*My reason why I don't collect anything: The memories they bring back are too sweet, but never the real sentiment. There is nothing in the Universe that will bring me back the real instances of the toys I played with , the hockey cards I unwrapped, the model planes and tanks my dad bought and gave me. All collecting does is reminds me that time is passing by without mercy.*

I needed to hear this at 35 but I’m getting better at getting less of them every year since 2020 and 2021. I was supposed to start in 2024 but social apps showed me pics of up coming figures and it started all over. I actually want to start a break after the last figure ive been waiting all year to comes out in December. But my plan is to go cold turkey in 2025. I don’t want to sell but to put them away I’m hoping to sell them when I get older. Reason for the break to save money and not spend it or atleast spend it less and less

This has been building up inside me for quite a while. I’ve only been collecting figures for almost 3 years. 4 years ago I made a playroom for myself to chill in you know a mancave so to speak. I only had the occasional collectibles from collectors editions of games and maybe 6 statues of marvel comics. I said why not get some figures instead since I enjoy posing and taking the occasional photo. Well it got out of hand eventually. And it’s not that I’m ignoring other parts of my life and I’m pretty good economically but subconsciously I always thought that you know all that hard earned money maybe at least some of it I could just save for the future. I decided recently to only keep half or less of my collection and only buy another figure of a character I enjoy if I sell my previous. Kinda like upgrading but not expanding. I’m 30 and will start a family soon and I want to be a good example to them. Collecting is nice but the addiction is real. Also the smaller the collection the more precious they feel. Thanks for the video it’s very awakening.

Am I like the unicorn of toy collectors? I’m fortunate enough to make enough money that my questionable purchases don’t affect my bottom line or my ability to pay bills and do what I want, I only buy lines for a select few IPs, I maintain a healthy social life. Depression and negativity stem from other things lol. I love the social aspect of collecting, meeting other passionate fans, comparing lines, discussing new releases. “You cant take it with you” Literally everything in life is like that. Why wear good shoes, why renovate and improve your home? If material items make you happy, why is it bad to be happy before dying? Someone criticized my toys while they have art sculptures and whatnot adoring their home. They are the same thing. Junk that only has as much meaning as you attribute to it. To each their own and every situation is different, but I feel like issues from other aspects of life are using the collection as a scapegoat. A healthy social life and collections aren’t mutually exclusive.

Thank you so much for this Video Vimal, I just realized that i was like you too. When i was a kid i don't have many friends and i like to stay at home most of the time and due to that i started collecting toys and these toys somehow making my days better or as a compensation for doesn't have many friends, that feelings were real! i believe you bro. As i grew up my toys collecting hobby become an addiction and I spent too much money and time on the toys instead of doing the REAL THINGS IN LIFE WHICH I SHOULD BE DOING! I lost all the good times which i should be with my friends and family due to having to safe all the money and spent the time to find all the toys i needed. Your video here is really a wake-up call! Thank you so much Vimal really a good video!

I've collected all my life but, as an adult collector for over 22 years. I have lost the love of collecting because of what the industry has become. It used to be fun, searching for an item off Ebay and trying to get the best deal. There is just so much oversaturation and they just keep putting out the same characters just in different lines that it started to lose its appeal. I believe FUNKO changed the industry in mostly a negative way because of how much they "over did" so many characters and so many lines. I have often thought about downsizing my collection and just keeping a small amount of stuff. Sorry to hear that you are giving up the hobby but, I totally get it. I think the newer generations are no longer going to buy the toys and stuff that we played with as children and collected as adults.

Thank you for sharing this very personal video. I'm 24 and a Japanese man living in Japan but I found this video super educational. I collected lego Star Wars and Gundam model kits until recently. However, I decided to stop collecting them. I will occasionally buy ones I really like, but only like once or twice a year from now on. Buying toys can generate joy but it only lasts about 30 min. I will start collecting Warhammer 40000 and some trading card games, but I am gonna keep in mind not to hoard them. I will do these hobbies at a sustainable level. I realized my passion was creative writing, and that will be my primary hobby until I die. Warhammer 40000 and trading card games will be occasional hobbies that I will not main. Have a great day!

