“Candle in a jam jar” 😂😂😂😂😂 The SX lights are 👌🏻
Great work mate!
I've looked at an ER-5 recently and forgot to check one thing. How likely is it that the fuel tap / petcock starts leaking fuel through the carburetor into the engine and it thinning out the engine oil? Because on the center stand the oil level was too high and I didn't check the condition and smell of it. The engine ran fine (only 11.4k km on it) but the throttle pickup was a little slow and delayed, couldn't do a proper test ride but it drove a small circle across the carport just fine. My worry is that the fuel tap was leaking and not on off when parked and the engine oil got contaminated by gasoline, increasing the level and he started it and it caused engine damage/wear while running. How quickly would that cause damage, like it ran for around 10 minutes with the fuel tap on pri? After reading up on it and considering the oil level was high on the center stand a bit too clear and it havig been run and parked on pri now I'm terrified that it was running for 15 minutes with gasoline diluted engine oil.
It’s a very common problem, sadly. Best bet is to renew the fuel tap entirely and install a secondary tap like I did to avoid any issues.
@cjrides.1 I intend to check the engine oil for fuel in it next time I'm there with a trailer and license plate. If it should be contaminated I'll demand a look at the airbox and if it also has fuel I'll break up the buying process unless he's willing to do a full oil change, oil filter and air filter change with a test ride. I've read up that you can't just to a compression test because the engine has a low RPM open valve bypass so the only way to check for excessive cylinder wear would be a power test on a warm engine, so however accurate it may be I'd do a 0-60 (100kph) run and if it achieves somewhat what it's supposed to I'll be good. If I do end up buying it I'll replace the whole vaccume tap garbage by plugging the carb holes and just replacing it with a standard off/on/reserve instead. I already just turn the fuel off on my 94 CBR 600 F whenever I get home, it's really not that much of a hassle. I really hope having it be ran with contaminated oil didn't ruin it because it looks like a great bike for my purpose otherwise...
Thank you for this video! I might take a look at one and trying to figure out if it's worth it for me to get one. Knowing where what is and what might potentially arrise is nice. I heard you have to completely drain the coolant when doing a valve clearance job every 6k km or so which might be a pain, only concern I've found out so far, that and the voltage regulator, rest is easy and common stuff it seems.
1st generation 07 owner here. No you don't need one. Is it a great bike within its category, yes. Is it ideal in any situation, no not at all. There are better bikes in the category for everything. Want to go FAST, new liter bike. Want lots of power to tour, any of the 1000cc-2400cc touring bikes do it better. Want a fast bike that also tours, Concourse is OK but there are better options. Even my 300lb best friend has little use for his, it is a straight line rocket that happens to turn and have a pillion seat.
Any tips on the carbs? just bought this bike and disappointed. I'm struggling to get them set in. just keeps bogging and if i do get it somewhat set, it's slow and no power
Strip and thoroughly clean them, if you replace parts make sure you use genuine and not 3rd party stuff. Set them to base settings and go from there. If all else fails, pay to have it set up on the dyno. That’s what o ended up doing and the bike came alive. 👍🏻 good luck
@cjrides.1 ah man. I'll give that a try. Genuine parts are tough tho. I bought a set from China since there's nothing here to buy. If all else fails, I'll have to fork out the cash for having them redone. Hope I don't because man that's expensive.
I just bought a bike like this and so far, got some work to do. Did a full service but carbs are effed. So waiting for the rebuild kit I bought and replaced the oring on the cooling top. The rear wheel I haven't checked and the petcock has already been serviced and fixed it seems. So thanks for showing all these stuff.
does speedometer have backlight?
Front brake replacement is a nightmare, right sparkplug difficult to remove,
There is nothing like this bike, throttle wide open its unbelievable 😁👍👍
It certainly is, hold on for dear life!
Slightly off topic question, I'm Changing the full fairing on my ZZR, any idea what size push pins fit them?
Thanks you helped me save not having to bring in my zx 14r 07 to do fluids. I have 2nd gen with no ABS.
Good stuff!!
Thx CJ I'll be using this and the Clutch vid. Much appreciated!! 2018 zx14
You might look into “speed bleeders”, they will dramatically improve your fluid changing efforts.
Thanks mate, mines a 2008 model but I would imagine it’s pretty similar. I shall give it a go !
Sounds a bit like my xj600s only I didnt start with my screwdriver yet it has 36k km which quit during winter and I dont find time. Eyeballing a 3000km 2004 model er5 with the school bars still on it. The guy didnt start well as a school and left the bike as is in his shed, selling it now with a general service so it runs. Has some surface rust and the petrolgauge thing doesnt work plus 20yr old tyres. Asking 1500 bid from 800 euro. Would I.....?
