reading tiktok favourites because i love to torture myself
hi friends :) i frequently say that booktok faves are not for me but it's impossible not to be inundated with suggestions while scrolling and sometimes my curiosity gets the better of me. SO, i only read tiktok book recommendations for a week and today i wanna chat about them. there's a mix of old and new favourites, different genres, but as always, some unfiltered rants about my opinions on these books so sit tight and get cosy.

    this is my first video from you and the quality omg AND YOUR VIBES!! i hope this channel can get supersupersuper big and successful, the quality is justt that good. The books you've put in the Six of Crows tier looked so cool!! and hearing you talk about them made me add them all to my tbr list 🏃 ive only read babel from that list, and I've given it 4 stars, not because it wasn't good but because some things were just, really, really repetitive and the character development wasn't really that enjoyable for me, and some things were a bit predictable so I couldn't fully enjoy it. Some of the characters frustrated me...but anyway!! 😁 And as a person that was born and raised in a foreign country, I guess the message wasn't really for me but I understand why it had a bigger impact on other people. I've been on the lookout for people with similar taste and now im never leaving xoxoxo 😁

    I've just finished the second book in the Powerless series and I can officially confirm that the character lacks emotional depth. They don't really seem to deal with many dark emotions and when they do it's always surface level. One of their friends could die and they would take about three seconds to feel somewhat sad and maybe even shed a single tear. I just feel like nothing was fully developed in those books...

    I am new here, so I was delighted to see Six of Crows as a tier on its own. I ADORE this series and Grishaverse in general. Still haven't gotten around to reading The Familiar or The Ninth House though, because I'm a bit afraid I won’t enjoy those as much 😭 We have a similar taste. I read Babel last year and absolutely LOVED it, so it made me happy to see it in the top tier :) And I really enjoyed The Metamorphosis and Crime and Punishment when I read it, they're beloved classics for a reason. On the contrary, Carmilla didn't impress me too much either. I enjoyed the story, but it could have had more substance to it. Or more blood. Great video!! You have a very calming presence and it was fun to watch you rank your reads. Hoping for many nice days out in the second half of the year :)

    100% agree on the confusing dialogue! It happens a lot to me when the characters don't have their own unique voices. This also bugs me when authors try to write alternating points of view that all sound like the same person talking.

My top 5 books: - Paradise Lost (John Milton) - Dracula (Bram Stoker) - Dimension of Miracles (Robert Sheckley) - The History of Mr Polly (H.G. Wells) - The First Men in the Moon (H.G. Wells) With an honourable mention to all of Chekhov’s short stories.

    • @cornnflaek6234
      @cornnflaek6234 28 дней назад

      @@nikkisbooks_‘The first men in the moon’ would be great, it’s pretty short but I found it very immersive. ‘The island of Dr Moreau’ is also good, it’s easy to read and very unsettling at times (in a good way). His less famous books are also amazing, he wrote a lot of social commentary. If you’re more interested in that than the sci-fi, I’d suggest ‘Kipps’, or ‘the history of Mr Polly’. But really you can’t go wrong with any of his works.

    I felt for you, I hope you’re better. I’m also watching your vid with eyes running and sneezing ++ I am only on my4th annotated book. I have notice my style changing already. I would like to learn to annotate at a higher level. At the moment I highlight funny quotes, things I want to remember character development. However I work with a teacher who sees so much more in a txt that I do see. I wish I could get to the nitty gritty of the text. For eg why a character says what they say - the real meaning behind the words. Am I making sense?

      @nikkisbooks_ Месяц назад

      Oh no, I hope you feel better soon! And yes, I completely get what you mean and honestly feel really similar. I think part of it is practice because reading in that way is very different than when I just read casually. But also some writers I tend to vibe with more and am able to see that detail more easily than with others so maybe some writing styles just suit peoples brains differently? Idk, as long as you’re having fun annotating I think that’s all that matters🥰

