    Some company sleeves were actually the plain white ones so be careful. The Stax singles I collected in the 1960's all came in n plain white sleeves. I have also noticed that DJ's tend to put their records in white or brown plain cardboard sleeves and write the name of the he song on it. Any comments on that?

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller 4 дня назад

      @christopherpatefield6150 Hi, Christopher. Yes, some were white. 60s Atlantic were mainly sold in plain white. Old Vogue Coral were plain brown. One of the reasons DJs used card sleeves was that it was easier to flip through the singles and find what you want. (Paper sleeves were flimsy and impossible to flip through, and each record has to be lifted out individually to see the label). The polylined card also protected the discs. I know someone who used to DJ. His records are still in card sleeves, but with the original paper sleeves kept inside to keep them in good condition, too.

    On my turntable tonight : The Hollies - ‘The Hit List’ Nils Lofgren and Grin (Embassy 31770) - (Very underrated European influenced musician) Black Nativity Original Cast Album (Philips PD-174) - absolute banger! Graham Parker - High Times - Cracking comp! Hi Alan, Merry Xmas and a happy, healthy and rekkid saturated 2025 to you! How are you going? It’s been a while hasn’t it! Lots happening at my end. Daughter graduated from high school. Wife and daughter had a ‘girls only’ holiday in Japan with their lifelong girl pals. Meanwhile, I discover that stripping metal-framed windows back to bare metal is hard work, “No Fun, my Babe, No Fun”,and painful on the wrists! Alan, I’ve come to a conclusion after listening to numerous prog records that I’ve found recently. Prog rock is just self-indulgent willie-whacking!!!! Prog albums I’ve picked up include Emerson Lake and Palmer (live triple album); Starcastle (first and second albums. Like YES but more melodic); Genesis (all the early albums up to ‘Lamb’); Focus (At the Rainbow Theatre); some awful Santana twaddle; and Black Widow (‘III’ album). Actually, I had to buy this lot from an elderly lady in order for her to offer to sell me her Japanese 1970’s CEC BD-2000 turntable she no longer used. She also sold me a couple of good albums, Black Sabbath’s first album (gatefold) on the Vertigo swirl (VO6 847 903 VTY); and Mandingo, ‘Primeval Rhythm of Life’(Studio 2 Quadraphonic Q4.Two.400). The later album is excellent! Enough about Prog rock. "Killer Hard Rock" eh? Since we last spoke I’ve had to re-assess my view of one particular hard rock musician I have avoided like the plague, namely Ted Nugent. He’s always come across to me as a politically extreme right wing, misogynist, loud mouth. At a church fete recently I found a near mint copy of his first, self- titled solo album (ELPS3756) and was blown away by it. It’s well produced rock and roll of a high caliber. The album builds slowly and then the first two tracks on side two absolutely ‘kick the dunny-door down!’ to use the Aussie vernacular. A second album I found at that fete was a factory sealed copy of ‘About Us’ by US band, Stories (KSBS2068), containing the radio hit, Brother Louie. I can't decide whether I should break the seal or not. Are sealed records more valuable. Other albums I’ve found recently include: Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones (UK first press) Blind Faith (German press) The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands (SAHA7779) (Australian first press) The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper (US first press) In A Gadda Da Vida - Iron Butterfly (Oz first press) Metamorphosis - Iron Butterfly (Oz first press) Bennelong Session (HRS 2077) - Christian k’ching k’ching 45s/EPs Depeche Mode 12inch Promo - Personal Jesus/Just Cant Get Enough (Timo Mass remix) People - ‘I Love You / Somebody Tell Me My Name’ (CP-1729) 1968 Psychedelic (you might like this one Alan) Deram Hits Volume 6 - Procol Harum/ The Move (DEA1002)1968 Freddy Hampton and Trik - ‘Hooch/Born Today’ (Gamba GA10) 1971 David Bowie - In Bertold Brecht’s BAAL EP- fold out picture sleeve (RCA Bow 11) 1982 The Exciters - Doo Wah Diddy Diddy/If Love Came Your Way (UP1041) CD Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - ‘High Numbers’ CTCR14242 (Check this out Alan! Skip Tk 1 as its a bit naff) What I’ve had on high rotate since we last spoke are two Graham Parker comps, ‘High Times’ and ‘The best of’. Strangely there is very little overlap between these two comps which is great. Favourite tracks - ‘Hey Lord, Dont ask me Questions’ (fast live version) and ‘Protection’. As Ive mentioned to you before Im a big mid 20thC black gospel fan, and I found a absolute bell-ringer of an album called ‘Black Nativity Original Cast Album’ (Philips PD-174 mono Australian press ) Lots of ‘call and response’ singing. Such a fantastic album. Highly recommended, Alan. Another album I found recently I very nearly flicked past due to the cover being in French. On a second pass I realised it was in fact the official French soundtrack to Wim Wenders film ‘Wings of Desire’. I luckily spotted the names Nick Cave, Laurie Anderson and ‘Crime and the City Solution’ in the bottom corner, otherwise I’d have left it behind. Remember the Crime singer used to be my next door neighbour (Album details - ‘Les Ailes Du Desir’ - Milan A316, gatefold). As we are coming up to New Years Eve, I thought I’d end with a personal story. What sparked my interest in doing this was finding the album ‘No Exit’ by The Angels, a hard rocking Australian band (known as Angel City in the States and UK). Australia has a history of producing hard rocking pub bands, The Angels, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, The Party Boys, Divinyls, Coloured Balls, Midnight Oil. Known as ‘Cock Rock’ over here. Anyway, to get on with the story, on New Years Eve, 1979 they held a free rock