I think the problem is that it’s a never ending hole. Theres always another one you like and want. I think a good way to enjoy it and not go too far is to set a limit on how many you can have and if you want another then you have to sell one to take its place. If you struggle with that then yeah it’s certainly an addiction. Ive had this experience of collectors guilt in past and its always when im investing too much of my energy into it and while it can be enjoyable at the end of the day it is just plastic and there’s more to life than toys or any other material items we collect. Great video

Everyone knows if they’re an addict. Myself, I am not. Not every figure needs to be bought. You don’t need to complete an entire toy line when some of the figures might actually look horrible. For example Gwildor from vintage Motu.. I think the figure sucks and I’ll never own it. I only collect vintage stuff with the exception of a couple things. The things I own I liked as a kid and I like today. The completionist mind set is a bad one to have when collecting vintage figures. That’s my opinion. Collect how you want but if you are filling your shelves with random toys just to have them then you have a problem.

I never got action figures or cool superhero statues when I was a kid. It's very expensive in where I live, I always wanted them but my parents weren't willing to spend that much on a toy. My love for comics and superheroes stuff never stopped so after I got a job I was able to afford some action figures and it made the inner child in me very happy. I don't have a huge collection like many people do. I have a collection that you can hold in a standard cardboard box. Some of them are expensive and I do not regret buying them because the kid in me loves it. Even my GF tells me if I like it so much then buy it because you can't buy it when you are old. I don't consider myself as a collector because I do not have such a huge collection. If you like certain characters , just buy 1 figure or statue of that certain character and just buy the best possible one with the budget you have and do it patiently. Trust me there are really good deals out there for these figures. So be patient and buy a good one. Don't buy the same character again. That's kinda how I satisfied myself. That's how I made a very small collection that I really really love, there are no extras or anything that I feel like was a waste. I suggest trying that.

You got your inspiration from the Bible, no? [Matthew 6:19 KJV] Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [Matthew 6:20 KJV] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [Matthew 6:21 KJV] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. I was into collecting comics and cards into high school. But friends weren't. We went to watch movies and baseball games but they weren't into collecting as much as I was. And if there were people into collecting in high school they were thieves, people would want to take advantage of you as I was trying to sell off my extra cards, double from packs. This is where my friends and I went into different directions. I use to walk with my friend in one direction to the bus stop until I discovered there was a comic store in way the other direction of school. And my friend would get upset when I ditched him. Long story short when I turned to God and started reading the Bible I put all this aside. But eventually, gradually I went back into it. Ebay partly caused me to buy and sell cards online. Otherwise the only other reliable options would have been to sell them back to stores and conventions which would cost you money renting tables. But then my interest died out. Another thing about the entire Science Fiction is that we've been programed when we were kids to watching cartoons, collect toys and so on. And whether it would be cartoons or comics there is a progressive move to liberation. I was collecting Transformers comics from IDW and they introduced gay robots(!?!). I mean male and female robots weren't strange enough...Plus there is witchcraft and Kabbalah attached into the narratives as I came to realize. And there is an end time agenda to join man with technology as the entire Transformers and perhaps other toy lines like Ironman are promoting which will lead into the Revelation 13:18's mark of the beast (microchip? Luciferase?). Plus writers like Allan Moore from Batman's comic books claim to channel spirits for their inspiration.

To much of anything even something as innocent as collecting toys can be bad and unhealthy . If we ask God for guidance in our lives he will put everything in perspective correctly. Of course he wants us to put him first and then our family and other people friends and new acquaintances . But I will say with confidence that he cares about the small things in our lives even something as simple as collecting a vintage toy that reminds us of a special time. Today I'm fed up with toys. Instead of collections, I think realistic and mature. you don't play it? why did you buy it? if it's just for display, just buy a display. You know, ultimately the reason you buy a toy in the first place is to play with it. and the term collector is just an illusion. because you won't play them all.

But I work with a guy who is obsessed with collecting figures and comic books etc. He is crazy and has no room for anything and keeps collecting and sometimes two of the same thing. He literally calls me a disgrace to collectors and I am like whatever. Im an artist and maker and if I want a specific thing I can make it. Being an artist is so much better than being a collector.

