't know of what. I don't think the character made it to Irish or British TV.
@seancroft7939 Before Ed Grimley was a Saturday morning cartoon, it was a character Martin Short would occasionally do in skits on the Canadian comedy sketch show, "SCTV".
@ Great info!
Love this comic my aunt bought me this and it came with a wolverine action figure
@@rudawg1442 That’s really cool!
I love how much characterization are in the Claremont issues. It's so cool how he has characters deal with past events that he himself put them through.
Agreed!
SPOILERS: I´ts a shame that the Creed´s plot ends in x-factor 130. All of the building of this story was made in x-men and uncanny x-men and it was intriguing, like a spy story in x-men! and this is an outstanding issue that make me belive that x-men stories were great again. But then, after the events of x-factor 130 everythig ends suddenly and there is no consecuence. I mean, yes of course the consecuense is Zero Tolerance, but what happen with cannonball? what happend with the reaction of the humans after what happens to creed? What about all the political drama. Fells like a opportunity wasted. Great video!
Good commentary, Diego. I think some explanation is that Bob Harras went from being group editor of the X comics, to being Editor in Chief of Marvel, AND Marvel filed for Chapter 11 after Christmas of 1996. Sales were going down, including for the X comics, and there was a push from the moneymen to editorial to sell more comics, and maybe a storyline concerned with political drama and quiet human moments just wasn't what was required in a moment of crisis.
@@comicsbazaar4508 Yeah, Bob Harras is responsable for a lot of... questionable things!!! 🤦♂
@ 😅
Fantastic art of course and Claremont on top form here. 8 team members in this era and it's hard to give each one some purposeful time within this story but he does well (64 pages helps) while lesser writers would probably struggle. I particularly like how the team is scattered through the nine worlds of Asgard showcasing the marvel version of Norse mythology for readers who might be unfamiliar with Thor. Good stuff and great review as always.
Thanks, Mike!
@@mikedavidson974 Great point at how well Claremont juggled the large cast. Each team member has their own unique story, and each react to their time in Asgard very differently. That's no easy task. As you said, Claremont was in top form.
Your comments reharding the cover looking murky, I think apply to some of the interior art as well. Art Adams is one of the best, but the level of detail sometimes doesn't work with the size of the panels. I'd love to see this in an expanded size artist edition. This chapter of the X-Men's adventures in Asgard is my favorite. Anyone who didn't read New Mutants because "it's a comic about kids" missed out on some great stories.
Arthur Adams was producing super detailed art in the era of cheapo flexographic printing, which meant that his art never reproduced well in the finished newsprint comic. I think we see him respond to that over time as his style becomes a little less detailed. In the 1980s and 1990s, the best way to appreciate his Marvel art was always in the early collected editions when the better paper stock showed off the details better and Marvel had access to quality copies of the art rather than having to scan the newsprint comics, which is what happens these days.
Lobdell and Mad at the top of their game with these issues
They were in synergy indeed!
What a COVER! JIM LEE brought the BIG SCREENS to COMICS! Great Feat!
Agreed, Dario!
I hate those bold black outlines. I also hated black and white manga books I just had no interest in them. I'm just locked into a spectrum of like John Byrne to Jim Lee. That being said Joe Maderara has a stunning quality that is equal to Jim Lee! It's like it looks like a simpler style but it's not. I had this book I love the cover. I love his work in the Phalanx-Covenant I love the storytelling here in the flow of the art with the story I love that there's some politics.. thoughtful storytelling here. Story and art are completely in sync. Issues like this one are what have kept me engaged, and kept me into reading comics, and supporting this industry.
You're spot on, Sean: the story and art are in sync here. Lobdell and Madureira are working very well together by this point.
This issue is so relevant to our current social and political landscape!
Some of the analogies are interesting, indeed.
A Hulk review was a nice surprise. I was really into this Peter David run of the Hulk. Dale Keown's art was fantastic, as was Gary Frank's, who followed Keown. I was also reading Peter David's X-Factor run, but even so, this crossover seemed a bit too forced to me at the time. I think I would have preferred the story if it had been entirely a Hulk story, or entirely an X-Factor story.
I love this portion of PAD's Hulk run too, Paul. I know some people don't like the Professor persona, but that's my favourite version of the Hulk. It's funny about the crossover because you could just read the Hulk issues, the 3 parts of "War and Pieces", and skip the X-Factor issues altogether, and it's kind of vice versa with the X-Factor issues, which could be read without the Hulk issues. It's a crossover that's self-contained separately in both titles.
@comicsbazaar4508 The merged persona opened up some interesting stories. And the threat behind that was the idea that we didn't know how long it would stay together in a healthy way. Heroes Reborn would force Peter David's hand on that. He's a talented writer though, and was able to make the best of it.
@ I was going through my collection earlier today to find my Heroes Reborn comics, and I stumbled across the Heroes Return mini series, which PAD wrote. He had the last laugh there.
