The fact she got booed for this is absolutely ridiculous. She raised the standard of the house when she sang like this - one of the best live performances I have ever heard. I consider it blatant bullying that she was booed, with some racism and misogyny thrown in. I lost respect for the whole culture of the “loggionisti” after this. I am sorry this affected Renee because this performance is beyond outstanding and I don’t say that as a “superfan” or something - just someone who has heard and knows the standards. What a bore that they tried to keep her in a box by being contemptuous. Well luckily we have the record here that her vocals were absolutely out of this world.

The absolutely unparalleled Renee Fleming.. My god what an instrument!

I saw her at Lyric in 1998 - this was my first Figaro and the gold standard!

Im glad to hear her in her prime . Some of her interpretations in other roles have been questionable and unmusical. She's fairly transparent about her vocal struggles. At some point she took a year off to get it together. This is vocally beautiful. She got her Fulbright to study in Germany . She wasn't thrilled and faced opposition in that country,when trying to jumpstart the career. I applaud her. She's smart ,dedicated and a good person .

Boring. Not thrilling at all.

First time watching this, I was in the audience that day. How time flies! To their credit, there's not a single cut to a different camera angle, just one long magnificent shot, the way I remember it from grand tier. I also remember the thunderous applause and one jealous diva later praising Fleming online. I won't mention her name, she used to incessantly remind everybody that she was 6 months younger than Fleming, the only one with the "true Italian style" etc lol! Anyway, glad to find this incredible historical evidence of splendid live opera singing.

Such a voice,,,,and stunningly beautiful.....

Mi permetto di esprimere un pensiero, se qualcuno cerca la classe interpretativa con la versione che ne da' Renee Fleming e chi la dirige dovra'volgere lo sguardo altrove, ma se parliamo di teatro e di emozione credo ci sia ben poco da eccepire. La spericolata interpretazione di questo brano trova un climax , non so' se sia la parola piu' adatta, di incredibile efficacia, se avessi avuto la fortuna di assistere a questa performance non credo che sarei rimasto attonito ma avrei partecipato al dramma esistenziale della protagonista piangendo in silenzio.A me piace per quello che mi offre a livello di emozioni aldila' della licenze che si prende!

And if you’ve never seen her sing Strauss live you’ve missed the legend. Y’all want to talk about squilo and think Netrebko or that screeching Radvonofsky can handle bel canto roles this challenging… do not count them screaming they’re way through the Donizetti queens 😂

How ridiculous is all that snobish criticism of Korngold - "More Corn than Gold" or "Film music". The truth is that Korngold's music is beautiful and often - very often - sublime. The operas Die Tote Stat, Der Wunder der Heliane, the Violin Concerto are great works. If he often sounds like film music it's because he invented film Music, he and Elmer Bernstein. And the film scores by both are classics. Marietta's Lied with Renee Fleming is transcendental. Thank you for posting.

Indeed she is incredible. Her high notes were unsurpassable. She jumped an octave higher with ease. But I don't forget Margit Schramm. Her voice became very warm when she was singing high notes.

I am a great admirer of Fleming, but not as Imogene , and as to the cadenza, the added ‘E’ is a little tasteless, and sounds messy.
