      @@ejnixon Congrats on the milestone! It is so freeing to fly a solo cross country, it feels like you have your license. Good luck on the rest of your journey! Personally my top tip for after you hit your requirements is to try to get your landings on a specific spot. I had a tendency to land long because I cared a lot more about centerline throughout my training, but then it flustered me in my check ride when I floated down the runway on the short field landing.

    Hi Max, are the controllers at Groton usually like that? You absolutely did the right thing asking for clarification, and great job not reacting to his rudeness. Controller should have anticipated the conflict on the ground and asked the other guy to hold short on Bravo at Charlie for traffic exiting the runway.

    • @mblaise3
      @mblaise3 7 месяцев назад

      Not usually, I've had very good experience with ATC both at KGON and in general around this area. This guy is always hard on pilots who read back incorrect or just say Roger rather than repeating the instruction. It made me think he would be respectful of ensuring clear coms that everyone understood, not this toxic attitude. Hopefully it was just an off day for him, which we all have once in a while. I'll still be asking for clarification whenever I feel I need it.

    Good job short field to and land. On first soft field P factor, just as you brought the nose up to get the mains off, took you left of centerline. Walk the rudder just a bit dynamically and proactively (push against the spring interconnect just a bit) to bracket the centerline and that will not happen. Same on sort final, use rudder only and not aileron. Get the nose yawing correctly rather than going the wrong way just a bit before the right way in turns. Don't want to turn on short final, just bracket the centerline. Because of nose wheel just off and then mains off into low ground effect earlier, soft field is actually a better short field takeoff then the ACS short field technique. License to learn stuff. Westley soft field, use the extra airspeed from the too high potential energy of altitude to gain and hold three point attitude until touchdown or even a little power if runway still available. Idea to touch down as slow as possible. Airplane will fly much slower than Vso in low ground effect with power (extra airspeed traded from extra altitude instead of power because you were high). The nose wheel should come just off earlier on takeoff. Better job with rudders on P factor and great job staying in low ground effect for best acceleration. Too much steering wheel action on the landing. The spring interconnect is getting the dynamic rudder needed, but the aileron adverse yaw is moving the nose differently than you expect. Use rudder only. The spring will cause a little aileron wing wag, will be more coordinated. Yes, we have to lead rudder to be coordinated. Anyway, just use rudders to bracket the centerline. Good job not letting it get to wild wing wagging anyway. Good job all around on the short field. Some more license to learn stuff. After PPL if you still fly Cherokee, notice how much slower Vso is than POH approach airspeed. That is to take the short wing sink but not stall away. That sink however, makes true short field easier because it allows throttle to be brought into effective dynamic control of glide angle and rate of descent. If we get slow enough to get the big sink and then control that sink with power, we will be able to touch down slowly and softly on the desired spot. The throttle can now accurately control the glide angle to the spot. Because we are slower and the prop is blasting lots of extra relative wind over the wing, we can eliminate the round out and just flair to touchdown. This eliminates the round out and uncontrolled hold off. Have fun.

    Hi, Can you share your audio recording setup?

    • @mblaise3

      I use an Nflightcam cable that fits a GoPro. It's a splitter that you plug into the jack on the plane then you get one line to plug your headset into, and another to plug into your GoPro directly which makes it really convenient for not having to line the audio up with the video manually and potentially get out of sync. I did a fair amount of research and Nflightcam is the only brand worth getting at the moment. They also sell one a little cheaper that splits to a male 3.5mm aux connection so you can plug it into a phone or standalone recorder. I use Davinci Resolve 18 (free) for the video editing.

  • @jimmydulin928

    Yes, getting speed under control is even more important on short fields. Vso, and out of ground effect airspeed, has nothing to do with the actual speed reduction required for the wing to quit lifting the weight in low ground effect. The POH approach speed, especially in short winged airplanes, is much faster than Vso or even 1.3 Vso in some. Slowing down to the point that we are using more power to maintain wanted glide angle and rate of descent puts a higher percentage of free prop blast relative wind over the wing that longer winged airplanes. I taught power/pitch to eliminate round out and touch down slowly and softly on the number every time, but ACS won't allow that. By learning that first, however, my student soloed earlier enough that no excess time was lost learning ACS lack of energy management on landing and on takeoff. For the short field takeoff, why is the soft field actually shorter. Because acceleration level in low ground effect is used, which is far more efficient energy management. The ACS now calls for acceleration in ground effect to Vx or Vy as appropriate, but neither is appropriate on long runways nor is either appropriate on short runways until near the obstruction. Lots of bent tin and skin due to lack of use of free ground effect energy. Student is doing an excellent job keeping the centerline between his legs (and yours, an optical thing), but the steering wheel driving to achieve, a most common error, is distracting him from other issues. The spring interconnect in the Cherokee causes apparent coordination, but unless we lead rudder the nose goes the wrong way first. This is distracting. Dutch rolls, sometime now called coordination rolls, will guarantee leading rudder. There is no way we can bracket the distant target without leading rudder. And on short final we don't want to turn anyway. We want to yaw correctly to bracket the target (walk the rudders) rather than yaw incorrectly using aileron.

    • @mblaise3

I did a lot of home study using the Sporty's test prep questions and practice exams, and trust me it will save you money. It's going to benefit you having learned everything in advance and hearing it for the 2nd or 3rd time when you get in the plane with your instructor. You want instructor time to be practice, not learning something brand new. I took the PAR after my first dual XC but before my Solo XCs and felt like that was pretty good but could have done it earlier. If you get really good at the practice exams you will be fine, the real one is shockingly similar. Some of the questions were verbatim repeats of things I saw on the practice tests. I didn't do any sim work. My instructor's position was that home simulators can help you get the very basics down and pick things up easier but as you get further into it you need the realism of actually being in the plane. I'm at 33 hours now and have all my requirements done except 2.5 hours solo and 2 hours simulated instrument, so hoping to get it done close to the 40hr minimum. I am also nervous for my Oral and Check Ride but trying to watch as many videos as I can showing mock Orals. MZeroA has a good audiobook for it. Good Luck on everything!

      @@mblaise3 it's a part 61 though accelerated. Are u going after your instrument, crew/commercial, cfi's and ME as well? The total cost for me is $110,000 plus another $40,000 interest 😭

      @@davidt8087 I'm not planning on anything past my PPL at the moment. I'd be lying if I said the thought of a career change hasn't crossed my mind, but for now it's a hobby. I'm about 7-8k deep and currently scheduling my PPL check ride. I'm surprised you know a total cost going into it if it's part 61. Sounds more like ATP.