Great vid. I've just bought a 2006 ER-5 that needs tidying up. Could you recommend a good engine oil? Was thinking of Castrol Power 1. Appreciate any advice.
Test riding one on Saturday. I’m hoping the leg tuck isn’t too aggressive, if it feels good I think it’s a definite buy!
Same when you grow faster than you think 😂
Own a Gen1, just bought a 2024 ZX-14R. Brakes, they're good. Have the Brembos on the new 14R and the whole setup is no better than the Gen1. Have kevlar lines on my Gen1 and steel braided Galfers on m y 08 Hayabusa---it makes no palpable difference. The master cylinder is what makes the real difference. Personally though, I think the brakes are good on the 14, whatever year you buy. I mean, it will lock the front tire at 60-70 mph without a whole lot of travel in the lever. How much better do you want? I'll agree, could be better for sport riding but not bad as is. I hear the liter bikes have been getting some incredible brakes over the last ten years. I guess Kaw decided to keep the 14R's brakes more street/touring friendly but if you ask me, the brakes are very adequate for track riding. 2) Of course the stock exhaust sucks! Every stock exhaust on every bike is horrible. I feel for the folks who own bikes where aftermarket exhausts are prohibited. I can’t hear my stock exhaust over 70 mph and it weighs a ton. Go with any aftermarket exhaust and you’ll enjoy the bike so much more. I hope you Brits can get a Brock’s over there. Spend the $2000 US and get the full race system. Utmost love to the newbies, if you don’t know, a full system exhaust is by far the best investment in enjoying your new bike. Slip ons are ok but you might as well replace the whole exhaust for the marginal difference in price and enjoy the additional weight loss. Realistically, you’re not going to notice the extra 9 hp you get with a race header but if it’s another 5-700 dollars, why not have it? 3) Cargo space under the seat. Yeah, you’d expect more but it’s probably because of the size the bike that they had little room to spare for storage space. If you’re into storage space, the passenger seat could be modded to open up a good amount of space under the seat cowl. I’d use that for a nitrous setup but do what you want with it. The Hayabusa is the same, very little space under the saddle. 4) Multifunction meter- yeah, would have been nice to add some color but i would rather they make it more visible in all light situations regardless of what color it was. Works fine, could have been better. Agree the analog clocks are best. Gotta say, the white faces on the Gen1 are easier to read at a glance. They had that figured out 70 years ago with jet fighter gauges. Black with reversed type looks a little more sheik even if less functional.
Maybe that’s a blessing in disguise Good job you weren’t following the jalopy if you had got on the track Great video 👍
I said much the same on the way back to the hotel (Chris). Cheers 👍🏻
Thanks for posting this vid. I just received my Puig windscreen for my ER5 and can’t make head nor tail out of the instructions! 😅 so your vid will really help me get this installed as I’m not all that handy when it comes to stuff like this 👍🏼
The black hooks are for luggage. You can put bungee ties for a bag etc
Do you have a link to the exhaust?
It’s no longer offered for the ER5 sadly, at least to my knowledge.
Hi, i got myself an Er-5, and found out some issues after couple weeks and was wondering if you had any ideas about them since you seem to know this bike really well. Firstly, the steering feels light and handlebars start to wobble if i let go of them. Does the er-5 have issues with the steering head bearing wearing out or could it just be that it needs to be tightened? Wheels are not the issues since i had new ones just put on. Secondly, sometimes when the bike is cold and i try to start it, it feels like it cranks a little then stops. Then i have to let go of the starter button and try couple of times before it starts. Battery and voltage is good, thats all ive checked. Thanks and sorry if it's weird asking in old youtube videos for mechanical assistance :D
Hey! Congrats on the ER5! Check the wheel/tyre balance, just because they are new doesn’t mean they are balanced properly. Yes also check and renew the bearings and make sure everything is torqued to spec. It should sit straight and true when you remove your hands from the bars. Staring issues could be a bad earth, worn starter bushes, starter relay etc…. Start from the battery, and work down to the starter checked everything methodically and no doubt you will find the issue. Good luck 👍🏻
Muito bom 😃👍
I cleaned my front sprocket, went back to the bee wax lube, cnc air filter, and a huge heads up, unlike my busa, my zx 14 is a tuning disaster. I’m highly likely going back to stock because the yoshi 4-2-1. It is awful.
Checking one out tomorrow, perfect timining for this video.
