Hey! I'm here to share the journey of working toward my author dreams :) My current work in progress is a YA Fantasy Romance Novel- and I'm editing my third draft. I'm excited to dive into all things writing, story telling, publishing, and reading, while connecting within this inspiring community!
How to actually follow through with writing a book: Consistency is key
Writing a book is hard. There are unpredictable ebbs and flows, imposter syndrome and information overwhelm on how to do it.
Through my journey of working on my debut novel for a year and a half, I have learned that consistency is the key to everything. But staying consistent is hard and often a tough mental game.
Here I share tips, mindsets, and strategies that have helped me get to editing my third draft. I hope these help, and happy writing!

BRAINSTORM a new book idea with me: documenting the messy creative process
Просмотров 2422 месяца назад
As a natural pantser, I find the brainstorming stage of writing a book to be overwhelming. I like to use immersive ways to flesh out my ideas through listening to songs, scrolling Pinterest, researching lore, and practicing writing scenes. For me plotting too early can disrupt the creative process, so I wanted to share a more unconventional way of brainstorming that may help other writers like me!

Writing a book is daunting, but it's more possible than you might think! Since taking the plunge a year ago and drafting my novel, I have felt a joy I haven't experienced since I was a kid. Now that I am editing my second draft, I have gained advice, tips, and mindsets that help me keep going. I hope to inspire you to start writing the book of your dreams and share this creative journey!
I struggle with putting words on the paper. But hearing about your drive and the little habits you worked on overtime. Thank you for this.
You should call yourself an "aspiring published author" rather than an "aspiring author". You are the author or the book you are writing. You are already an author, published or not. It's a small distinction, but given you talk about the feelings of inadequacy associated with writing, I thought I should mention that. Framing it as such does a lot for your mental wellbeing. This is a really interesting video btw great stuff
I think very similar to you, other people inspire me to write. I don't feel envy or that I am in a competition. I am gonna follow your journey you seem like a really lovely person.
Just finished my first draft today. Finding this video was a godsend.
I am also writing my first fantasy romance novel! I'm about half way through draft one and it is so rewarding.
i started with an epic but it became too much for my first time so I'm writing a romantasy that takes place roughly two hundred years after my epic.
a bit of advice i can give from one newbie to another is id recommend watching brandon Sandersons lectures here on yt, they've been a huge help
It's wonderful to see that we are not alone in the writing process. I decided to record my own writing journey and hope to achieve the dream of making a living out of it. However, if anyone reads our works at any point in life, that will be the most satisfying thing. We just have to be courageous enough to get our stories out there!!! =)
My trifecta draft tech is… Draft 1 THE BONES. Draft 2 THE MAGIC SYSTEM. Draft 3 THE PARABLES AND SUBVERSIONS. Draft 4 THE POLISH. Draft 5 THE SHINE. It sounds like a lot………………. Each their own I suppose.
****old grumbly man walks into the room. Leeeeeeet me teeeellllll you young lady the craziness of writing a novel. My gosh. Sorry. Inspiring author too. I first developed The Ancient World universe when I was 9, and spent years developing it. But it grew. And grew. And grew. And now I’m 31 and am ready to write the first draft but I have a 4-draft structure for the best novel. The Ancient World is like a 24-book multi series. The main series follows a triplet sons of the king. The triplet sons were seperated at birth and sent to different planets for protection. So the main 4-book series is the triplets finding their home world, finding each other, finding the other surviving children. The kids all need to figure out how to survive with no parents, no structure, no hope, no leadership, in a broken and fallen world while they are regularly hunted by demons. They all grow up together, learning how to make the world their own, find purpose in themselves and build a new world while defeating the original evilness that destroyed the world in the sequel series. The main series is actually titled Ille Anticuus Mundus. The sequel series Chronicum is 3 separate books describing different lives and experiences of other members of the family as the end of the world began and happened. Chronicum I depicts the experiences of the sons of the king as the Last War breaks out, the older brothers of the triplets from the main series; Chronicum II depicts the exp and lives of the daughters of the King during the Last War; and Chronicum III is the exp and life of the queen during the final days of the world where utter and complete ruin happens on a global scale destroying nearly all life that has not escaped miles under the surface or transported to another planet. Bar’Bariy is a series from a different cultures viewpoint-the Barbarian race. Its a 3-part series on the exp and lives of the barbarians as they also exp the end their entire culture, people, and history for reasons not of their own. Its such a culture shock. Then of course theres Short Stories of The Ancient World, a singular book of.. as you’d guess, many many short stories spanning millions of years across the ancient world universe. And