Using the Dehancer plug-in to create authentic film looks in Affinity Photo
In this video I am looking at Dehancear, a film, emulation plug-in for Affinity Photo that can give your photos a really cool vintage film look.
Full-disclosure, Dehancer reached out to me and offered me a lifetime license to their plug-in in exchange for a video talking about their product. But this isn't a sponsored video, no money was involved, and they don't even see the video before I upload it. So I am giving you my full 100% honest opinion.
So this video is going to be kind of a review & tutorial of the Dehnacer plug-in.

You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Good tutorial but I think I need to figure out the use of brushes before I work on masks- Still not sure what brushes I should be using with a mask layer. I think I spotted Ben using the dodge and burn brushes but I have looked in the customise tools panel and can’t see them. Are they somewhere else?
Thank you! Hmm, I’m pretty sure I didn’t use the dodge and burn brushes, because I don’t ever use them anymore. When I do dodge and burn, I use a sieves layer, then use a paint brush to “reveal” the adjustment. Basically using just a normal brush set you white. I’ll usually have the flow set to 2% and the hardness down to 0% so the edges are really soft. Then with the low flow I can slowly build up the effect. But you should be able to find the dodge and burn tool in the customize tool section. It looks like a little magnifying glass and a flame icon.
Bravo! Great tutorial!
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it, and hope you found it helpful!
Hi! Which one would you recommend for beginners in design? With screen or without? I've found some: -Wacom Cintiq 16 -Wacom Intuos Pro Medium -XP- Pen Artist 22R Pro I study graphic design and I think this would be very useful for work. Thank u so much.
I think if you’re just beginning out, probably the ones without the screen just because it’s gonna be a lot cheaper. It might take a little bit of practice to get used to moving your hand on the tablet, while looking at the screen. But once you get used to it, it’s completely intuitive. I know some people like having the tablet with the screen, but usually when you’re working on the screen, you have to also have the screen mounted on your desk. Usually you can’t work on it flat on the table like you are drawing on paper. Just because it’s pretty thick, and of the cables. You might be able to, but all of my friends who work in the animation industry, or graphic industry, they all use their tablets mounted on the desk, kind of a 45° angle, similar to where a monitor would be, and they’re working like that. So it definitely takes up a lot more desk space. Where are the tablets without the screen don’t have a large footprint, and are usually gonna be a lot cheaper. You’re gonna have to use what you think works best for you, but I think if you’re starting out, I would get the non-screen one. But that’s just my two cents
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you!
Can you also change the size of the active area on the smaller intuos?
Yeah. You can change the size of the active area on both of them.
I presume you created this video - after you had presented and described the problems in the Affinity Forum, and nobody there were able to help. Otherwise the bugs have no chance of being corrected, as you must know.
Haha. Yeah. I’ve presented a few of these over the years. Maybe I need to remind them again…
Damn, this is amazing. Great tutorial! Thank you!
Thank you and you’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
For photoshop editing do you think a small pro pad will work well? Or do you need the medium one?
I think both work, so it’s more a preference. I would also consider how much desk space you have for it. Sometimes that’s the deciding factor. But I’ve been using the small size for 7 years and it’s perfect for me.
@ thank you x Budget wise the small Pro is affordable or I’d need to buy a cheaper medium graphics pad. Decisions 😫
Hello again, what kind of layer do you add to draw hair? Pixel layer doesn't work, I can draw as much as I want - empty layer and the end....
That’s interesting…🤔 I usually just create an empty pixel layer (add new pixel layer) and just paint my hair strands on that layer.
@brgphotography well, finally I just copied the basic layer and draw hair on it to finish picture. Because just an empty new pixel layer remain empty and I don't understand why. Maybe you have some optional tools?
Hmm. That’s strange. You should be able to just create a new layer, and paint directly on that later. Are you sure the layer is active, meaning it has the blue dot next to it? Or maybe you have a hidden selection? I can’t think of any reason why you wouldn’t be able to paint directly on a new pixel layer.
@@brgphotography Well, I tried again and still in deep whole. Yes, the new pixel layer is active, the layer below is rasterised. I have added new empty pixel layer, opacity 100%, blend mode Normal. The brush settings are Opacity 100 %, flow 100 % hardness 50%. None of any brushes works on this layer at all, if tool Paint Brush Tool is set. Not yours brushes, nor any other build in. But I discovered one tool works, only it is Colour replacement brush tool. Why? No idea! Only tutorials looks great. Why I can use Capture One easily, and this is such a horror. I have to admit I hate this program, to much effort to learn and with not satisfying result.
