I was going to Taiwan next after Hiroshima, but the flights out of Hiroshima were pricey and not a lot of selection for times. So, is this an actual race? Are they being timed? It seems some of them are built for speed, and some are built to be funny.
There are different categories of prizes and different categories of cars. There are art cars and speed cars. You can get prizes for speed, engineering / design, and fan favorite.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. That's my car. It was a blast. Little kids came up to it all day long and cautiously approached. One little 5 year old girl turned to her mom and said "mom, is that real poop?" It was hilarious. After the race I sold it to a guy who owns a waste management company. It's an adult soapbox derby so your assertion is inherently wrong. I'm an adult. by definition. :*

That was my car. I came up with the name "the shart cart" and then on registration day we all drew our car numbers out of a hat and I drew #2. It was amazing. I felt like I was commanded by a higher power at that point to make a giant turd. 15 cans of expanding foam on chicken-wire later and a gallon of "Brown Velvet" paint from Home Depot and we were ready. :D
