If you don't want to pay for photoshop, grab "Krita" which is a free, and is fully featured art program. If you are willing to spend like, $50, Affinity Draw is another great choice. Honestly, try Krita first.

AFF 2nd Ed is a fine system. But far too complicated for me. Thankfully, the original FF RPG (which was severely lacking) has been cloned and/or taken for inspiration: best of these is Spellzard!…also Warlock and Troika!. Spellzard! is like AFF but super super simple and lighter and easier and faster! (Note, I’m saying this as a fan of rules-lite stuff). Heh Cheers, brother!

Honestly, I think White Box is probably the best out of all these for its simplicity and the ability to expand/contract the rules per your own needs. It's also really easy to homebrew for, I think.

I have no plans to give my money to that woke WOC. They make garbage content and hate the original game. Like everything coming out from California.

BECMI, and I know this is kind of pedantic, is not an OSR game. It's just an old game.

I used Lulu to print B/X and BECMI books and my drill press for the hole punch. Turned out better than I remember the originals being -- good stuff.

Just got back from a trip, and opened the package today, looking forward to playing. Love these books. Keep up the great work.

I was VERY tempted to get Mothership but I held off because I generally play solo these days and didn't think it would be a good fit for that. I may still pick it up just to read.

1:58 "Ugh... I hate Bargle." Words spoken by anyone who played BECMI (often accompanied by "I loved Aleena.") Like many people, I started with BECMI, but I left D&D behind because I disliked Hit Points and, in particular, Vancian magic. In recent years, I have had as nostalgic urge to play again, however, digging out my Rules Cyclopedia (I stupidly got rid of my boxed sets last time I moved). I did enjoy 5 Torches Deep, but they turned me off a bit with their rant in the back of the Origins book, so when I want that D&D-style gaming, I prefer to go to something like OSE, ICRPG, or Shadowdark.

It's been a while since I looked at my Basic set, but I think the Cleric's XP amount is similar to the Thief - a low amount to get to 2nd level quicker.

hey Doomcock, do you actually film yourself for every episode, or do you just use stock footage of yourself and do a voice over? I could see you doing either.

I got my box about a month ago. Still in the shrink wrap. Took so long to arrive that I lost enthusiasm for the game.

Roleplaying is fun!

Thanks for the video. Love these games. I tend more toward the "rules light" genre rather than anything that is true old D&Dish stuff, so FTD is a winner as it's fleshed out cousing Shadowdark. What I like about FTD and SD is they can play old school modules just fine (adjust the HPs down to old school levels and/or just remove the CON bonuses for each HD). Basic Fantasy is cool for that too, and EVEN if you don't play BF, you should checkout their adventures. They adapt pretty easily to any OSR type game. OSE should make the list too. The editing is fantastic. The price is high but every once in a while the PDF is on sale. Wait for that if you cant stomach the prices. And... don't shoot the messenger, but 5e Essentials Kit rulebook pdf is still available for FREE. It is streamlined and if you used just this to play a 5e rules light, you can get the feel of OSR with a few gritty rule mods (reduce healing to OSR levels, remove the con bonuses for HPs for characters and monsters, and return the monsters to OSR HD and hit points with no con bonus etc).

Overall a very good game in my opinion. I haven' t ran it yet but I believe it will be great for newcommers to the hobby. It has a real video game feeling to it. Yet something I don't understant is why you can t get more hp through the game. I am also wondering about the combat system. It looks like it is very player's friendly once you level up. Same for advantage/disadvantage. One d6 more or less once you get your stats to 4 or 5 won't make much difference statistically. Still it looks like a really cool ttrpg. Thanks for the neat review

Great choices! I need to check out some of these. I also enjoy Olde Swords Reign and Dungeon Crawl Classics.

5 levels and you need 3xp to get to level 2 and you gain 1 xp for failing a roll. Sounds terrible.

The encounter dice are intriguing. I can see players getting nervous every time I dropped a die in the middle.

I would also add OSRIC it is pretty much the OG Retroclone system and you can get it for free for the PDF or get it printed both soft and hardback :-) I know they are working on another update that should be out later in the year that will add more to it. I also like Shadowdark I know its not really an OSR game its more NSR. Has alot of OSR type stuff in it. I use it to run OSR adventures and even old TSR stuff. Just need to change XP and AC system it takes seconds to do.

Thanks for sharing! A very quick and clear actual play 👌. I’ll answer some of your questions from the video 😊. At 15:30: Yes, the failed defense test when the spider tried to bite her awards 1 xp. But failed initiative tests (KNO) doesn’t not give xp, it’s the only exception in the game 😊. A ‘Test’ is an attribute test, meaning when you roll dice to test an ability. At 26:20: “W2/S3 creatures” means that the ability will affect two creatures of choice on a weak success and 3 creatures of choice on a strong success. A creature is the most broad definition of something that’s a valid target, less specific definitions are: Ally, and Enemy. So creature is everyone and anyone. At 29:06: You are correct that Sinister strike uses DEX and not STR, even though it’s a melee attack. That’s the Rogues special ability, to be able to fight in melee with DEX, no other class can do that. Thanks again for doing this actual play 🙏