@@brgphotography Ok, this Protect alpha - what a **** it is? That's was a problem and I have no ide why it was switched on!
Hi, I was trying to copy you and 1 problem - why I don't have a retouch brushes? Where is it? Is it an add-on, extra I have to order?
Hi! These are a group of brushes that I made for my retouching work! But I made it available for download here! drive.google.com/file/d/10-FSdeM1jesQMUXhBCuOP5Rw5Kfh3lSH Enjoy!
@@brgphotography Thank you very much, that's really kind of you 😍💖💖💖
I did have some buggy issues that went away once I replaced my computer HDMI cable or other connecting cable. These cables degenerate after time and should be tossed in the trash can and replaced. Another thing to look at are computer resources, make sure they firing off and sharing the workload. One other issue I had was with my monitor. I had been in a big hurry to get a monitor that replicated color the best. After much research I decided on BenQ!!!! When I got a good discount I purchased a 32" and never was really pleased with it. I decided to call BenQ one day and "low and behold", I had purchased a Graphic Designer Monitor and not a Photographers Monitor!!! My mistake and there really is nothing wrong with my monitor. I do understand the issues I had and can work around them. Let us know what system you use? I am on Windows. Moonpie
That’s interesting. But I’ve also encountered these problems when I’m working on my MacBook. So that rules out the HDMI issue. Might be a Wacom issue though…🤔 I have a 27” BenQ photographers monitor which I love.
@@brgphotography I used to use a Wacom a long time ago and it would always lag. I still have it but it is a legacy item by now so no use trying the same unit again. Going to put it on Market place. I would get another one but the selection process has gotten so much easier over the years I probably can get away with just a mouse pad with a wrist rest. Enjoy your channel!
In the end, it’s best to use what works best for you! Thank you!
Thank you for such a clear explanation of what Layers and Masks are and how they are used. Exceptional presentation - Thank you.
Thank you very much! I tried to make it really easy to understand, so I’m happy to hear you say that!
It's what I wanna learn, but you show it soooo fast that I need a written manual 😀 please. I cannot notice when you change one tool to other and what is the order which I have to repeat.
Thank you for the comment! Sometimes I get a little ahead of myself and start speaking too fast. But I’m more aware of it now, and try to speak slower to make things more understandable. Thank you!
@@brgphotography super that you react! I was learning editing in C1 and can share advice about showing how to work. If you can, divide whole video into parts, following parts plaese, but with info what tool you explain in every part. Thank you for the kind words! I’ve definitely found that people seem to enjoy when I take things a little slower and explain things in detail. I think (for me) there is this pressure to try to get in as much information as quick as possible. Maybe trying to keep up with other youtubers. But I’m realizing I need to do things at a pace that is most helpful for the viewers. So I appreciate your comment! I also plan to make a video showing my workflow from Capture One to Affinity Photo, so be on the lookout for that.

Yeah, like the one in my in my normal intro videos. It was a cool look.
Nice video but please leave out the background music, it sounds like it is played backwards.
Thanks for the input! Yeah, I think some of the tracks especially in the beginning have this warp/reverse effect in the song. Makes it sounds backwards. I’ll be a little more careful when choosing background tracks. Appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for the opportunity! I’m really enjoying the plug in!
I am just starting out and this video was brilliant, it helped me understand the concept of layers and masks. And the way you explain things is so patient, so zen :-) Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much! I’m really happy to hear that!. I’m always kind of worried that my videos are a bit too long, because I take a lot of time to explain things and sometimes go into too much detail. Especially these days, everybody just wants the answers really quickly. So I’m glad that you felt it was very Zen like. I’m trying to embrace taking things slow, and being relaxed with it. Because sometimes it just takes time to learn something new. You can’t learn it in a one minute short. Especially was things that can be kind of complicated to wrap your head around. And like I said in the video, it took me a while to finally understand how masks worked. I appreciate your comment!
@@brgphotography T Would you have any videos on just the raw editing part / development? Thank you once again, much appreciated.
@tiborbogar7739 not yet, but it’s a topic I plan on making a video about in the near future.