    I actually remember reading firelight back in the day! I remember the Nintendo scene so vividly I don’t know why. Anyway what I was gonna say If you’re done w the twilight parody project pls feel free to ignore this but. There’s another twilight parody called Awoken by Serra Elinson which might be up your alley? Its not as directly parodic of twilight and more of a stealth parody of the teen paranormal romance genre tropes of the era but part of the joke is that the love interest is Cthulhu. It’s not as obvious as firelight or new moan & closer to a stealth parody imo. I enjoyed firelight but it’s less like in your face insane, over the top, silly, directly parodying twilight, and more making commentary abt the genre. It’s been a hot sec since I read it but I enjoyed it. (It’s co-written by Lindsey Ellis & Elisa Hansen & a few other ghostwriters I believe). It’s an old project but the videos of their process are still on RUclips too! Anyway feel free to ignore tbe suggestion. This was a nostalgia trip & I’m glad I got recced this in my feed!

    it was nice to see a commonplace book video about them being for connection and vibes rather than performing so in regards to the call to action haha: I started for a variety of reasons but mostly I had a bit of a hoarding problem so it was an easy way to summarize and get rid of things. Basically I could take a picture of a book and write down my thoughts or quotes about it and then give the book away. Same thing went for my old notes from school after graduation, I didn't want to toss them without getting at least some information from them. So I took notes on my notes and then recycled the original material. I very quickly ended up finding out that they are quite effective for keeping track of liars as well so if anyone is dealing with that just give it a try lol

      that is such a genius move when it comes to the hoarding!! and omg love the creativity of keeping track of liars😂

      @@nikkisbooks_ there were a few other things that were equally useful when it came to dealing with the hoarding: like getting rid of 1 item every time I folded laundry or creating an emergency bag out of items I was almost ready to get rid of (which technically still worked but were clearly not meant to be used), but the digitization and consolidation into a commonplace book was still probably the most useful. when it comes to the liars though haha: focusing on one person and writing down the things they said the most frequently allowed for a sort of narrative to develop and then I could simply ask questions which would result in their behavior becoming more mentionable and thus more manageable. but that was mostly useful for figuring out how to not interact with those people anymore and not exactly a standard commonplace practice

    Thank you for sacrificing your time this way 😭 I remember the first one being on all the bookshop shelves here for a long time. Whether that was because people were buying it or weren't buying it I'm not sure.. Funnily enough, these parodies give big pick me energy despite that being their main criticism of Twilight. Like the using popular alt music as torture lmao. Great video!

    I haven't read it yet, but I've heard great things about Vampires of El Notre for the type of vampire content you seem to want! Gothic, old school, scary vampires. NOT Edward Cullen lol!

    The popularity of these books exhaust me. Tropes, plot, genre, whatever, if a person is into what these books do with that, I won't complain, even when I'm not into those parts myself. But how is it nearly a MILLION people (at present) can put up with the *writing* ? What's going on? Seriously. I don't consider myself analytical and I'm not even interested in being so. I just read for fun. But given this, the fact that I STILL pick up on writing issues constantly from Fourth Wing ... it just makes the love surrounding these books so tiring. It screams "unfair to other authors", making me feel defensive of people I've never even heard of.

    I've recently started annotating my books and I really enjoy it. I was a little hesitant about annotating at first because I thought that it would be too distracting or that I wouldn't enjoy the book as much, but I find that I'm actually enjoying the book more. I personally don't take it too seriously and I don't try to annotate on every page, I only usually annotate while I'm reading and a thought pops up into my head. Sometimes, the thought is something silly, sometimes the thought is more serious and analytical. Part of the reason I started annotating was because sometimes I get a bit sad thinking about a book I loved and realizing that I can't really remember how I felt or what my thoughts were when I first read it, so annotating is a nice way for me to relive the joy of reading a book for the first time. It's like a little time capsule. Like, in the book that I'm reading today, I guessed a plot point before it was revealed to me, and I both annotated my guess and my reaction to when I first realized that I was right, and that's a nice moment that I would probably have forgotten about in the future had I not preserved it. It's just nice to be able to flip through and look at the mark that I made on my book. I used to try and keep my books in such pristine conditions, it was almost as if they had never been owned, but they're my books that I bought with my own money and they should feel as though they were owned and loved, and that is what annotating is to me. My favorite musical said that soul is buying used books full of marginalia, and that really changed the way I thought about and approached books. Also, I love your coffin bookcase!

    5:14 my favourite regular black gel pen to annotate with is the uni-ball Signo in 0.38. It doesn't bleed, it doesn't skip and it allows me to write smaller since books rarely have tons of space to write in. A close second choice is any Zebra Sarasa pen in 0.5. I think I'm close to owning every colour they offer under the sun but that's because I love collecting pens😂
