It’s always a balance, trying to find a length that will prevent people from getting bored, but not making it too short that you speed through the important information. And I know for me, sometimes visualizing things how they would work in the real world always helps me. Really appreciate your comment!

    A very welldone demonstration, thank you! I have a question not directly related to the topic: I often have a problem seeing the cursor (with most tools). When you use the cursor, there seems to be a nice circle around the actual cursor. I would dearly love to have that. I use Windows 10 on a PC, and I get the impression that you also use Windows. How is it done?

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 4 дня назад

      Hi there! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Well, the circle you might be seeing only shows up when I’m recording my screen to make videos. (I think it’s there to make the cursor easy to see when doing screen recording,) but it’s not actually there when I’m usually working. But if you want the curser to be bigger in Windows 10 (across your whole system including Affinity) you can go the settings app (in windows 10) then select Ease of Access, then Cursor and Pointer. There you should be able to adjust the size and color of your cursor to make it easier to see! I hope this helps!

      Well, I think if you just need basic functionality like drawing on screen, making diagrams, then the Wacom Intuos would more than suffice. Both tablets do the exact same thing, and I used the basic Wacom Intuos for years before upgrading to the pro. The main differences are the Pro has more buttons that you can customize, a heavier weighted pen, and I believe more pressure sensitivity levels (something that I never noticed, nor made any difference in my work.) So it you really just need something to make diagrams for a class, the Wacom Intuos will work just fine I believe. And I believe there is a Bluetooth version of it as well.

    When I was a kid in Jr High in the 70s. my best friend had a B&W dark room. During printing, to dodge he would put part of his hand or an object (shaped paper or something else) between the enlarger lens & the paper, creating a shadow. To burn, he would block light to surrounding areas by arranging hands w/ a hole between them or cutting a hole in paper sheet. It was locally controlled exposure, then into the chemicals. I'd help, which would come in handy doing digital images much later.

      @@brgphotography Well, I think maybe I was trying to use Mask in the wrong way. I have an image with a black background. I wanted to make it a white background so the image, a logo, stands out better. Maybe that's not the right situation for using Masking?

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 20 дней назад

      @bikedad57 Right. That situation does really require a mask. The most flexible option would be to first have one fill layer. (layer->new fill layer) This will creative a new layer that is just one solid color. Then you can change that color at anytime by making sure you have the move tool selected (the little arrow) then changing the color in the color pallet. This will change the color of the fill layer. Then you could have just your logo on a new layer above that fill layer. Then you could change the background layer color to any color to see how different colors look. Is your logo and black background on separate layers, or the same layer?

    • @bikedad57
      @bikedad57 20 дней назад

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 20 дней назад

      @bikedad57 let me know how it works. Once you get used to working with layers, it’s a really good habit to put different elements on different layers, so you can always go back and make changes to each individual element. It’s not impossible, but it takes a little more work to change the white background to black if it’s all on the same layer. Of course, it depends on the complexity of your logo.

    More than a year after paying for Affinity, I cannot do effective work. All "tutorials" start with screens that look different from mine, no explanation of how to open tools or effects in the simplest layouts. This is very helpful. Thank you.

    Add this one to your wish list please- I recently moved to Affinity after 18 years of PS experience. The biggest thing I miss is the ability to have a 2 up view while doing D&B. I typically keep one zoomed all the way out, and the working view zoomed in to 100% to make sure I don't overdo it. Yes, I can zoom in and out, but that's not efficient.

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 25 дней назад

      That’s an interesting idea that I’ve never thought about, but I could see being very helpful. One work around could be using the “navigator” window to always give you a full sized view. Under the window tab you can check on navigator. You can make the window pretty big and have that side by side as you are doing D&B. The only thing is you can’t zoom the navigator window. So you always get a full view.

      @@brgphotography Thank you for the suggestion! I'd be okay with that, but when I'm zoomed in at 100 - 300% to do some very fine detail work the area your zoomed into is covered by a translucent box in the navigator panel to show where you're zoomed into. The nice thing about this trick in PS is the second view is live, or updates as you work. It's so easy even for a seasoned retoucher to over do things when zoomed in that close. I've been playing with this and found a way to replicate most of what I need. Once you have a file open for editing, select "View>New View" on the menu bar. Next, go to "Window>Arrange>Float All". In PS, I would then go to Arrange and select side by side and the photo's would be docked to the correct size. The Retouching Toolkit and other panels had this as an action (macro) to set it up for me. Alas, AP2 doesn't have this (yet), so I'm forced to resize the floating windows around my workspace. The good news is it works and updates the copy live as you're editing! I'll update you if I find a way to automate this. Try it out and let me know what you think...

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 25 дней назад

      @williamcarter6374 that’s a really clever idea. I actually never used the new view option. And it’s always interesting to hear new ways to work. Because I sometimes also do lots of fine detail, and very fine dodging and burning. And I’ve always just kind of zoomed out and zoomed in. But having a copy of the image right next to where I’m working as a great idea. I’ll be able to see my retouches at full size without having to zoom in and out so much. Yeah, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an option to scale it like Photoshop. You can just have the window floating off to one side. One thing that I do, that you may have noticed, is I undock my toolbar. This allows me to float the tool bar on top of the view I’m not working in this saving a little space. I’m definitely gonna try this on my next retouch.

    Best tutorial I have found, not too fast, well explained. Hopefully I can watch all your videos and learn how to get the best out of Affinity. One Question how do I save all my work. Thanks again Mal.

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 26 дней назад

      You’re very welcome! I glad you found the pace just right! You mean saving all your work and layers? Just go up to File->Save. And when you get a little get box pop up, make sure you select “save as.” This will keep all your layers and masks. If you select “flatten,” it will compress all your layers down to one and you won’t be able to work on them when you re-open the file. So when you select “save as,” it should save it as an affinity photo document, and you should be able to open it at a later time and all your layers and masks will be there! Hope this helps answers your question!

    I don't understand, when I create a new layer, colour and add soft light the soft light effects the whole image and not just the lips. What do I do?

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography 27 дней назад

      Hmm. So you should be creating a new blank layer. Then painting over the lips (on that new layer) Then changing that layer’s blend mode to soft light. It should only affect the layer you painted on the lips. Mare you sure you were painting on a blank layer? Not a duplicate of the layer with the face on it? If it a blank layer, and the only information on that layer is the lips you painted, changing the blend mode to soft light should only affect the painted lips. Try again and let me know if it works.

    I think we have similar editing styles. I do quite a bit of clean to less then amount of heavy lifting in FS. If the person has pretty good skin I don't even have to do any FS. Good going sir love the content

      That’s interesting. Yeah, especially if the final image is only going to end up on social media, you can do a lot of the heavy lifting with just clean up. Especially on wider shots. I use FS every once in a while, but recently been preferring D&B even though it takes longer. Appreciate the comment! Hope to make more in this series.

I found even when trying to create my own action, when i make the blur radius visible during the run process, the FS preview doesn't show. When the blur slider is adjusted it does reflect on screen. Anyone else experiencing that and found away around it?

    question - is selective color the closest tool to DCTL? or is there ways to get even more specific with playing around with very specific colors in the images?

    • @brgphotography
      @brgphotography Месяц назад

      That a good question. I would say there isn’t anything similar to a DaVinci color space transform, or DCTL, since those seem to operate more in the background. But selective color, and HSL (and isolating a particular color) would probably be the best tools for drastic color transforms. But in think the biggest advantage of working with a still image over a video, is we can mask individual parts of the image to adjust and change the colors as extreme as we would like.