@@brgphotography Thank you!
I wish I had listen to this at least a week ago, because the impact of having an active (not deactivated) selection made me mad before I realized why nothing is working as expected....
Two more discoveries: the precision of brush selection depends on the brush speed, and, selection can be saved for later use! Uau!
@@antonzvanut9542 Hey there! Yeah, I've definitely had that same frustration! Sometimes it's hard to see the marching ants so you don't realize you had something selected, and you're wondering why nothing is working. Or worse when you have your selection hidden, so you can't even see the marching ants. Yeah, saving selections for later use is really useful, and something I didn't start doing till awhile ago. Now I use it all the time. Really glad you were able to pick up some new tips for Affinity Photo. It can do so many things, it's a never ending learning process. But that makes it fun!
I wouldn't use dehancer with Affinity Photo. I looked at it a few months ago and it required enabling Roseta on Affinity Photo on Mac to run. I just downloaded the latest version from their website. I the Affinity Photo instructions is this: CURRENTLY AFFINITY PHOTO SUPPORT HAS BETA STATUS AND MAY BE UNSTABLE. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Actually I was worried about that, but unless it’s doing it in the background, I didn’t have to enable Roseta. And even though it’s still beta, I personally haven’t had any issues with it except for a few small bugs which I mention in the video.

Can I edit a picture from my phone gallery with this? Say I wanted to do a sketch to modify the landscaping of my house Thank you !
Hi there. I’m not sure this will work with any phone. As on the computer it needs to download specific drivers for it to work. I looked at it online, and it seems like this won’t work with a mobile device. At least iOS. Not sure about android. It seems some people may have gotten it to work via some work around, but in general it looks like Wacom doesn’t support mobile devices currently. :(
@brgphotography Thanks, so what about editing any pictures from the gallery from my computer PC or laptop? Would I be able to edit any chosen pictures from them ? Please excuse me. I'm very new to this all
Not a problem. As long as you are able to transfer the photo from your phone to your computer, either via a USB cable, or AirDrop, (depending on what kind of phone and computer you have,) you can use any photo editing software to edit the photo. And honestly, it doesn’t even have to be photo editing software if all you need to do is draw on the photo. You could probably do it in MS paint if you are on Windows, or notepad or Freefeom if you are on Apple iOS /Mac. Basically these tablets operate just like a mouse. So once you have the photo on your computer, you could use your mouse, or a tablet like this to mark up, or draw over the photo as you like.
@brgphotography I think I'll be in love with this soon , thank you much
Definitely! Once you get used to using a tablet to edit Photos in your computer, it’s difficult to go back to using a mouse. It might take a while to get used to, depending on how good your hand eye coordination is, but once you get a feel for it, it makes doing things like drawing, painting, drawing diagrams, etc. so much easier
Excellent tutorial! Subscribed! I'm new to AP which I acquired for one particullar reason: the need to automate a dust spot removal on a bunch of 1000+ images taken for a Time Lapse compilation. Now I gradualy discover more and more about AP, but still have not resolved the "root" dust spot problem: I created a macro by editing one image (by Inpainting brush) and then run the batch. Both functions work great but the result is not what I expected. Instead of the ugly dark spot on the sky (on the moving clouds) I now have a flickering bubble on the resulting video. Obviously, the dust spot removal is not ideal on (all?) images like it is on the one that served for macro creation. Could you please advice me how to improve the editing process/preocedure?
Thanks for the support! Hmm. That is an interesting problem. I’d have to think about that one. I’ve never tried to use macros for batch processing clone stamping. I did come across this forum post, but I tested it out and couldn’t get it to work. Maybe you might have better luck. It seems it should be possible though. forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/125806-inpainting-brush-not-working-in-macros/ Sorry, I can’t help too much. This is an interesting problem though, so I might play around a little and if I get something working I’ll let you know!
I have problems with layers and I am not sure if it is a bug, or I'm just doing something wrong here. I'm quite new to Affinity, because I dumped Photoshop. When I have my background layer and want to copy parts of it and merge it as a new layer, how can I edit the HLS of my top layer without changing the background layer. Color corrections and HSL Corrections just affect all layers.