concert on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House to see the New Year in. The acts appearing were Australian bands The Angels, Stevie Wright (Easybeats singer), Dragon, Hush, Rolf Harris (WHY!!) and Jesus Christ Superstar singer/actor Jon English. The series of performances went throughout the afternoon and into the night. I had recently arrived from New Zealand to see the family and decided to go along. The estimate was that 100,000 people showed up to squeeze onto a piece of land the size of a postage stamp. It was as hot as hell and alcohol was allowed. A recipe for trouble, and boy did it happen. There were a lot of very drunk people and piles of vomit everywhere. Harris came on early with his wobble board and was booed relentlessly. Glass bottles and beer cans started to be hurled at him. He got the message and departed quickly. If that wasn’t bad enough they then brought on Jon English, a tough no-nonsense ex- rugby league playing Englishman who threatened to throttle some people in the audience if they threw bottles at him. He did a short gig as well. The crowd calmed down a bit when the main bands came on but still continued to drink like fish. By the time midnight came around and The Angels stepped on stage you just knew there was going to be trouble. By this time there were multiple fights in the audience, mostly ethnically based. The concert was being broadcast live to the world as it was part of the New Years Eve firework spectacular. I saw two aboriginal guys run onto the stage being chased by some southern European guys. They were absolutely pummelled with fists and boots and then carted off to hospital. It was very scary indeed. The Angels started to play which got the audience surging. I was at the front of the stage. The Angels guitar player was right in front of me. His normal stage ‘shtick’ is to stand perfectly still for the whole concert. He was a sitting duck. The singer, Doc Neeson, was very provocative and jumped around the stage provoking the audience to react. A bottle was hurled which hit him flush on the scone. He kept going. Next, the black leather clad guitarist standing perfectly still was felled by a bottle. I noticed some morons beside me had ripped a metal sign off a pole. One of them threw it like a sharp frisbee and it hit the singer flush on the head, cutting him open. He fell to the ground, somewhat theatrically like a wild west shootout, and that was the end of the concert. Then a riot started between the cops and some of the audience. I remember that I was so shocked by what I saw that I couldn’t stop shaking. Rock concerts on New Years Eve were unsurprisingly banned after that. Well that's it Alan! Another year nearly over. Its been a pleasure chatting with you and I hope we can continue in 2025. I hope 2025 brings you dozens of ultra rare barnyard finds that you can tell me all about. All the best to you and your family. HI Kevin. I said I would get to this by New Year and I have just about managed it. It can sometimes be quite daunting checking out so many records. I have not been feeling too well which hasn't helped! Fortunately, I knew quite a few of these already! You got a nice selection from the old lady - if prog is your thing... I am struggling with listening to music at all at the moment and prog would probably be lowest on the list of priorities! Though there are times a good willie-whacking never does anyone any harm... There are always naysayers in this world of so-called free speech when anyone has an opinion which differs from big brother and sister. Ted Nugent's reputation has suffered as a result. I don't really know his music, but I am all for letting the art speak above political views etc. I have most of the albums you list here and have the Depeche Mode and People singles and am sure I have the Exciters somewhere. That Black Nativity is a rousing record! I watched Wings Of Desire a few years ago and was slightly let down by the story, but the cinematography was excellent. I cannot recall the music, though! I still have not found any records. None of the 11 shops within a 15 mile radius has had a record donation in over 6 weeks... In some ways I am tiring of collecting them and am reassessing things going forward. A few weeks ago, the strangest thing happened. I pulled records from the shelves and they were inexplicably warped. Some quite badly, some were dished. A lot of rare first pressings and valuable records were affected. (We had a very unusual period of 9 days of full sun in a row and maybe the low sun and cool temperatures affected the shelves. I can't think of any other reason). It wasn't every record on the shelf, as 2 or 3 would be OK, then the next 1 would be warped. I haven't really had the motivation to go through them all, but it knocked me for six. I uploaded a video 3 weeks ago about it and set it to private within the hour. A couple of people suggested buying a vinyl flat. These are hugely expensive and not guaranteed perfect results. I am not sure if the records are going to get worse in the long run, either. I probably just need to get a screen for them... This all sounds very bleak, but I will come to a decision about it all soon. I may just upload a video about it. On a positive note, it has made me realize which ones are actually most meaningful to me and which I value most. (Something I was already thinking about before this incident really put my conclusions to the test!) My singles probably come out on top! And they are, thankfully, warp free! None of this story can compare to your New Years one, though! Yikes. I would have been shaking after that as well. I went to a festival once and ended up in the ambulance after someone decided to give me a few punches. My 'friend' standing next to me scarpered. Nice. Anyway, I wish you all the best for the New Year, too. (Your New Year message popped up while I was writing this). Have fun. Alan