there is The Adventures of the Ancient World which is like a 4th-wall 3-book series of one of the triplets returning to the world as an old man after leaving it at the end of the main series to go back to the place he grew up………. earth. Anyway, thats an exciting kind of kids story series like The Hobbit. Then theres Sophia’s Texts which is a sequel that happens thousands of years after the main series. And there is the Three Suns which is a series that describes the original triplets that the king wanted to recreate in prophecy that ended up destroying the world. The original triplets are like Creation figures, millions of years before the main series. Then there is Reginea Ballum which is a prequel to Bar’Bariy, and Aberax which is a sequel to the Queens War. Its a massive universe. It sounds like a lot but 21 years right. Tolkien spent 34 years creating LotR. Some people take time. Most of us fail. Most of us arent the ones. But some of us are. The thing we often forget is all great names are replaced. We are young, perceptively, and all the great writers of today will die or retire in the next 10-40 years. New people will come. Just the way…. The human zeitgeist goes. Its the circle of life. And most greatness is accidental. No one really knows what movie or book or game will be the smash hit. Art is always an accident. As artists, all we have to do is create. Its not our job to be successful, its our job to create. Even Leonardo had critiques and naysayers. Also, there is no actual planets. Its a flat universe, earth is a tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny section on the massive universe plain and is protected by a unimaginably massive barrier plus the Gourian society has protected the sanctity of the 3rd realm since time immemorial, which a bit of support from the Min Qu Dynasty. Anyway, humans are actually 12-20ft tall, have every type of magic and fights monsters and demons that modern religion cant imagine. Amon Heim is a Jesus Christ figure, Sanuxe is the Satan figure, Abra is the God figure. The history is endless. It is representative of actual human ancient theories, religious mythologies, and actual proven history in our human existence. So the name The Ancient World DOES STAND! Haahahah. Ahhhh….. need more whiskey. Anyway, enjoyed your video. ****old man walks away in the darkness of the night.
I just found your channel and i love your videos!! Also I love how your channel name sounds like "writerly" ✍✨
This was the best way to start my pre-writing session. I've been working on a story idea and feeling a bit overwhelmed/imposter syndrome this week about it, and your pep talk was just what I needed to remind myself that I CAN DO IT! Above all, love your "start messy" quote. Such good advice for writing but also life. I am a chronic over-planner of everything and am really trying to not fixate on the details before I jump into this story. So thank you for the reminder to JUST START! 💞
Stage 0: I like reading--the universe feels pretty meaningless sometimes--maybe I should write a book. Stage 1: Sit in the lobby writing a book. Tell the same lady who asks every day that, no, it isn't a dissertation. Stage 2: All my friends and family and relationships are out on me because I'm spending all my time writing a book. Stage 3: That's a manuscript I guess. Time to see what other writer-people think? Stage 4: Oh. No one actually gives any feedback or answers my questions or responds. Should I change things at random? Stage 5: Look back with regret and wonder why I didn't pick a healthier hobby, like intravenous drugs. ... Stage 6: Try again?
I feel you on the feedback, I’ve found this part difficult as people are busy and it’s expensive for professional editing. I’m still figuring this out, but I do know there are online platforms that set you up with beta readers!
And yes always try again!
Thanks for sharing 😍
9:44 honestly this is a great way to see it! this made me think about it differently because i used to think that rewriting would make me steer off from the original story, but yeah it’s more of finding and learning more about the story
I’m a chronic rewriter and as much as it’s time consuming, I feel it helps me discover the story, I’m glad it helped!
I’m so glad I found your channel! I’ve watched all your videos up to this point (watching the newest one next) and I feel like I’ve found a younger version of my writer self. I’m 37 now and have loved writing since childhood. Then until my early-mid 20’s I got away from it but the writing ideas never really stopped. Now, I’ve been off and on writing since about 2013 and, while I’m still not finished with a single novel, I haven’t stopped writing. I have a trove of new ideas and one that I’ve been working on for 10 years. I decided last night, before I found your videos, I am writing that book for real this time. I tend to spend a lot of time reading books on the craft and watching videos just absorbing the information, then trying to apply it to my writing. But you’ve motivated me to just friggin’ write the thing, messy as it may be. If you read all this, thank you! Haha. And thank you for sharing your journey as well. I can’t wait to see where it takes you!
You’re motivating me to keep going! It’s funny how we can find ourselves busy with life but always come back to writing. It makes me so happy my videos connect with you, keep writing friend and I’ll be excited to see what books you put out there!
It is FREAKING HARD. My outline feels like a cryptic labyrinth and imposter syndrome is the worst. I have been working on my outline for AGES and I still don't have a single character NAMED. This better get easier!!!