It’s a shame to hear your story and happy it has received so many views. Collecting should be a hobby that enriches your life. But I can imagine how fast it can become an addiction instead of a hobby. I wanted to collect MP transformers for a while, because they were finally making figures that looked like they came out of the cartoon and have complicated transformations. I finally found time during the pandemic. It has cost me a lot of money, but at 40-45 it was now or never and I can afford it. During my journey I did caught myself buying stuff I had no affinity with and overpaying for scalped figures. To keep the hobby controllable I decided not to overpay on top of the retail price and first ask myself if I feel emotion with a character. For me that’s the way to keep it fun for me. I don’t gamble anymore, don’t drink alcohol, smoke weed or other drugs now and I think it balances out any other “hobbies” For me collecting has given me inner peace to the frustrated child in me. That loved the toys, but couldn’t afford them at the time. I hope everybody finds that balance and not let your hobby become an addiction or become a priority instead of just plain fun. I still work hard, spend time with my family and feel more complete.

I re-opoened my youtube account which was closed for nearly 5 years, just to comment on your video. I was close multiple times to opening up a Comic book store because I had years of experience in working with media (real media like a News station) 20 years ago, and also working in retail management. When one day, I looked at one of my Marvel action figures thumbtacked to my wall and thought to myself, "Why do I like this?" Then I realized the truth about these items. 1). Someone came up with a story and made up a character, someone so cool, they were a god (lowercase "g") in their stories. 2). Someone designed the image of this fictional figure, making it a real life "hero" in their life of loneliness, confusion and worries about the world. (hence cosplay, massive collecting). 3). Someone would get paid to print the best image of this fictional non-breathing character and print it to a piece of cardboard. 4). Plastic would be holding the plastic figure inside. Then what... what do you do next? Will it take care of you, I thought? Will the toys bring real joy to my life? Would I be able to do this forever? When will "enough" be? 'Til I can't afford my storage unit(s) anymore? I came across a video on youtube that helped and I hope you'll watch it and help you, too Vimal. ruclips.net/video/c3KwDXoq29Q/видео.html

I think the memories we make and the people we meet in our collecting journy will stick with us forever, not the hundred or maybe thousand of things we collect. At the end of the day we like to collect, but when it takes over the biggest part of your time or life, maybe we have to wonder what the purpose of it is and if it truly makes us happy. A few months ago, I was starting to get interested in collecting figures. I was constantly watching videos about them and checking online shops for what they had in stock. The problem was that I was still very young and didn't make much money, so therefore I never really actually bought too many figures, but I was obsessed with the idea of having a collection. Then I realized the same thing mentioned in the video, which was that you can't take any of this with you when you die. After that I realized a few things... 1. I am in no financial state to be prioritizing toys 2. When I die, I will go to either Heven or Hell, Maybe Purgatory, and no matter where I am these toys can't come with me. 3. Material objects should come close to last on what's important in life.

I've been feeling this way about my art. Buying and collecting art supplies and trying to get better at it but lately I've been asking myself "why?". I mean, it takes time to do all of this. Yes, i can get better but what's the point of it all? To post it? Make a comic? A story? A game? What do I even want to say? Is it even a good message? Do i just want acknowledgement? And if so why isn't everybody else enough? To whom am i trying to reach out to? Does audience even matter? Shouldn't it matter? I'm not saying people who draw shouldn't be doing that but like you said, you can't take any of these things with you. My drawings. My worlds. My books. It's become unhealthy for me and I dont know how to make it healthy without giving it all up for GOD. It's become an idol almost. One I've sacrificed my life in time to. And for what? But thank you for sharing your story. Like another comment I read earlier said, go to GOD. Google "saint Augustine quotes" and begin that journey right now. He's a guy who did all kinds of...let's just say sins...who, in his 30s, turned to GOD and decided to change his life. I think he even had a kid from an adulterous relationship but don't quote me on that. Point is, he did bad stuff and the church now celebrates him as a saint! Meaning he is a model for us to look up to. That's crazy to me but, I mean, if he can do it then why not me, right? I'm still breathing so why not. It's never too late so long as you have GOD's breath in your lungs. That's his mercy. Here's some of my favorite quotes from him by the way (some that still give me strength as someone who still falls to many sins): "There is no sinner without a future. And there is no saint without a past." "Lord, my heart is restless until it rests in you" So beautiful. Do know that the battle goes on my dudes. "Accepting" is literally step one and there's a whole ladder you gotta climb! Pray for me brothers. I'll be praying for you as well. Prayer is powerful. Just read Exodus 18 verses 16 to 33. Great example there.