      Hi Alan, Im really sorry to hear about your records warping. That's awful. It definitely sounds like a heat issue that is sun related. You don't run heaters in that room do you (or directly below that room)? Hopefully you can salvage the best ones. Since reading your letter I typed 'VINYL LP RECORD FLATTENING SERVICES, UK' into Google and it came up with a few places you could contact to get an idea of costs to flatten your most prized records. One place in Peterborough called Analogue Seduction sounded good, if a little pricey. The machines themselves are very expensive as you say. I checked to see if they are cheaper on AliExpress but they are still about $1300 Australian on there. Now Alan, why did the bloke thump you at the music festival? Was it just random or were you yelling out "get this shite off and bring on Bay City Rollers"? We all need to be more tolerant and accepting of each others tastes! 😃 Finding records in your area - some thoughts. Have you considered taking a drive down to Newcastle/Sunderland mid-week and checking out their charity shops? I say mid-week because I think weekends are a waste of time. I always ask the shop employees if they have any records out the back and I am amazed at the number that do, and then bring them out to show me. I tend to go on Wednesday's and Thursday's, if I'm free, as most collectors seem to hit the shops on Fridays over here. I've also had a bit of luck at garage sales and church fetes although I find I have to turn up at the crack of dawn or I'm wasting my time. I wish you success in getting your records flattened. I'll keep my eye out for options and let you know if I find any. All the best, Kevin

Going through my father’s things I’ve found an enormous amount of correspondence/information/photos/memorabilia of Otto. What should I do with it? I’m just now going through the enormous LP collection he had, just randomly checked a Klemperer album, and came on here to search selling classical music. And your video started with Klemperer. Big brother is listening 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣🤣👍🏻

      Big Brother responding. It sounds like you have a very unique collection of memorabilia that the classical music world would be really interested in. I would be, but I can't afford it. I think you should sell it through a specialist music auction sale. It might be worth contacting one of the classical music magazines and asking them. Dave Hurwitz on RUclips might be able to help. He uploads videos every day and is an expert with decades of experience.

    I know every song by the band and I have no idea what UHQR is supposed to mean and I would prefer to remain that way

    My favourite way of listening to these dramatic, urgent, 'emotive'.....mid/early 20th century string quartet/quintet pieces is to experience them with silent movies. Keaton, Chaplin and co in often dire, absurd....situations. Often a perfect match-up.

      A good idea. Life is short, and some of those piano soundtracks can be quite jarring.

    I love this. Isn't it amazing that a short clip of seemingly frenetic playing grabs your attention and holds it? I'm still on a slow-moving journey through Shosta (I have the Barshai set on CD and the Kondrashin symphonies on vinyl) and am always inspired by his apparent desire to make an important statement in his music. Impossible to ignore, if one has a half-decent attention span.

      Your point about attention span is quite apt. I was hoping the music would grab viewers' attention as it did in your case, but judging by the stats half stopped watching a minute in!

      @@statictraveller To be fair, string quartets are a fringe interest!

    Music to keep you on the edge of your seat...can imagine this being used as a soundtrack to a tense Hitchcock style thriller or horror.

      Yes, or a dark updated version of Chorlton And The Wheelies

    whoever wrote the music for the Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho must have heard this, the similarities are there! my favourite Shostakovich is symphony 7 with the invading siege army approaching.

      I thought I would look it up. Interestingly, the Psycho score was written before this quartet. The film was released in September 1960 and this piece, though written in July 1960, was not performed for the first time until October- and that was in Leningrad.

    Shosta is a master of capturing the ear and painting soundscapes and feelings, I just bought another of his last weekend.