@comicsbazaar4508 Since I wasn't into Image, I didn't have any interest in Heroes Reborn. The concept didn't appeal to me. But I thought Heroes Return was an excellent re-focus for the titles. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Fantastic Four and Avengers....all received top-level talent. Only one FF book, only one Avengers book. It was a renewed look at the heart of the characters, stripped free of the 90's excess and gimmicks.
@ Yes, the Heroes Return titles were excellent, including especially the excellent first three issues of FF by Alan Davis and, of all people, Scott Lobdell.
I really like that interaction between Gambit and Iceman's dad. You mention there's some foreshadowing for the upcoming reveal of Gambit's secret, but I would have expected that to come out between Gambit and some other X-Man talking about Bobby's dad. There are some characters I struggle to imagine doing every day things and talking with every day people, Gambit being one of them. Having him have the conversation with the actual man makes Gambit feel like a more full character. Good job to Lobdell on that.
Excellent commentary on Gambit!
Love this channel, takes me back to my childhood
Thanks, Danny!
I always liked this version of Mad's Storm. Sam was given a big jump backwards when he joined the X-Men. While leading X-Force he was strong, smart, and learned new things about his power. He'd grown up. This was a great issue. I'm digging out my collection once I heal up. Great video!
Thanks, Danny! I hope your recovery continues to go well!
Amazing work, different diverse faces indeed
Indeed!
I loved that damned gun though
😅
those guys nailed the detail in the flashbacks, even the onomatopoeia "tok!" in that panel was exactly like in bws weapon x. luv these guys.
Good observation regarding the sound effect!
Was revisiting this video because I just re-read the issue, and noticed there were timestamps/chapters to this video, something I've not seen elsewhere on your channel. Was this a one-time thing? :P
I didn't do that, Ciaran. I've noticed off and on that RUclips adds timestamped chapters to some of my videos after some time. The first time I noticed it was in relation to the very first video I posted. I'm guessing there's some AI program they could be testing that does it. I receive no notification from RUclips that it's been done to this or that video.
@comicsbazaar4508 Wow.. that's really bizarre. And quite intrusive, I imagine
@ I don’t mind it all. I would like to know which videos it’s been done to and why those ones and not others. I’m curious about it.
I like these comics a lot, even if this is an unpopular opinion I guess. The weapon X miniseries is honestly more cohesive, but I still like the entertaining mess about Silver Fox, Maverick, etc
@@josesarango3408 So far, this is good. Maverick is not. 😜
@comicsbazaar4508 🤣🤣🤣
What’s with the smiley face on his boot
Which boot? His left boot?
@@comicsbazaar4508 well his right boot, but the one on our left side yeah
@ It’s a crease and blood stains, no?
Nah it’s a blue smiley face on the tip of the boot
@ Now, I see it. No. That’s the blue background, with the ground as the mouth/smile, and the flare of his left boot looks like an eye. It’s a duck-rabbit thing.
wild!
Thanks for this. I read this back in the day and still think it ranks as one of the great crossovers. Everyone always wanted to see the X-Men go up against Alpha Flight, but they kept it interesting here by having them team up and fight each other. They were true to pretty much all the characters, both X-Men and Alpha, even the more complex ones like Northstar who is one of the real good guys here. Loved that Puck used the classic Bob & Doug McKenzie line to tell Loki to beat it. As a ten year-old this complex, morally ambiguous story was both thought-provoking and entertaining, and it's really too bad that kids these days can't just go down to the 7-11 with 75 cents and pick something like this up.
I'm glad you enjoyed re-visiting it! It was great value at the time, and no ads too!
I had this story in the Asgardian Wars trade paperback back in the early 90's. Along with the New Mutants special and annual 9 it was a great read containing fantastic art.
I am going to do the New Mutants special next, Mike.
@@comicsbazaar4508 great news!
I did like the redesigned Spider-Man costume that Ben Reilly was wearing around this time :P (I think this was published the very same month they killed poor Ben off though!) I like how J. Jonah has been appearing in these issues of X-Men as a pretty great supporting character opposing Bastion and OZT.
I knew someone would like it! Also, I missed that this is Ben Reilly. This is a case where a caption indicating that would have come in handy.
Oh wow! Thanks Darr, I totally forgot about this issue. I love the Scarlet Spider,he should've stayed that way. Lol what happened to image inducers? Scott's been in Remy's closet. Very much Silvestriesk but good. This is when Havok was boosted by Dark Beast and got his own book. Did you ever read Mutant X,what did you think if you did? I'm still catching up on your videos after my hospital stay. Always great!
I did read Mutant X. I liked it at the time. Some of that was because I liked Tom Raney’s art. I also thought the writing was decent by the mysterious “Writer X”.