The imposter syndrome is so so real, I like to see it as learning one new thing at a time but names are always my weakness haha
Just found your channel and I love it. You have really good camera presence, keep it up ❤
Thank you so much! It’s a little awkward talking at first but I think I’m getting the hang of it:)
@@writerlilylu you totally are, you're doing great!!
You are so pretty.
You’re so sweet❤
Pretty much agree with everything you say. I've pretty much finished my first book. The mistakes I made: left long periods between writing (partly because I wasn't sure where to take the plot) ...ended up with plot holes and continuity errors, made it too complex ...ended up taking out one plot line which wasn't working anyway ...then felt it wasn't complex enough!, so added a twist to the main plot. Started with a scene-setting explanation at the start then rewrote that as action ...still like some of the original but think I did the right thing.
I think I may have a similar journey, I think I have too many plot lines and it may be over complicated. Twists are challenging for me to write but I love reading them, congrats on your book progress!
Thanks Lily. Pretty confident this will be the final draft and published on Kindle by Christmas.
This is so helpful, thank you for posting this!! 🙏🏽🤍
The stages for me: Write a romantacy novel. Edit. Edit. Rewrite. Edit. Hire a diverse crew of alpha & beta readers that approve(after months of work), then have my submissions rejected continuously. Realizing I wasted so much time just because I'm male. Trad pub is so friggin toxic.
I understand your frustration, I think the restrictions on genres is whats making me lean toward self publishing. I know rejection is super common but I bet your story is amazing
I’m so glad RUclips brought me to you! I’m a first time stay at home mom and I’ve for some reason decided this is the time to follow my childhood dream of writing a book. I’m in the beginning stages so I appreciate you sharing this and I’m so excited for you! I am subscribing and will be following your journey! You’re killing it!🤩
It makes me so happy to hear your journey because I’ve always wanted to be a stay at home mom when I’m older but I also want to pursue my passion, and writing is super flexible! You’re incredible for getting back into writing during such a busy time, it’s inspiring and I’m rooting for you❤
I see you all over my TikTok fyp all the time. So glad I finally found you on YT!
Happy to have you here :)
hey lily! I’m also in the (somewhat) process of writing a book too, I just haven’t had much time because of nursing prerequisite, but I wanna focus more on it during the winter break! I love seeing your journey and you give me motivation aswell. great video
Hey! Life can get busy so any progress is amazing, excited for you and thank you :))
would you like another Alpha reader
I’ll be looking for beta readers soon actually, I’ll put an application out when I’m ready!
Loved hearing about your process!
Im two chapters away from finishing my first draft of my first book. The emotions are weird right now, and watching videos like this helps my mind focus on future projects
Finishing the first draft is such a milestone you’re so close! I always watch writing videos to help me stay motivated and focused :)
It is very relieving to see someone else go through a similar process than me when writing a first book and realising you're not doing so bad. Thank you for this 🤗 I would add, if you're fluent in other languages, you could consider translate your own book and publish that as well. That's what I plan to do with my own books, since nothing would make me happier than seeing people from other countries and languages reading my books
I wish I was fluent in other languages because I totally would! If it is possible, I would love to translate my books down the line :)
I started writing a novel four years ago, and it feels like my mindset shifted completely. There’s a clear before and after in my life once I committed to creating a world through words. Before that, my thoughts and emotions would come and go, fleeting like sparks, disappearing without a trace. Now it’s different; I’m much more deliberate about where I focus my energy, because I’ve learned that every idea requires time and effort. This goes beyond just writing-it’s helped me manage my thoughts in general. Something pretty wild happened to me two years ago, and people encouraged me to write about it. I had never considered writing a second book, but I did it. If I hadn’t written that first novel, I wouldn’t have found the courage to write the second. Writing has become a path of constant growth, and with this latest novel, I feel like I’ve done my best work yet. Keep creating-great things come from it!
Writing has a beautiful way of adding meaning and color to life because it really is a reflection of the world, I’ve too noticed my creativity has flourished, I’m excited for you and your writing journey!
Eye opening. Thanks for sharing.
Loved the insights! I am starting to find that discovery writing fits my style as well. Really appreciate your candor and am excited to hear more about your progress.
I used to try to plot but found my best ideas always came when I was writing, now I’m trying to work with my natural instincts instead of fighting them, and thank you!
what did you study in college
Psychology and Anthropology :)
So cool to see some insight about this process! I I’m a digital artist and I’ve illustrated some covers for a few indie fantasy romance authors, so this is so exciting to see. It really seems like you have your process down and I’m wishing you the absolute best of luck with self-publishing! ☺️🌷
I’ve always admired digital artists those covers are always beautiful! Thank you for the support❤
I’m currently working my first book which is a fictional novel and it’s definitely a best seller🔥 Hopefully I see you at the top Lilly I’m rooting for you!! Whenever you get finished with it post it on here so we’ll know i can’t wait to shop and give it a read
I hope you will reach her too once she hits best seller! Goodluck!