Hi there! So, in order for an adjustment layer to only affect one layer you need to take that adjustment layer and drag it onto the layer you want it to affect. So in the layer stack click and drag you HSL adjustment (or any other adjustment layer) and drag in onto the layer you want to affect (your copied parts layer.) Make sure to drag it onto the title/name of the layer, and the whole layer should turn blue. With adjustment layers you can also drag into onto the thumbnail and it will achieve the same affect. But with other types of layer there is a difference between dragging on the thumbnail or title. Now, once you’ve dragged the layer onto the other layer, your HSL should now only affect that layer.
Well explained Thanks
You’re welcome! I’m glad to hear it was easy to understand.
Thank you for these great videos. You are a real educator and very clear! Your examples helped me a lot!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m really glad you found it helpful!
This is fantastic
Thank you very much! I think it’s an underutilized feature in affinity photo.
I'm a newcomer to digital photography but had a lot of experience with "wet" photography. I tried Lightroom/Photoshop but just switched to Affinity after seeing many videos explaining why folks are leaving Adobe. This particular video finally "turned on the light" as to how layers and masks work and the interplay/integration between them. Congratulations on a great job!
Thank you so much! I’m really glad to hear that. It’s interesting that once you understand it, it’s pretty easy, but it sometimes takes awhile for it to “click” or for the “light to turn on” like you said. I know it did for me, which is why I wanted to make this video.
Truly nice job. Thx for sharing!
You’re very welcome! It’s not a topic often discussed, but I’ve had to do fixes like this quite a lot, so I thought it might make an interesting video.
Re the Selection tool(s), you’ve virtually turned a “butter knife” into a “Swiss Army knife”. I’ve been using Photo for a couple years and was never aware of its vast versatility. Thanks.
Thank you very much! Yeah, there are so many options, even with some of the “simpler” tools, I’m sure I’m not even using them to their full potential.
Hey, I just stumbled on your channel since I've started using Affinity Photo 2. You say your content is usually made for advanced users, but I will echo what everyone says about this video : your beginners content is really great and I think you can have a huge audience with that kind of content. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much for the kind words! Yeah, when I started the channel, there weren’t a lot of tutorials aimed toward advanced users, or advanced techniques. So I started the channel with that in mind. But over the course of making videos, I realized there were still a lot of people who didn’t have a strong foundation of some of the basics which are required to do some of the more advanced techniques. So I started a few videos going over some of the basics, like this one, and it seems to have really gained an audience. So I definitely want to keep making videos with some more advanced techniques, but also make videos geared toward new users, so they can start to have a better understanding of more advanced things you can do in affinity photo. And comments like this keep me motivated, so thank you very much!
I hated dealing with masks because I wasn't 100% clear. Now(thanks to you) I am. I'm now a new subscriber. Thanks!

Problem when I select a tool such as selection I see an X rather than dotted circle. How to fix?
Hmm. Do you mean a cross shape? I believe if you go to settings-> User interface, there is a setting called “always show brush crosshair” and you can check it on or off. If it’s on it will always show a little + sign with your brush tools. I turn my off. Does this help?
'Excellent tutorials on layers and masks. Looking forward looking at your other tutorials. I can understand your explanations very easily.
Thank you very much! I really glad to hear that. I’ve got a few more videos I. My beginner series, and a lot of stuff of retouching techniques, so enjoy! And thanks for your support!
Perfect. Thank you bro
You’re welcome brother! Happy you enjoyed it!
Excelente, aun con subs en español y 0.75 en velocidad comprendí, aficionado desde Costa Rica 🎉❤
¡Muchos gracias! I’m happy to hear you could understand!
Thank you! Willing to learn but just starting out. I want to throw in the towel every time someone tries to explain beyond my capacity. Simple concepts need simple explanations, which you've provided. MUCH appreciated.
Thank you very much! This video actually came about when I was teaching my mom how to use affinity, and realized it’s important to sometimes take the approach that not everyone has previous experience with photo editing. I’m really glad to hear you found it helpful.
A little bit more expensive ? Hello, Intuos Pro is 3-4 times more expensive than the Intuos. That "little bit" alone is a big NO for me.
Yeah, it’s definitely more than a little bit more expensive. That’s actually one of the main reasons why I used the original for so long. And not everyone needs the small upgrades the pro offers over the original. So I think the Intuos will be more than enough for most users.
another very good clear demonstration. Thanks
Thank you! You’re very welcome!