I had to trade paperback with an incredible cover by Jackson Guise. I know I spelled that last name wrong. I have a facsimile of this now which I'm thankful to get my hands on. Impactful storytelling at its finest. To me personally this is the standard by which other books should be measured... Story wise. It's quite brilliant...
I have that same TPB with the Guice cover, and that’s how I first read this story.
I had and lost this book I hope to get my hands on it again... I didn't recall Spider-Man being in it. . I had the one with him and marrow on the cover. So I had stopped collecting after issue 300 basically... And have been jumping back on and off ever since... And withn the Xbooks and so many titles.. even now I buy back issues and I'm all over the place... But I care about storytelling and continuance. On the same token I like new incarnations of characters revamps... I'm happy to revisit this period I missed out on a lot of great storytelling. I'm happy for a lot of the great books I get my hands on today in the dollar bins.. and key books I can get my hands on. As I've stated before I love stories that involved the greater marvel universe, and the characters who inhabit it J Jonah Jameson.. more well-known now from the Spidey films. They definitely got him right in the films.. so much fun to have a little intrigue involving him in an X-book. He has journalistic integrity. It's also interesting now post speculator boom.. what image did and what marvel was doing.. what stuck ,and what came and went as a fad aesthetic wise. I love the cover of this book.. really pops! I love beefed up Cyclops.. it works for this time period.. it's less jarring now because you see actors in films do it all the time. Spider-Man in an X-book is always fun!
I was trying to think about when the X-Men last tangled -- ho ho -- with Spider-Man, and it's the Kulan Gath two-parter from UXM 191-192 and then Secret Wars.
Great review as always! Intriguing storyline nice subplot... The Marauders hiring someone to kill mutants .. makes sense and is disturbing. Yeah I had part 2 of this book when it came out.. I didn't know what was going on because I didn't have this part. A villain with artistic sensibilities I love that.. I like Al Milgram's inks on Jim Lee's pencils. I love Castles all business mindset.. whether it's a human or a superhuman. My introduction to The punisher was the issue where he gets tangled with the Reavers over in Punisher(another rare occasion that has anything to do with the X-books. I like the stories here and there that shows he exists in the greater Marvel Universe. Wow Jim Lee can draw motorcycles better than I ever will. He was perfect for this series for his technical proficiency.
Yeah, Sean, it's intriguing the connection with the Marauders, which in this era they're supposed to be free of Mr Sinister after Inferno, except, of course, they aren't because he's not dead. So, Sinister is ultimately Bushwacker's employer here until he's hired by Kingpin. Wheels within wheels. And yeah, Jim Lee draws a mean motorbike. The man was, haha, firing on all cylinders in 1989.
is this the Richard Bennet from Brass? Also, its incredible how Capullo was just a great artist from the beginning. Like, on the seventh day, God made capullo and he's been a constant ever since. Lucky BAARSTARD!!!!
Yes, it's the same Richard Bennett!
So, I've always found it really weird that Rachel Summers' costume during this time was just a black leotard and legwarmers. It's like she was perpetually just getting out of an aerobics class.
Totally true. The two teens, Kitty and Rachel, both have abysmal fashion sense in this era.
Good art, i think i prefer the earlier Silvestri art on the title with his spotting of blacks, in contrast to the Jim Lee influence. I think its another aspect from Frazetta's art particularly his pen and ink work
Interesting! I was thinking more about it afterwards. If you look at the way Silvestri draws Wolvie in, for example, 31 to 34, his physique is influenced by Mignola's version, whereas around now, his physique is influenced by Lee's version, very particularly Lee's Wolvie in UXM 271.
Beautiful art
Agreed, Greg!
Do you know who chose this line-up? Was Peter David handed the team from editorial, or did he choose from available characters?
I did a little digging, Paul. PAD was assigned the team from editorial. Nicieza and Erik Larsen made a pitch for the book that included Havok and Polaris and other different characters, and it appears that their pitch prompted further exploratory work by them that included the team as per issue 71. But Harras opted for PAD and Stroman over them, and Harras told PAD to retcon Byrne's reveal that Lockjaw was a mutated, intelligent inhuman rather than a pet.
@comicsbazaar4508 Thanks for that info. I'm currently reading the Epic Collection of the Abnet/Lanning Guardians of the Galaxy. That Guardians run, forming a team of underused or forgotten characters reminded me of this X-Factor run, which I really enjoyed at the time. There's something amazing about being able to pick up characters nobody cares about, and craft some great stories which bring them back to the spotlight. I had overlooked Guardians at the time, but it's great fun. The second Epic Collection volume is coming out in January, and I'll definitely be grabbing that. Similar to what seems to be your preference, I used to always hunt down the original issues (and I still do in many cases). But since it simply wasn't possible with the very early Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, I've recently been appreciating the ease of the Epic Collections.
Excellent review. I had just returned from my local shop with Wolverine 45-49. Great timing
Nice! That's synchronicity!