Im excited to hear you’re writing as well! I Can’t wait to hear about your book when it’s ready (and a best seller!) and thank you I will :))
I've just started exploring my own ideas! This was an amazing find. Thank you!
I’m so happy it helped you! The beginning stages are so fun, good luck on your journey!
Great video. Would you be interested in adding English/Spanish subtitles to your videos? ✍🏻 💻
Yes of course! I’m still trying to figure out how to do it, but I’ll look into it because I use them a lot too
@@writerlilylu that's great, well we can do some business, I think I already have the manuscript of one of your videos, and if you wish, I could translate the manuscript and have the spanish subtitles, that way people in Latin America may have your content available:D
@@writerlilylu for only $3.5
I really dig this video. I myself haven’t been a writer before though I used to love making stories when I was 8-9 years old. I recently started to start writing again and it feels so good since I haven’t been this creative in years. My teacher just read a short alternate ending to a story I had to read and he said he loved it! Keep up with the vids. You’re doing great!
I’m so happy you got back to writing, finding that creativity I had when I was a kid has given me so much passion. It’s incredible that you’re already getting feedback that’s still scary to me haha, thanks for the support and you’re doing great as well!
omg girl this is my first time watching you, and let me just say I love your vibe already. New sub!
Awe this made my day:) Happy to have you here!
The back and forth between I have no idea to I have so many is so real lolol
It's a constant struggle, I'm glad I'm not the only one haha
@@writerlilylu oh man it’s more common than we think 😂
I don't follow any real structure except thinking about the inciting incident and like having the midpoint and climax. They never really helped much and I felt they were too overwhelming. Following more of a plot timeline seems to work at least for this novel. I'm now trying out a chapter by chapter outline after exploring and running the story over in my head. I don't have too much detail because for now my brain doesn't have them and I don't have scenes in order in the chapter but I know enough, a vague idea, to figure out what might come after and allow me to discovery write in the chapter when drafting. For right now I feel I just wanna write it how it's coming to me and trust it.
I relate to your process so much, basic structure and plot points help but I find the best stories are when there is that freedom in between to explore and discover, following your intuition is always a great way to go!
Lolol yes that feeling of going back to square one. I've started drafting and stopped several times realizing what I had in mind kinda changed and now I have to think about how the new version works which can get frustrating at times but makes the story better.
I feel this, I had to go to square one many many times but I have never regretted it, yes you're starting over but you have so much more knowledge this time around
Love this video! Yes to discovering things along the way. I start a lot of my ideas with piecing ideas in my head/on paper, and then pantsing for a bit then realizing it's not quite right which leads me back to figuring out more about the plot and the world until I have enough info to go drafting again. Currently working on the first draft of my first novel that I hope to finish at the end of the year. I always wanted to write stories. Tried a bit in 8th grade and then never bothered again. I found an outlet in poetry but writing a novel one day was always in the back of mind. Now, here I am finally starting on that journey. Glad authortube is around to keep me and other aspiring writers going!
You got this!! I was a writer when I was younger too and only now found my way back, I feel it is never too late to start writing again, I'm rooting for you!
@@writerlilylu Thank you! And same to you 💃🏽💃🏽
What a refreshing point of view to hear amid all the other videos I see that like to say "*so and so* is the only way." I have always thought of myself as a hardcore planner but over the last year or so I have completely switched to discovery writing while working on a new project and I've been having such a blast with it! This is how I used to write my stories as a kid. It feels so nostalgic and freeing to do it again! One point I'm starting to realize about writing though, at least for myself, is that not all projects are meant to be worked on the same way. Some stories thrive better with heavier planning while others do better without any plan at all and just seeing where it takes you. Art was never meant to be confined to a strict set of methods and rules. The process is also very different from person to person. This video felt like a nice confirmation for me :) You've earned a new subscriber 🍄
I’m so happy these ideas resonated with you! I feel like going back to how we were creatives as a kid is such a big breakthrough, the more I write the more I realize it is so so so personal to each writer and finding what works for you is part of the fun of it!
We are all a bit delusional . I also wrote when I was a kid and strayed away from it
I feel this happens to so many of us with how busy life gets, but I feel like it’s never too late to find writing again
@@writerlilylu always so true !
I agree you have to let it flow out