Mines 2014; I bought in 2016 New Old Stock. Somethings up there. My brakes are phenomenal; though, I'm not ABS. I'm not a fan of ABS in a sport sense. Cans came right off for Two Bros,CF as that was the deal I found on EBay. Losing those factory cans/Cats gave much lighter feel and better balance.
Hi all I'm using same coolant thanks to your video but i don't know what coolant is inside the bike atm and I'd like to flush it What liquid to use to perform a clean flush to prep it for a different coolant Thanks
Morning. You can use a radiator/coolant system flush readily available online. I’ve used deionised water in the past too. 👍🏻
Almost 3 years ago I was in the dealer to buy a new hayabusa but after sitting on it and seeing the price the salesman asked if I had even considered the zx14r and I said no. I’ve been a Suzuki rider since 1991. Just for the hell of it I tossed a leg over a zx14r and then checked the price. 3 days later I rode my zx14r home. Would have done it sooner but I never ride in the rain. Still love my 14 and it still scares the crud out of me.
I have a 2016 performance sport version so most of your points don’t apply. The only thing I would add is that cruise control would be nice. I’ve done the NC500 on it. Thoroughly recommended!
Great video! Thank you. I just changed all 6 lights on my 2007 ZX-14.
The only things I don’t like about my 2019 zx14r abs se is all of the people (cars and bikes) that want to try and race me and that the battery isn’t under the seat for easy replacement.
I have to say yes i agree with both of those! I forgot to mention the stupid placement of the battery.
I did this both on my first zzr1400 which was a 2006 original then on my current 2016 ps. It really updated the look of both bikes especially the high beam when you flash an oncoming bike, it's that instant, quick flash, super cool lol. I'm like yourself, don't go out in the dark however, after a trip to North Wales, arrived in Dublin off the ferry and had to travel home to Belfast in, probably the worst weather ever, ie, torrential rain and dark, and the leds did a great job. Keep up the great videos. Really appreciate them
It was an easy no brainer upgrade for sure! Thanks 👍
That top bolt on side fairing on my bike just spins, does not come out. The clip on the inside spins with the bolt.
Try and reach the clip somehow to hold it so it doesn’t spin…?
Hi good video I have the bike as I not done this before please could you send me details of what you purchased is it compatible with any phone . Many thanks .Steve.
Hi Steve, check out www.quadlockcase.com Select your model of phone and then just choose from the options 👍🏻. This install we used the fork stem mount with vibration dampener and usb charger.
@@cjrides.1 your video was very informative and shall use as a reference and for the information 👍
Just put er5 mirrors on my zr7 cos they're the same as I had crap ones on it and they're brilliant,I had an er5 a few years back and never had a mirror issue on that either!! Also ya can't blame the mirrors if your replacements are doing the same or similar!!
Picked one up for £900 as an emergency run around while my daily ride was in the shop for a few weeks, original plan was to use it until I got my main ride back then sell it on, but I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed it for such and old cheap bike that she's now a mod project and permenant addition to the stable.
Love this! Recently sold mine on but I must admit, I’m tempted to get another!
What year is your 14R ? I have a 2018
2012
Great video Just got my 1400 out of tge shed Stuck it in 1st gear and it won't shift back up into neutral, unless I put tge stand down , Got told it might have air in the system But this video is spot on as it does look like I might need to replace tge old cluch oil
How is parts availability on the stuff you listed? Easy to find replacement parts or will it turn into a scavenger hunt if you need any of these?
Readily available on eBay and Kawasaki original parts website 👍🏻
@@cjrides.1 Good to hear, thanks! Been checking out your other ER5 videos as well. Great content 🫡
I would agree 👍
gonna check one tomorrow. going to be my first motorcycle. Cheers from Belgium
Just updated my screen for the beginning of this season. Had the double bubble, but decided to try out the Zero Gravity Touring screen. My helmet is so much quieter now that alot of the wind is diverted over my head. Feels more spacious and the lines flow nicely with my ZX14. A two thumbs up on the touring screens.
ex 500 mudguard fits er5?
Should do, they are basically the same bike
Don't run direct to battery use a power from headlight that will only power when ignition is turned on, this will still drain power as always connected
Kawasaki ER5 after last lifting is really good bike. Old style speedomterer and tacho looks perfect.
Brilliant bikes, with the right care can go on and on!
I had 2 ZX 14 s , an 08 and then an 09 . Best bike I ever had , terrific fun super dramatic . Toured all over western US . Comfy stable temptress ..touring at warp speed is the best . Gave it up at age 72 , too much knee tuck . Got a Diavel, a much more demand ing bike altogether but upright riding posture is great . Current plan is a Concours . If you have the opportunity to ride one do so .
