What are Crank Seals? How do I replace my crank seals? In this how-to revival video I explain how to replace crank seals yourself without splitting the case. In an attempt to honor my father's legacy and create new memories with my sons, I race against the weather to fix the crank seals on my vintage arctic cat snowmobile before the spring thaw.

In this video I take my 1973 Arctic Cat Lynx on the first run since around 1996. I got it out of storage this year after my dad passed away. He bought it when it was a year old and I drove it for years when I was my kid's age, from the mid 1980's through the 1990's. This has been a great project for me and the kids and brings back a lot of good memories of my dad. I hope you enjoy!

    I'm interested in the forward controls. I'm 6'4" and 350lbs (think defensive tackle) and I was throwing my leg over several bikes recently. • @MNMoto
      @MNMoto 3 года назад

      It really is the easiest bike to modify because the brake resivour is on the handlebars and not on the floorboard like a Harley. All you need are the brackets and shift linkage extensions that come is a kit for super cheap. I think there were a 4inch and 6inch version, I got the 6. I will see if I can find the link. Watching this back two years later I would say two notable updates. First is do not buy a cheap mic. You can get cheap mounts and other things, but for mics you get what you pay for. Second is get a camera with a direct mic. I have had more issues with audio recording devices and syncing than with anything else. You will get a huge head start by getting a gopro with a direct mic and a quality microphone. If cost is a concern the Sony is a good starting point in the $20-$30 range. If I was going to invest in my channel I would start with a Gopro black with mic adaptor and quality mic, a good computer with enough power to quickly edit and upload, and actual editing software (NOT freeware). I would also start with "feet on the ground" content like builds and moto topics with some riding footage sprinkled in and work up to motovlogging. Walterrific and do it with dan made it look way too easy IMO.

    I HAVE THE SAME LYNX SLED WITH ONLY JUST OVER 500 MILES ON IT. MY UNCLE BOUGHT IT NEW IN LACHUTE QUEBEC. IT NEEDS A CRANKSHAFT SEAL , THE ORIGINAL SPUN OUT OF POSITION WHEN I STARTED IT . THE SLED WAS STORED FOR MANT YEARS SO I GUESS IT DRIED OUT AND BECAME LESS FLEXIBLE. MY QUESTION IS DO YOU KNOW OF A CANADIAN SOURCE FOR THE SEAL AND ALSO DOES THE CLUTCH PULL OFF THE SHAFT OR IS IT SCREWED ON? YOU CAN EMAIL ME AT CLAUDE.BOWERS@GMAIL.COM WITH ANY INFORMATION IF YOU WISH.

    • @MNMoto
      @MNMoto 3 года назад

      I just ordered crank seals and a clutch puller from Dennis Kirk. It was actually a whole gasket kit that came with seals for around twenty bucks. The engine would not idle and it would rev when I shot spray behind the clutch, a telltale sign of bad crank seals. I am thinking of doing a part 4 on crank seals since there is little out there on the subject for these cats.

    • @MNMoto
      @MNMoto 3 года назад

      I did not need to modify anything. Just pay close attention to the width of the clamping area because the vstar clamps are wide. The fat bob bars just fit and the knurled areas don't match perfect, but they worked for me.

    • @user-px9tq5bj3o
      @user-px9tq5bj3o 3 года назад

      @@MNMoto The bars I was looking at are pretty much the same specs but 12" rise. I'm guessing the knurled area is why it's telling me it won't fit but that's no big deal. Anyways thanks for responding!

    • @MNMoto
      @MNMoto 3 года назад

      @@user-px9tq5bj3o with 12" rise the cables may not be long enough. That is the issue with the v star is nothing is engineered for these bikes in aftermarket. it is a gamble unless you go with something like barron bars. I was just too cheap and the harley bars were a steal marketplace. I probably would not have gambled retail unless I knew there was a good return policy.

Second tip.....did you know that the gaps between the handlebar clamps are supposed to all be equal? It's easy to put undue strain on the cast arch clamps if you don't do this, and they could crack.

    Interestingly enough I have determined this is a 1973. Also, a correction of my statement... the 292cc is a Kawasaki engine. Furthermore, I learned that the Waconia Ride-In is now the Midwest Ride-In and will be in Elk River at the ERX motorsports park. I am assuming this may be due to a combination of lake conditions the last few years and the fact the park in Waconia remodeled their parking lot. A lot more learning to come, I am sure. feel free to make comments to help me on my path.
